30 April 2008 by Tony Poole, South Wales Evening Post West End maintained a late promotion push in the MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two with a narrow 1-0 win at Caerau Ely. The goal that settled the issue arrived after a quarter of an hour when a shot from Neil Phillips was only partially cleared. The ball ran to Danny Kavanagh, who went on to collect a fifth goal of the season.
A series
of fine saves from Jonathan Harding, who was deputising for unavailable
Ben Hopkins, then kept the West Enders in front.
Their three remaining fixtures are also at home, involving Ely Rangers
(Saturday), Llanwern (May 6) and Tredegar Town (May 10). 29 April 2008 from South Wales Echo DINAS Powys aim to return to the top of MacWhirter Welsh League Division One when they host Bridgend Town tomorrow. But if they slip up, Ton Pentre can leap over them and current leaders Goytre in the three-way title battle if they win at Maesteg Park. Goytre return to action at home to Bridgend Town on Friday. Cambrian and Clydach had two players sent off during a 6-0 Dinas Powys win in the Rhondda – Shelton Payne scoring twice. The only team in with a real chance of earning promotion to the Principality Welsh Premier League is ENTO Aberaman Athletic, who are in fourth place with two games left. Aberaman, who applied for promotion along with Afan Lido, travel to Taffs Well and then take on Lido in their last match. They will have to finish in the top two if they are to make the step up – and if they are successful Caersws would face relegation from the top flight. While the top four battle for the title, Cwmbran Town are planning for 2008-09. They won 4-2 at home to Taffs Well to ensure they stay in Division One at the end of what has been a difficult season. This was a second successive win for Cwmbran. Leon Clarke scored twice with Tybbo Koffi and Tidiany Kone the other scorers. Jamal Roberts and Lloyd Toghill replied. The Crows are in action tomorrow when Caerleon visit Cwmbran Stadium.
28 April 2008 by Terry Daley, South Wales Argus THE balance of power swung Caerleon's way as they leapfrogged Newport YMCA in the race to become the county's best MacWhirter Welsh League club. YMCA started the day three points better off and with a superior goal difference. However, at the end of it Caerleon had overtaken their Division One rivals as well as taking the lead in the goal-difference stakes. While Caerleon recorded an expectant 4-1 away success at already-relegated Garw, YMCA slumped to a surprise 5-0 home defeat at the hands of title-chasing Goytre United. Mendalgief Road is rapidly becoming a favourite of the Port Talbot-based side, who clinched the 2006-07 championship at the venue, and the latest success took them to the top of the table. YMCA began minus skipper John Frankie' Pardue and also had to contend with losing Steve Edwards and Aaron Stewart before the kick-off. And Coldrick's side were further hampered when another midfielder, Robert Wigmore, aggravated a leg injury after just 20 minutes. "To be honest, we never really turned up," said YMCA boss Mark Coldrick. "We started brightly, but were thrown off course by Robert Wigmore's departure. "It was all a bit backwards for us after that, although we acquitted ourselves well and 5-0 flatters them. "We made defensive mistakes which cost us and we look forward now to putting things right during Tuesday's game at Croesyceiliog." The goal conceded means YMCA have now let in 59, the highest number of any of the top 12 with only four other clubs letting in more. While Caerleon were racing certainties to win at Garw, who have now conceded an amazing 213 in only 33 outings and where Chris Jones, Simon Truman, Matthew Hearne (penalty) and Ryan Cueto scored, manager Brendan Dowd said he was incensed by what he claims was extreme roughhouse tactics from the hosts. "They kicked anything that moved and it got so bad that I threatened to take my team off if I saw one more bad foul," revealed Dowd. "The referee was booking players throughout the game, but he let an awful lot go - and most of the problems stemmed from that. "We had skipper Martyn Phillips sent off for picking up two yellows, but there should have been some of their players who followed him. "To cap it all, we were poor and although the scoreline looks OK we can take no great credit from this game." Caerleon, who are now seventh but have played a game more than YMCA, have a quick chance to redeem themselves on Wednesday when they travel the short distance to face county rivals Cwmbran Town. The 12th-placed Crows were not in action and that gave the team immediately above them, Caldicot Town, the chance to open a five-point gap with victory at ENTO Aberaman Athletic. However, despite manager Jason Pritchard's assessment that they dominated their hosts, a 1-0 away defeat means his side still head Cwmbran by just two points with four games remaining. "We fairly battered them, but simply couldn't finish," complained Pritchard. "We created about four or five good chances and also had the frustration of seeing Wayne Morley sent off for a couple of bookable offences." Caldicot are also in mid-week action, visiting the Grenig Park home of Cwmamman United FC to face struggling Pontardawe Town. Fourth-from-the-bottom Croesyceiliog began the day seeking a positive result against table-topping Ton Pentre in an attempt to further climb away from the three-strong relegation zone. They managed just that in picking up a well-deserved point from a highly creditable 0-0 draw, and there was further good news when it was discovered the only side which can overtake them, Maesteg Park, lost 1-0 at home to Bridgend Town. It means even if Maesteg win their three games in hand, it would still leave them trailing by two points with both clubs then having only a couple of matches left. "We did really well and were worthy of the point," said joint Croesyceiliog manager Neil Gilmore, who saw defender Michael Dewar undeservedly red-carded following an off-the-ball incident with visiting striker Dane Williams. "We stuck to our task and battled throughout and could even have scored on a couple of occasions." Teenage striker Zac Osbourne shot high and wide before the break, substitute marksman Mark Jones could also have done better with a late chance - although Croesyceiliog were grateful to goalkeeper John Bailey for a fine save to deny visiting defender Richard Stevens. In Division Two, under-strength Llanwern slipped a place to seventh after losing 1-0 at Pontyclun, where Richard Shire struck a post, while Cwmbran Celtic were in action twice over the weekend. On Saturday, a penalty from Shaun Matthews earned them a 1-0 win at Llangeinor to move up a position to 11th while yesterday they travelled to Garden Village, but were beaten 2-0. At the bottom, Tredegar Town went down 3-1 at Ely Rangers and are now in grave danger of being relegated. "We've only three games left and we need certainly to win two of those to give ourselves any chance," said player-manager Andrew York, who witnessed Craig Burgess scoring his side's consolation. In-form Aberbargoed Buds travelled to Cwmaman Institute without the services of no fewer than five regulars - Ross Mazurczak, Dean Randall, Chris Duggan, Ian Williams and Iwan Ahearne - but they still stretched their unbeaten run to a seventh game with a 1-1 draw, thanks to a Nathan Edwards goal. "We should have because we had much the better of the game," said Buds boss Billy Vaughan, whose side is now 10 points adrift of a promotion spot with a match in hand. Risca United slipped another place to 11th after they lost 2-1 at Newcastle Emlyn, where Brendan Scott was their scorer, and Monmouth won 2-1 at Llantwit Fardre with goals coming from Andrew Rogers and Matthew Bowen. Monmouth were also in action yesterday when they entertained Cwmamman United with Elliot Ford and Andrew Rogers scoring the goals in a 2-1 victory. Goytre have struggled somewhat of late, so a thumping 6-1 success at relegation-threatened Ystradgynlais was more than welcome. Rob Surtees claimed a hat trick, with other goals coming from Adam Roberts (2) and Craig Jolliffe. However, the game is almost up for bottom-placed Abertillery Excelsiors, who lost for the 21st time in 31 league starts - this time 5-1 at home to AFC Llwydcoed after Matthew Lewis had given them a 20th-minute lead. Midweek fixtures involving Gwent clubs (kick-offs 6.30pm unless stated): Tuesday: Division One - Croesyceiliog v Newport YMCA; Pontardawe Town v Caldicot Town. Division Three - Risca United v Merthyr Saints; Seven Sisters v Aberbargoed Buds. Wednesday: Division One - Cwmbran Town v Caerleon (7.15pm). Division Two - Cwmbran Celtic v Treharris Athletic. Division Three - Goytre v AFC Llwydcoed; Monmouth Town v Ystradgynlais.
28 April 2008 from Western Mail GOYTRE went to the top of the Welsh League in the most convincing of fashions with a 5-0 romp at Newport YMCA. Richard Ryan bagged a hat-trick of goals and Daniel Thomas swooped for a brace. Dinas Powys in second place went on the rampage at Cambrian and Clydach cruising to a 6-0 win but former champions Ton Pentre, who have stumbled lately, could only manage a goalless draw at Croesyceiliog and now find themselves in third place in the table. ENTO Aberaman who could still finish second and clinch a Welsh Premier spot edged home 1-0 against Caldicot, Neil Davies grabbing the winner. A Lee Pratt goal on 55 minutes was sufficient to give Bridgend victory at neighbours Maesteg in a fiery game which led to four dismissals following a late brawl. Garw crashed to their 31st defeat in 33 games going down 4-1 at home to Caerleon. Bettws are top of the Second Division after a 5-1 thumping of Treharris Athletic, Paul Evans, Christian Burge, Darren Robinson, Robert Huddlestone and Anthony Rawlings on target. Pentwyn Dynamos, who beat Merthyr Saints 3-0, are promoted from the Third Division but it is not yet known who will join them.
FIVE-STAR GOYTRE FIRE FIRST DIVISION WARNING 28 April 2008 from South Wales Evening Post
Goytre
United made a huge statement in winning 5-0 against Newport YMCA at
Mendalgief Road in the first division. The Welsh Cup semi-finalists
ended up a well-beaten side as Goytre swept into a 3-0-interval lead
thanks to a goal brace from Richard Ryan and a strike from Daniel
Thomas. 27 April 2008 by Our Correspondent, Wales On Sunday TON Pentre dropped from first to third after a frustrating trip to Croesyceiliog, where they were held to a goalless draw in Division One of the MacWhirter Welsh League. The new leaders are Goytre United, who put five past Newport YMCA, with Richard Ryan grabbing a hat-trick. Daniel Thomas scored the other two. Dinas Powys move into second place.
MACWHIRTER WELSH LEAGUE PREVIEW 25 April 2008 by Terry Daley, South Wales Argus YOU wouldn’t have believed it when they were relegation candidates after the opening dozen matches of the season, but Aberbargoed Buds could be the only Gwent-based MacWhirter Welsh League outfit to secure tangible success at the end of the season. Seventh-placed Buds are only eight points behind and have a game in hand over AFC Llwydcoed, who are in the third and final promotion spot in the Division Three table. Just how much of a remarkable turnaround has been achieved by manager Billy Vaughan’s men can be detected by looking at the stats. By November 12, the Buds lay languishing in the relegation zone having taken only 12 points from a possible 36. However in the 17 league games since, Vaughan has guided the Buds to picking up no less than 37 from 51 on offer and they are currently unbeaten in six matches – including winning their last four. On Saturday, the Buds, who have five games remaining, travel to face the team immediately above them, Cwmaman Institute, although Vaughan’s side will not move up a place should they win because they trail their hosts by five points. The Buds welcome back midfielder Chris Duggan, who missed Tuesday’s 4-2 away win over Merthyr Saints because of work commitments. Elsewhere in Division Three, Risca United and Monmouth Town have secured mid-table respectability and while Goytre are almost certain to retain their league status, Abertillery Excelsiors are all but doomed. Risca have an unchanged for squad for their visit to fourth-placed Newcastle Emlyn, Monmouth's 16-year-olds Matthew Tabb and Ashley Ford maintain their places in the squad for Saturday’s match at Llantwit Fardre and Sunday’s home encounter with Cwmamman United. Goytre will run the rule over several walking wounded, who picked up knocks in Wednesday’s 3-1 home defeat by Cwmamman, ahead of their away clash at Ystradgynlais. Bottom-placed Excelsiors are at full strength for the visit of AFC Llwydcoed, who are third, but the Gwent club could be relegated if the lose and other results go against it. Another side in deep relegation trouble is Division Two side Tredegar Town, who are unable to finalise a squad for their visit to Ely Rangers, while full-strength Cwmbran Celtic could move up to 11th with a victory at Llangeinor. But spare a thought for Llanwern. On Wednesday they managed to hold already-promoted Barry Town to a highly-credible 0-0 home with only 12 men – including manager Laurence Owen, who was forced into his first appearance for three years five minutes from time. To make matters worse, defender Gareth Wysome was sent off and will sit out a one-game suspension at Pontyclun, where Llanwern will be minus another seven players. Out for various different reasons are top scorer Steve Perszewski, Steve Stinton, Greg Taylor, Troy Quarterely, Michael Vaux, Carl Bough and Matthew Currie. In Division One, Newport YMCA have taken a significant lead over Caerleon in the race to become the county’s highest-placed club. YMCA, who are minus skipper John ‘Frankie’ Pardue and Robert Wigmore but welcome back Alex Jenkins and Lewis Sommers to their starting line-up for the home game with Goytre United, are three points clear of Caerleon with a match in hand and a better goal difference. Caerleon, who lost 1-0 at home to ENTO Aberaman Athletic on Wednesday, are able to call again on the previously-suspended duo Josh Collins and Jamie Hillier while skipper Martyn Phillips is available for the visit bottom-placed Garw. However defender Todd Quarterley will miss out with a back strain against opponents, who are already relegated having conceded an amazing 209 goals foals in only 32 league games. Mid-table Caldicot Town, who were beaten 2-1 at home by Dinas Powys on Tuesday, must five fitness tests to several players ahead of the away encounter against Aberaman while relegation-threatened Croesyceiliog have three missing for the home game against leaders Ton Pentre. Out are Mark Morris, Paul Brown and Mike Dewar, although it’s hoped that Jodi Jenkins and Daniel Clouth will be available again. Cwmbran Town are without a game and return to action on Wednesday, when they entertain Caerleon, kick off 7.15pm.
TON HAVE THE EDGE IN BIG TITLE HUNT 25 April 2008 by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo THE top three in the MacWhirter Welsh League are all on the road as the race for the title hots up. Leaders Ton Pentre head to Croesyceiliog while second-placed Goytre United go to Newport YMCA and Dinas Powys, third, visit Cambrian and Clydach. While long-serving Ton Pentre manager Kevin Richards leads his team on their title mission, Croesy’s joint team boss Chris Evans has announced his plans to step down. Evans has been in joint control with Neil Gilmore for eight years. But that partnership, which has steered Croesy from Gwent League football, comes to an end on Saturday, May 3 when they play already-relegated Pontypridd Town. “All good things come to an end,” said Evans. “There’s nothing sinister in me finishing, I just believe managers can get stale and that players can also get stale with managers. “I don’t know whether I shall be staying with the club. At the moment I’m also acting chairman, but I’ve not made my mind up yet.” Dinas manager Mark Jones believes his team will have to win their last four matches – after tomorrow they entertain Bridgend Town, Pontardawe – if they are to win the title. “It’s incredibly tight at the top and we have to win them all,” said Jones. An injury-time goal from David Hamm earned Dinas a crucial winner at Caldicot in midweek. Dinas are one point behind Ton Pentre and level on points with Goytre. Both ENTO Aberaman Athletic and Afan Lido, the two teams who have applied for promotion to the Principality Welsh Premier League, can still finish in the top two places.
GOYTRE BRACED FOR TOUGH TIME IN EAST WALES 25 April 2008 by Tony Poole, South Wales Evening Post
Second-placed Goytre United face another tough assignment in Gwent
tomorrow against Newport YMCA. The Port Talbot side came away from
Croesyceiliog with a 3-0 win in midweek thanks to two goals from Richard
Ryan and a Darren Lyons strike.
Afan Lido remain in striking distance of the leaders, following a 4-0
victory over relegated Garw at Blandy.
RAMPANT PONTY HIT PONTY FOR SIX 24 April 2008 by Tony Poole, South Wales Evening Post
Pontardawe stormed to a 6-0 victory over relegated Pontypridd at Afan
Lido in the MacWhirter Welsh League division one. The Swansea Valley
side, who led 2-0 at the break, cruised home on the back of goals from
Jonny Owen (2), Luke Harris, Andrew Stokes, Vincent Wattleworth and
Ashley Richards.
Jeff
Eckhart shot Risca two goals clear with Ceri Slyman getting both Ystrad
goals. HAMM KEEPS DINAS IN TITLE RACE 24 April 2008 from South Wales Echo DAVID Hamm headed an injury time winner for Dinas Powys to maintain their MacWhirter Welsh Football League title challenge. Hamm’s goal, two minutes into injury time, earned Dinas Powys a 2-1 victory at Caldicot Town. Wayne Morley had put the home team ahead with Drew Fahiya equalising. Dinas have four matches left in their quest for the championship, against Cambrian and Clydach (away), Bridgend Town (home), Pontardawe Town (home) and Cwmbran Town (home). Goytre United won 3-0 at Croesyceiliog, while Afan Lido defeated Garw 4-0 and ENTO Aberaman Athletic won 1-0 at Caerleon. That leaves Ton Pentre top of Division One, one point in front of Goytre and Dinas Powys.
WEST END PUT FERRY IN REAL DANGER OF DROP 23 April 2008 by Tony Poole, South Wales Evening Post
West End
came on strong during the second half to record a 3-0 victory over
Briton Ferry at Pryderi Park in the they now only have home and away
games against Troedyrhiw and a visit from Grange Quins to pull clear of
MacWhirter Welsh League division two on Monday night. This latest
setback pushed Ferry closer to relegation, and danger. CROESY MANAGER HEADING FOR EXIT 23 April 2008 from South Wales Argus CROESYCEILIOG are in the hunt for a new manager after joint boss Chris Evans confirmed he is to quit at the end of the season. Evans has been in joint control of the Woodland Road outfit in tandem with Neil Gilmore for the past eight years, the pair having dragged the club up from grass roots Gwent football to Division One of the MacWhirter Welsh League. Now, however, the partnership is to come to an end following Croesyceiliog's final match of the campaign - the away fixture with already-relegated Pontypridd Town on May 3. Evans and Gilmore started together with Girlings FC, who they took through to Division One of the Gwent County League before joining Croesyceiliog - where they repeated the feat and also guided the club to its current status. "But all good things come to and end," remarked Evans. "There's nothing sinister in me finishing, I just believe managers can get stale and that players can also get stale with managers. "I don't know whether I shall be staying with the club. At the moment I'm also acting chairman, but I've not made my mind up yet. "I'd like to say a big thank you to Neil (Gilmore), who has been brilliant over the years and, of course, to everyone who has supported me at the club." Evans revealed Croesyceiliog could announce the identity of a new manager as early as next week, but stressed he didn't know if Gilmore was in the frame to take over. "It might be Neil on his own, Neil with someone else or a new man by himself - I really am unaware of the committee's feeling," continued Evans. "There's a lot going on off-the-field at the club with, hopefully, the installation of new floodlights and changing rooms. "So you can see the club is attempting to progress and it'll be great now if we can finish the season off by retaining our Division One status." Croesyceiliog are currently 10 points clear of Maesteg Park Athletic, who have three matches in hand and are 16th position - the highest relegation spot. There is another important round of MacWhirter Welsh League Division One matches tonight when a home Croesyceiliog win over Goytre United would edge them closer to safety (kick off 6.30pm). Caerleon can climb above seventh-placed Newport YMCA if the beat visiting ENTO Aberaman Athletic by five clear goals while Cwmbran Town can move up a place to 11th with a home victory over a Taffs Well (7.30pm). In Division Two, Cwmbran Celtic host Swansea-based West End (6.30pm) and Llanwern entertain Barry Town (7.15pm) while Goytre will have home advantage over Cwmamman United in a Division Three clash (6.30pm).
EX-HAMMER SCORES IN TON PENTRE THRILLER 22 April 2008 by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo DIVISION One leaders Ton Pentre have four away matches left in their chase to clinch the title. Any of the top six could still finish champions with Goytre United and Dinas Powys posing the biggest threat to Ton Pentre. And the big clash will come when Goytre play Ton Pentre at home on May 7 (7.15pm). Before that, Ton go to Croesyceiliog on Saturday and Maesteg Park on April 30, before their final match at Caldicot Town on May 10. In their last home match of the season, Ton Pentre thumped Taffs Well 5-0. Former West Ham player Andrew Pearson put the Rhondda Bulldogs ahead when he scored the only goal of the first half. Jon Kift (2), Alyn Jones and Mark Crutch were Ton’s second-half scorers. Dinas Powys, who play Caldicot tonight (7pm), maintained their challenge with a 4-0 win at Garw thanks to goals from Dwaine Strong (2), Shelton Payne and Jason Cowan. In Division Two, second-placed Barry Town look sure to be promoted after a 2-1 win at West End. Bettws are table leaders on 65 points, while Barry have 62 with three matches left. UWIC, Ely Rangers and West End could all still get to 62 points, but Barry would have to lose all three of their remaining fixtures, while their goal difference is plus 33. West End gave Barry a fright at Jenner Park by taking the lead and earning a penalty, which was saved by goalkeeper Dan Bradley. Christian Mills equalised on the hour and five minutes later Gareth Picknell headed in Lewis Cosslett’s free-kick for the winner. Barry’s next match is away to Llanwern at Spytty Park tomorrow (7.15pm). Barry Town is offering two tickets for the price of one at the last home match on April 29 against Llangeinor (7.45pm).
ABERAMAN AND LIDO IN A PREMIER PUSH 21 April 2008 from South Wales Echo SUCCESS for ENTO Aberaman Athletic or Afan Lido in the MacWhirter Welsh Football League will spell heartbreak for Caersws. Aberaman and Lido are the only First Division teams who applied for promotion and are in a position to achieve their aims. They each have to close a gap over the closing weeks of the season. But if either can make it into the top two then that team would be promoted. The result of that would be relegation from the Principality Welsh Premier League for Caersws. They currently stand second from bottom, just ahead of relegated Llangefni Town. Now, though, Caersws must watch Welsh League results to see how Aberaman and Afan Lido are doing Aberaman defeated Maesteg Park 2-0 over the weekend and are fourth, while Lido slipped up 2-1 at Caerleon. That was a massive blow for Lido, who have now lost on all three trips to Caerleon since they returned to Welsh league football Luke Cueto put Caerleon ahead on seven minutes and that was the only goal of the first half. Chris Pearce made it 2-0 before Caerleon were reduced to 10 players when Jamie Hillier was sent off. Afan Lido pressed, but had to wait until two minutes into injury time for their goal when Justin Williams and Steve Davies combined to set up Michael Waters. Ton Pentre, 5-0 winners against Taffs Well, remain top of Division One ahead of Goytre United. Goytre defeated Caldicot Town 3-0. Dinas Powys are third after their 4-0 win against Garw thanks to goals from Dwaine Strong (2), Shelton Payne and Jason Cowan.
YM AND CAERLEON STILL SLUGGING IT OUT 21 April 2008 by Terry Daley, South Wales Argus IT’S as you were in the top half of the MacWhirter Welsh League Division One table with home wins for Newport YMCA and Caerleon as the pair continue their battle to become Gwent’s top team. However YMCA’s 2-1 success came over Croesyceiliog, who still have some work to do to steer themselves clear of the relegation zone, while Caldicot Town remain 10th following a 3-0 defeat at title-chasing Goytre United, who are second. YMCA scored through a ninth-minute penalty from defender Gareth Lynch following a handball decision against visiting defender Mike Dewar. And there was a second to come from Daniel Cueto three minutes from the interval, when he’d snapped up a loose ball following a save by visiting goalkeeper John Bailey from home skipper John ‘Frankie’ Pardue. At that stage, beaten Welsh Cup semi finalists YMCA could well have held a larger lead, although Croesyceiliog also went close on a couple of occasions. After the break, Croesyceiliog gradually got more into the game although they didn’t really look like scoring until substitute Adie Pearce set up Dewar with just a couple of minutes remaining. The visors pressed hard for an equaliser, but it would have been a huge injustice had the home team not gained three points from this often untidy affair. Quite naturally, YMCA boss Mark Coldrick was the happier man afterwards: “We probably dominated the game in the first half when we got our noses in front with those two goals,” he said. “We were looking to take it on in the second half, but it didn’t really materialise and I believe the knee injury to Robert Wigmore unsettled us a little bit. “We lost a bit of shape and fair do to Croesyceiliog, they kept battling away to the death. “We knew they would of course and still remind ourselves that we were 3-0 up against them in a cup game going back a season or two – and they ended up 4-3 winners!. “So we always knew even at 2-0 that they would still come at us and that’s how it proved to be again. “It wasn’t the best of displays in the second half, but we’re happy with the three points and we’ll take that onto the next game now.” Joint Croesyceiliog manager Chris Evans was in full control in the absence of the ill Neil Gilmore and offered no excuse for his team’s defeat. “Our goal really was too little, too late although we did force a couple of late corners – but we never looked likely to score again,” said Evans. “We had too many players putting in poor performances to be honest and for some reason we looked a tired side. “We didn’t appear to be hungry enough for it and we’ve no complaints about the final outcome.” YMCA remain seventh while Croesyceiliog, who host Port Talbot-based Goytre United on Wednesday, are still 10 points clear of Maesteg Park, who have three games in hand. Caerleon are still eighth following a fine, 2-1 home victory over Afan Lido, whose defeat seriously harms their prospect or gaining promotion to the top-flight Principality Welsh Premier League. Wide midfielder Luke Cueto put the home side ahead before the interval, striker Chris Pearce making it 2-0 in the second period before fifth-placed Lido reduced the arrears in injury time. Many were critical of the match referee’s performance and he certainly crossed himself off everyone’s Christmas card-list when he sent off Caerleon left back Jamie Hillier following a second caution. Manager Brendan Dowd though refused to get drawn into discussing the official, instead concentrating on only his own side’s display. “We’ll it was certainly good enough to warrant a win,” said Dowd, whose team must beat visiting ENTO Aberaman Athletic by six clear goals on Wednesday if it is to leapfrog YMCA. “We were on top for most of the first half and this is an excellent result for us over a well-organised side.” Caldicot held Goytre United to 0-0 by the hour mark before eventually slipping to an expected reverse, but they will seek to make amends on Tuesday when they entertain third-placed Dinas Powys at their Jubilee Way home. Cwmbran Town, who are 12th, were without a match and are next in action on Wednesday when the team immediately above them, Taffs Well, are the visitors. In Division Two, Llanwern drew 0-0 at Briton Ferry Athletic following a pleasing performance. However the sixth-placed Newport Stadium outfit will be without leading scorer Steve Perszewski for possibly the rest of the season. The talented striker will receive a three-match suspension for being straight re-carded following a foul and having been dismissed earlier in the season, could be issued with another two-game ban. Cwmbran Celtic, who are at home to Swansea-based West End on Wednesday, were held 1-1 by visiting Garden Village thanks to a second-half equaliser from midfielder Craig Cheedy, while relegation-threatened Tredegar Town were without a match. However there was good news for the Gwent club when the teams immediately above and below them, Treharris Athletic and Troedyrhiw respectively, both dropped points in a 1-1 draw. Also not in action were Aberbargoed Buds, who will bid to maintain seventh position on Tuesday when they visit Merthyr Saints. Tenth-placed Risca United, who are at struggling Ystradgynlais on Tuesday, lost 1-0 away to bottom-but-one Morriston Town with Monmouth Town maintaining 11th position after goals from Jack Alderdice and Justin Harris earned them a 2-1 away success at high-flying Newcastle Emlyn. Goytre cemented 12th place with a fine 4-0 on-the-road success at Seven Sisters, where Graham Mason (2), Joe Carless and Daynor Thorpe were the scorers. With not even league officials yet sure exactly how many teams are to be relegated, clubs are working on the theory that at least two will go down. Therefore although basement club Abertillery Excelsiors gained only their fourth win of the campaign, 1-0 at home over Porthcawl Town with Daniel Baugh netting, they still trail Ystradgynlais by seven points with only four games left. * Midweek fixtures involving Gwent clubs (kick offs 6.30pm, except where stated). Tuesday: Division One – Caldicot Town v Dinas Powys (7.30pm). Division Three – Merthyr Saints v Aberbargoed Buds; Ystradgynlais v Risca United. Wednesday: Division One – Caerleon v ENTO Aberaman Athletic; Croesyceiliog v Goytre United; Cwmbran Town v Taffs Well. Division Two – Cwmbran Celtic v West End (Swansea); Llanwern v Barry Town (7.15pm). Division Three – Goytre v Cwmamman United.
GOYTRE WIN AGAIN BUT CAN'T CLOSE THAT GAP 21 April 2008 by Tony Poole, South Wales Evening Post
Second-placed Goytre United remain three points adrift of Ton Pentre
after gaining a 3-0 home win over Caldicot in the first division.
Following a goalless first half, an eighth goal of the campaign from
Daniel Thomas put Goytre ahead on the hour, with two strikes from
Richard Ryan wrapping things up.
However, Afan Lido slid down to fifth place after surrendering an
unbeaten away record in the league in losing 2-1 at Caerleon. KIFT BRACE AS TAFFS WELL TROUNCED 20 April 2008 by Our Correspondent, Wales On Sunday IT was goals galore in the MacWhirter Welsh League’s top division as leaders Ton Pentre smashed Taffs Well 5-0 at Ynys Park. A Jonathan Kift brace, and goals from Andy Pearson, Alyn Jones and Mark Crutch helped Ton remain clear of second-placed Dinas Powys who won 4-0 at bottom-placed Garw – Dwaine Strong got a brace and Shelton Payne netted while Jason Cowan scored a penalty. A Richard Ryan brace and a Daniel Thomas strike helped Goytre beat Caldicot 3-0. Newport YMCA won 2-1 at home to Croesyceiliog, Daniel Cueto finding the net while Gareth Lynch scored a penalty. Afan Lido failed to snatch victory at Caerleon, Michael Walters’ goal for Lido cancelled out by strikes by Luke Cueto and Chris Pearce. Chris Summers and Dean Morris helped ENTO Aberaman beat Maesteg Park 2-0. Bridgend Town overwhelmed Pontardawe 5-0 at Locks Lane. Bettws stay top of Division Two, despite a 3-0 defeat at Caerau Ely, but Barry narrowed the gap with a 2-1 win at West End. Cardiff Corries pipped Llangeinor 3-2 with Rhys Yates, Andy Smith and Richard Marshall netting for the Corries and Lloyd Griffiths and Nicholas Maggs for the visitors. Briton Ferry and Llanwern drew 0-0 while Troedyrhiw and Treharris drew 1-1. Kerry Kinsey scored for Troedyrhiw and Kevin Bounds levelled matters. Ammanford beat Pontyclun 2-0, Dean Jenkins and Luke Fayers on target. In Division Three, Pentwyn Dynamo thumped Llansawel 5-0. Goytre beat Seven Sisters 4-0 with a brace apiece for Graham Masson and Joe Carless. A Daniel Baugh goal helped Abertillery beat Porthcawl 1-0. AFC Llwydcoed secured a 2-1 win against Merthyr Saints. Penrhiwceiber also won 2-0 at Cwmamman United while Morriston beat Risca 1-0.
19 April 2008 by Tony Poole, South Wales Evening Post
Pontardawe Town battled hard without
success during a 2-0 home defeat against high-flying ENTO Aberaman in
MacWhirter Welsh League division one. Ponty had looked more likely to
score before Chris Summers shot the Cynon Valley side ahead on the
half-hour mark.
Seven
Sisters came from behind to force a 1-1 draw with Cwmaman Institute at
the Welfare Ground in the third division. 18 April 2008 by Terry Daley, South Wales Argus WHILE Newport YMCA’s magnificent Welsh Cup run earned the club massive publicity, it’s almost certainly escaped the notice of many that the Gwent club can still secure a top-six league finish. While the MacWhirter Welsh League Division One championship title is probably just out of YMCA’s reach, any position from second to sixth is achievable for manager Mark Coldrick’s side, which entertains Croesyceiliog at Mendalgief Road on Saturday. Currently seventh, YMCA are 13 points adrift of leaders Ton Pentre with two matches in hand, but are only four points behind the team immediate above them, ENTO Aberaman Athletic, having played one game less. Coldrick is expected to welcome back top goalscorer Lewis Sommers from a hamstring injury and Danny Cueto, who missed a mid-week reserve fixture to ensure his fitness, following a shin-splint problem, while Junior Borg (ankle) and Aaron Stewart (groin) should also make it. However Alex Stewart has been sidelined for the remainder of the campaign with knee ligament damage. Croesyceiliog have improved recently and are currently 10 points clear of the drop zone, although will be without leading scorer Jodi Jenkins, Paul Brown and Ross Bristow – but Chris Watkins and Nicky McGrath will make welcome returns Cwmbran are without a match, although they climbed a couple of places on Wednesday when a hat-trick by Job Frumba was the highlight of a 6-0 away win over already-relegated Garw Athletic. Eighth-placed Caerleon are chasing YMCA hard and are just three points worse off with a game in hand, but their county rivals have a better goal difference. The Cold Bath Road team entertain promotion-seeking Afan Lido and will be minus central defender Josh Collins, sent off in Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat by Goytre United, and unavailable midfielder Wayne Jepson. Caldicot Town are tenth following a fine series of results, but face a huge task to do well at Port Talbot-based Goytre – although manager Jason Pritchard has a fully-fit squad to select from. In Division Two, Llanwern visit Briton Ferry Athletic seeking to improve on sixth position while Cwmbran Celtic host Garden Village looking to climb a place to 10th. Llanwern are minus five players in Greg Taylor and Troy Quarterely (both knee strains), Mike Binning and Matthew Curries (hamstrings) and Mike Vaux, who is out for three games because of a holiday. However they are hopeful to have Steve Stinton making a squad return while Paul Tanner has served a three-game suspension and Matthew Smith is available again. Celtic will again be minus striker Shane Williamson with a groin problem, but are hopeful veteran Kevin Payne recovers from a knee strain. Not-in-action Aberbargoed Buds are currently the county’s highest-placed Division Three outfit in seventh, but full-strength Risca, who are three rungs below, can move as many points close with an away success over relegation-threatened Morriston Town. Unchanged Monmouth Town are 12th of 18 and just have a bit more to do before they can class themselves as being safe, although it doesn’t come much harder than a visit to second-placed Newcastle Emlyn to get a positive result. Goytre have slipped to 14th and a shock 2-1 home defeat by Morriston on Wednesday, when Graham Mason was their scorer, means they, too, must improve if they are to retain the MWL status. However bottom-placed Abertillery Excelsiors, who will give fitness tests to several players ahead of their home game with Porthcawl Town, are all but down. There will be a new winner’s name engraved on the Gwent Senior Cup after next month’s final – even though one of the clubs lifted the trophy 37 years ago. MacWhirter Welsh League Division One side Caldicot Town face Division Two outfit Cwmbran Celtic at Abergavenny Thursdays’ Penypound Stadium on May 8, kick off 7.00pm. While Caldicot will seek a third competition win following successes in first 1979-1980 and then again in 1992-1993, Celtic actually went under the name of Cwmbran RC when they were victorious in 1970-1971. Just like the FA Cup, the Gwent Senior Cup has also produced some shock results – most notably Celtic’s 3-0, round-one win over Newport County in September. Caldicot kicked off the tournament as long ago as August 7, when they defeated visiting Newport YMCA 1-0 in a preliminary-round clash. While Celtic were seeing off the County, manager Justin Pritchard was leading Caldicot to a crushing 9-2 home round-one victory over holders Croesyceiliog at Jubilee Way. In the semi finals, Caldicot got past Cwmbran Town 2-1 at home while Celtic player-boss Mickey Copeman guided his team to a same-scoreline win over Aberbargoed Buds at Cwmbran Stadium.
LEADERS MUST SHOW BULLDOG SPIRIT IN QUEST FOR LEAGUE TITLE 18 April 2008 by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo LEADERS Ton Pentre, three points clear at the top of MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One, play their final home match of the season at Ynys Park tomorrow. Taffs Well are the visitors and the Rhondda Bulldogs must win to keep their title hopes on track. Second-placed Goytre United are three points behind with two games in hand – and the top two still have to meet at Glenhafod Park this season. Goytre are at home to Caldicot Town tomorrow, while Dinas Powys, in third place, are at bottom club Garw, who have conceded more than 200 goals in 30 matches this season. Apart from ENTO Aberaman who entertain Maesteg Park tomorrow, Afan Lido are the only team in the leading group who can still earn promotion and they travel to Caerleon. In Division Two, Bettws lead the way with Barry Town second and Cardiff Corries third. Bettws are at Caerau Ely tomorrow, while Barry Town travel to West End and Corries entertain Llangeinor. There are plenty of matches in midweek coming up. Cardiff Corries are at home to Grange Quins on Monday and then entertain Caerau Ely on Wednesday. Barry go to Llanwern on Wednesday, while Bettws travel to Garden Village on Tuesday.
BULLDOGS REMAIN ON TOP AFTER WIN AT DINAS 17 April 2008 by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo TON Pentre are still top of MacWhirter Welsh Football Division One after winning 2-0 at Dinas Powys last night. Two second-half goals steered the Rhondda Bulldogs to victory and they remain ahead of Goytre United, who have two games in hand. The top two still have to meet this season with Ton Pentre going to Goytre United on Wednesday, May 7. Goalkeeper Marty Ellacott was outstanding during the first half for Ton Pentre, while Jon Kift and Alyn Jones scored their goals. Andrew Pearson set up Kift for the first goal after 64 minutes, while substitute Jones added the second after 80 minutes. This Saturday, Ton Pentre are at home to Taffs Well, Goytre United entertain Caldicot Town, Dinas Powis travel to Garw and Afan Lido make the trip to Caerleon.
16 April 2008 by Terry Daley, South Wales Argus NEWLY-appointed director of football Gary Proctor has vowed Cwmbran Town will recruit more local players in time for the 2008-09 campaign. Following last season's relegation from the top-flight Principality Welsh Premier League, the Crows appointed Spaniard Guillermo Ganet as their new manager. Ganet packed his squad with a load of London-based players with the team going to the top of the MacWhirter Welsh League Division One table after a 2-0 away win over Gwent rivals Caldicot Town on October 6. However, matters quickly turned sour from that point with Ganet eventually having to recruit a whole new bunch of London-based players. As a result, the Crows have plunged from top to 13th place following an horrendous run. Cwmbran moved to promote Proctor from being Ganet's assistant and stressed in a statement that the former La Liga midfielder is still in charge of team affairs. The club also said Proctor's appointment will help build unity within the club.
