SKEWEN HELD TO HOME
DRAW BY CAERLEON |
30 March 2005 |
Skewen Athletic
failed to improve on fifth place in the Motaquote Welsh League
division one after being held to a 1-1 home draw by Caerleon last
night. This formed a third successive draw for the Tennant Park, and a
fifth in their last six starts, since winning the reverse match at
Cold Bath Road 3-0 last month.
A defensive lapse put
Caerleon ahead in the 50th minute, but soon after former Garden
Village player Steve Evans got on the end of an Andrew Fairbairn cross
to level from close range.
During the closing stages Skewen had the best chances to break the
deadlock but Ashley Richards headed over the top while Carl Mainwaring
also missed out.
Betws triumphed 3-0 at Garw in the Bridgend derby, but the wet state
of the White Tips ground caused the postponement of the clash between
Barry Town and Ely Rangers.

TOWN SEE LEAD CUT AFTER DRAW
|
28 March 2005 |
| Leaders
Pontardawe Town saw their lead at the top of the second division cut
to six points after being held to a 1-1 draw by Porthcawl Town at the
Recreation Ground. The Seasiders took the lead in the 35th minute when
a long-range effort from Michael Flanagan flew past goalkeeper Lee
Williams.
Richard Lewis missed two
good chances to open Ponty's account, and they eventually clawed their
way back thanks to an own goal.
Martin Morgan made contact with a 52nd-minute free-kick keeper William
Alston stranded.
Though Ponty carved out some good chances to take all three points,
the safe hands of Alston thwarted them.
Lewis, Layton Thomas and top scorer Jamie Bowen all went close as
Ponty had to be satisfied with a point.
Second-placed Pontypridd swept to a 7-1 victory over Garden Village at
Stafford Common, improving their goal difference in the process.
Carmarthen Town's Chris Summers appeared in Pontypridd colours and got
four goals.
Summers shot the Ynysangharad Park club ahead in the second minute,
with Ceri Harding doubling the lead in the 16th minute.
Ahead 2-0 at the break, two more from Summers took the visitors out of
sight before Dave Rimmer converted a penalty.
It was the turn of ex-Swan Jonathan Keaveny to score from the penalty
spot in the 75th minute, while injury-time goals from Summers and
Steve Powell completed a sorry day for Village.
Bryntirion Athletic moved up to third, a point behind Pontypridd from
four less games, with a 4-0 home win over relegation-threatened
Tillery.
Jonny Fulton opened the scoring and a Jonathan Cuss strike made it 2-0
at the break.
Richard Jago and Dan Hooper were also on target for the Bridgend side,
who squandered many good openings.
Bottom-placed Seven Sisters brought a seven-match run without a win to
an end with a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over Caldicot.
A seventh goal of the season from Chris Herdman in the 35th minute
sent the home side on their way.
Seven goalkeeper Adrian Barnsley experienced little in the way of
action, and it came as no surprise when they sealed victory midway
through the second period.
Richard Barness was tripped in the box, and Richard Herdman
confidently drilled home the penalty.
The win, only their fourth in the league this season, lifted Seven to
within a point of both Tillery and Morriston.
Ammanford failed to complete a quickfire double over Merthyr Saints,
drawing 0-0.
In the third division, Cwmaman battled back to earn a 1-1 draw with
Risca & Gelli at Grenig Park.
The visitors were the dominant force in the opening half and
deservedly led 1-0 at the break. But once Cwmaman warmed to their
task, they began to make things happen in front of goal and striker
Steve Williams was felled in the box.
He scored from the penalty spot and near the end Timothy Hendra missed
a great chance to earn maximum points.
But Ystradgynlais failed to halt Croesyceiliog's promotion push in a
3-0 defeat at Woodland Road.
Croesy possessed too many aces for under-strength Ystrad, who were
without Chris Courtney, Daniel Jenkins and brothers Andrew and Dave
Miller.

PONTARDAWE OUT TO KEEP PUSH GOING
|
25 March 2005 |
| Second
division leaders Pontardawe Town will be looking to take another step
towards an immediate return to the top flight when they entertain
Porthcawl on Sunday. Because of the World Cup qualifier between Wales
and Austria at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium tomorrow afternoon, there
is no league programme but there is local interest attached to all
five matches in the second tier on Sunday.
Ponty wait on long-term
absentees Simon Davies and Phil Davidson, but Paul Davey, having
received two yellow cards during last Saturday's 2-2 draw in
Penrhiwceiber, serves a one-match ban.
Former Neath front man Carl Edwards, who was introduced in the Cynon
Valley, retains his place in the squad, while striker Layton Thomas
returns from Welsh Premiership duties with Afan Lido.
This will form the first meeting of the season between the clubs, with
the Seasiders unbeaten in their last six league outings.
Included in that sequence are draws against two promotion-seeking
clubs - Pontypridd and Newport YMCA.
While fourth-placed Bryntirion entertain Tillery, two other sides
battling for promotion - Garden Village and Pontypridd - meet at
Stafford Common.
The Village people will have a score to settle with Ponty, having
surrendered a seasonal away record 4-0 at Ynysangharad Park on
February 19.
Manager Robert Lloyd is hoping to complete the transfer of Chris
Thomas from Neath but, even if he does sign him, he will not be
involved against Pontypridd.
Ammanford will be looking to wrap up a quickfire double over Merthyr
Saints when the sides clash at Rice Road.
The Carmarthenshire side triumphed 3-1 at Merthyr earlier in the
month, and returning to squad duties will be Paul Fowler, Jamie Harris
and Gavin Morris.
However, Tristan Lewis and Lee Williams have both taken up coaching
duties in the States, while there are fitness doubts surrounding Steve
Evans, John Garland and Steven Francis.
Seven Sisters kick-off at 2pm against Caldicot, with the Dulais Valley
side attempting to overturn a 4-2 away defeat last Saturday at the
hands of the Monmouthshire side.
Striker Nigel Westall still has a three-match ban hanging over him,
but Seven are hoping to welcome back Owen Llewellyn.
In the third division, Ystradgynlais visit fellow newcomers
Croesyceiliog, and have Chris Courtney to replace unavailable top
scorer Craig Hopkins.
Andrew Miller is still sidelined through suspension.
When the two teams last met in December December Hopkins knocked in a
hat trick as Ystrad went down 6-4.
Cwmaman, who welcome Risca & Gelli to Grenig Park, have a fit squad to
chose from, following a midweek 2-2 draw at Afan Lido in the reserve
division.

NEATH GIVE THEIR HOPES LIFT
|
24 March 2005 |
| Neath
pulled clear of trouble at the bottom of the Motaquote Welsh League
with a 4-0 victory over relegation-threatened Garw at Llandarcy Park
last night. After Richard Howell fluffed a 23rd-minute penalty, two
goals in as many minutes just before half-time from Howell and Ryan
Penny left Neath in charge.
And they rounded things
off with a two-goal blast from Port Talbot Town striker Carl Shaw, one
from the penalty spot.
Leaders Ton Pentre were beaten 3-1 by Maesteg Park.

GOYTRE ROAR AS LYONS NETS FIVE TO SINK
RANGERS |
21 March 2005 |
| Striker
Darren Lyons scored five times as Goytre Utd hit Ely Rangers for six
in the first division. The Port Talbot village side triumphed 6-1 with
Lyons roaring into action after just 45 seconds.
He headed home his
second goal in the third minute, again on the end of a Michael Waters
cross, and then had a hat-trick goal ruled out after just eight
minutes.
His hat-trick effort was eventually recorded in the 38th minute, while
a fourth headed goal was registered two minutes later.
Kevin Bartley made it 5-0 at the break, and Lyons got their sixth on
the hour.
Though Ely pulled a goal back via former Cardiff City player Wayne
Matthews in the 68th minute, it was Goytre's day.
A similar scoreline unfolded at Llandarcy as Neath went down 6-1
against promotion-seeking Grange Quins.
Quins, who led 2-1 at the break, also possessed a five-goal man in
Mattie Davies, while Philip James completed the scoring near the end.
Neath had started promisingly, taking the lead after half an hour
through Richard Howell, and they missed chances to go 3-0 up.
After the game David Harris stood down as manager, and Paul Carpenter
is likely to be in charge for Wednesday's vital home game with Garw.
There was a goal drought at Cyncoed where UWIC and Skewen played out a
0-0 draw.
Andy Hill had Skewen's best chance near the end, but it wasn't to be.
Briton Ferry, who won 2-1 at third-placed AFC Llwydcoed, achieved the
result of the day in the top flight.
Though Anthony Walters put the Cynon Valley side ahead in the 55th
minute, it wasn't long before Rob Shannon equalised.
Shannon and Sam Brown then combined to set up a 75th-minute winner for
Chris Butt.
In the second division, leaders Pontardawe Town received a late sting
in the tail during a 2-2 draw with Penrhiwceiber at the Glassbrook.
Andy Workman shot the Cynon Valley side ahead after only two minutes,
with Ponty levelling in the 42nd minute when Marc Otten headed home a
Jamie Rickard free kick.
And in the final move of the half, Ponty's Richard Lewis was felled in
the box and Rickard converted the ensuing penalty.
Ponty still led 2-1 with five minutes to go, only for Workman to
equalise, and Paul Davey was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Bryntirion maintained their promotion challenge via a 3-1 home win
over Cardiff Corries, all the goals unfolding in the first half.
Though going a goal down after quarter of an hour, the Bridgend side
perked up and took the spoils thanks to goals from Richard Jago,
Matthew Lewis and Jonathan Cuss.
Garden Village beat Pontyclun at home 1-0 to maintain sixth spot with
Phil John getting the goal in the 50th minute.
With the bottom five clubs all losing, Ammanford improved their
standing with a goalless home draw against promotion-chasing Newport
YMCA.
The Rice Roaders were forced on the defensive in the opening period,
but they went on to control the second half and John Garland hit the
woodwork in the 70th minute.
Morriston went down 2-0 at third-placed Tredegar Town, but the game
turned on a 70th-minute goal that looked to have come from an offside
position.
Bottom-placed Seven Sisters once more leaked some dreadful goals in a
4-2 defeat at Caldicot.
Seven were twice on terms thanks to goals from Chris Herdman and Lee
Sullivan, but Caldicot came late to take the spoils.
In the third division, although Phil Eady made a successful return,
Cwmaman lost 2-0 at Caerau Ely.
But Ystradgynlais held high-flying Treharris Athletic to a 1-1 draw on
Saturday at Ynyscedwyn Road.
Ceri Slyman put the Swansea Valley side ahead in the 65th minute, but
once again they failed to defend a lead.
Then yesterday, Ystrad lost 2-1 at home to Pentwyn Dynamos. Despite
taking the lead with a 27th goal of the season from Craig Hopkins,
Ystrad were sunk by first-half goals from Nick Allen and Rob Cummins.

SKEWEN MOVE IN FOR PARK'S GARDNER
|
18 March 2005 |
| Skewen
Athletic have completed the transfer of Dale Gardner from Maesteg Park
ahead of tomorrow's encounter with Uwic at Cyncoed (1.30pm). However,
manager Andrew Dyer will be without suspended defender Andrew Birch,
while there are fitness doubts surrounding the two Steve Evanses.
The weekend's programme
starts tonight (7.15pm) at Tudor Park with a derby clash between
Maesteg Park and Bridgend Town.
Maesteg will be without defender Lee Michael, who injured a knee
during a collision with team-mate Paul Jones in last Saturday's 4-2
success at Skewen.
Briton Ferry, who face AFC Llwydcoed away, will be buoyed by
Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Neath in the West Wales Senior Cup
semi-finals.
The holders face Carmarthen Town in the final, but before have a
potentially tricky match in the Cynon Valley.
Ferry have three players available who were cup-tied in the 1-0 win at
Newport YMCA last Saturday - Chris Butt, Mark Parry and Rob Shannon.
Rob Cann made a goal-scoring return against Neath in midweek, and
Steve Cox has also played well during both cup victories.
Goytre United also have players back for their home encounter with Ely
Rangers.
Ryan Frankcomb, Darren Lyons and Michael Waters are all available, but
the biggest worry surrounds goalkeeper as Andrew Sparkes is an
absentee.
Neath have Ryan Penny back from suspension for their home game with
promotion-seeking Grange Quins.
In the second division, leaders Pontardawe Town have top scorer Jamie
Bowen back from suspension for a difficult assignment against
Penrhiwceiber at the Glassbrook.
Defender Marc Otten and goalkeeper Lee Williams, who were both
cup-tied at Bryntirion last Saturday, return to the squad but there
are fitness doubts surrounding Phil Davidson, Simon Davies and Rob
Folland.
Ammanford have brought their kick-off forward to 1.30pm against
high-flying Newport YMCA at Rice Road.
There is a strong possibility of midfield dynamo Steve Evans making a
comeback, and also returning from the side that triumphed 3-2 at
Merthyr Saints last Saturday are striker Nathan Jones and goalkeeper
Craig Morris.
However, Carmarthen- shire League side Camford have recalled
experienced striker Paul Fowler, while Jamie Harris is unavailable.
Garden Village boss Robert Lloyd brings back Dave Rimmer and Mark
Lloyd into his squad for a home encounter with Pontyclun, while
Morriston hope to have Adrian Blake back for their clash at Tredegar.
Blake, who has missed most of the season, could take the place of the
suspended Mark Baker, but Jules Parry misses out because of a knee
injury.
Seven Sisters welcome back Nigel Westall from a lengthy ban for their
clash with Caldicot at Jubilee Way.
Manager Paul Evans is also hoping to include both Barry Herdman and
Owen Llewellyn in his starting line-up.
In the third division, Ystradgynlais have a home double header against
leaders Treharris Athletic tomorrow and Pentwyn Dynamos on Sunday
(both 3pm).
Top scorer Craig Hopkins has fully recovered from injury and starts
against Treharris, as will defender Carl Evans, but Andrew Miller is
suspended for both games.
An unchanged Cwmaman squad will be looking to build on last Saturday's
3-2 away victory over Penrhiwfer against Caerau Ely at Cwrt-Yr-Ala.

THREE OUT OF FOUR AIN'T BAD FOR THE
SEMI-FINALS |
14 March 2005 |
| Three
local clubs - Briton Ferry, Goytre Utd and Pontardawe Town - booked
places in the Shamrock Travel Cup semi-finals. They will be joined in
next month's draw by this season's surprise package, Monmouthshire
side Goytre, who gained a shock 1-0 win at first division UWIC.
Goytre Utd required a
penalty shootout to earn their place in the last four after the score
was locked on 0-0 after extra time.
In the end the Goytre hero was goalkeeper Andrew Sparkes, who only
rejoined the club last week from Neath, with three fantastic penalty
saves.
John Meacock, Kevin Bartley and Johnny Walkley struck the penalties
that earned the Port Talbot village side a 3-2 success.
Holders Briton Ferry required extra-time before disposing of second
division promotion hopefuls Newport YMCA at Mendalgief Road.
Sam Brown hit a 115th-minute winner as Ferry remain on course to
retain both the Shamrock Travel and West Wales Senior cups.
This was Ferry's third cup win over the Gwent side in 18 months, and
next up for Ferry is Wednesday's home tie with Neath in the West Wales
Senior Cup semi-finals.
Pontardawe defied the odds to win 2-1 at Bryntirion after Ian Morgan
received a straight red card after half an hour. At the time Ponty
trailed to an Ian Gearie goal, but Steve Stone restored parity with a
44th-minute free-kick from 25 metres.
The winner came in the 55th minute when home goalkeeper John Chorley
could only parry a Richard Lewis shot, but he followed up and saw his
second effort go in off a post.
In the first division, Maesteg Park extended their unbeaten run to
seven with a 4-2 victory over Skewen Athletic at Tennant Park.
The game turned at the 2-2 stage in the 75th minute when ex-Maesteg
defender Andrew Birch brought down Rob Walters in the box.
It earned Birch a red card, and Walters tucked away the penalty to set
up victory.
Andrew Fairbairn put Skewen ahead, with Matthew Rea equalising, but
right on half-time home defender Ian Vaughan scored an own goal.
Andy Hill's 21st goal of the season squared matters on the restart,
and after Walters converted the penalty he completed the scoring soon
after.
Walters has now scored 10 times in the last five matches and Maesteg
have climbed to seventh spot.
Neath suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Barry Town despite goalkeeper
Craig Evans making a superb penalty save.
Neath already led on the back of an Adam James strike when Evans, who
was brought into the side following the departure of Andrew Sparkes to
Goytre Utd, kept out the penalty.
However, two second-half goals from Lee Piotrowski set up a seasonal
double for Barry over Neath.
Bridgend Town scrambled a 1-0 win over bottom-placed Gwynfi Utd at
Coychurch Road, Mattie Williams heading home a Philip Clark corner in
the 55th minute.
In the second division, Ammanford almost tossed away a three-goal lead
in their 3-2 win over Merthyr Saints at Pant.
Tristan Lewis sent the Rice Roaders in with a 1-0 lead, and they
looked home and dry once Paul Fowler and top scorer Paul Hughes both
netted.
That made it 3-0 in the 70th minute, but Saints got two quick goals,
leaving Ammanford to cling on during a tense finish.
Garden Village bounced back to form with a 2-0 win over struggling
Llanwern at Stafford Common.
Paul Bromage headed home a Lewis Cann cross as early as the eighth
minute, but Village didn't wrap things up until Dan Ferro hit a superb
goal from 40 metres in the 70th minute.
There was little joy for either bottom-placed Seven Sisters, who
played out a goalless draw with Penrhiwceiber in the Dulais Valley, or
Morriston, who lost 2-0 at home to Porthcawl Town.
Michael Flanagan was on target for the Seasiders in the 10th minute
and substitute Scott Williams, a recent acquisition from Corus Steel,
completed the scoring near the end.
In the third division, Cwmaman triumphed 3-2 over Penrhiwfer in the
Rhondda Valley, Steve Williams hitting a 70th-minute winner from the
penalty spot.
The Carmarthenshire side were twice ahead thanks to a first-half brace
from Gary Davies.
Ystradgynlais, beaten just once in their last nine starts, gained a
4-1 win over Albion Rovers at Kimberly Park.
Gareth Shell and Liam Soroka secured Ystrad a 2-0 advantage at the
break, while further goals from substitute Craig Hopkins (penalty) and
Dave Miller carried them to only their second away win of the season.

GOYTRE SIGN NEW KEEPER AHEAD OF BIG CUP
CLASH |
11 March 2005 |
| Goytre
United have signed goalkeeper Andrew Sparkes from Neath ahead of their
Shamrock Travel Cup quarter-final tie at Betws tomorrow. Sparkes is
likely to figure at Betws Park after regular goalkeeper Gareth
Scantlebury joined Afan Lido this week.
However, Goytre have
three players cup-tied - Darren Lyons, Ryan Frankcomb and Michael
Waters - while Ian Jones remains on the injured list.
However, Carl Evans is now fit, and ex-Maesteg Park man Mark Dunford
is in line for a recall.
It's a big week for Briton Ferry on the cup front as they attempt to
keep both the Shamrock Travel and West Wales Senior Cups at Old Road.
Tomorrow they bid for a third cup win over Newport YMCA at Mendalgief
Road in 18 months, and are buoyed by the return of goalkeeper Chris
Curtis and midfield ace Lee Williams.
But Ferry will have to do without cup-tied duo Rob Shannon and David
Brown.
Pontardawe have some of their big guns back for the visit to
second-division rivals Bryntirion Athletic.
Ponty lost last Saturday's league encounter at the ground 4-0, but
their prospects look brighter in the cup with the return from
suspension of both Layton Thomas and Paul Davey while Rob Folland and
Richard Lewis are both fit.
The other quarter-final sees first division Uwic host struggling
third-division side Goytre.
In the first division, Skewen Athletic are looking to complete deals
with two players ahead of their home clash with in-form Maesteg Park.
The Tennant Park club have seen striker Richard Ryan return to Welsh
Premiership club Port Talbot Town.
Manager Andrew Dyer has signed midfielder Greg Harris from Pontardawe,
but they will be without injured Steve Evans and suspended David
D'Auria.
Maesteg have Lee Michael back from holiday.
Neath welcome Barry Town to Llandarcy Park.
In the second division, Garden Village are hoping that the return of
Ben Brown, Philip John and Craig Blake will improve their chances
against Llanwern.
All three missed last Saturday's disappointing 2-1 home defeat against
Merthyr Saints, which placed Village's promotion push under threat.
Morriston have Mark Baker suspended for their home clash with
Porthcawl Town, but young Gregory Williams is on his way back with the
reserve team.
Ammanford, who face Merthyr Saints in Pant, have both goalkeeper Craig
Morris and Mark Smolka missing.
They are hoping to include proven scorer Paul Fowler from Camford,
while Brian Davies, John Garland, Rob Griffiths, Michael Donne and
Nathan Jones could also be in the squad.
Bottom-placed Seven Sisters entertain Penrhiwceiber and in the third
division, Ystradgynlais have in jury problems ahead of their trip to
Albion Rovers.
Ruled out are top scorer Craig Hopkins, Carl Evans and Andrew Miller
while Lance Davies and Dave Griffiths are rated doubtful.
But Ystrad boss Andrew Hopkins is hopeful of including striker Steve
Courtney in his line-up.
Finally, Cwmaman have Gary Davies and David Thomas back on squad duty
for their trip to Penrhiwfer.

MERGER DECISION DOESN'T HAVE POSITIVE
RESULTS |
07 March 2005 |
| It wasn't
a good day for the soon-to-be merged clubs, Neath and Skewen Athletic,
in the first division. While Neath suffered a 2-0 defeat against
Bridgend Town at Coychurch Road, the surprise result of the day came
at the Cape where bottom-placed Gwynfi Utd held Skewen to a goalless
draw.
A two-goal burst midway
through the second half settled things for Bridgend against Neath,
Nana Baah and Scott Lanyon their marksmen.
Skewen created ample chances to have won at a canter in the Afan
Valley but failed to do so and Gwynfi picked up a first point since
holding Garw to a goalless draw on August 14.
The other shock result of the day was in the Cynon Valley where a Mike
Emery strike earned lowly Dinas Powys a 1-0 success at AFC Llwydcoed.
Leaders Ton Pentre took the top-of-the-table encounter with Grange
Quins 2-1, leaving them five points clear of Llwydcoed.
Goytre Utd came from behind to wrap up a 2-1 home victory over Betws
to leave themselves in good heart ahead of the cup meeting between the
clubs at Betws Park on Saturday.
Dale Smith shot the Bridgend village side into a fifth-minute lead,
with a Darren Lyons header restoring parity just before the break.
Kevin Bartley and Michael Waters then missed good chances to give
Goytre the lead, but they wrapped things up in the 80th minute when
Paul Lenihan headed home a Waters corner.
Briton Ferry heaped more misery on struggling Garw in winning 4-0 at
Blandy.
The star of the show for Ferry was much-travelled front man Rob
Shannon, who knocked in a hat-trick, while Leigh Morgan was also on
target.
Maesteg Park made it five wins on the trot with a 2-1 victory over
UWIC at Tudor Park.
Two second-half goals from Rob Walters, moving him on to 12 for the
season, did the trick for Maesteg, even though the students hit back
with a long-range effort from Gavin Chesterfield.
Second division leaders Pontardawe Town surrendered a 21-match
unbeaten run in spectacular fashion, losing 4-1 at second-placed
Bryntirion Athletic.
There seemed to be more resting on the game for the Bridgend side, and
Ponty paid a high price for having Jamie Bowen, Paul Davey and Layton
Thomas all suspended.
A first-half hat-trick from Brandon Walters set Bryntirion up nicely,
and substitute Jonathan Cuss added a goal late on.
In the other major divisional confrontation, Newport YMCA lifted
themselves into third spot with a 1-0 win at Tredegar.
Christian Avery got the all-important goal, while Garden Village lost
ground in the promotion race after losing 2-1 against Merthyr Saints
at Stafford Common.
Though Lewis Cann shot Village into a fifth-minute lead, two
second-half goals saw the Saints march to victory.
Ammanford could only manage a point in a 2-2 battle with fellow
strugglers Cardiff Corries at Rice Road.
Jamie Harris fired the Carmarthenshire side ahead, and although Paul
Hughes fluffed a penalty, he followed up to collect his 17th goal of
the season.
Ammanford led 2-1 at the break but Corries picked up a point on the
back of a 65th-minute strike.
There was further disappointment at the bottom for Seven Sisters and
Morriston, who both lost.
A 52nd-minute penalty from Leighton Price condemned Seven to a 1-0
defeat at Aberaman, while Morriston were beaten 3-1 at Caldicot.
Against the run of play Caldicot eased into a three-goal lead and
although Mark Baker pulled a goal back in the 67th minute, he was sent
off soon after.
Porthcawl Town gained a 2-1 victory over Pontyclun at Lock's Lane with
a Steve Atkinson goal providing them with impetus.
Atkinson netted after just two minutes, and they doubled the lead on
the hour when Lawrence James got a first goal for the Seasiders since
switching from Garw last summer.
Though Pontyclun pulled a goal back in the 85th minute through John
Ralph, it was Porthcawl's day.
In the third division, Ystradgynlais were held to a 1-1 draw in a drab
encounter with Llantwit Fardre at Ynyscedwyn Road.
Matthew Nottingham failed with a 68th-minute penalty, only to follow
up and give Ystrad the lead, but the Central Park club levelled a few
minutes on.
And Cwmaman went down to a surprise 2-1 defeat against lowly Fields
Park in Pontllanfraith.
The Grenig Park side were on the scoresheet first via a Roy Tomlinson
effort after half an hour, but the Gwent side took the honours on the
back of a Paul Pugh own goal and a Jason Lintern strike.
