Taffs Well 1, Cwmbrân Town 0

Saturday 11 August 2007

from http://www.cwmbrantownafc.co.uk

Cwmbrân Town got off on the wrong foot in their first Welsh League fixture,

suffering a 1-0 defeat to a resolute Taffs Well side that will be overjoyed with the 3 points.

The home side got off to a flyer, taking the lead in the fifth minute with an opportunistic strike. A free kick was sent in from the right, and striker Kevin Crocker headed in from close range.

From the re-start, it was all one-way traffic as the Crows went searching for an equaliser. Some well-worked free kicks, and attractive and successful wing play from Hodge and Omuta kept the Taffs Well defence very busy. But no goal was forthcoming.

The best chance of the half fell to Martin Houston, but his point-blank shot from an Omuta cross went inches wide. The first half ended with home keeper Howe left untested, and visiting keeper Jeffries resigned to spectating from the edge of the centre circle.

The second half continued in much the same way: flowing and attractive football from the Crows, with neat build-ups and deft touches, but ultimately no end product.

With the Crows pushing forward, and a high line being maintained by the defence, Taffs Well produced the best chance of the second half, but Jeffries did well and beat away the shot in a one-on-one situation.

Substitute Mark Shadrach had a shot late on, but Howe pushed the shot out for a corner, and the Crows were to be denied a share of the spoils as the game came to an end not long after.

Former Crow, and current Well boss Adam Moore will no doubt be pleased with the three points, but the Cwmbrân management team, players, and fans were left wondering what could have been.

Next up is the first home game of the season, versus Pontypridd Town, who were thumped 9-0 by Goytre United on the weekend!

ENTO ENJOY DOUBLE FIGURE ROMP

13 August 2007

by Phil Blanche, Western Mail

ENTO ABERAMAN hit the jackpot on the opening day of the Welsh League season.

They blasted an incredible 10 goals past hapless Garw as Jon Phillips led the charge with a double hat-trick. Kurt Nogan bagged three and Paul Dawes was also on target.

Garw could face an uncertain future after the departure of manager Chris Wells and almost their entire squad.

Goytre, runners-up in the league last season, also went on the rampage scoring nine without reply at Pontypridd, who have also suffered a summer of turmoil.

Richard Ryan hit four and Paul Lenihan (2), Michael Walters, Luke Bowen and Paul Wiseman also on target.

Dinas Powys made a confident start to the season, beating Croesyceiliog 2-1 thanks to late goals by Shelton Payne and Geza Hejgato from the penalty spot.

Newly-promoted Llanwern opened the Division Two campaign well with a 2-1 win over West End, Steve Perszewski and Michael Vaux netting.

Revitalised Barry Town overcame Garden Village 3-0 with Jeff Maclean scoring after three minutes with Rob Blatchford also netting to add to an own goal.

A Richard Herdman goal was enough to give Seven Sisters a 1-0 triumph at Cwmamman United in Division Three and Newcastle Emlyn opened with a 5-1 trouncing of Porthcawl.

LLANWERN'S PERFECT DAY

13 August 2007

by Terry Daley, South Wales Argus

SATURDAY'S opening-day MacWhirter Welsh League programme spelt disaster for Gwent football, with only Llanwern and Goytre of 11 clubs in action recording victories.

Llanwern's 2-1 Division Two win over Swansea-based West End at Newport Stadium was quite remarkable considering they were minus nine of their 24-strong squad for their first game following last season's promotion.

"West End are a good team and they had us under the cosh at one stage, although their goalkeeper made several outstanding saves," said manager Laurence Owen, who led Llanwern to runners-up spot in Division Three in 2006-07.

"But to win a game such as this against quality opposition without so many players available to us is a great achievement."

Striker Steve Perszewski scored 28 goals last season, and it took him just 15 minutes to get going again, with a second coming before the interval from Michael Vaux, while Marcus Power and Troy Quarterly both struck the woodwork.

Since being relegated from the top-tier Welsh Premier League at the end of last season, Cwmbran Town have appointed Spanish manager Guillermo Ganet.

He has stabilised the club's finances, as well as bringing in an army of players, mainly from Africa and Portugal, directly via his London-based football academy.

However, despite dominating for long periods at Taffs Well, it was the same old story for Cwmbran - a defeat.

The home side won 1-0, but had to be thankful for a great defensive display to earn them the three points after Kevin Crocker settled the game after only 10 minutes.

The Crows have a good chance of getting off the mark on Wednesday when they host a Pontypridd Town side in obvious crisis after getting beaten 9-0 at home by Port Talbot-based Goytre United on Saturday.

Croesyceiliog were Gwent's highest-placed side in the league last season, eighth, but they got off to a losing start by going down 2-1 at Dinas Powys - although the winning goal only came five minutes from time.

Midfielder Michael Pattimore struck with a long-range effort to put Croesyceiliog ahead, only for the home side to eventually overall them.

"We had a poor pre-season for many different reasons, but I can take several positives out of this match," said manager Chris Evans, who confirmed that although Chris Watkins would be back for Wednesday's away clash with not-in-action Caldicot Town, leading goalscorer Jody Jenkins will be unavailable.

Caerleon took the lead against visiting Bryntirion Athletic, managed by former Cwmbran Town striker Francis Ford and coached by ex-Crow Matthew Bishop, through Luce Cueto.

However, they had to rely on a late Matthew Hearne penalty to gain a hard-fought point from a 2-2 draw.

"I'd have taken the 2-2, and I suppose one point from a game we looked like losing is certainly better than nothing," said Caerleon chief Brendan Dowd.

Newport YMCA opened with a trip to face Ton Pentre, and although Dan Chamberlain grabbed a 30th-minute leveller, the former multi-champions went on to record a 3-1 success.

"We were still in it at 1-1 with 18 minutes left," explained YMCA boss Mark Coldrick. "But their second goal knocked the stuffing out of us, to be honest."

Goalkeeper Gareth Wesson, who has rejoined from Cwmbran Town, must undergo treatment to an injury which forced him off late in the game before he can be declared fit to face visiting Caerleon at Mendalgief Road tomorrow.

Cwmbran Celtic, last season's Division Three champions, began with a 0-0 draw at Briton Ferry, while Tredegar Town lost 2-1 at home to Ammanford, whose winner, after Craig Burgess had scored for the Gwent club, came with the very last kick of the match.

In Division Three there were defeats for Abertillery Excelsiors, Aberbargoed Buds and Risca United, but a point for debutants Monmouth Town.

The Excelsiors had only a goal from Matthew Fowler in a 4-1 reverse at Llantwit Fardre, the Buds' goalscorer in their 3-1 home loss to Pentwyn Dynamos came from namesake Ross Fowler, while Risca goalkeeper Ryan Mackerness was sent off after an own goal accounted for his side's effort in a 2-1 home defeat by Ystradgynlais.

Monmouth, though, earned a 2-2 home draw at Llansawel. The home side had taken a 2-0 advantage, but Matthew Bowen struck before and after the interval to gain parity for Monmouth: "We began with boys in our side and ended up with men," said club chairman Lee Robson.

Goytre gained a fine 3-0 success at Morriston Town, where debutants Gareth Willis (2) and Paul Melville scored the goals.

Midweek games involving Gwent clubs (6.30pm kick-offs, except where stated). Tuesday - Division One: Newport YMCA v Caerleon. Wednesday - Division One: Caldicot Town v Croesyceiliog (7.00pm); Cwmbran Town v Pontypridd Town (7.30pm). Division Two - UWIC v Llanwern. Division Three - Abertillery Excelsiors v Aberbargoed Buds; Goytre v Monmouth Town; Pentwyn Dynamos v Risca United.

RYAN ON THE RAMPAGE FOR EX-CHAMPS

13 August 2007

Tony Poole, South Wales Evening Post

Former champions Goytre United went goal crazy on the opening weekend of the season, triumphing 9-0 over Pontypridd Town at Ynysangharad Park. Richard Ryan netted four times with Paul Lenihan on target twice.

Michael Waters, Luke Bowen and the goal of the game from Paul Wiseman completed an emphatic victory.

However, ENTO Aberaman went one better when defeating troubled Garw 10-0 in another result that did little to enhance the standing of the league.

Pontardawe Town battled hard before going down 3-2 at newly-promoted Cambrian & Clydach.

Jamie Morris gave Pontardawe the lead only for defensive lapses to send the home side into a 3-1 lead.

Richard Cleverly pulled a goal back in the 78th minute while close to time Morris almost equalised.

Afan Lido opened the season with a 2-2 home draw against Bridgend Town. Mark Jones grabbed both goals for the Seasiders with Michael Parkin bagging a brace for the visitors.

Caerleon and Bryntirion also played out a 2-2 draw at Cold Bath Road with a late penalty from Matthew Hearne earning the home side a point.

In the second division, new manager Phil Fisher saw Ammanford gain a deserved 2-1 victory at Tredegar Town.

Tex Ward headed in a cross from Nathan McNeil in the 25th minute with Tredegar equalising in the 80th minute.

But the Rice Roaders kept plugging away and two minutes from time Matthew Jones and Richard Lewis carved out the opening for Lee Stone to fire the winner.

Briton Ferry played out a goalless draw with Cwmbran Celtic at Old Road.

Celtic had the better of the first half with Ferry keeper Rhys Jones pulling off a great save to deny Shane Williamson.

Ferry then showed a marked improvement - Chris Gardiner going close on a few occasions - but close to time Rob Webb blocked a goal-bound shot from Cwmbran's Lee Newman.

West End paid the price for giving Llanwern a two-goal start, losing 2-1 at Spytty Park.

The Steelmen did the damage during the first half and although new recruit Jonathan Keaveny reduced arrears in the 47th minute, it wasn't to be their day.

Also on the losing end were Garden Village, who went down 3-0 at Barry Town.

In the third division, Ystradgynlais pulled off an opening-day victory for the first time in the Welsh League when winning 2-1 at Risca United.

Craig Hopkins gave the Swansea Valley side a fourth-minute lead with Risca equalising on the half-hour.

The winner in the 68th minute was down to substitute Paul Kelly, who crossed for Hopkins to score at the far post.

Seven Sisters came late to take the spoils 1-0 against Cwmamman United at Grenig Park.

Richard Herdman rifled home to give Seven a morale-boosting victory.

Llansawel squandered a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 home stalemate with newcomers Monmouth Town.

Goals from Gareth Jones and Paul Carpenter had Sawel in the ascendancy, but Monmouth hit back to earn a point.

David Evans is hoping to be confirmed as Morriston manager on a permanent basis during the coming days.

In the meantime, he watched as the Dingle men lost 3-0 against Monmouthshire side Goytre FC.

Finally, Porthcawl only had a consolation goal from Gareth Duffy to reflect on during a 5-1 defeat at Newcastle Emlyn.

PHILPOTTS MAKES MONMOUTH TOWN WELSH LEAGUE DEBUT…AGE 50

12 August 2007

Monmouth Town stalwart Andy Philpotts continued his proud record of making a first team appearance every season for the past thirty-two years when he came on as a second half substitute for badly injured ‘keeper Robin Pick in the Kingfishers first ever Welsh League match against Llansawel, writes Lee Robson, Monmouth Town FC.

Pictured: Monmouth Town's Andy Philpotts

Philpotts who has been with the club since he was eighteen had long held a dream to appear in the Welsh league for the town but would rather it had been in better circumstances and probably twenty years ago.

“To be honest I had long given up thinking I’d ever get a game at this level but two years ago we made a fresh effort get better organised and plan for Welsh league football. I was delighted when we were promoted last season but would have been content to just carry out my normal duties as assistant manager. I always put myself on the bench though as you never know what might happen and in the welsh league we can name five subs. When Robin was injured I was administering the first aid and the next thing I know I had gloves and a keeper’s shirt on! It was great but even better to get a point after being two nil down."

Benny, as he known at the club, refused to rule out another appearance adding “Next time, who knows, I might get on and get the winner!”

GARW CRUMBLE IN 10-0 HAMMERING

12 August 2007

by Staff Reporter, Wales On Sunday

GARW and Pontypridd, who have both endured close seasons of turmoil, found the opening day of the MacWhirter Welsh League campaign like a nightmare yesterday as they suffered emphatic defeats.

Garw, who have recently lost player-manager Chris Wells and almost the entire squad, were on the end of a 10-0 hammering by ENTO Aberaman. Jon Phillips led the way with an incredible haul of six goals while Kurt Nogan bagged a hat-trick and Paul Dawes was also on target.

Ponty, who lost financial backer Leighton Samuel and a whole host of players during the summer, were given a 9-0 roasting by Goytre who last season chased Neath all the way to the wire in the race for the Welsh League crown.

Richard Ryan was top scorer here, grabbing four goals while Paul Lenihan bagged a brace and Michael Walters, Luke Bowen and Paul Wiseman were also on target.

It was not until the 21st minute that Goytre opened the scoring but they were then 6-0 up by the break.

Cwmbran Town, relegated from the Welsh Premier League last season, made a disappointing start to life at the lower level as they lost 1-0 at Taffs Well but Ton Pentre defeated Newport YMCA 3-1.

TOWN BOSS COOKS UP A MOTIVATION

11 August 2007

by Gareth Griffiths, South Wales Echo

GAVIN Chesterfield came up with a novel way to get his Barry Town players working together – along the lines of TV show “Ready, Steady, Cook”.

The Dragons’ new manager called his squad together in Barry’s newly refurbished clubhouse lounge at Jenner Park and split them into two groups.

Chesterfield gave each side £10 each and gave them the task of buying the ingredients and then cooking the best meal they could.

It worked well.

The players had fantastic fun shopping and then coming up with their meal.

I’m not sure whether Chesterfield merely wanted somebody to cook his tea, but I’m told a pasta dish was declared the winner.

Chesterfield then took the team out for an evening socialising together – and they start their MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two fixtures at home to Garden Village today.

Barry travel to play Grange Quins at Cardiff Athletic Stadium on Tuesday.

QUINS SET FOR A SWITCH TO PASTURES NEW

11 August 2007

by Gareth Griffiths, South Wales Echo

GRANGE Quins will be on the move this season.

They start their MacWhirter Welsh League fixtures at Cardiff Athletic Stadium, but will only play there for a few weeks.

The stadium is being demolished to make way for Cardiff City’s new stadium and when work starts, Quins will switch to a groundshare with Caerau Ely at their Cwrt-y-Ala home.

Then, when the new athletics stadium opens later in the season, Quins will move into their new home.

MAYOR KICKS-OFF NEW SEASON

Afan Lido 2, Bridgend Town 2

Friday 10 August 2007

Bridgend twice came from behind to gain a deserved point from their MacWhirter Welsh League, First Division, game at Afan Lido last night - the first game of the new season, writes Ray Parker.

It was a special occasion for Afan Lido striker Mark Jones, scoring twice for his home town club after being released by Cardiff City. Jones, who lives only a good kick from the ground, came through to youth ranks before he was spotted by Cardiff.

Jones has attracted the attention of clubs in the Conference and Afan Lido official Alan Howells said: "We are hoping to put him in the shop window so that a professional club will pick him up again. We will not stand in his way and would be delighted to see him go back into the professional game."

Jones gave Afan Lido, looking to regain a place back in the Welsh Premier League, the perfect start when he rounded off a neat move involving Steve Davies and Carl Edwards with a close-range header after 28 minutes. And only minutes from the interval he brought an excellent save from Bridgend keeper Brendan Cropley.

Bridgend made a bright start to the second-half and equalised after 47 minutes through Mike Parkin, also a former Cardiff City player. But six minutes later Jones restored Afan Lido's lead as the home side looked to make the perfect start to a new campaign.

However, Bridgend had the final word in spectacular fashion as Parkin struck a stunning free-kick beyond the reach of Afan Lido keeper Wyn Walters in the 73rd minute.

Drewe Phillips, Bridgend manager, said: "It is always difficult at Afan Lido who have a good pedigree. We showed a lot of character to come back twice but we probably had enough chances to have won the game."

Pictured (above) from left to right: The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Anthony Taylor ceremoniously kicks-off the new season accompanied by Bridgend Town captain, Ryan Barry; and Afan Lido captain, Andy Pearson.

The game was a special occasion for the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Anthony Taylor who was accompanied by his wife Annette, the Mayoress. Mr. Howells explained: "Anthony is a life-long supporter of the club. After our achievements last season, reaching the Welsh Cup final and winning the Shamrock Cup, we were invited to the Mayor's parlour. We presented him with a season ticket because we knew this club means so much to him. We approached the council to ask if he could kick-off our new season, an invitation he accepted."

Afan Lido (4-4-2): Wyn Walters; Carl Edwards, Carl Evans, Luke Harrington, Dan Williams; Steve Davies, Matt Lavis (Carl Payne 77 minutes), Damon Thomas, Karl Lewis; Mark Jones, Andy Pearson (Wright, 77 minutes). Substitutes (not used): Paul Evans, Corey Thomas, Brian Thomas.

Bridgend Town (4-4-2): Brendan Cropley; Geraint Frowen, Ryan Barry, Scott Hillman, Kirk Huggins (Paul Carro, 55 minutes); Gethin Jones, David Truan, Mike Parkin, Kristian Hanbury; Tom Billings, Raith Plant (Chris Vardon, 55 minutes). Substitutes (not used): Mike Hartley, Rhys Jones.

Referee: Kevin Russell (Cardiff).

FOUR GWENT SIDES CHASING PROMOTION

11 August 2007

South Wales Argus

THE MacWhirter League season kicks off today with four Gwent teams going head-to-head in Division One.

Caerleon, who finished mid-table last season, have enjoyed a good run in pre-season games, winning two, losing one and holding Blue Square Conference South’s Bath City to a draw at home.

They kick off the season with a home game against Bryntirion Athletic.

They will be boosted by having top striker Chris Pearce ready to start a new campaign - a drugs ban ruled him out for much of last season - and the signing of goalkeeper John Chorley from Garw.

Chairman Dave Griffiths said: “Our goal this season is to finish in the top six and what was missing from last season was that consistency to turn draws into wins.

“We’ve got a good side on paper and real strength in depth.”

Croesyceiliog are hoping to put their pre-season blues behind them when they travel to Dinas Powys this afternoon.

They lost to Tredegar, Abertillery, Chepstow and Swansea's West End in friendly matches.

Croesyceiliog will be without Gareth Pattimore who is suspended and keeper Patrick O’Hagan who is having recurring problems with his leg after breaking it last season.

The club has lost central midfielder Dale Edwards to last year’s champions Neath Athletic.

Joint manager Chris Evans said: “We’ve had a poor time of it pre-season so I’m keeping a low profile! But the last time we lost all our pre-season games, we went through the season unbeaten back in 2004-05.”

The club have signed Llanelli centre back Danny Clare, although he is unlikely to be able to play today.

Newport YMCA face a tough trip to Ton Pentre and will be hoping to put their 1-0 midweek Gwent Senior Cup away defeat to newly promoted Caldicot Town behind them.

As if that defeat wasn’t bad enough, red cards shown to skipper John Pardue and Steve Edwards mean they miss today’s game.

Manager Mark Coldrick said: “We’re looking for a top half finish.

Last season we were involved in a relegation battle and it’s not a nice feeling to play when your confidence is rock bottom.”

They have good reason to be optimistic with the return of centre forward Chris Egitto and centre Craig James, both coming back from long-term injuries.

YMCA have also signed Newport Civil Service right back Dan Chamberlain.

Relegated from the Welsh Premier League last season, Cwmbran Town are hoping to bounce straight back to the big time.

They take the first step on that road when they travel to Taffs Well today.

With former La Liga midfielder Guillermo Ganet, who played for Valencia, in command, the Crows are confident the Spaniard can re-create the glory days at Cwmbran Stadium.

New players have been brought in with only left back Gareth Mouncher and striker Martin Houston remaining from last season’s squad.

Secretary Ian Greaney said: “Guillermo’s brought in some experienced players and we are very optimistic we can return to the Welsh Premier League.”

Caldicot Town sit out today’s matches. They kick off their season when they entertain Croesyceiliog in Wednesday’s Gwent derby.

In Divison Two, last year’s Division Three champions Cwmbran Celtic travel to Briton Ferry, while promoted Llanwern host West End.

Tredegar Town have a home game against Ammanford.

In Division Three Monmouth Town travel to Llansawel, Abertillery Excelsiors are at Llantwit Fadre and Goytre head west to Morriston Town.

Risca United are the only side not on the road as they entertain Ystradgynlais.

DRAGONS LOOKING TO BREATHE FIRE INTO NEW SEASON

10 August 2007

by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo

BARRY Town are looking good for the start of the new MacWhirter Welsh League season.

The Dragons have transformed the Jenner Park bar and lounge with a makeover to attract new customers, particularly during and after matches, and they have new manager Gavin Chesterfield in charge.

Cardiff-based Chesterfield, who is head of sports coaching and Academy football coach at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire, sends his Barry team out to face Garden Village at Jenner Park tomorrow (2.30pm).

Barry were relegated last season and lost 5-0 in a pre-season match against Merthyr Tydfil in midweek, but showed enough to suggest they have the ability to mount a promotion challenge.

Zak Misbah went on as a late second half substitute against Merthyr as he nurses a swollen knee, but looks certain to start against Village.

Barry have also signed Jamie Bradford, who was with Merthyr and Ton Pentre during last season.

Welsh league First Division football starts tonight when Afan Lido play Bridgend Town at home (7.30pm).

Bridgend manager Drewe Phillips has signed Josh Collins, Michael Parkin and Kristian Hanbury from Cwmbran Town, Brendan Cropley from Uwic, Geraint Frowen of Pontypridd Town, Tom Billings from Haverfordwest County and Dinas Powys player Paul Carro.

Phillips has also re-signed Jason Davies, Drew Fahiya, Mike Hartley, Scott Hillman, Kirk Huggins, Gethin Jones and Raith Plant.

Former Cardiff City full-back Simon Heal has made the move to Weston-super-Mare.

Winger Leon Jeanne has signed for Ton Pentre, who are at home to Newport YMCA tomorrow.

The future of Maesteg Park remains in the the balance, but Park have been given permission to start their season late, on Saturday, August 25.

Don’t miss the first Welsh Football page of the new season in tomorrow’s South Wales Echo.

NEW SIGNINGS LOOK TO GET LIDO'S SEASON OFF TO A WINNING START ON HOME SOIL

10 August 2007

Tony Poole, South Wales Evening Post

Afan Lido launch the new season at home to Bridgend Town in division one tonight (7.30pm).Although the Seasiders have lost the top scorer Ian Jones, Liam McCreesh and Craig Jones, joint-managers Phil Holmes and Paul Evans have brought in Darren Bodenham, Steve Davies, Kieron Howells, Andrew Pearson, Wyn Walters and Andrew Wright.

Last season's runners-up Goytre United travel to
Pontypridd Town tomorrow, and are likely to include only one new player - ex-Maesteg Park and Gwynfi midfielder Steve Conaty.

Pontardawe Town, under the new management team of Marc Otten and Neil Fredrickson, travel to newly promoted Cambrian & Clydach with new signings Jamie Morris and Dave Thomas (both Garw) together with Jonny Martin and Mark Baker (both Morriston) and Dale Otten. Ex-Llanelli striker Ryan Fahey is back from long-term injury while young Craig Stringer has impressed in training.

Garw, who have lost player-manager Chris Wells and their entire squad, take a young side to ENTO Aberaman.

In the second division,
Garden Village parade ex-Reds trio Jeff Aspell, Gavin Guy, and Anthony Wright along with Liam Soroka against Barry Town at Jenner Park.

West End
travel to last year's third-division champions Llanwern with former Swansea City striker Jonathan Keaveny from Neath Athletic.

Much-travelled striker Stephen Williams is on board from Cwmamman United, as is his brother Chris along with Dan Joseph (Winch Wen), Jonny Jones (Cwmamman United) and Wayne Saunders (North End), but Wayne Jones has switched to Penlan.

Briton Ferry have also recruited well and some of the newcomers will face Cwmbran Celtic at
Old Road. Manager Neil Morgan has snapped up five players from Corus Steel - Michael Davies, Leon Dennis, Jon Parry, Steffan Rogers and Rob Webb - while ex-Pontardawe front man Chris Gardiner has signed from Seven Sisters. Ross Morgan has recovered from long-term injury with the only loss suffered via striker Keith Phillips joining Llansawel.

New Ammanford manager Huw Preece takes his side to
Tredegar Town. With Huw Preece and Anthony Rees remaining as his assistants, Preece hopes new skipper Cerison Davies (Llandeilo) and Terrence Wardwill boost their cause.

Barrie Colwill has taken over as manager at third-division Llansawel and seven Neath second team players have followed him - Paul Bailey, Paul Carpenter, Craig Evans, Mark Hanford, Gareth Jones, Craig Richards and Gareth Vaughan. Keith Phillips has arrived from Briton Ferry, and some of these players will feature in their opener at home to league newcomers
Monmouth Town.

However, Paul Lewis resigned as manager of
Morriston Town ahead of the home game with Goytre FC and they are hoping Neath Athletic Youth manager David Evans will replace him.

New-signing Paul Sweeny (Morriston) will miss Cwmamman United's derby with Seven Sisters at
Grenig Park with a groin strain while assistant manager Dean Beniamous, Mark Carlyle and Carl James are also injured.

Seven Sisters have lost Chris Gardiner to Briton Ferry while Chris Herdman has been persuaded to have another season.

Ystradgynlais head for Risca United with Nicky Maggs available along with Paul Kelly.

Cwmbran Celtic completed their friendly programme with a fine 4-1 win against First Division newcomers Cambrian & Clydach. Whilst not too much importance can be given to results in friendly games, this was, nevertheless, an excellent performance against strong opponents.

Celtic completely dominated the first half and surprised their opponents with their work rate and pace. They took the lead after 15 minutes with a fine goal from Shane Williamson and increased the lead on the half hour when Williamson scored again after some fine work by Joey Carless.

Carless himself then converted a penalty right on the stroke of half time after he had been brought down inside the box.

The second half was more even and goalkeeper, Nicky Church, was called upon to make a couple of good saves. Celtic went further into the lead after 60 minutes when Sammy Winter scored from close range after the Cambrian goalkeeper failed to hold on to a powerful free kick from Shane Williamson. Cambrian scored a consolation goal a few minutes from the end.

There were some excellent performances from the Celtic squad and newcomers Ryan Hillier and Ben Evans certainly staked their claims for a starting spot next week. Youngsters, Simon Prangley, Owen Llewellyn and Lee Newman also impressed when they were given a taste of football at this level late on.

Management team Micky Copeman and Della Cheedy will have a strong squad available to them and there is a confidence about the team that augurs well for the new season.

In other friendlies, Celtic beat South Wales Senior League newcomers, Llanbradach 3-0 and drew 1-1 with Welsh League First Division neighbours, Newport YMCA.

Caerleon 1 – 1 Bath City

Pre-season friendly

CAERLEON’S MacWhirter Welsh League Division One preparations continued on a positive note with a 1-1 home draw against newly-promoted Blue Square Premier outfit Bath City, writes Terry Daley.

Manager Brendan Dowd paraded several new signings including much-travelled central defender Jason Price, who last season won a Welsh League Division Three championship medal with Cwmbran Celtic.

Price, though, was powerless to prevent striker Mark McGiever from putting the visitors ahead on 20 minutes with a low shot past goalkeeper Richard Lancaster.

However it didn’t take Caerleon too long to draw level as forward Luke Cueto skilfully headed home Simon Trueman’s deft chip into the danger area.

Both sides went close to grabbing a winner, substitute goalkeeper Danny Bradfield making a fine save to deny Bath, managed by former Newport County defender and Newport AFC boss John Relish, before Jamie Sherry nearly clinched victory for the home side but saw his effort go narrowly wide.

Caerleon, who previously defeated Spar Mid Wales League outfit Presteigne 2-1 and Bath ’s under-19 side 3-2, wrap up their pre-season programme by hosting Cadbury Heath at Cold Bath Road on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.

ELY RANGERS GETTING ON BOARD WITH CAPITOL TRUCKS

25 July 2007

ELY Rangers, from the MacWhirter Welsh Football League, are joining forces with the Capitol Trucks junior section.

Talks have been held over the last couple of years about the seniors and juniors combining and they will be together for 2007-08.

Ely Rangers have been looking to form a junior section and club secretary Bob Fry said: “It’s perfect that we are able to combine with the Capitol Trucks club.

“They were looking for ways to enable their under-16 players to stay together and we found the solution.”

The juniors played under the title Ely Rangers Colts last season and will now simply be Ely Rangers, playing in the Cardiff and District League.

Ely will run teams from under-eight minis to under-16 in the boys’ league plus a girls’ team.

Rangers will field 14 teams in total, including the Welsh League Division Two side, managed by Wayne Matthews, and the reserves.

All teams play in the club’s blue and black stripes, black shorts and black socks.

Ely Rangers own their Station Road, Wenvoe ground, sitting between the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff.

Current chairman Graham Clark bought the ground in the late 1970s and it has been updated from a market garden into a stadium with a stand, dressing rooms and clubhouse.

“We need to move forward and improve,” said Fry. “We need floodlights if we are to play at a higher level.

“Then we are also planning new dressing rooms, a medical room and covered seating.

“In stage three we are keen to enlarge the clubhouse both for members and supporters. What we really need are sponsors and partners to help us.”

It was Clark who started Ely Rangers in 1963. He was playing for Ely YMCA and they did not have enough players.

He moved to Heath Park Rangers and then decided to form Ely Rangers. The club joined the Cardiff Combination and quickly made progress.

They achieved Welsh League status after winning the South Wales Amateur League in 1997.

They spent three seasons in Division Three, finishing fifth twice before being promoted as runners-up and going straight on to Division One after finishing third.

“We have loyalty and a good club spirit said Fry “That’s what keeps us going.”

Capitol Truck Colts were formed in 1995 and the club grew formed in to their current 200 members aged between six and 16.

The Ely Rangers junior committee will be chairperson Mark Richards, secretary Debbie Griffiths and Treasurer Simon Azzopardi.

The club will run 12 teams and the managers are: Peter Fordham (under-eight, David Pugh (under-nine), Clint Ridout (under-10), Peter Edwards (under-11), Angie Milic (under-11 girls), Paul Cleverdon (under-12), David Griffiths(under-13) Lloyd Mayer (under-14A), Alan Lane (under-14B), Mark Owens (under-14C), Paul Francombe (under-15), Greg Wilcox (under-16A) and Roy Champion (under-16B).

Ely Rangers are seeking sponsorship at all levels and Bob Fry can be contacted on 029 2056 6762.

GARW MANAGER DEPARTS

"Garw SBGC announce today that their player/manager, Chris Wells, who has been a tremendous asset to the Club for the past two years, has resigned from his post with immediate effect.

“Garw Chairman Michael Lambert said "Chris has resigned in order to move abroad for work. He has been very successful here and of course we are very shocked and saddened at his departure, but he is a young man who needs to further his career. He has found an excellent position in the Caribbean and so, regretfully, he must leave the Club. He leaves with the very best wishes and the sincere thanks of everyone connected with the Club.

"Garw have been forced to cancel several pre-season friendly fixtures while we re-organise, but the bulk of last years' squad have agreed to re-sign for the Club and two of our former players, Paul Samuel and Kevin Day, will manage the side in the interim until a manager can be appointed. We will be fielding a side for our first match at Aberaman on August 11th and are confident that this young side will give a good account of themselves, despite the obvious blow of Chris' departure.

"Individuals who might be interested in the manager's position should contact me on 01656 872 032 or michael@garwafc.co.uk"

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Neil Workman, long-serving Pontyclun officials, was honoured at the MacWhirter Welsh League annual meeting which was staged at Maesteg Park football club on Saturday afternoon, writes Ray Parker.

He received a league merit award from President Tommy Forse who was re-elected unopposed to the position.

Ken Tucker, league secretary, said that Mr Workman was "one of the finest administrators we have. He is first class. He has been with the club for more than 20 years and these people are the salt of the earth to clubs at our level of football."

After receiving the award, Mr. Workman said: "This has come as a complete
and unexpected surprise and I thank my club for thinking me worthy of the award. It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be a member of a club in this league. I will treasure this award."

The one-player-one-club ruling, controversially operated by some leagues in
Wales last season, will be implemented this season. Mr Tucker said: "This season we are led by Fifa and the FAW. This is a Fifa ruling which we must go along with. We have discussed it but can do little about it - it is a fait accompli."

In his annual report, Mr. Tucker said: This is one of the most radical changes for many years and club secretaries will need to be extra vigilant  I am sure we will get through the important transition period if the club secretaries and the league work together."

Alan Watkins, a former chairman, and management committee member for 19 years, lost his seat.

Mr. Watkins, the Llanwern secretary, was also a member of the league's ground inspection team.

Michael Lambert, seeking a seat for the first time, was elected. Mr. Lambert, unable to attend the meeting because he was best man at a wedding, is with Garw who gained promotion to the top flight last season.

David Owens, the West End secretary, failed to gain election, looking to gain a seat for the first time.

Treasurer Kieran O'Connor reported a profit on the year of £6,622 - although a reduction of £1,724 on the previous season. He said: We are in a healthy state and continue to progress as a result of continue sponsorship."

Receipts totalled £43,895, a slight reduction on the previous season while expenditure rose to £37,273, up by £1,300. Income dropped partly because clubs showed an improvement, fines dropping by £1,229 to a total of £4,075.

Clubs agreed to a management committee proposal to increase the number of named substitutes from three to five - but teams can still only use three.

They will be numbered from 1-17, leaving out 13. But that didn't meet with full approval.

Don James, long-serving Taffs Well official, asked: "Why in this day and age
exclude 13?"

Mr. Tucker, bringing light-hearted banter to the proceedings,  responded: "It is regarded as unlucky by all accounts."

"Mr. James wasn't happy and added: "It seems rather odd that we do not use 13. There is no possible reason why we should not use 13."

And four other delegates agreed with him but the proposal was carried.

Disappearing from the rule book is the speedy registration, described by Mr. Tucker as the secretaries "favourite toy - a rule we have all loved."

Clubs could register players on the day of the match but now they must be registered or transferred by 5.00pm on the day prior to a fixture.

Fees for match officials have risen by one pound with referees in Division One now receiving £25, three pounds less in Division Two and £21 in Division Three.

League newcomers Monmouth Town, promoted from the Welsh Autoparts Gwent County League, have been drawn at home to Ely Rangers, relegated to the Second Division last season, in the first round of the league cup, the league seeking new sponsors.

Cwmaman Institute, also promoted into the league, have not been so fortunate. Not only must they travel but they face First Division Goytre United who were beaten in the final by Afan Lido last season.

The Lido have been drawn away to Caerleon, ties to be played on September 22.

Monmouth's opening fixture on August 11 is away to Llansawel who were elected to the league last season. Monmouth, because they share cricket facilities, play away until September 1 when they entertain Risca.

Cwmaman Institute's opening game on August 11 is at home to Merthyr Saints.

The league season will get underway on August 11 and close on May 10.

RISCA UNITED PRE-SEASON TRAINING & FRIENDLIES

Risca United begin pre-season training at Ty-Isaf Park on Tuesday 10th July 2007 at 6.30 pm. Training will be every Tuesday and Thursday from then on.

For the past few Saturdays many players have turned up at the ground and have enjoyed the get-togethers but now the training starts in earnest. All present and new players are welcome to come along, Manager Jeff Eckhardt and his assistant Matthew Long are always looking to improve the side and will give every player a warm welcome and a fair chance.

No management changes at Risca have been made. Ex-Sheffield United/Fulham/Stockport County and Cardiff City professional Jeff Eckhardt is the Manager ably assisted by local goalkeeping stalwart Matthew Long.

They are backed by ex-Risca players, Simon Woodsford and Mark Powell who look after the Reserve side who assist with the Training/Coaching. The under 19`s Youth side will once again be looked after by Jonathan Smith (Crosskeys College Football Academy Coach) and  young ex-Risca player Paul Michael who played last season at Taffs Well.

The club have arranged friendlies with Croesyceiliog (25th July - Away), Treharris Athletic (31st July - Away) and are in the process of arranging other games.

Any club (other than Division Three MacWhirter Welsh League) looking for friendlies please note that Risca United have the following dates available:  Sat 21st July (Away only), Sat 28th (Away only), Sat 4th Aug (Home or Away) and Tue 7th Aug (Home or Away).

NEW SIGNINGS FOR THE CUCKOOS

The big news is that "Gayo" is back. Risca born Striker Andy Gay who has divided his playing career between the Cuckoos and Caerleon has signed for his home town club and is looking sharp in pre-season training. The usual bet on his goal scoring will be offered by Chairman Stuart Luckwell!

Assistant Manager Matthew Long is delighted with Andy`s commitment to his home town club and hopes that it will now encourage a few other talented home grown players to return home to Ty-Isaf. A couple of them have been training with us recently including, Jamie Maher and younger brother Chris Maher.

Jeff Eckhardt and Matthew Long hope to sign both players in the next few days. Another new player who has been training and has declared his interest in signing is goalkeeper Ryan Mackerness. Twenty-six year-old Ryan was with Newport County, he has played previously for Caldicot Town, Caerleon and Goytre FC and is a qualified Goalkeeping Coach and as with Andy Gay and the Maher brothers will be valuable assets to the club. Matthew Long is now hoping that another ex-Cuckoo Rhys Griffiths gets the home-sickness bug.

Meanwhile Jeff Eckhardt has confirmed that ex-Cardiff City mid-fielder Nathan Wigg will be once again be signing and hopes that "Wiggy" can stay clear of injuries which limited his appearances last season to just a handful.

TERRY VENABLES FOR CAMBRIAN

As many people already know Terry is currently President of the Club's community arm, The Cambrian Village Trust.

The Club’s Commercial Manager, Phil Williams, said "The Club is absolutely delighted that Terry has shown his commitment to the Club and Clydach Vale in general."

“We are a progressive Club, which has gained successive promotions since arriving in the MacWhirter Welsh League two years ago, and will compete in the MacWhirter Welsh League's top Division next season.”

60TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER – TAFF’S WELL AFC

Pictured: Frank Terrell (Acting Chairman); Joey Jones (Guest Speaker) and Keith Cooper (Master of Ceremonies).

On the evening of Saturday 23 June 2007 the Quality Hotel, Tongwynlais very graciously co-sponsored and hosted Taff’s Well Football Club’s 60th Anniversary Dinner.

Acting Chairman, Frank Terrell, welcomed more than 150 guests to the evening’s entertainment.  Apart from a cross section of players, both past and present, the club was delighted to host sponsors who have developed a very supportive relationship with Taff’s Well over a number of years including: CMB Engineering, LDS, Lovell’s Partnerships, Thomas Carroll Ltd., and Hennessey Plumbing Services.

Sports Locker UK Ltd., The Quality Hotel, Zenith Media and Treforest Printing Limited sponsored the programme.

Notable guests included long serving President of the South Wales Amateur League, Mr John Owen; Welsh League Chairman, Mr Bob Fry; Mr Arnie Gibson of MacWhirter, the main sponsors of the Welsh League; and Mr Tony Griffiths, the Welsh League’s Fixtures Secretary.

Frank Terrell, in his speech of welcome, was able to outline the club’s origins and list some of its achievements in its 60 years.  One notable person present, Mr John Morley, had also been at the club’s founding and is a distinguished former star inside forward and captain.

Also present, but very much at the other end of the age range was Zak Moore, club mascot and son of First Team Manager, Adam.  The most eagerly awaited award of the evening was Zak’s Player of the Season decided by the eight year-old from his scores out of ten for every player in every match of 2006/2007: the winner was Callum McKenzie.

Other award recipients were First Team Player of the Season: Paul Michael; Second Team Player: Gareth Davies; Over 40s Player: Cohen Griffith; Over 45s Player: Eifion Thomas.

Former Premier League and international referee, Mr Keith Cooper, who compered the evening’s main entertainment, introduced former Liverpool and Wales star, Joey Jones, as after dinner speaker.  Mr Cooper made sure everyone had a good time and Joey Jones proved to be every bit as good an after dinner speaker as he had been a tough-tackling defender.  He left the audience wanting still more hilarious stories of his experiences both before and during his time in top flight football.

The club would like to thank all those who attended for their support and, in particular, those who either donated or ended up buying the sporting memorabilia auctioned during a very successful evening.

Frank Terrell

PONTYPRIDD TOWN REQUIRE A TEAM MANAGER

Pontypridd Town have accepted with regret the resignation of team manager Ryan Nicholls.

Club Development Officer Ceri James stated that "Ryan originally volunteered his services as unpaid coach to the Club's reserve team and we would like to thank him for his services and for the professionalism and organisation he has introduced during his two and a half years in charge. These qualities have brought us the Welsh League second division championship and a third place finish in the first division last season. Unfortunately, the current uncertainty over the Club's budget for the 2007/8 season has meant that Ryan has been unable to press ahead with his proposals for team building and we respect his decision to resign at this stage".

Consequently, the Club now require a new team manager and persons interested should contact Ceri James on 01443 493438 or Ty Olding on 01443 665137.

Further details on the club can be obtained from the website at www.pontypriddtownafc.org.uk

CELEBRATION EVENING

10 June 2007

Neath Athletic, the MacWhirter Welsh League champions, will be playing in the Welsh Premier League and  they celebrated a late surprise double at the league's presentation evening at the Aberavon Beach Hotel, Port Talbot, on Friday evening writes Ray Parker.

Their management team of Andrew Dyer (manager), assistant Raymond Pennock and coach Simon Dyer, finished the season in storming style.

The monthly winners were announced on the night - the surprise packet of a very successful evening.

Neath ended the race for the First Division crown in splendid fashion, lifting the March award with four wins, scoring 14 goals and conceding two.

But April and May proved even better with eight wins and a draw, enabling them to finished 12 points clear of second-place Goytre and hit the one hundred mark for goals scored.

The other monthly winners were: August, Llanwern, five wins, goals for 16, against four; September, Pentwyn Dynamo, 3-12-2; October, ENTO Aberaman Athletic 3-7-2; November, Pentwyn Dynamo, 3-14-1; December, Pontypridd, 4-18-4; January, Garw, 3-13-1.

In February, Garw and Cardiff Corries both had three wins and the same goal difference, Garw 6-0 and the Corries 9-3, the league management committee making the award to Corries for the highest number of goals scored.

Peter Rees, Football Association of Wales president, responding on behalf of the guests, to Bob Fry, MacWhirter Welsh League chairman, said that Welsh football owed a tremendous debt to the Welsh League. He said: "Without our clubs and officials there would not have been a League of Wales. A lot of people laughed when we talked of our clubs in Europe. Last season we had five competing (including the Cardiff women's team).

"We lost ten clubs when the league was formed and people thought it would be the death of this league but it goes from strength to strength with our reserve and youth divisions. No other league in Wales can compare with that and it is the only one with Royal patronage."

Mr Fry had a special welcome for the league's sponsors MacWhirter who were represented by Arnie Gibson (company accountant) and Steve Davies (financial director). He said: "Without them it would be a more expensive game."

The league's annual meeting will be held at the Maesteg Park club on July 7.

GIROLAMI RETURNS

10 June 2007

Adriano Girolami, who played Welsh League football with Llanwern, Caerleon and Caldicot, had an unforgettable season with central Wales club Presteigne St Andrews, writes Ray Parker.

They were crowned Spar Mid Wales League kings and Girolami collected two individual honours, named manager of the season and voted player of the season but the clubs.

Girolami, who will lead the Saints next season, said: "I don't want to shout about it too much but I was very pleased to win the managerial award and to get the player award - voted for by all the other clubs - was a bonus."

Girolami, football in the community officer with League Two club Hereford United, now plays in the sweeper role, switching from midfield. His career began with Oxford United where at the time Steve McClaren, now the England Head coach, was youth and reserve coach. Girolami, who was also capped by Wales at Under-18 level, said: "He also released me!"

Girolami, who also had a spell at Barry under Andrew Beattie, the former Wales non-League manager, who twice won the four-nations crown with John Relish who has guided Bath City into the Blue Square South, is bringing his successful side 'back home' for pre-season friendlies against Newport YMCA (July 21) and Caerleon seven days later.

The YMCA have also arranged a home friendly with Lydbrook on July 28 and Broadwell, away, on August 4.

Llanwern have new pre-season opponents in Tytherington Rocks who finished fifth in the Hellenic League, Division One (West). Llanwern travel over the bridge on August 4 for the game. Llanwern go to Ellwood on July 21, Broadwell a week later and Undy on August 1.

THINGS MAY NEVER BE THE SAME FOR CWMBRAN TOWN

6 June 2007

THINGS may never be the same for Cwmbran Town - well not while hugely enthusiastic Spaniard Guillermo Ganet remains in charge of first-team affairs, writes Terry Daley.

The former Valencia midfielder has gathered much experience in a football highway which has taken him from the super-rich La Liga to Division One of the MacWhirter Welsh League – where some truly amateur clubs still ask players to pay them to perform!

Clubs with such diversity as Watford, Berkhamstead Town, where he was both manager and chairman, Welwyn Garden City and Kettering Town have all benefited from the Ganet way.

Now it’s the turn of the Crows, relegated from the Welsh Premier League last season: “The club and I were in discussion in February and March and I went along to Cwmbran Stadium to watch the team play,” revealed Gant.

“But the move never went through because it wasn’t convenient for me at that time.

But as a football manager, it’s a great challenge for me to take on and I’m delighted to be here.”

Ganet lives in Spain, but has a base in London an also said he would be acquiring a property in Cwmbran.

“I’m looking for a top-three finish and intend to bring in players I know from outside the South Wales area as well as looking at ones from around here.

“I have a non-profitable football academy in London and have a supply of African players attending it.

“There are some good players there, but they don’t have the contacts to get themselves fixed up with clubs.

“But even when they do join a club, it’s difficult for them because the manager says ‘who are you.’”

Cwmbran have placed averts seeking a locally-based qualified coach to stand next to Ganet “Yes, I’m trying to find a suitable person,” he confirmed. “I would like that person to be local and someone who is used to dealing in the transfer market in this region.”

Although they may only be on promotion from getting back into the top tier of Welsh domestic football, history shows that only Afan Lido and Llanelli are the only two South Wales-based clubs ever to have regain WPL status following relegation – and even both clubs went back down again.

So Ganet’s task is indeed a tough one – but it’s one he readily accepts: “I’m going to be fully focused 100 per cent on getting this club back into the Welsh Premier League and to win the Welsh up, which has entry into Europe.

“People now need to see something good coming out of this club because it’s over the past few years, that hasn’t been the case.”

Ganet hosted an open forum last Thursday when he revealed his plans for the future of the club.

The bottom line is - hold tight because in the weeks ahead, Cwmbran will reveal further surprise developments, both on and off the field.

Cwmbran are to return to training on June 19 and will play their first friendly on July against as yet un-named opponents.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES - MORRISTON TOWN FC

Morriston Town have already started planning for life in the MacWhirter Welsh League Division Three by announcing four pre-season friendlies.

With pre-season training kicking off at The Dingle on Saturday 30th June 2007, Manager Paul Lewis is demonstrating a positive response after the disappointment of last season's relegation from the MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two.

They kick off their pre-season campaign with a home game on Saturday 21st July 2007 against Nick Tucker's Division One outfit Dinas Powys. Although a division apart last season, the two teams met at Murch Field in the second round of the FAW Welsh Cup. It was a game that Dinas won 3-0, however they were made to work hard for the win as it was not as one- sided as the result seems.

The next friendly is again at home against newly promoted Division One outfit Garw Athletic on Tuesday 31st July (6:30pm). The last time the two clubs met was back in early May when a 1-1 draw at Blandy secured the league championship for Garw. On reflection Garw were lucky to come away with a point as a spirited second half performance saw us dominate the game in which we should have come away with all three points.

On Saturday 4th August we make the trip east to Sully Sports for a 2:30pm kick off. Sully who lost the play off to come into the Welsh League against Cwmaman Institute will be keen to prove that they have a strong squad and can compete against teams from the Welsh League. We are also planning to take our reserve team with us on the day to play against their reserve team.

Our last friendly is at home on Tuesday 7th August against another Division One outfit - Pontardawe Town. The club who are currently looking for a first team manager after the resignation last season of Dai Rees will be looking to take a boost of confidence from the game before their first league encounter which they look set to play four days later.

We will be looking to give a good account of ourselves against all four opponents and hopefully our squad will be boosted by new signings prior to the friendlies kicking off.

A full listing of the friendlies is listed below:-

PRESS RELEASE – FIRST TEAM MANAGER

Taff’s Well FC regrets to announce the resignation of the club’s First Team Manager, Mark Evans, who cited family and work commitments in prompting his decision.  He thanked the club for its support during his three seasons as part of the coaching team.

The club would like to express its gratitude to Mark for stepping in during the worst crisis in its sixty year existence in replacing departing manager, Nick Tucker, halting the exodus of players and behind-the-scenes personnel and ensuring First Division survival.  In the subsequent two years, he has built teams good enough to compete with the best in the division, on their day, although injury to key personnel has meant the consistency necessary to challenge for honours has eluded the players.  The club wish Mark, and his family, all the best for the future.

The club is, however, delighted to confirm that Mark Evans’s assistant manager, Adam Moore, has agreed to take on the responsibilities of his departing friend and colleague.  The much-respected former-club captain, Mark Hennessey, will assist him.

Her involvement in football started at an early age with her home town club Port Talbot Town and Kathryn strongly believes that her experience of the game together with her negotiating and sales skills will help her be a success at this new challenge.

I am sure all of you who are involved in Morriston Town Football Club will join me in wishing Kathryn all the best in her new role and will offer her any support or assistance necessary which will go towards the overall objective of the continued progression of Morriston Town Football Club.

Risca United 1 - 2 Cwmbran Celtic

Cwmbran Celtic were crowned Division Three champions with a dramatic last-game victory over Risca United in a hard but exhilarating game at Ty-Isaf Park, writes Ray Parker.

Celtic, in only their second Welsh League season, whipped the trophy away from watching Llanwern with two stunning late goals after Risca had taken the lead.

Following a goalless opening half, Celtic were reduced to ten men  when Kevin Payne was dismissed after finding the net, only to have it ruled out by Six Bells referee Mark Dyson. A bitterly disappointed Payne over-reacted and was shown a red card.

Both goalkeepers - Matthew Long of Risca and Celtic's Nicky Church - were outstanding in a game played for the most part in torrential rain in front of a fair-sized and extremely vocal crowd, adding to the tense occasion which produced such a thrilling climax.

Long, playing his first game for five months, made a string of excellent saves, his best to keep out a sizzling shot from Shane Williamson's free-kick.

Stuart Luckwell, Risca's secretary/chairman, visibly drained at the final whistle, said: "That was a tremendous save - the shot was really flying. I don't think we deserved to lose. A draw would have been a fair result.

Malcolm Jarrett, an exhausted but understandably elated Celtic secretary at the end, said: "They don't write scripts like that any more." In an astonishing change of fortunes, Sammy Winter equalised for Celtic and Ben Graham got a sensational winner, sending the Celtic bench into raptures of uncontrollable joy. And that all happened after skipper Brendan Scott had fired Risca into the lead.

Celtic ended the season in perfect style, gaining the title and extending their unbeaten league which began in mid-September after losing to Llanwern.

Jarrett added: "The victory was unbelievable. We knew we had gained promotion before the game but this was just the icing on the cake. This was our first league title. We've been runners-up over the years on a number of occasions in the Gwent County League and it's not only great for the lads but also for the club."

In their first season of Welsh League football, Celtic escaped a swift return to the County League by the skin of their teeth. Manager Mickey Copeman has achieved a remarkable turnaround.

Risca, despite suffering a bitter blow, ended the season with a good run - two defeats in 11 games and both to Celtic - and they could prove promotion contenders next season, but also keep a sharp eye on Llantwit Fardre who have had only one defeat in their last 15 matches.

It was something special for Celtic coach Del Cheedy to celebrate because he was previously the manager at Risca.

Merthyr Tydfil 2 - 1 Cardiff Celts

FAW Welsh Youth Cup Final

Merthyr Tydfil FC - FAW Welsh Youth Cup Winners, Season 2006-07

Merthyr Tydfil FC won the Welsh Youth Cup on Sunday afternoon after beating Cardiff Celts (Coleg Glan Hafran) in the final at Port Talbot .

The destination of the cup never looked in doubt as Merthyr came out all guns blazing on a sun baked afternoon.

Kalim Ali gave the Martyrs the lead in the eleventh minute with a superb turn and volley from 12 yards out. In the 23rd minute wing back Matthew Glassey drove a shot into the net from all of 30 yards to double the advantage.

The Celts managed to reduce the deficit with 11 minutes left in the game. A mistake on the near post allowed Mike Palmer to score directly from a corner. The scare didn’t upset Merthyr who held on to their lead to take the cup back up the valley.

Llanwern 2 - 1 AFC Porth

Two goals from prolific striker Steve Perszewski carried top team Llanwern another step closer to promotion from the MacWhirter Welsh League, Division Three, following their hard-earned home win over bottom side AFC Porth, writes Ray Parker.

But it was no easy passage for Llanwern who now have three games to wrap up the crown, beginning with a home game against Seven Sisters on Saturday.

For the Rhondda side, who played far better than a side battling to preserve their league status, they have games in hand to get out of trouble.

They also have a far better goal difference, minus eight, than all the clubs around them, and in the final shakedown that could prove crucial.

Laurence Owen, Llanwern manager, acknowledged Porth's quality. He said: "I thought they played well and I take my hat off to them. They are fighting for survival - but they didn't create chances in the second-half."

In contrast, Llanwern did carve out good scoring opportunities but looked determined to waste them all, until Perszewski, one of the main culprits, popped up with a close range far post header following Marcus Power's right-flank corner, headed on by Kristian Hanbury with six minutes remaining.

Porth, well organised, quick on the break and hard working in defence, gained the best possible start, taking the lead after two minutes, Chris Saunders heading home from Stuart Brock's cross. And shortly after the goal the confident Brock fired a first-time shot just over the bar.

Llanwern soon got back into the game, Power supplying a splendid pass for Perszewski to lob the advancing keeper, Ryan Betteneny and an entertaining first-half developed with Brock and recent arrival Christian Burge a lively pair but the visitors rode their luck as half-time approaching, John Noble clearing off the line from Perszewski and seconds later the same player missed another chance from  close range.

Hanbury failed to hit the target with a glancing header a minute before setting up Perszewski for his golden goal.

Llanwern (4-4-2): Chris Hart; Paul Tanner, Carl Baugh, Gregg Taylor, Denis Spiteri; Michael Vaux, Troy Quarterly, Richard Shier, Marcus Power; Steve Perszewski, Kristian Hanbury (Tony Shier, 86min). Substitutes (not used Ryan Corey, Richard Bingham.

AFC Porth (3-5-2): Ryan Betteneny; Chris Bowen, John Noble, Jonathan Lee; Ryan Matthews, Stuart Brock (Dale Snooks 76min), Ashley Burge, Chris Saunders, Robert Moore; Christian Burge, Mark Day. Substitutes (not used): Gareth Thomas, Aaron Hughes.

Referee: Mike Davies (Pontymister).

Thursday 12 April 2007

Garw 1 - 0 Bettws

A second-half goal from Jamie Morris settled the MacWhirter Welsh League, Division Two top clash in front of a good-sized crowd, making for a good atmosphere, writes Ray Parker.

The goal enabled Garw to extend their remarkable home record, not having dropped a point in 12 home league matches this season while Bettws' unbeaten run was halted, proving unlucky 13 for them. It was Bettws' first defeat since December 23 when  they were beaten at home by Ammanford.

There was little between the sides in a rather tame first-half. Richard Ready, for the visitors, had an on-target shot blocked, the ball going out for a corner and not long afterwards Tom Hopper had a good low shot held by Bettws keeper Mark Elliott. Close to the interval Hopper tried his luck again, turning and shooting from outside the penalty area, but this time his effort was well wide of the mark.

Early in the second-half Morris hit the crossbar as Garw, the leaders, began
to dominate the game, but it was not long before Morris grabbed the game's all important goal. Garw should have added a second following an excellent right to left move, Dave Truan setting up Tom Donald but Elliott produced a fine save.

Bettws launched a late rally but failed to piece together an attack to worry Garw keeper and captain John Chorley.

Garw: John Chorley; Tom Donald, Sam Bradburn, Lewis Williams, David Thomas, Chris Wells, Liam Williams, Dave Truan, Vincent Wattleworth, Jamie Morris, Ton Hopper. Substitutes: Michael Flanagan, Tudor Coates, Alex Coleman.

Bettws: Mark Elliott, Darren Robinson, Jason Bird, Marc Simmonds, Jonathan Wile, Robbie Hugglestone, Karl Miller, Richard Ready, Steve Amos, Richard Llewellyn, Craig Phillips. Substitutes: Scott Williams, Owen Atkinson, Craig Rees.

Referee: Geoff Martin (Bridgend).

Aberbargoed Buds 0 - 4 Llantwit Fardre

Llantwit Fardre, one defeat in their last ten matches, moved into fifth place with a deserved away win on Tuesday night, writes Ray Parker.

And they will be seeking a swift double, the teams meeting again on Saturday.

There was one goal between the two sides at the break but it was a different tale after the interval. In-form Llantwit Fardre soon took control and didn't look back.

The Buds, in front of a good-sized crowd, marginally shaded the early stages with Ross Mazurczak forcing a fine save out of Lee Rudall who turned away a strong low shot for a corner. However, the visitors forced three successive corners and then took the lead after 37 minutes when Alun Griffiths produced a stunning finish, the shot simply flying beyond a totally surprised Asa Kirkwood, the Buds keeper.

Buds' hopes of getting back into the game early in the second-half were dashed when Rhys Bowler demonstrated cool finishing in the 48th minute and eight minutes later Bowler tucked away a loose ball after Kirkwood kept out a Griffiths shot. In the 69th minute the home defence was split wide open when Bowler set up a gift for Ian Minton and Bowler then had a couple of chances to complete his hat-trick.

Aberbargoed Buds: Asa Kirkwood; Jason Brewer, Chris Griffiths, Anthony Lester, Ewen Aherne, Leon Young, Shane Brewer, Dean Randall, Ross Fowler, Tony Rees, Ross Mazurczak. Substitutes: Chris Jones, Gerwyn Jones, Steve Evans.

Llantwit Fardre: Lee Rudall, Lee Rees, Steve Morgan, Paul Atherton, Ryan Prosser, Rhys Bowler, Scott Rudall, Gareth Owen, Ian Minton, Greg Perrott, Alun Griffiths. Substitutes: David Jones, Dominic Lord, Matthew Howells.

Referee: Steve Williams (Pontypool).

Merthyr Tydfil 2 - 0 TNS

Merthyr Tydfil Under 19s traveled to Rhayader to face North Wales side The New Saints for the right to play Cardiff Celts in this season's Welsh Youth Cup Final on April 22nd. The game was played on a poor surface and the fact that TNS could only muster up two strikes at Lee Idzi’s goal showed the dominance Merthyr had on the fixture.

From the start the young Martyrs showed their intentions playing the game at a frantic pace. Merthyr centre forward Kalim Ali shot narrowly over the bar in the second minute, but the lad from Bute Town didn’t have to wait too long to get his afternoon off to a flying start.

In the eighth minute, Tarrant Watkins won a crucial 50/50 in the middle of the park, the ball fell to Craig Moses who drilled a powerful 30 yard strike directly at Jacob Northwood in the Saints goal. The ‘keeper, resplendent in pink, failed to hold the shot and Ali nipped in to chip the ball over the number one to open his account.

Two minutes later Merthyr nearly made it two as Matthew Harris curled a shot inches over the bar with the outside of his right foot. Merthyr kept on applying the pressure as Craig James, Harris and Jordan Coles put a strangle hold on possession in the middle of the park. Ali again went close after he ghosted in at the back post to drill a shot at goal from a Matthew Glassey corner. The ball somehow cannoned off two players and away to safety.

On a bobbly surface Jon Owen gave Idzi his only problem of the afternoon. His under hit pass forced Idzi into a fine block at point blank range from Craig Whitfield. Other than that Owen, Scott Reynolds and Ross Porter ensured they all enjoyed an Easter Sunday in the Mid Wales sunshine.

On the half hour mark Watkins delivered an inch perfect right wing cross to the back post. The athletic Ali rose highest and drilled his header into the back of the net to double the lead.

Merthyr's Kalim Ali, right, outpaces the TNS defence

The second half started with TNS on the attack and Idzi had to be alert with a fine save low to his left, but from that point on Merthyr should have extended their lead after creating countless chances. Craig Moses took a long throw from Harris and his turn and volley was only inches over the bar. Marcus Griffiths replaced Harris in the middle of the park and his first act was to drill another vicious shot at Northwood. Again the ‘keeper spilled the ball and again Ali found the back of the net. This time linesman Paul Fisher adjudged the striker to have been in an offside position.

With time running out Merthyr started to enjoy themselves and shots rained in on the TNS goal. Griffiths again let rip and his thunderous 30 yard strike hit the far post. With Northwood stranded substitute Neil Leeson had too much time to finish off the chance and blazed his shot over the bar from 12 yards.

Llanwern 5 - 0 Porthcawl Town

Striker Steve Perszewski scored a hat-trick to keep Llanwern firmly on the promotion road from Division Three of the MacWhirter Welsh League following their five-goal demolition of Porthcawl at Spytty Park, writes Ray Parker.

Llanwern hold a three-point lead over Pentwyn Dynamo with a game in hand, entertaining the Cardiff side next Wednesday.

Third place Llangeinor won 2-0 at Goytre and have games in hand over the top two teams.

Llanwern suffered an early blow with the loss of central defender Michael Binning with a calf muscle injury , but it gave new signing Rhys Redman the opportunity to show his value to the side. Redman, the former Risca player, was previously with First Division UWIC. He made an impressive first appearance.

Llanwern carved out plenty of early chances and it came as a relief when Matthew Currie scored direct from a free-kick after 18 minutes. Then Perszewski, after earlier missing opportunities, took centre stage with his three goals and Richard Shier converted a late penalty after Perszewski had been brought down by goalkeeper Thomas Owen.

Michael Vaux was close to improving Llanwern's goal difference when he latched on to an excellent defence-splitting pass from Shier but his celebrations were cut short, the effort striking an upright and bouncing to safety.

The only disappointing aspect of Llanwern's good performance was that theydid not score more goals.

Porthcawl's Matthew Owen hit a post from the penalty spot and they finished the game with ten men, substitute James Boyd dismissed for using abusive language at referee Mark Dyson from Abertillery.

Laurence Owen, Llanwern manager, said: "It was another good performance but I was well pleased with our substitutes, Rhys coming into the game early on because he will start against Pentwyn next week - a key game. Michael (Binning) is on holiday while Carl Baugh is still suffering with a back injury."

Caldicot, bidding for promotion from Division Two, were held to a goalless draw at Pontyclun.

Newport YMCA 1 - 1 Afan Lido

Aaron Stewart moved into double figures when he scored Newport YMCA's deserved equalising goal against Afan Lido in the MacWhirter Welsh League, Division One, at Mendalgief Road, writes Ray Parker.

Stewart, with his tenth league goal, levelled the scores after 36 minutes, Welsh Cup finalists Afan Lido having taken the lead after 14 minutes through Chris Piper in an opening half packed with scoring chances.

Stewart, bugged by injury, has scored three goals in the last two games which have brought the YM four valuable points, keeping their noses out of the relegation dog-fight. He has netted seven times in his side's last eight league and cup games, but still  has some way to go if he is to catch leading scorer Lewis Sommers who is on 16.

The scoring opportunities came thick and fast in a hectic and at times tough first half. Afan Lido keeper Brian Thomas made a stunning save from John Pardue in between two on-target headers from central defender Danny Heath which were blocked by a well organised defence. Phillips was kept busy as YM piled on the pressure, tipping away a clever Stewart effort from the left and then repeated the feat on the stroke of half-time, again from the same player.

Kieron Blackburn, making his YM debut in goal, produced his best save of the game to deny Liam McCreesh, who set up his side's goal, the chance to restore the visitors advantage.

Mark Coldrick, YM manager, said: "I think we did enough in the first-half to sneak the game. But having gone a goal down to come back and get a draw was well deserved.

"The second-half was a little bit scrappy and not as good as the first, but we were happy with the point after the three we gained on Saturday."

Newport YMCA: Kieron Blackburn; Leon Spargo, Louis Walsh, Robbie Painter, Daniel Heath, Gareth Lynch, Aaron Stewart, Steve Edwards, Lewis Sommers, John Pardue, Danny Cueto. Substitutes: Faris Yafai, Alex Stewart, Alex Jenkins.

Afan Lido: Brian Thomas, Craig Jones, Steve Parry, Karl Roberts, Phil Holmes, Craig Martin, Liam McCreesh, Chris Latham, Ian Jones, Chris Piper, Greg Hurley. Substitutes: Paul Evans, Matt Lavis, Carl Elward.

Referee: Allen Griffiths (Cilfynydd).

FINAL HERE WE COME

FAW Welsh Cup Semi-final

Afan Lido 1 - 1 Welshpool

After extra time (90 minutes 1-1).  Afan Lido won 7-6 on penalties.

At Park Avenue, Aberystwyth Town FC

Well we made it to the Final, we are the second Welsh League side to reach the final, Barry Town being the first when they beat Cardiff City at the Millennium Stadium in the 1993-94 season.

Our first effort on goal came after five minutes when John Felton crossed for Ian Jones but his shot was high and wide.  After eight minutes a Shaun O'Leary corner was met beyond the far post by Karl Lewis but he leant back in his shot and sent it high over the bar.  We continued to take the game to Welshpool and after 11 minutes Ian fed Craig Jones whose shot was turned behind for another corner.  Karl Lewis got his head to the corner but it was headed away for yet another corner.  There was an amazing sequence in the Welshpool penalty area after 24 minutes, it resembled a ping pong match when a number of our shots were blocked and the ball was eventually cleared.

On 26 minutes a Liam shot was fumbled by the Welshpool keeper but there was no-one near enough to turn the rebound in.  We then had a free kick for a foul on Ian, Steve Parry took the free kick but Karl Lewis headed wide.

Then disaster and completely against the run of play Welshpool scored.  A poor defensive header was picked up and passed to Aden Shannon who scored from the edge of the area giving Brian no chance.  We hit back and forced another corner and maintained the pressure over a period of 5 minutes without finding the finishing touch.  On 37 minutes Craig Jones fed Liam but his shot went straight at the keeper, within seconds we were back on the attack but as Ian went to shoot the ball bobbled and went harmlessly over the bar.

Brian then distinguished himself with two terrific saves just before half time.

On 49 minutes John Felton was clear but adjudged offside, and two minutes later Ian was played in by John but his shot went wide.  Again on 56 minutes Ian played John in but his shot was blocked by the keeper at the expense of a corner.  We continued to pressurise Welshpool without finding the final ball.  Disaster on 65 minutes when Craig Martin gave away a penalty by handling the ball.  Steve Rogers took the penalty and sent it hopelessly wide.  On 71 minutes came the goal, Phil Holmes who had gone on for Craig Jones after 68 minutes won a free kick in the middle of the goal about 23 yards out.  Steve Parry struck the free kick and scored, although, Phil is claiming it went in off him!  Still GAME ON.

Paul Evans then won two important headers in our area and Welshpool finally put us under some pressure.  In added on time Ian was clear but was forced wide and eventually shot wide and right on time Welshpool forced a corner but it was cleared to the sound of the full time whistle.

In the first five minutes of extra time great work by Liam found Ian but his cross was too near the keeper.  Shaun O'Leary then found John Felton but the ball wouldn't come down cleanly and he was forced to head the ball which from 15 yards was straight at the keeper.  Welshpool finally attacked but Brian was equal to it with a smart save.  Right on half time the Welshpool keeper miskicked and the ball went straight to Phil Holmes who shot first time but just over the crossbar from 30 yards.

John Felton, Ian Jones and Steve Parry combined well several times in the second period of extra time but neither side could find an opening in the half, and so to penalties.

We took the first, Ian Jones, scored - 1-0
