Unless otherwise stated all match reports relate to Division Two
Saturday 11 August 2007 Pontyclun 1, Cardiff Corries 1 Pontyclun’s 2007-2008 campaign in the MacWhirter Welsh football league Division One got underway with a home fixture against their Radyr neighbours and honours ended even as both sides took a point from a 1-1 draw, writes Greg Lamerton, Pontyclun FC.
Pontyclun FC - 11/08/2007 Pontyclun included new signings Jason Smith and Fraser Williams but suffered a pre-match set back when Craig Williams failed a last minute fitness test. Ponty started brightly with the pace of Fraser Williams causing problems down the left hand side and Williams created an opening for himself but his shot was wide of the mark and failed to trouble Corries keeper Rhys Nadin. However it was the visitors who created the first clear cut chance when a good break down the right ended with Ponty keeper Rhys Davies blocking an effort at the near post. The ball rebounded to Corries number nine Rhys Yates who blasted the ball high over the bar from no more than six yards out with an open goal at his mercy. Minutes later the Corries twin strike force carved open the Ponty defence with some neat interplay which forced an excellent save from Davies. Striker Yates had further opportunities to give the Corries the lead but Davies made another excellent stop from point blank range and Yates fired yet another opening over the bar. Although Pontyclun had their fair share of the play in the opening half, they were fortunate to go into the break all square. Pontyclun did not heed the warnings from the first half on resumption of play and once again had to rely on Davies to keep the Corries out after Yates yet again broke through on the right. However Davies could do nothing to prevent the visitors taking the lead five minutes into the half when Yates struck after a quickly taken throw caught Jay Browning out of position and the ball was played into the box to give the Corries striker an easy tap in. Ross Youlden came on for Pontyclun in place of the struggling James Russell with young David Bevan replacing Browning minutes later. Youlden had an immediate impact on proceedings when he played an excellent long ball up to Ross Hutchins on the edge of the Corries box. The pacy striker, who had up to that stage, had a quiet game controlled the ball well and turned to fire an excellent shot into the top of the net at the point where the bar meets the post, giving keeper Nadin no chance of saving it. With his job done, Hutchins made way for Ceiron Beer for the last ten minutes and both sides played out the remainder of the game content to take a point each. Manager Phil Preene appeared content with the result but the attack did not create enough chances and never really looked like scoring prior to Hutchins’ effort. In addition there is a need for a centre back to shore up things in defence especially as club captain Barry Quinn is a long term casualty following his horrific broken leg suffered last season. Pontyclun FC: Rhys Davies, Jay Browning, Eliot Davey, Tyrone Pope, Adrian James, James Russell, Jason Smith, Fraser Williams, Phil Watson, Andy Morris, Ross Hutchins Pontyclun entertain Caerau(Ely) at Ivor Park on Wednesday 15th August with a 6.30 k.o. and have a further home match versus UWIC at Ivor Park on Saturday 18th August k.o. 2.30pm
Saturday 5 May 2007 Pontyclun 0 - 0 Garw Athletic Pontyclun gave a good account of themselves in this Welsh League Division Two fixture, where the visitors had recently secured the midweek point necessary to give them the league title and promotion to Welsh League Division One. Pontyclun were able to recall player-coach Adrian James and also gave a start to young striker Ceiron Beer, after their midweek draw with Caerau Ely. In gaining a point, Pontyclun guaranteed their place in Division Two next season, making a tremendous recovery after being pointless after the first six games of the season and looking like relegation candidates with a host of key players missing the opening games of the season. This particular game was to be one of few chances and both teams tried to get the ball down and play constructive football. Garw enjoyed more possession during the first half, without really troubling the Pontyclun defensive unit of Adrian James, Eliot Davey and Ross Youlden. Clun’s goalkeeper Rhys Davies looked secure whenever he was called into action and towards the end of the opening half was called into action to tip away a fine volley by Garw’s Wells. At the other end, it was a similar story where Pontyclun didn’t really create too many clear cut chances but with Hutchins and Beer working hard up front, the Garw backline had to be on their toes. The second period was very similar to the previous half, with Garw passing the ball around and the Clun happy to let them go sideways across the pitch but prevented them from getting any real penetration. Although chances were few and far between, there was still some good football on show for the appreciative crowd at the Ivor Park. Both teams had half chances before the end of the game but the scoreline remained blank at the full time whistle. Garw were then presented with the Welsh League Division Two trophy by Welsh League Representative Alf Germain. This was the Clun’s penultimate game of the season and on Tuesday 8th May, they play their final game of the season away to Townhill based West End, kick off is at 6.30pm. Pontyclun: Rhys Davies, Jason Browning, Simon Payne, Eliot Davey, Ross Youlden, Adrian James, Craig Williams, Ryan Blanche, Jon Rees, Ceiron Beer, Ross Hutchins. Subs: S Williams, G Mele, W Morgan.
Wednesday 2 May 2007 Caerau Ely 1 - 1 Pontyclun Pontyclun had to be satisfied with a point after their trip to Cwrt-yr-Ala to face a Caerau Ely side that face a punishing end of season run-in with another five games to play after this fixture. Pontyclun once more had to reshuffle, as they lost Tyrone Pope and David Lewis and Geraint Williams through injury in addition to player-coach Adrian James through suspension. On the plus side, the Clun were able to recall Jon Rees, Eliot Davey, Rhys Davies and Craig Roberts to the starting lineup. It was Roberts who looked the most dangerous in the opening exchanges as he continually caused Caerau’s hesitant back four problems. First, he burst through and forced the keeper into two fingertip saves after being put clear by Blanche and then Craig Williams. The third chance came when once more, Roberts sprinted clear and as he burst into the box, he had his shirt pulled by Caerau’s Jeff Pike as he was about to shoot, but amazingly the referee waved play on. However, Pontyclun did take the lead on 28 minutes from a free kick, when Jon Rees spotted a gap and curled home a great shot which left the keeper motionless to make it 1-0 to the Pontyclun. They should have gone further ahead when Craig Williams made a good break to the bye-line and pulled the ball across the area to Andrew Morris who looked set to score but saw the ball bobble over his foot as he prepared to side-foot home. Pontyclun's keeper Rhys Davies had his first real save to make on 40 minutes when he dived full length to push a good strike from Caerau’s Greatrex around the post. Pontyclun defenders Youlden, Davey and Rees were coping well with the physical presence of Caerau’s Harrington as the home side pushed for an equalizer. Also, young Jay Browning was putting in a good performance at right wing-back. The second half saw Caerau have more of the game than in the first period as they threw bodies forward. The lively Cotterill looked the most likely threat for the home side with his tireless running. Indeed he grabbed a scrambled equalizer on 70 minutes when the Clun defence froze, isolating keeper Davies with the headed effort squeezing in at the far post. Pontyclun then had a scare when Ross Youlden suffered a head injury after a full-blooded collision but thankfully was okay to continue. Both sides had chances to win the game before the end with Caerau striking the angle of post and bar after a swift move. In the very last minute, lively young Pontyclun substitute Ceiron Beer outpaced the home defence before lobbing the onrushing Caerau keeper perfectly, only to see his goal-bound effort cruelly bounce over the bar off the bone-hard pitch. This was the last action of the game and Pontyclun would certainly have secured all three points. Pontyclun now host recently crowned Division Two champions Garw Athletic on Saturday 5th May (2.30pm kick off), followed by the final game of the season, away to Swansea based West End on Tues 8th May (6.30pm kick off).
Saturday 21 April 2007 Pontyclun 3 - 0 Llwydcoed Pontyclun looked to finally ease their possible relegation worries against bottom side Llwydcoed after suffering a 3-1 loss at Cardiff Corries in midweek. The ‘Clun were again without a number of regulars and had to draft in Dai Lewis and Gavin Rees to play alongside Eliot Davey in defence. Ross Youlden, who had a very good game at centre back against the Corries, was moved in to midfield in place of the suspended Adrian James and Andy Morris returned in attack. The first half was somewhat of a cautious affair as neither side could really afford to lose with Llwydcoed fighting for their lives at the bottom and the ‘Clun not wanting to be dragged into a relegation battle with a handful of games remaining. The mercurial Ryan Blanche came closest to breaking the deadlock when he struck a post from a free kick and when the ball was hooked back in from the clearance, Gavin Rees saw his goal bound header kicked off the line by a Llwydcoed defender. As Ponty pressed with some neat build up play, they were frustrated by repeatedly being caught offside and at the back they looked a little shaky at times and nearly went behind when the visitor’s centre forward broke clear but thankfully his chipped effort from 25 yards just crept over Rhys Davies’ crossbar. Coach James’ half time talk must have been inspirational as within twenty minutes of the restart Ponty found themselves three up with the points safely in the bag. Ross Hutchins was replaced by Craig Holly in attack and the youngster immediately caused problems with his strong running. A Blanche free kick found Youlden in the box and he blasted his effort just over the top but the same pair combined to bring the first goal minutes later when Youlden glance a header into the net following yet another Blanche free kick. Then Blanche played a clever short ball to Simon Payne from a corner but Payne’s excellent ball in was missed by both Morris and Holly as they got in each others way in the six yard box. However Ponty were not long in extending their lead when another superb cross from Payne was nodded in by the rangy Morris. Llwydcoed then had their left back Stuart Evans sent off for receiving two yellow cards and Ponty made the game safe with a third goal almost immediately thereafter. Craig Holly chased down a ball which appeared to be going out for a goal kick and he was rewarded for his hard work when his cross in to the box was converted by John Rees with the aid of a slight deflection. Ponty then strung together a great move involving several players with the ball being pinged around and although Dai Lewis’s final ball in was disappointing, applause rang round the ground from an appreciative audience. So an excellent win from the ‘Clun and three points against strugglers Morriston Town at Ivor Park next Saturday ko 2.30pm should finally see them secure their position in the Division for another season. The Club held a car was to raise funds for their new changing rooms on the morning of the match and would like to thank all the volunteers who turned up to help. Particular thanks must go to the children who worked very, very hard namely Sam Shilton, Lewis Miller, Ceiron and Jordan Lawrence and Madeline, Lucy-Anne and Molly Davies. Many thanks also to all the patrons who turned up to have their vehicles washes and to Mid Glamorgan Fire Service, without whose help the event could not have taken place. On Friday 4th May Pontyclun FC are holding a Sports Quiz at the Athletic Club, Caston Road, Pontyclun from 7.30pm with cash prizes for the winners. Please come along and support us in raising fund for our changing room project. Teams of up to five persons per team are invited to attend. . Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 14 April 2007 Cambrian & Clydach 2 - 0 Pontyclun Pontyclun traveled to near neighbours Cambrian & Clydach Vale but returned empty handed, going down 2-0 to a side that are joint top of the division and near certainties for promotion. The ‘Clun were forced to play veteran utility player Peter Shilton in goal owing to the injury or unavailability of every goalkeeper on the clubs books and he took to the task well despite leading somewhat of a charmed life in the opening half. The match was played on a rock hard surface owing to the recent fine weather and both sides found difficulty in getting the ball under control owing to the exaggerated bounce. Ponty competed well for the opening thirty minutes and limited their hosts to one long range effort which Shilton smothered after a slight fumble. Adrian James, the Pontyclun coach, battled in midfield aided by two willing deputies in Simon Payne and Craig Williams and the back three of Eliot Davey, Tyrone Pope and Ross Youlden competed for every ball. Shilton rode his first piece of luck when Cambrian’s number six Scott Seldon hit a speculative shot from 25 yards out and the keeper was relieved to see the effort rebound off a post after making no effort to save the shot as he obviously thought the ball was going wide. Ponty created a half-opening minutes later after good interplay between strikers Hutchins and Geraint Williams but Hutchins’ effort was weak and well wide. Eliot Davey then cynically hacked down a home attacker as he broke through and from the resultant free kick, Richard Taylor hit the crossbar with Shilton a mere spectator as the ball flew past him. Shortly after Cambrian's Kristoffer Rees lobbed Shilton for what surely seemed a goal but the ball finished inches over the bar and landed on the top of the net. Minutes before the break central defender Christian Cole’s effort also went over the top and the ‘Clun were relieved to go in to the break all square. The hosts made a lively start to the second period and Richard Taylor again struck the crossbar, but this time with a headed effort after the ball was hooked in from the right hand side. Seconds later Shaun Williams cleared a corner off his own line and Davey was at full stretch to block an effort from the resulting ball played back in. Ponty were being put under pressure by the Cambrian midfield and it seemed only a matter of time before they took the lead. It eventually came courtesy of a penalty kick when Craig Williams handled the ball inside the area and number nine Darren Jones stepped up to stroke the ball past Shilton. Manager Phil Preene was forced to ring the changes and brought on three substitutes for the last twenty minutes or so after Pope and Craig Williams both picked up knocks, to add to Pontyclun’s woeful injury list. Just as the game appeared to be petering out into a 1-0 victory for the home team, they scored a second when Darren Jones found himself completely unmarked following a corner and headed in to the net from two yards out. So a lot of effort from the ‘Clun boys on the day and they certainly never gave up on the battle but the injuries being picked up are stretching the squad to breaking point and the team need a few more points to prevent them being dragged back into a relegation battle. But with the bottom two sides to visit Ivor Park before the end of the season, the points needed to remain in the division should be comfortably obtained. ‘Clun visit Cardiff Corinthians on Wednesday 18th April ko 6.30pm. Pontyclun FC are holding a charity CAR WASH this coming Saturday 21st April at the Fire Station, Llantrisant Road, Pontyclun from 9.00am to 1pm so please come along and make a donation and get your vehicle nice and clean. In addition the club are holding a SPORTS QUIZ on Friday 4th May at the Athletic Club, Pontyclun from 7.30pm. Teams of up to five at £10 per team are invited to compete with large cash prizes for the winners. Details can be obtained from Greg Lamerton e mail phoneinstead@yahoo.co.uk. Wednesday 4 April 2007 Pontyclun 0 - 0 Caldicot Town Honours ended even in this MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two game at the Ivor Park. Pontyclun went into the match against the promotion-chasing Gwent visitors still missing a number of key personnel including keeper Rhys Davies, defenders Tyrone Pope and Captain Barry Quinn, striker Andrew Morris and veteran Carl Lewis. In came goalkeeper Brett Davey, defenders Gavin Rees and Dai Lewis and striker Craig Holley for their first appearances of the season and all performed very well on the night. Even though the visitors are in the promotion shake-up, Pontyclun have an excellent record against Caldicot in recent years and with hindsight, both teams will view the result as a decent point gained on a rock-hard pitch. The first half was a pretty even affair with both teams canceling out most of the attacking play in the final third. Caldicot did enjoy a 15 minute spell where they forced a flurry of corners and set pieces around the Pontyclun penalty area but only managed to carve out one clear-cut chance when Lewis was caught in possession and the ball was squared but Cullimore was unable to control his shot and blazed over. For the ‘Clun, Geraint Williams, returning after a spell in Australia looked sharp up front and caused the Caldicot defence problems with his movement in partnership with debut-making Holley. Player-coach Adrian James had a chance for the Clun in the thirty-third minute, after great build-up play from Ryan Blanche, John Rees and James resulted in the keeper making a comfortable save. Within minutes, John Rees played in Simon Payne who played a dangerous ball across goal with nobody able to get the decisive touch to put the ball away. At the other end, Davey was a commanding presence in the Pontyclun goal whenever he was called upon and looked secure at all times. The second period saw the game follow a similar pattern with half-chances at both ends but Caldicot going closest after 60 minutes when Eliot Davey, Gavin Rees and Dai Lewis who all defended very well all night were grateful to see keeper Brett Davey tip the ball onto the crossbar after Caldicot managed to get into the penalty area and the ball was cleared away to safety. Pontyclun then put together a spell of attacking play and should have taken the lead on 72 minutes when Geraint Williams was played through by John Rees and as the keeper rushed out, Williams produced a great finish, striking home from 40 yards only for the linesman to flag for offside when Williams was clearly onside by some five or six yards. That wasn’t the end of the lineman’s involvement as within five minutes John Rees was through on goal, after a great passing move from Craig Williams, Blanche and James. Even though Rees’ run had come from inside his own half, the linesman seemed to be distracted by Williams jogging back to the half way line on the other side of the pitch and flagged for offside even though the player was 40 yards from the play and making his way back and not getting involved in the play. Caldicot also struck one effort into the side netting from a difficult angle with keeper Davey having the angles covered. So, in the end a point for each side as it was in the reverse fixture earlier in the season when the score finished at 3-3 in Caldicot. Pontyclun’s next matches are at home to Ammanford on Saturday March 7th March, followed by a short trip to second-placed Cambrian & Clydach on Saturday March 14th, both matches kick off at 2.30 pm. Pontyclun: Brett Davey, Craig Williams, Dai Lewis, Eliot Davey, Gavin Rees, Simon Payne, Adrian James, John Rees, Ryan Blanche, Craig Holley, Geraint Williams. Subs: Ross Hutchins (rep Holley 78 mins), Shaun Williams, Pepe Mele.
Saturday 31 March 2007 Garw 4 – 0 Pontyclun Pontyclun went in to this game on the back of four straight wins, they also went into this match against the leaders of the division with a number of key players missing. Indeed, the Clun were missing their entire defensive unit from the last three games and the absentees included injured captain Barry Quinn, influential defender Tyrone Pope, the energetic John Rees and the much improved Rhys Davies all missed this fixture, together with striker Ross Hutchins. In came Welsh League debutant Mark Scowcroft in goal and Pontyclun legend “Dusty” Miller also answered the rallying call. League leaders Garw started this game with immediate intent. Their busy midfield got their passing game together right from the off. Also with their energetic forwards they put the Clun under constant pressure. It was no surprise then when the home side took the lead. A foul five yards outside the box resulted in an excellent free kick being scored when the Garw forward put the ball over the wall and into the bottom left hand corner giving Scowcroft no chance. The pressure from the home was persistent and after the half hour mark they increased their lead when the Clun failed to clear in their own box, both Eliot Davey and Craig Williams both tried to take responsibility to clear the ball but managed to get in each others way allowing the Garw striker to calmly slot in from eight yards again giving Scowcroft no chance. Pontyclun then tried to up the tempo and started to make an impact in the game. The tireless Adrian James tried to lead by example and increase the commitment from Pontyclun. Despite the fact Pontyclun were 2-0 down, they were then dealt another blow losing inform striker Andrew Morris who left the field with a hamstring injury. This caused a re-shuffle with the experienced Carl Lewis entering the midfield and Geraint Williams being pushed upfront. Williams started to hold the ball up well and the midfield where now starting to compete. Despite this Garw added a controversial third which was at least two yards off side which the rather unfit official failed to spot, the home striker rounded Scowcroft and slotted home with the desperate Davey and Miller just failing to clear off the line. To this point Pontyclun hadn’t created any chances as the Garw back line were getting the better of young Matthew James and Williams. The halftime whistle went with Garw three goals to the good. The second half started much the same as the first with Garw doing all the attacking. The Pontyclun backline of Miller, Davey and Simon Payne never gave up and carried on holding their ground despite the ball coming straight back at them time and time again. The home side's right winger was particularly enjoying the afternoon as he continually caused opposite number Ryan Blanche problems. Indeed it is fair to say that Garw started to exploit this with all their attacking down the Pontyclun left. After the constant barrage of attacks on the 75th minute mark they did eventually increase their lead when the Garw number ten beat a couple of players on the edge of the box before firing passed Scowcroft who once again had no chance. Another legend of Pontyclun was then introduced as the skilful Shaun Williams had to leave the field with a muscle strain and on came Pepe Mele. Mele was instantly involved as Pontyclun produced their best move of the match. A number of passes in the midfield resulted in the ball being spread wide to Mele who produced a pin point cross for Williams who drilled the ball straight at the home keeper who despite taking a number of goal kicks had probably his first real save to make. Garw then made changes themselves and the excellent right winger was subbed probably to Blanches relief. It has to be said that despite trailing this game, the majority of the Pontyclun players kept going to the end even if it wasn’t going to be their day. The game fizzled out with plenty of endeavour from Pontyclun and with a number of players playing out of position and players missing, they can hold their heads up for the effort they put in. Big thank you must go to Phil Miller and Pepe Mele for again putting their boots on as so many key players were missing. Pontyclun have a home game against Caldicot Town on Wednesday 4th April which will Kick off at 6.30pm, followed by another home game against Ammanford Town on Sat 7th March at 2.30pm. Pontyclun Team: Mark Scowcroft, Eliot Davey, Simon Payne, Phil Miller, Ryan Blanche, Shaun Williams, Craig Williams, Adrian James, Geraint Williams, Matthew James, Andrew Morris, Subs: Pepe Mele, David Lewis, Carl Lewis
Saturday 24 March 2007 Pontyclun 1 - 0 Tredegar Town Another excellent three points propelled Pontyclun into the top half of the table but the result was somewhat overshadowed by a nasty injury to captain Barry Quinn who was stretchered off a minute before half time and taken to hospital where he was found to have both dislocated and broken his right ankle. Naturally he will play no further part in the Clun’s remaining fixtures this season and everyone connected with the club sends their best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery. The match was anything but a spectacle with both sides cancelling each other out despite the attempt to play attractive football. The majority of the play was centred on the midfield area and Ponty suffered a loss there midway through the half, when Carl Lewis was forced to leave the fray after tweaking a hamstring. Apart from an early half chance when Tyrone Pope just failed to get his head to a Ryan Blanche free kick the first noteworthy incident to happen in a lack lustre opening period was Quinn’s injury. The referee blew early for half time and the second half was delayed for ten minutes whilst the paramedics escorted Quinn from the field. Quinn was replaced for the second half by young Shaun Williams and with almost his first touch Williams found player coach Adrian James with a pass but with the goal beckoning, James completely “fluffed” his shot, living up to his “fluff” nickname! Shortly after Mathew James created an opening for himself with some neat footwork, but again the final shot was poor and didn’t really trouble the keeper. At the other end John Rees was caught in possession in his own area and Ponty were relieved to see the ball deflected for a corner from the ensuing effort. The visitors started to play some attractive football and had a chance to break the stalemate but Sam Goulding blasted an effort over the bar after the ball was squared to him on the edge of the area. Ponty then created an opening when Tyrone Pope played a diagonal ball over the top of the defence to find Simon Payne unmarked at the far post but sadly Payne could not add to the goal he scored at Llwydcoed the previous week and blasted his effort over the top. However Ponty did take the lead with twenty five minutes of the half played when Andy Morris found the net from the edge of the area, his shot just creeping in after hitting the inside of a post. Manager Preene sent on Ross Hutchins to replace the ineffectual Blanche for the last twenty minutes and Ponty comfortably held on to their lead and secured the points. Ponty travel to leaders Garw Athletic next Saturday minus a number of players as John Rees and Tyrone Pope are holidaying, Carl Lewis is injured and of course, the skipper is out. The club are holding a charity CAR WASH at the fire station, Pontyclun on Saturday the 21st April from 9am-1pm and would like to thank the local fire brigade for their generous hospitality in allowing the use of their facility. In addition the club are hosting a Sports Quiz night at the Athletic Club on Thursday the 4th May from 7.30pm. Entry is £10 per team (up to five per team) with large cash prizes for the winners/runners up. All sports fans/quiz teams are cordially invited to enter and further details can be obtained from club secretary Peter Shilton by e mail: petershilton@supanet.com There are also limited tickets left for the Gentlemens' Evening with guest speakers, comedian and three course dinner at the Athletic Club on Thursday 10th May and details can be obtained from Tyrone Pope by e mail: tyronepope@uwclub.net Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 17 March 2007 AFC Llwydcoed 1 - 2 Pontyclun Pontyclun continued their excellent recent form and made it three wins on the bounce after a hard-fought win against struggling Llwydcoed in a match played in windy conditions. A minute's silence was observed by both teams prior to kick off as a mark of respect to former Pontyclun goalkeeper and reserve team Manager Laurie Dodd who sadly passed away recently and whose son Gary also represented the club with great distinction and indeed 17 year old grandson Liam is now continuing the family tradition by representing the club. The minute's silence was also held in memory of Father Paul Bennett, who was tragically killed last week at his home in Aberdare and was well known in the Llwydcoed community. The Clun had Tyrone Pope, Eliot Davey and Ryan Blanche back in the squad after last week's win against Penrhiwceiber. The home side, who are battling for their lives at the bottom of the table, started the game with the higher tempo, with the Clun taking longer to settle. As the half wore on, Pontyclun forced a number of set pieces around the box and skipper Barry Quinn headed wide from a Ryan Blanche free kick during a very scrappy first half. Llwydcoed controversially took the lead on 30 minutes after a drop-ball, where the referee tried to distract the two players contesting the drop ball, as he put the ball into play. The ball broke kindly for the home side who were able to get in behind and Mason whipped a dangerous ball across the six yard area where Phillips nipped in front of Carl Lewis to open the scoring for Coed. The home side were visibly lifted by the goal and Pontyclun now had to raise their game. Pontyclun’s management team of Phil Preene and Adrian James read the riot act to their side at half time after they had not performed in the opening half and the Clun players returned for the second half with their ears stinging and knowing that far more was required. The pep talk seemed to work as Pontyclun dominated the second half and hit back within seven minutes of the re-start when Andrew Morris crashed home a header from a good Ryan Blanche corner to make it one all. Pontyclun were now winning all the physical battles and put Coed under pressure. Matthew James went on a mazy run which nearly resulted in a goal. Tyrone Pope powered a header over the bar after another Blanche corner as the home side struggled to cope with the aerial threat of Morris, Quinn and Pope. The visiting supporters were then rewarded when Pontyclun grabbed their second goal with twenty minutes remaining. Craig Williams picked out Ross Hutchins with a good cross, who headed back across goal to Simon Payne who thundered a header against the bar before following up to finish the job as the ball bounced down off the bar for his first goal for the club. From this point onwards there only looked like being one winner as Pontyclun’s confidence grew. Llwydcoed did force a good save out of keeper Rhys Davies from a free kick and saw one effort rebound off the crossbar with their best chances. The Clun should have wrapped the game up with ten minutes remaining as Blanche was played in behind the defence with the keeper to beat but chose to take his shot early and it resulted in a comfortable save. The Coed then lost their discipline as their centre back was sent off for a head-butt on Blanche in the closing minutes. As the final whistle came, Pontyclun had come away with a fairly comfortable win after an indifferent first half. Credit must go to Phil Preene and Adrian James for giving their side the wake up call they needed. Next week, (Sat 24th March) Pontyclun have a home game against Tredegar Town at the Ivor Park (kick off 2.30pm). Later that evening, the club are holding a Race Night at Pontyclun Athletic Club, with eight races plus a bonus race on the night. Betting available as well as race sponsorship. Contact Tudor Davies at tudorda@coversure.co.uk or just turn up on the night from 7pm. Pontyclun: Rhys Davies, Jon Rees, Simon Payne, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, Craig Williams, Carl Lewis, Ryan Blanche, Matthew James, Andrew Morris Subs: Eliot Davey (rep Lewis 75 mins), Ross Hutchins (rep James), David Bevan Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 10 March 2007 Pontyclun 3 - 2 Penrhiwceiber Rangers Another fine display by Pontyclun to follow their excellent performance at Morriston the previous week, ensured another three points and marched them nearer a mid table position. Ponty had to reshuffle their defensive line with both Tyrone Pope and Eliot Davey missing and reverted to a standard 4-3-3 formation with Andy Morris returning to partner young Matt James in attack. Ponty were at it form the off and James had two early chances to give them the lead but the combination of a good save by the keeper and a weak effort from James himself saw the chances squandered. On the quarter of a hour mark skipper Quinn got in a header from a corner which was blocked on the line and Andy Morris’ follow up was also kicked off the line by a visiting defender. Ponty were not to be denied though and took the lead through James after an excellent move down the right. Ponty looked to increase their lead and both Craig Williams and Andy Morris shot wide when in good goal scoring positions. Ponty looked dominant but as usually happens, they were punished for not taking the chances on offer and the Ceiber made it 1-1 when Ponty failed to clear a corner and Nathan Manley netted from close in. Immediately though Ponty came agonisingly close to regaining their lead but Simon Payne’s blistering drive was tipped over by visiting keeper Daniel Ford. At the other end, Ceiber won a free kick yards outside the box and in an almost identical repeat of what occurred with Ryan Giggs against Lille in the Champions League, they took the kick when Ponty were trying to organise a wall but to everyone’s relief the shot struck an upright. Ponty then broke and Shaun Williams had another excellent effort cleared off the line. Ponty went in to half time wondering how they were not at least two goals to the good but grateful for that let off from the free kick. In contrast to the first half, the opening twenty minutes after the restart were somewhat of a drab affair with hardy a goal scoring opportunity created by either side with both teams trying to gain control of the midfield areas. Quinn sent an effort inches wide from a corner before the same player was slightly outpaced in defence and the ‘Ceiber number eight forced Davies into a fine save. Shaun Williams then made way for sub David Bevan and within seconds Shaun’s elder brother Craig was brought down in the box and Ponty were awarded a penalty. Up stepped Carl Lewis who coolly slotted past Ford to regain the lead for Ponty. Then an excellent move involving the sub Bevan and Craig Williams resulted in Williams playing a fine long pass to send livewire James clear. He got to the ball first as he sped into the area and the keeper brought him down as he rushed out off his line. Lewis again, scored with some aplomb from the resultant kick and Ponty moved into a 3-1 lead. Ceiber though, ensured Ponty would suffer a nervous last ten minutes or so after Manley netted following a Vowles corner kick and had keeper Davies to thank when he produced a fine save to retain the lead. Ponty should have made it safe with minutes left when Beer prodded the ball inches wide after good work from Morris when he harried the keeper after a long Quinn free kick into the Ceiber area. Pontyclun thoroughly deserved all three points from this match and can confidently travel to bottom side Llwydcoed next Saturday looking to extend their fine recent run. The ‘Clun are holding a “Race Night” on Saturday 24th March at the Athletic Club, Pontyclun, so if you fancy a flutter or simply a good night out, just turn up as entry is free. In addition the club will be holding a Sports Quiz night on Friday 4th May and a Gentlemen’s Evening with guest speakers and a comedian on Thursday 10th May, both events being held at the Athletic Club. Saturday 3 March 2007 Morriston Town 0 - 5 Pontyclun Pontyclun traveled west to the Swansea suburbs and put on a five star performance in trouncing struggling Morriston Town with a nap hand of goals. Pontyclun were missing Elliot Davey and striker Andy Morris and played Carl Lewis in a wing back roll and brought in livewire 16-year-old Matthew James to partner Craig Roberts in attack. Pontyclun went about their business straight from the off and were two up inside the opening ten minutes. Firstly Craig Roberts unleashed a tremendous shot that flew past the keeper and Craig Williams slotted a second minutes later. Ponty had a scare when skipper Barry Quinn had to leave the field for a while after suffering a nasty cut on the forehead but he returned resembling Pudsey Bear after a bandage had been applied to the wound. Ponty then had several chances to increase the score with Matt James and Craig Williams spurning golden opportunities. The third goal did eventually arrive when James burst clear and although his effort was blocked by the keeper, Ryan Blanche followed up to slot coolly home. Morriston had a chance to reduce the deficit following a corner but keeper Rhys Davies pulled off a superb save to tip over a point blank header. In all honesty Ponty could have scored six or seven in the opening half but Manager Preene was content with the half time lead. It was much of the same in the second half with Ponty in the ascendancy and they created, and spurned chance after chance. Young James scored the fourth with a fierce drive from the edge of the area and with the result in no doubt, Preene rang the changes and brought on subs Browning, Hutchins and Beer. Indeed Beer should have netted seconds after coming on as he broke clear but he shot straight at the advancing keeper. In their eagerness, Ponty kept getting caught offside and it took an excellent run from his own half by Simon Payne to set up Hutchins for the fifth. This was an excellent win for Pontyclun with the whole team performing well and young James was particularly impressive and surely deserves a run in the side. Next week Ponty entertain Penrhiwceiber on Saturday 10th March at Ivor Park K.O. 2.30pm, looking to avenge a narrow defeat suffered earlier in the season. They then travel to bottom club Llwydcoed on the 17th March. Pontyclun are holding a RACE NIGHT on Saturday 24th March at the Athletic Club so if you fancy a flutter pop along as entry is free, starting at 7.30pm. Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 24 February 2007 Pontyclun 1 - 1 Treharris Athletic This was always going to be an interesting match up as Pontyclun came into the fixture off the back of two straight defeats while their opponents had enjoyed a three game winning run. As it happened honours were even at the end of a dogged encounter where the visitors just shaded the first half but Pontyclun fought back after the break to even things up. The Clun’ were without the inspirational Tyrone Pope and deployed John Rees in a sweeper position alongside captain Barry Quinn and Eliot Davey in defence. Ponty’ created the first significant chance when young Shaun Williams rounded the keeper but with an empty net begging, he delayed his execution and the chance was missed as a defender got back to clear. Ponty’ were to rue this miss on the half hour mark after possession was given away in midfield and a good through ball enabled the rangy Treharris number nine Ian Batten to shoot easily past Rees for the opener. After the break Ponty settled the earlier and were rewarded with an equaliser following a corner when Eliot Davey bundled the ball in from close range. Thereafter followed a hard fought midfield battle as both sides strived to get on top and John Rees prevented the visitors going in front with a superb last minute tackle deep inside the area. Treharris had what seemed a very good goal turned down by the referee's assistant for offside and their substitute sent a very good effort inches wide. Ponty’ manager Phil Preene threw on 16-year-old Ceiron Beer for his Welsh League debut for the final ten minutes or so but the game petered out into a draw which was a fair result on the basis of play. Pontylcun next visit Morriston Town on Saturday 3rd March ko 2.30pm. Pontyclun FC are holding a RACE NIGHT at the Athletic Club on the evening of the 24th March (after the Wales v England rugby International) as part of their fund raising activities, so if you fancy a flutter just turn up as entry is free. Saturday 17 February 2007 Briton Ferry 2 - 1 Pontyclun Pontyclun slipped to a third consecutive defeat at Briton Ferry on Saturday and risk being dragged in to a relegation battle unless they turn things round over the next few weeks. Pontyclun’s cause was not helped by the late withdrawal of John Rees and the absences of Ryan Blanche who was on holiday and Simon Payne who was suspended. In came Carl Lewis in a midfield role and youngsters Shaun Williams and Darren Webb in the wing back positions. The home side went in to an early lead after fourteen minutes of action when Rob Parker netted with the Ponty defence vainly appealing for offside. Minutes later they nearly doubled their lead when their number nine Phillips ran onto a through ball and lobbed the onrushing Ponty keeper Rhys Davies but fortunately for Ponty the ball just crept over the bar. Tyrone Pope then gave away a free kick on the edge of the area and from the resultant kick the ball rebounded off a post after being deflected by Pope’s head. Pontyclun came back into the game for a while and forced a succession of corners and free kicks, without really threatening to score. Andy Morris came closest after getting his head to an excellent dead ball kick from Pope but the keeper pulled off a fine save. Then on the stroke of half time, Webb gave a simple ball away and Ferry broke straight down the middle. They looked sure to increase their lead but their number 11 Dan McGrath shot narrowly wide of Davies’ post. Pontyclun manager Phil Preene introduced Craig Roberts at half time, replacing the ineffectual Webb and in a reshuffle, played with three strikers. Craig Williams and Eliot Davey were both cautioned for foul tackles and Ponty were struggling to keep the Ferry attackers out. Davies had to pull of a superb save following a corner but Ponty were further hampered when Carl Lewis had to leave the field after suffering a blow to the head when the ball struck him. Shaun Williams saw his cross come shot just creep over the bar before Ponty fell further behind minutes later. A swift move out of defence saw Ferry break down the left and McGrath found himself totally unmarked and his cross was turned past Davies by Richard Howells. Davies kept the visitors in the match with one or two fine stops and Ponty gave themselves a lifeline when Andy Morris bundled the ball home following a corner. In the dying minutes Ross Hutchings had a few golden opportunities to snatch an equaliser but the chances went begging. So no points for Clun and none were really deserved from an inept performance against average opponents. Ponty captain Barry Quinn labelled the performance “unacceptable” and vowed to stop the rot when Treharris visit Ivor Park next Saturday, 24th Feb ko 2pm. Pontyclun are holding a race night at the Athletic Club on Saturday March 24th at 7.30pm and a Sports Quiz at the club on Friday 4th May at 8pm to aid their fund raising activities for the building of new changing rooms. Saturday 3 February 2007 Bettws 3 - 0 Pontyclun Pontyclun FC were out fought and out muscled rather than out played at Bettws Park last Saturday and came away empty handed. In a bruising first half, in which Bettws had Steve Amos sent off for a reckless challenge, Bettws gradually imposed their will on the match and took a 2-0 lead which the ‘Clun never looked like clawing back, despite playing against ten men for the entire second period. Indeed the deficit could have been greater at the break as Bettws missed a penalty after fifteen minutes following a good save by Rhys Davies. They did however take the lead ten minutes later when Jason Bird scrambled the ball home after it ricocheted around the area following a corner. There was no luck attached to the second goal however as Richard Llewellyn smashed an unstoppable shot into the top of the net from outside the box, giving Davies absolutely no chance in the Ponty goal. There were some stern confrontations happening on the pitch and this spilled over at the break as a small mêlée involving some of the players and spectators occurred as the teams walked off for half time. Bettws seemed content to sit on their lead after the break and pulled all of their nine outfield players behind the ball so Ponty found it hard to even muster one decent attempt on the home goal. The game was killed off on the hour mark when hesitancy in the Clun defence between Davies and Captain Barry Quinn resulted in Llewellyn nipping in between them and coolly lobbing Davies for his second goal. Ponty never gave up though and created a few half chances without really threatening the lead and the game petered out and ended in a comfortable win for the home side. Coach Adrian James reflected on the fact that a few of his players were hiding on the day and not really up for the battle that always welcomes visitors to the Maesteg valley ground. Ponty entertain high-flying Caldicot Town at Ivor Park on Saturday 10th February ko 2pm. Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 27 January 2007 Pontyclun 3 – 0 Garden Village Pontyclun secured another three points and continued their climb away from the lower reaches of Division Two of the MacWhirter Welsh Football League. This was never going to be an easy fixture against a side that have consistently had the better of the ‘Clun in their encounters over the last few seasons and indeed inflicted a 5-0 drubbing on the Clun at Gorseinon few short months ago. Pontyclun fielded what was possibly their full strength side but found themselves under a lot of pressure in the opening half hour, particularly from free kicks and corners where the visitors had a distinct height advantage. The home side had an excellent chance to secure an early lead after a superb passing movement started by Barry Quinn and involving Craig Williams and Ryan Blanche ended with striker Ross Hutchings blasting wide when he should have at least tested the keeper. The ‘Clun had three players booked in the opening period for foul tackles but referee Mr. Thomas from Baglan was very inconsistent with his decision making and let some strong challenges go unpunished whilst carding players for what appeared to be relatively minor offences. The visitors had the ball in the net early on following a corner but the effort was ruled out for a foul on Ponty keeper Rhys Davies. Williams made an excellent last gasp tackle in the area to thwart a Village goal attempt and Tyrone Pope cleared with a header from the resulting corner. Somewhat against the run of play, Ponty took the lead when Hutchings redeemed his earlier miss and shot neatly into the corner after good build up play from Williams and John Rees. The visitors then suffered a major blow when Steve Evans was sent off for a second book able offence in added time and they faced the prospect of playing ten versus eleven in the second half. Despite being one light The Village side again put the Clun under pressure after the break and forced a succession of corners but never really looked like breaching the home defensive line. As the half wore on though the extra man was beginning to tell and Ponty were finding gaps, particularly down the left flank. Adrian James fed Blanche and he tested the keeper from distance and Hutchings fired over the bar from just outside the area after an excellent cross from fellow striker Andy Morris. Blanche again brought a good save from Village keeper Stuart Lloyd and it seemed only a matter of time before they extended their lead. That happened in the 82nd minute when John Rees latched on to a through ball and controlled it beautifully before running in on goal and coolly slotting past Lloyd. In the dying minutes Blanche added a third when he chipped Lloyd and with the game wrapped up, manager Preene gave a run out to substitutes Shaun Williams and Jay Browning. So three excellent points from a difficult fixture and Ponty travel to Bettws next weekend for what will prove to be another tricky encounter as Bettws are in the middle of a good run of results themselves. Pontyclun FC are running a number of fund raising activities to aid the building of new changing facilities at Ivor Park and these will include a race night in February, a Valentines Day dance on Friday 16th Feb at the Athletic Club, a Dinner with guest speakers at the end of April and a sports quiz in early May. Saturday 13 January 2007 Troedyrhiw 1 - 1 Pontyclun FC Pontyclun earned an excellent point from their visit to high flying Troedyrhiw on Saturday 13th January. The ‘Clun welcomed back Craig Williams after injury and played youngster Lee Dodd, son of former Ponty star Gary Dodd, in a forward role. The home side had the better of the early skirmishes but the Pontyclun defensive unit of Pope, Davey and Quinn held firm despite the pressure being applied by a lively home attack. After repelling the early forages Pontyclun took the lead after fifteen minutes when a Ryan Blanche corner was flicked on by skipper Quinn and his fellow central defender Tyrone Pope crashed a firm header past the keeper. However the lead was short lived as minutes later a cross in from the left hand side found Troedyrhiw number five Rose unmarked at the far post and he placed a neat header past Rhys Davies. Ponty were gradually imposing their will on the game thanks to the midfield trio of James, Williams and Rees and Ryan Blanche looked dangerous from set plays whenever Ponty were awarded a free kick. Williams made a tremendous surge into the box after being put through by Andy Morris but found the side netting with his effort. Minutes later Ponty were unlucky not to retake the lead following another Blanche free kick. His pinpoint ball in found Quinn and he powered a header goal wards which the keeper did well to parry. The ball rebounded to Williams who was convinced he would score but somehow the keeper got back on his feet and made another fantastic save to keep the status quo. Seconds later yet another Blanche kick saw Morris beat the onrushing keeper to the ball but he looked agonisingly on as he saw his headed effort rebound off the upright. The second half was a real battle in the heavy conditions with Ponty replacing young Dodd at half time with Ross Hutchings. Troedyrhiw looked the more likely to snatch the game but the combination of some excellent keeping by Davies and some resolute defending by Captain Quinn and his team mates kept the home side at bay. Manager Preene gave young Matt James a run out in place of Blanche, hoping that his pace would catch out a tiring home defence but he wasn’t able to make much of an impact. Ponty had a few scares in the dying stages as Troedyrhiw pressed for the winner and three of four headed attempts either flashed over the crossbar or finished narrowly wide. In the end Ponty hung on for a deserved draw and can look forward with confidence to their next game away at West End (Swansea) on Saturday 20th Jan KO 2pm. Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 23 December 2006 Pontyclun FC 2 - 1 Merthyr Saints “Twas a reason to be jolly!” for Pontyclun and their long serving captain Barry Quinn, as his early goal helped secure a fine win in this pre-Christmas encounter at Ivor Park last Saturday. Quinn struck after fifteen minutes when he placed a precision header past the keeper from a free kick by Adrian James. There were few moments of excitement during a dour first half to warm up the supporters, on what was a bitterly cold day but Merthyr were starting to cause a few problems as half time approached. Home keeper Rhys Davies twice had to pull of smothering saves to prevent an equaliser but the ‘Clun went in for their half time cuppa one up. After the break it took the visitors fifteen minutes to draw level with a super strike from substitute Maru de Silva. A swift break down the left was halted by Quinn but the ball broke to de Silva on then edge of the penalty area and he lashed an unstoppable left foot shot high into the far corner, giving Davies no chance. For the next twenty minutes Merthyr were the better side and looked the more likely to go on and win the game. The Pontyclun defence were playing a risky high line and on more then one occasion were caught out by a long ball played over the top. Davies pulled off one excellent save to keep the score level and the visiting No. 9 should have scored but his chip over Davies finished narrowly wide. As so happens on occasions like this Pontyclun scored against the run of play and what a fine goal it was. The ball was fed through to Ryan Blanche on the edge of the penalty box. Blanche had his back to goal but somehow managed to manoeuvre himself a yard of space before he turned and fired a superb left foot shot over visiting keeper Jason Pendry for one of the ‘Cluns goals of the season. Ponty held on for the win and a vital three points as they now embark on a run of four away games on the trot at Caerau (Ely) on 30th Dec, Cardiff Corries on 6th Jan, Troedyrhiw on 13th Jan and West End on 20th Jan. Pontyclun FC is holding a fund raising “Car Wash” this coming Saturday 30th December from 9am till 1.00pm at Pontyclun Fire Station, Cowbridge Road, Pontyclun (approxx 400 mtrs from Leeke’s). All monies raised will go towards the building of the new pavilion/changing rooms planned for Ivor Park. Any donation in return for cleaning your car will be gratefully received. ANNOUNCEMENT - 11 DECEMBER 2006
Saturday 2 December 2006 Tredegar Town 1- 4 Pontyclun FC Pontyclun secured a comfortable victory from their trip to Tredegar on Saturday December 2nd. An unchanged ‘Clun got off to a dreadful start though as they conceded a penalty as early as the second minute. Elliot Davey was adjudged to have handled the ball when it was driven directly at him from a short distance giving him no chance to avoid contact and Town’s Sam Hartrey stepped up to comfortably place the resultant spot kick past Pontyclun keeper Rhys Davies. There then followed a rather scrappy period of play with the poor weather conditions not conducive to flowing football. Pontyclun equalised on 38 minutes courtesy of a well taken goal from young striker Andy Morris. Craig Williams fed Morris from a throw in and Morris turned and shot in one movement from a position only yards from the goal line and the ball looped over the home keeper to nestle into the far top corner of the net. The second half proved one way traffic as Pontyclun took hold of the game aided by a following wind. Ryan Blanche gave the visitors the lead from the spot after he was brought down by a clumsy challenge from a home defender but that was the last action seen by Blanche as he was immediately replaced by Ross Hutchings. The move proved to be an inspired one from manager Phil Preene as Hutchings proceeded to bag a brace of goals to emphasise Ponty’s superiority on the day. The first came courtesy of a powerful shot from the edge of the area and the second as a result of an easy tap in after the home keeper had missed a fly kick and Hutchings ran past him and guided the ball home. The match saw the welcome return to action of coach Adrian James following his six week absence, when he came on as a late substitute and his experience could prove vital when Ponty entertain league leaders Garw at Ivor Park on Saturday 9th December ko 2.00pm. This is followed by a trip to Ammanford on the 16th December and then Ponty host Merthyr Saints on the 23rd December. Pontyclun: Rhys Davies, Eliot Davey, Simon Payne, Craig Williams, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), John Rees, Carl Lewis, Ryan Blanche, Andy Morris, Geraint Williams. Subs: Ross Hutchins (rep Blanche 55), Adrian James (rep Lewis 65), Shaun Williams (rep Payne 75). Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 18 November 2006 Penrhiwceiber 2 - 1 Pontyclun “Gutted” was the word manager Phil Preene used whilst Captain Barry Quinn commented “If this was a boxing match, the Penrhiwceiber coach would have thrown in the towel”. Quite how Pontyclun returned pointless from their trip to the Cynon valley remains a mystery but that exactly what happened. From the off the visitors played the better football and were superior in all areas of the pitch. Ryan Blanche, Carl Lewis and Craig Williams controlled midfield whilst Quinn and Tyrone Pope looked secure at the back. Neither side created any real clear cut opportunities in the first half but it seemed only a matter of time before Pontyclun stamped their authority on the game with a goal. Striker Geraint Williams was dropping into deeper positions to pick up the ball and causing the ‘Ceiber defence all sorts of problems. On the half hour mark Lewis unleashed a tremendous effort from thirty yards which rebounded off the crossbar leaving home keeper Danny Field clawing at fresh air. As so often happens in these games when one side are so completely on top the home team took the lead right on the stroke of half time when a cross in from the right found ‘Ceiber midfielder Chris Keepings unmarked at the far post and his cross shot gave Rhys Davies no chance. From the start of the second half Pontyclun battered the ‘Ceiber defence but chance after chance went begging. Geraint Williams forced a wonder save from Field in the opening minute and a Blanche free kick was scrambled clear at the near post. Williams then threaded a great ball through to fellow striker Andy Morris but his effort was kicked off the line by a home defender. Preene reshuffled the pack with twenty minutes remaining when Ross Hutchings was brought on for Morris and John Rees swapped positions with Elliott Davey to bolster the midfield. Ten minutes later Pontyclun drew level after being awarded a penalty. Williams played in Hutchings for a one on one with Field and as the speedy front man rounded the keeper he was brought down. The vociferous home crowd were adamant that the offence took place outside the box and the ‘Ceiber coach was banished to the stand for his continued protestations. Blanche however remained cool to place an assured kick into the corner and set up a platform for Ponty to push for a winner. However much against the run of play it was the home side that snatched the points when poor marking from a throw in left Richard Veale in space on the edge of the Ponty area and he placed a firm shot past Davies. Davies then made an excellent save from a headed effort following a corner before Hutchings had a great opportunity to level matters but his effort was a poor one. So, no points for the ‘Clun but an excellent display amid difficult playing conditions where wind and rain battered the Glassbrook Field all afternoon. Next week Pontyclun entertain fellow ‘Cynon valley side Llwydcoed at Ivor Park ko 2pm. Pontyclun: Rhys Davies, Craig Williams, Jonathan Rees, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Simon Payne, Carl Lewis, Eliot Davey, Geraint Williams, Ryan Blanche, Andrew Morris. Subs: Ross Hutchins (for Morris 70 mins), Shaun Williams Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 4 November 2006 Treharris Athletic 0 - 3 Pontyclun Pontyclun continued their recent run of good form with a well deserved win at Treharris. Ponty were without Tyrone Pope and reshuffled their ranks playing Jonathan Rees alongside Captain Barry Quinn and Wayne Morgan in a back three and starting youngster Shaun Williams in a wing back berth. Ponty played the better football from the off but were restricted to two long range efforts in the opening twenty minutes. Firstly Simon Payne lashed a twenty five yarder into the side netting and then Geraint Williams sent another way over the crossbar. Ponty thought they had the lead when a clever free kick by Ryan Blanche sent Wayne Morgan clear down the left, Morgan’s low cross was met by Andy Morris, who netted from close range, but the celebrations were curtailed when the flag was raised for offside by Morris. However minutes later they took a legitimate lead after tremendous battling by Jonathan Rees resulted in a pass to Craig Williams, who scored from outside the box with a fine shot that gave the keeper no chance. Morris should have made it 2-0 on the half hour, missing with a great chance, but minutes later fellow striker Geraint Williams did double the lead when he received the ball from a throw in and ran 20 yards unchallenged to slot home into the corner. Ponty then suffered a blow when the classy Wayne Morgan pulled up with a torn hamstring whilst in full throttle and it looks as if he may be out for a number of weeks. Morgan was replaced by substitute Darren Webb and the score remained at 2-0 when the break came. Manager Phil Preene demanded more of the same after half time and his team did not disappoint. They remained on top throughout despite Treharris trying to kick their way back into the game with some rather robust and illegal challenges. The home side did muster one chance when their centre forward hit the top of the bar from a cross cum shot from the far right touchline but that apart, Ponty keeper Rhys Davies was a virtual spectator. James replaced the ineffective Morris with Ross Hutchings and shortly after secured all three points courtesy of another goal from Geraint Williams. The impressive Jonathan Rees played a ball through the Treharris defence and when the vain appeals for offside were turned down, Williams waltzed past home keeper Ryan Jones and placed the ball into the unguarded net. Substitute Hutchings could and should have made it four when put clean through but blasted his effort a yard wide of the post with seconds remaining. Outstanding on the day were Jonathan Rees, Morgan, until his early exit and Craig Williams in midfield with Williams just about edging the man of the match accolade. On their return to the Athletic club, the team were greeted with the news that their second string had beaten Bridgend Town seconds 2-0 with goals by Mathew James and Lee Dodd, son of ex Pontyclun stalwart Gary Dodd. Next week Ponty have a tough game at Garden Village, Gorseinon, ko 2pm. Pontyclun: Davies, Quinn, Morgan, Rees, Payne, S Williams, Lewis, C Williams, Blanche, Morris, G Williams. Subs: Webb, Hutchings. Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 28 October 2006 Pontyclun 2 - 1 Briton Ferry Pontyclun continued their fine recent run of form when securing a victory over Briton Ferry Athletic at Ivor Park in a MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two clash. Steady rain fell throughout and both teams struggled early on as the ball pinged around on the sodden surface, making control very difficult. Chances were at a premium in an evenly contested opening half hour with neither keeper being called on to make a save of any note. Pontyclun’s best move of the half saw Carl Lewis break down the right and his deep cross found Andy Morris lurking at the far post but Morris’ headed effort just cleared the crossbar. Minutes after that opportunity the hosts fell behind following a free kick conceded by Wayne Morgan. Ferry played an innocuous looking ball into the Ponty area but a poor clearance punch from keeper Rhys Davies resulted in the ball falling at the feet of Ferry’s Richard Howells who had no difficulty in helping it into an unguarded net. The goal was scored somewhat against the run of play and Pontyclun went into the break 1-0 down after having the better of the half. Manager Phil Preene’s half time talk certainly did the trick for the ‘Clun as they dominated after the break and it took them only five minutes or so to draw level. Carl Lewis had just sent a sizzler of a shot inches wide, when he was unselfishly put in on goal by Geraint Williams, who could have shot himself and Lewis gobbled up the chance to side foot past Ferry keeper Rhys Jones. With captain Barry Quinn expertly marshalling a solid defence alongside his “lieutenants” Pope and Morgan, Ponty pressed on for a winner. Ryan Blanche sent a screamer yards wide from all of 25 yards out before Pontyclun replaced striker Williams with Ross Hutchings. Within minutes of Hutchings coming on, he had an excellent chance to equalise after Simon Payne’s shot was blocked. The ball fell to pacey striker and after his first attempt was blocked by keeper Jones the ball rebounded to him and he really should have scored from the second opportunity. A great move down the left involving Payne and Blanche put John Rees in on goal but Jones pulled off another fine save. Pontyclun then sent on young Shaun Williams to replace an unhappy looking Carl Lewis who vented his frustration at being substituted. However minutes later Pontyclun got what proved to be the winner when excellent football carved open the Ferry defence, allowing Andy Morris to cross to the near post where Hutchings managed to turn the ball past Jones in the Ferry goal. This was the least Ponty deserved for their second half domination and the three points saw them climb out of the relegation zone. Ponty now face three away games on the trot starting with a visit to Treharris Athletic on Saturday 4 November, ko 2.00pm. Pontyclun: Davies, Pope, Morgan, Quinn, C Williams, Payne, Blanche, Rees, Lewis, G Williams, Morris Subs: Hutchings, S Williams. Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 21 October 2006 Caldicot Town 3 - 3 Pontyclun Pontyclun snatched a point at Caldicot Town with the aid of a last minute penalty. After an hours play, any sort of result for Ponty looked impossible as the home side swept into a 3-0 lead but the Clun lads kept their heads, continued to play good football and their reward was an excellent draw. Ponty welcomed back Tyrone Pope after missing the win over Bettws because of his participation in the Cardiff marathon and he took his place alongside Barry Quinn and Wayne Morgan at the heart of the defence. However the defensive unit was breached as early as the fourth minute when keeper Rhys Davies could only parry a shot and the ball fell to the feet of Caldicot’s Peter Little, who fired into the corner of the net. Ponty nearly equalised minutes later following a Ryan Blanche corner kick when the ball found Quinn on the six yard line, but his effort was blocked and the ball was finally cleared for another corner after ricocheting around the Caldicot goalmouth. The visitors created their best chance after good link up play between Blanche and Craig Williams put Geraint Williams through but his effort was rather weak and was comfortably dealt with by the home keeper. Ponty went 2-0 down on 40 minutes when Morgan conceded a penalty after a harsh decision by Pontypridd referee Craig Greenstock, who was not having the best of matches and Town’s David Lloyd gave Rhys Davies little chance from the spot. Ponty then ended the half well and created a series of chances with Both Craig and Geraint Williams having shots well saved and Andy Morris missing with a header that he really should have scored from. Caldicot started brightly after the break and went further in front on the hour when Ponty were carved open down their right hand side and a low cross in from Peter Little found Town’s Mark Williams sliding in on Davies’ goal. Davies managed to block his shot but the ball rebounded back off him and found the head of Williams and he somehow managed to find the net despite lying on the pitch after his first effort. The visitors were thrown a lifeline shortly after when Jonathan Rees headed in from a corner to make it 3-1 but Caldicot then had several half chances to extend their lead and as it transpired, they would rue the missed opportunities. Ponty boss Adrian James brought on subs Shaun Williams and Carl Lewis for Morris and Elliot Davey to add fresh legs to the effort but it took until the 90th minute to get a breakthrough when Geraint Williams prodded home at the near post following a good move down the left. With time fast running out and with only moments left, Craig Williams was brought down in the box and Ryan Blanche kept his cool and put the spot kick right in the corner of the net. So an excellent point and the first on their travels for the ‘Clun and hopefully a result which will help see them climb the table. Next week (Oct 29) the ‘Clun entertain Briton Ferry at Ivor Park before a run of three games away at Garden Village, Tredegar Town and Penrhiwceiber Rangers. Pontyclun: Davies, Pope, Quinn, Morgan, Payne, C Williams, Rees, Davey, Blanche, Morris, G Williams. Subs, S Williams, Lewis. Match report by Greg Lamerton
Saturday 14 October 2006 Pontyclun 2 - 0 Bettws FC Pontyclun finally secured their first win of the season with a hard fought win over Llynfi valley side Bettws FC at Ivor Park on Saturday. The home side welcomed back ex-skipper Wayne Morgan into the defence to play alongside John Rees and current captain Barry Quinn in a 3-5-2 formation which succeeded in the ‘Clun keeping a clean sheet for the first time this campaign. Goal chances were at a premium in an opening half that was fast and furious with challenges flying in from both teams and Ponty’s Ryan Blanche was booked for an over zealous challenge on 25 minutes. The visitors looked the more likely to break the deadlock particularly via their former Maesteg Park striker Richard Reddy and indeed it was Reddy that earned them a penalty five minutes before the break, after Quinn and Ashton Turner failed to clear in the area and as Reddy bore down on goal, he was bundled over. However Ponty keeper Rhys Davies pulled off a fine save low down to his left to keep the status quo. Morgan then became the second Ponty player to be cautioned for a trip on Reddy and the resultant free kick was the last action of the half. The second half started much as the first did with an odd chance here and there falling to home striker Geraint Williams and his opposite number Reddy but the chances were spurned. The ‘Clun were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position after the visiting keeper handled outside the area when thwarting Andy Morris and he was lucky not to have been sent off for the offence. Blanches’ effort though was comfortably saved and the match appeared to be heading for a goalless draw. Pontyclun introduced substitute Shaun Williams with twenty minutes left and it was Williams who added the bit of pace needed up front to unlock the Bettws defence. A good break down the right by Geraint Williams saw him play a great ball into Shaun Williams, who in turn squared the ball to his elder brother Craig and he struck a great shot in to the top corner to put the ‘Clun 1-0 up. Ponty battled to keep hold of their lead and Davey and goal scorer Williams were both booked for rash tackles. Ryan Blanche then had a fine effort saved before Ponty wrapped up the match with only minutes remaining. Morgan won the ball in his own half and passed to Shaun Williams. The youngster then went on a mazy run which took him past several Bettws defenders before he passed to Ryan Blanche who unleashed a stunning shot that gave the keeper no chance. So a great three points for the ‘Clun and a first clean sheet of the season and they will look for more of the same with a visit to Caldicot Town next up on Saturday 21st October. Saturday 18 March 2006 Troedyrhiw 4 - 2 Pontyclun Pontyclun’s three match unbeaten run as they were forced to send out an under-strength team at Troedyrhiw, who have an excellent home record. The ‘Clun were without first team regulars Tyrone Pope, Wayne Morgan, Gareth Morgan, John Ralph and Warren Green. Adam Wise made his debut for Pontyclun’s first team after performing well for the reserves this season. The game didn’t start well for Pontyclun with striker Adam Davies being forced off the field with a groin strain within the first 15 minutes to be replaced by Ross Hutchins. Troedyrhiw put Pontyclun under pressure in the opening 20 minutes with a strong wind at their backs and playing a very direct style of football, looked to make life difficult for the visitors. Troedyrhiw took the lead on 25 minutes when Owen McGill was allowed to sneak a shot in at the near post to give goalkeeper Ian Minton no chance and it was the first goal that Pontyclun had conceded in four games. Troedyrhiw had another chance when Tony Rees was allowed to continue his run from what looked like an offside position with Minton making the save. Pontyclun equalised after 30 minutes when John Rees played a perfect ball through to Ross Hutchins who outpaced his marker before slotting under the keeper to make it 1-1. Pontyclun were then hit by a sucker-punch when the home side regained the lead within four minutes of the restart with a great volley from 20 yards. Pontyclun almost hit back immediately when Geraint Williams rattled the crossbar from 30 yards with the keeper nowhere in sight. Then, ‘Clun captain Barry Quinn broke through midfield before getting a strike on goal which could only be parried by the home keeper at the near post and it looked certain that Pontyclun would score from the rebound but somehow the ball was eventually cleared. In midfield, Pontyclun’s Adrian James was enjoying a physical battle with opposite number Ceri Kinsey. Troedyrhiw managed to keep their lead up until the half time whistle. The second half started with Pontyclun taking control, using the wind which was now at their backs as they pinned Troedyrhiw back in their own half. On 55 minutes, Pontyclun levelled it up at 2-2 when Geraint Williams finished off a great run with a strike from the edge of the box which flew into the top corner. At this point, it looked as though Pontyclun would go on and win the game as they created numerous chances. Adrian James made a great break from midfield after being picked out by the influential Craig Williams, but as James got in on goal his shot rolled agonisingly wide. Then, as in the first half, Pontyclun were caught by breakaway from the home side when Owen McGill was allowed to run through midfield before guiding his shot past Minton to put Troedyrhiw 3-2 in front against the run of play. The game opened right up at this point with chances coming at both ends. Pontyclun thought they had won a penalty when Danny Thomas was unceremoniously taken down in the box, with the referee somehow waving play-on with the whole ground expecting a spot-kick. Then, as Pontyclun pressed Troedyrhiw broke out once more and managed to get a throw in near the corner flag. The ball was whipped over and McGill ghosted in front of Danny Thomas to volley home in style and complete his hat-trick. This should have wrapped the game up for the home side but back came Pontyclun with another period of pressure. Craig Williams went on a mazy run into the Troedyrhiw penalty area and was taken down after rounding the last defender. This time, the referee did award a penalty to Pontyclun, which was taken by Geraint Williams who saw his kick saved by the keeper and gave Troedyrhiw a real let-off. Unfortunately for Pontyclun, there was no further scoring and Troedyrhiw took the points after a major battle and the visitors left feeling they should have taken something from the game, even with a weakened side. Next Saturday, Pontyclun host Tredegar at the Ivor Park (2.30pm kick off) before travelling to face the same team away on Weds 29th March (7pm kick off). The Clun will be looking to gain good results in these fixtures to get them back on the climb up the table.
SATURDAY 11 MARCH 2006 PONTYCLUN 0 - 0 ENTO ABERAMAN Pontyclun had to be satisfied with a draw with the ENTO Aberaman, who are the division’s in-form side. Having being the only team to have beaten the visitors since November, Pontyclun went into the game looking to complete the double over second placed ENTO. The ‘Clun made a couple of changes to last weeks’ team which beat Porthcawl, with Pat Macdonald and Warren Green returning to the side. ENTO started the brighter of the two teams and put Pontyclun under pressure from the first whistle. They began to enjoy long spells of possession with Pontyclun seemingly content to sit and defend and look to exploit the visitors on the break. For all their first half possession, ENTO struggled to make the most of the territorial advantage. However, Pontyclun goalkeeper Ian Minton produced one stunning save from ENTO’s Daniel Mais. The only other moment of concern was when a speculative cross from ENTO’s Powell caught the wind and hit the crossbar, with Minton saving the follow-up attempt. At the other end, Pontyclun were denied what seemed a definite penalty when ENTO defender Ian French brought striker Adam Davies inside the box but the referee simply waved play on, much to everyone’s astonishment. The second half saw Pontyclun come out and seize the initiative, taking the game to the visitors. The ‘Clun pushed their defensive line higher up the pitch and let Adrian James, John Rees and Pat Macdonald take control of the midfield. Once again, Craig Williams was a great asset to Pontyclun, running opposite number Steve Powell into the ground. As the second half progressed, Pontyclun began to create chances with some excellent football. Adam Davies and Geraint Williams worked tirelessly up front and combined well to put Davies in with a chance on 65 minutes. He shrugged off the challenge of French and got himself clear but put his strike wide of the post, with the keeper to beat. Five minutes later, a diagonal ball from skipper Barry Quinn put Danny Thomas in space down the left flank, he then squared the ball to Davies who was inches from scoring what would have been a great goal. Pontyclun then had further chances to wrap the game up during the closing 20 minutes through Davies, John Rees and Williams. The only disappointment was that Pontyclun didn’t work the keeper hard enough, having got into great positions. On the plus side, it means that Pontyclun have now gone three games without conceding a goal and face a tough trip to Troedyrhiw next Saturday, kick off at 2.30pm. Pontyclun Team: Ian Minton, Craig Williams, Danny Thomas, Warren Green, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, Pat Macdonald, John Rees, Adam Davies, Geraint Williams Subs: Ross Hutchins (for Williams 75), Ryan Blanche, John Ralph
Saturday 4 March 2006 Porthcawl Town 0 - 2 Pontyclun Pontyclun continued their climb up the Division Two table with a comfortable win after a fiery encounter at Locks Lane, Porthcawl. The hosts are currently in the relegation places and fighting for their Division Two lives, whilst Pontyclun were looking to put more daylight between themselves and those at the bottom of the table. The Clun had to start without striker Geraint Williams, who was snowed-in at Newquay, West Wales. Ross Hutchins came back into the side after a lengthy absence, along with Wayne Morgan who started last week's game on the bench. Pontyclun set their stall out early in the game and dictated most of the play during the opening period with Porthcawl unable to make any impression on a determined ‘Clun side. Pontyclun’s main outlet was Craig Williams who caused major problems for Porthcawl all afternoon, his marker ex-Pontyclun player Derek James chasing shadows. The home side picked up a number of cautions as they resorted to foul play to stem the flow of Pontyclun attacks. When Porthcawl did try to clear their lines, they could not win any ball in the air against Pontyclun defensive unit of Quinn, Pope and Hill. The experienced Adrian James and Wayne Morgan were controlling the midfield along with the industrious young John Rees. The ‘Clun opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a well-rehearsed set-piece, Wayne Morgan’s corner finding its way to skipper Barry Quinn who stroked the ball home to put Pontyclun 1-0 up. Pontyclun then played some outstanding football for the remainder of the half, with Adam Davies causing severe headaches for the Porthcawl defence with his strength and movement. Chances followed as Pontyclun opened up the hosts time and again. Craig Williams went clean through only to be hauled down on the edge of the box. With the crowd expecting a red card for the Porthcawl defender, to their amazement the referee produced only a yellow. However, the were punished when from the resultant free-kick Wayne Morgan curled a left footed free-kick into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 to Pontyclun. At this point, it looked as though Pontyclun where going to run up a high score as Quinn headed narrowly over from another corner and Adam Davies having one cleared off the line. It remained at 2-0 when half-time arrived. The 2nd half was a controversial affair which sprang to life on 60 minutes when the referee let two successive dangerous tackles go and when the third two-footed came in on Morgan from Porthcawl’s centre-back, a fracas followed. In the melee, the referee dismissed Morgan of Pontyclun along with two Porthcawl players for their part. The game then became a strange one, with Pontyclun not in any danger of losing the game but not fully capitalizing on their advantage either. The ‘Clun created six or seven one-on-one’s with the Porthcawl keeper through John Ralph, Ross Hutchins and John Rees but amazingly still didn’t score. Then, when all the drama had settled down, Porthcawl were reduced to eight men for the final few minutes as their centre-back collected a second yellow for bringing down Craig Williams yet again and he was dismissed. Porthcawl managed to hold and survive without conceding any further goals before the final whistle, with Pontyclun leaving the field feeling like they should have racked up six or seven goals but satisfied with the vital three points. Next up, Pontyclun face some tough tests as they travel to Tredegar on Wednesday evening 8th March, followed by a home game against high-flying ENTO Aberaman on Saturday 11th March and then a trip to face Troedyrhiw on Saturday 18th March. Pontyclun Team: Ian Minton, Danny Thomas, Lance Hill, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, Craig Williams, Wayne Morgan, John Rees, Adam Davies, Ross Hutchins Subs: Ryan Blanche (for Thomas 75 mins), Ross Youlden (for Davies 65 mins), John Ralph (for Hutchins (78 mins)
Saturday 25 February 2006 Pontyclun 3 - 0 Ammanford Pontyclun gained a valuable home win against their West Walian visitors with a comprehensive performance at a very windy Ivor Park. The home side had to shuffle the pack with Wayne Morgan, Warren Green and Dean Lewis all unable to make the starting line-up. In came Marcus McCormack for his first team debut after impressing for the reserves, along with Danny Thomas and local youngster Jonathan Rees. The home side got off to the perfect start when Danny Thomas provided a great volleyed finish to a neat move involving Craig Williams, John Rees and McCormack, with barely two minutes on the clock. Ammanford had elected to play with the strong wind at their backs for the opening period but never really threatened to take advantage throughout a first half where Pontyclun were winning the lions share of challenges and putting together some good football. Pontyclun’s defensive unit of Barry Quinn, Tyrone Pope and Gareth Morgan were well on top of the Ammanford attackers, allowing the dangerous Craig Williams and Danny Thomas to get forward in support of the front runners Adam Davies and Geraint Williams. Adrian James was marshalling the midfield area very well but Ammanford did come close to scoring on occasions when they did brake forward with Fisher’s speculative shot catching on the wind and rebounding off the crossbar, away to safety. The second period saw Pontyclun come out of the blocks sharply and as in the first half, they scored within the opening two minutes, when Adam Davies chased down a massive clearance from goalkeeper Ian Minton, (who was excellent throughout the game) before heading home powerfully past the Ammanford keeper. The ‘Clun then enjoyed another dominant spell where they opened up the visitors time and again and it came as no surprise when Geraint Williams collected the third goal, rounding the keeper after another ‘assist’ from keeper Minton’s kick. This pretty much ended the game as a contest with Pontyclun firmly in the driving seat. Craig Williams was a constant thorn in Ammanford’s side with some excellent attacking play. Special mention must go to Jonathan Rees and Marcus McCormack who are both relatively inexperienced at this level and looked very comfortable in the Pontyclun midfield. Next Saturday (4th March), Pontyclun travel to face a Porthcawl side who are battling relegation and Pontyclun looking to put further daylight between themselves and the relegation places. This is followed by a midweek trip to play Tredegar Town away on Wed 8th March. Pontyclun Team: Ian Minton, Gareth Morgan, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (Capt.), Danny Thomas, Craig Williams, Jonathan Rees, Adrian James, Marcus McCormack, Adam Davies, Geraint Williams Subs: Ryan Blanche (for McCormack 70 mins), Wayne Morgan (for Thomas 80 mins), Gavin Thomas Report by Paul Cale
SATURDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2005 ENTO ABERAMAN 0 - 1 PONTYCLUN Pontyclun returned to league action at the weekend as they looked to climb the table in Welsh League Division Two. There were a few absentees from last weeks’ game at Newtown. John Ralph, Toan Ravenscroft, Eliot Davey and Warren Green all unavailable. This didn’t prevent Pontyclun from taking the points as they put in a determined display against fourth placed Aberaman. ENTO started brightly and a good run by Steve Powell was brought to an end with a tackle from Pontyclun's captain Barry Quinn. Pontyclun had a break themselves then through Craig Williams who released Geraint Williams who was challenged by keeper Neil Collins. At the other end ENTO were awarded a corner that saw keeper Rhys Davies drop the ball and somehow the ball was cleared off the line by a relieved Pontyclun defence. David Avery then played a neat ball into Geraint Williams who saw his shot go just over the bar. Ian French released Powell on the left who played a great ball in that was cleared by Quinn. Steve Pugh played the ball back in but this time it was Tyrone Pope who cleared under pressure from Will Davies. At the other end Martin Edwards put a fine challenge in on David Avery. In the fifteenth minute Pontyclun broke quickly and Pugh had to be alert to clear the danger for a corner. Craig Hewings cleared the danger from the corner after a great ball from Pope. In the 18th minute after another corner, this time from Adrian James Pontyclun made the breakthrough, a knock-down by Quinn being met by Pope to make no mistake with his finish to make it 1-0. Minutes later Edwards had to be alert on the edge of the area. On the half hour mark Pontyclun broke again and with ENTOs defence static Ross Hutchins saw his effort go just over. At the other end Quinn cleared well from Davies. Sub Ryan Woods was looking lively on the right hand side. Hewings then played a great ball in that Daniel Mais hit wide. Geraint Williams then had a great chance but he shot weakly at Neil Collins. ENTO started the second half brightly and a great ball from Woods found Dawes who saw his effort cleared by Gareth Morgan. It was then the turn of Wayne Morgan who went on a great run before being upended by Woods. Geraint Williams then had a decent chance that was cleared by Pugh, before Powell and Mais combined well to release Davies before the ball was cleared by Quinn. On the hour mark Grant Thomas laid off French who blasted his shot from 20 yards that keeper Davies did well to get a finger tip to put it over the bar. ENTO had the majority of possession but Pontyclun still managed to carve out the best chances of the game. ENTO sub Chris Stentiford combined well with Davies before Pugh's shot was well saved. Edwards broke from his own half and combined well with Woods before Adrian James cleared. French then played a great ball in that was cleared for a corner, before Powell crossed in but again there was no-one in the centre. Dawes and Stentiford combined well before Gareth Morgan cleared. With five minutes left Pontyclun broke and a superb turn and strike by Geraint Williams was tipped round the far post by the outstretched Collins when it looked a certain goal. A good three points to Pontyclun, who will surely begin to climb the table now that their Welsh Cup run has ended and they can concentrate full on league matters. Next up for Pontyclun is a home fixture on Saturday November 19th against Troedyrhiw, who have started the season well so far (kick off 2pm). Pontyclun Team: Rhys Davies, Gareth Morgan, Wayne Morgan, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, Craig Williams, James Russell, David Avery, Geraint Williams, Ross Hutchins Subs: Chris Round (for Avery 70 mins), Pat Macdonald (for James 78 mins), David Lewis Report by Paul Cale
Saturday 15 October 2005 Pontyclun 1 Morriston Town 2 Pontyclun slipped up with a disappointing defeat to Morriston Town, who are becoming something of a bogey side to the Clun. After three successive cup wins, Pontyclun went into the match full of confidence after defeating Division One high flyers Maesteg Park in their last fixture. However, the Clun failed to get out of first gear during a frustrating game against very ordinary opposition in Morriston. The opening period was played out in a somewhat scrappy manner, with neither team keeping possession for any length of time. Morriston took the lead in controversial fashion when the teenage linesman failed to raise his flag when two Morriston players were clearly in offside positions, allowing them to run through on goal and Pontyclun keeper Rhys Davies did brilliantly to deflect the ball away for a corner, with Pontyclun protesting to the referee. To rub salt into the wound, Morriston took the lead from the resulting corner after a clearance was missed, allowing Michael Chapman to guide a shot into the corner of the net. The response from Pontyclun was immediate and they forced a number of corners and free kicks and almost levelled it when Adrian James’ corner found its way through the crowd to Barry Quinn, who saw his shot go wide of the target. Two minutes later, the Clun really should have levelled matters when David Avery found himself a couple of yards out with the goalkeeper already grounded but somehow his touch took him wide of the far post with the goal gaping. Pontyclun took an ear-bashing from management team Alan Jacka and Phil Preene at the half time interval for a below-par performance. Whatever was said seemed to do the trick as Pontyclun came out at the start of the second half and levelled the match within two minutes, when a lovely move saw Wayne Morgan deliver an inviting cross to the near post, where Craig Williams lashed home a sweet volley into the roof of the net to make it 1-1. This should have been the kick-start that Pontyclun needed but however, fate seemed to be against them when on 50 minutes, a dubious free kick was awarded to Morriston for a challenge by Avery on Chapman. The free kick was half cleared by Pontyclun to the edge of the box where Jamie Lydiard produced a great strike to volley home into the corner, through a ruck of players. This was a devastating blow for the Clun, having just battled their way back into the game. Pontyclun responded by taking the game to the visitors once again but too often there was no end product as the home side seemed to be lacking a cutting edge up front. As the game progressed, Pontyclun introduced John Ralph, who made an impression with some darting runs. The closest Pontyclun came to an equaliser was on 82 minutes when skipper Barry Quinn headed powerfully towards the top corner only to see Morriston’s keeper parry the ball away at full stretch. On 90 minutes, Pontyclun had another chance when Adrian James’ half volley ended up going straight at the keeper and the Clun realised their luck was out as there were no further goals as Morriston left with the points when probably a draw would have been a fair result. Next Saturday (22nd), Pontyclun return to cup action when they travel to Gorseinon to play Garden Village in the 2nd Round of the Shamrock Travel Welsh League Cup, kick off at 2pm. Pontyclun Team: Rhys Davies, Gareth Morgan, Tyrone Pope, Wayne Morgan, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, David Avery, Toan Ravenscroft, Craig Williams, James Russell, Ross Hutchins Subs: John Ralph (for Avery 68 mins), Ross Youlden (for Pope 65 mins), Huw Neale (for Hutchins 70 mins) Report by Paul Cale
Saturday 24 September 2005 Porthcawl Town 1 Pontyclun 2 (aet) (1-1 after 90 mins) Shamrock Travel League Cup, Round One Pontyclun won their second consecutive cup game after the Welsh Cup win over AFC Porth a fortnight ago, this time taking on Second Division rivals Porthcawl Town in Rest Bay. Goalkeeper Rhys Davies made a return to the side after injury, along with Craig Roberts, Gareth Morgan, James Russell and David Avery. This was to be a game where Pontyclun controlled for long periods and should have put the result beyond doubt during the first half. However, there was drama to unfold as in all good cup matches. The best chance of the opening half fell to James Russell when Avery clipped the ball to the back post where somehow the ball ended up rebounding into the keepers arms when a goal seemed certain. Avery himself had a good chance after being played in by Craig Williams but got the ball caught up in his feet when it looked odds-on he would score in the 17th minute. Craig Roberts also had a chance on 25 minutes when he delayed his shot and a defender managed to take the sting out of the strike. Defensively, Pontyclun looked solid throughout and were given their first real test when Porthcawl enjoyed their best spell of the game. During this 15 minute period, Pontyclun seemed to allow the hosts to attack and defend deep and Porthcawl forced keeper Rhys Davies to make a good save from a chipped effort from Jason Bekker. When the half time whistle arrived the game was still goal-less. The second period was when the goals arrived and somewhat against the run of play, Porthcawl opened the scoring after a corner was initially cleared, possession was then lost by Pontyclun and the ball found its way through to the unmarked Porthcawl midfielder who slotted home from close range. Pontyclun reacted immediately and took the game to Porthcawl with Roberts causing them particular problems. On 67 minutes, Pontyclun levelled matters when Roberts was brought down in the area when through on goal. He duly dusted himself down before drilling home the spot-kick. From this point onwards it seemed only a matter of time before Pontyclun went on and won the game as Porthcawl offered very little going forward. One attack the hosts did mount was halted by a crunching tackle by skipper Barry Quinn on striker Duffy taking man and ball to clear the danger. Sub John Ralph had an impact after coming off the bench for the ‘Clun, making several good runs and almost scored the winner on 82 minutes. The tie eventually went to extra-time and Pontyclun sub Matthew Parker could have wrapped up the victory with three chances in quick succession but they slipped away. The second period of extra time was when the most action arrived with Parker getting the final touch to an Adrian James corner, the ball hit the back of the net and was then punched away by a defender and as Pontyclun celebrated the goal, the referee unbelievably waved play on and booked Williams for his protest. This was astonishing to everyone in the ground who could not quite believe what they had seen. The winner did arrive however for Pontyclun on 115 minutes, when again Porthcawl gave away a penalty when Craig Williams was brought down after beating his man. Roberts stepped up for the second time and dispatched the spot-kick to seal a deserved win for Pontyclun, although the feeling was that the margin of victory should have been greater and wrapped up in normal time. Next Saturday (1st October), Pontyclun face a tough match when they host unbeaten First Division big spenders Maesteg Park in the Second Round of the FAW Welsh Cup, kick off at 2.30pm at Ivor Park. Pontyclun: Rhys Davies, Gareth Morgan, Tyrone Pope, Wayne Morgan, Barry Quinn, Adrian James, David Avery, James Russell, Geraint Pitt, Craig Williams, Craig Roberts Subs: Huw Neale (for Pitt 70 mins), John Ralph (for Avery 72 mins), Matthew Parker (for Russell 75 mins) Report by Paul Cale
Saturday 10 September 2005 AFC Porth 0 - 1 Pontyclun FAW Welsh Cup, Round One Pontyclun progressed into the second round of the FAW Welsh Cup at the expense of AFC Rhondda after claiming a 1-0 win at Dinas Park. The ‘Clun were forced to make a few changes going into this game, with Wayne Morgan, Phil Watson, Gavin Thomas and Ross Youlden returning to the side, with David Avery, Gareth Morgan, Ross Hutchins, James Russell, Gavin Rees and Toan Ravenscroft all unavailable. The opening half saw Pontyclun look very comfortable against their third division opponents without really taking advantage in and around the Porth penalty area. Phil Watson went close with a long range effort which had the keeper scrambling backwards and narrowly drifted wide. Then, after 27 minutes, Tyrone Pope got his head to an Adrian James corner and saw his effort shave the crossbar. Craig Williams began to find space as the half progressed and looked a threat with the ball at his feet. The half time whistle blew with Pontyclun a little disappointed at not going into the break with a lead. The second half saw Pontyclun introducing all three substitutes in an effort to liven up proceedings and Gavin Thomas leaving the field with a dislocated shoulder. Youlden went close to opening the scoring after an Eliot Davey corner, with the Porth keeper rushing out to block his effort at close range. Porth also had a chance when, Lee Brown flicked on and as the visitors appealed for offside, Porth wasted the chance, poking the ball wide as keeper Whitelam came to close the angle. Pontyclun then opened up their hosts with a lovely move down the left, involving Wayne Morgan, who played in John Ralph who cut in and looked set to shoot but cut the ball back to Williams, who delayed his shot and eventually saw the chance disappear. As the second half developed it looked increasingly likely that Pontyclun would make the breakthrough via a set-piece as home centre back Lever seemed to lose his cool and give away a number of free kicks. Eventually, the goal arrived on 86 minutes, when Lever was out muscled by Pontyclun captain Barry Quinn after a Shaun Thomas through ball and gave away a corner. From the corner, Adrian James took it short to Wayne Morgan, who delivered a lovely cross, which was met by a thumping header from Eliot Davey which gave the keeper no chance. The closing few minutes saw Porth throw bodies forward in search of an equaliser and they did create a half chance when a long ball into the box created a scramble and as Porth’s Lee Brown looked set to shoot, Quinn was able to get a tackle in and clear the danger. This was to be the last chance of the game as Pontyclun closed the game out and claimed the win to take them through to the second round of this lucrative cup competition. Pontyclun’s next game is on 24 September, when they will play at Porthcawl Town in round one of the Shamrock Travel League Cup. Check out Pontyclun’s website at www.freewebs.com/pontyclunfootballclub for details of round two of the FAW Welsh Cup as soon as the draw is made. Pontyclun Team: Barry Whitlelam, Phil Watson, Wayne Morgan, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, Gavin Thomas, Eliot Davey, Huw Neale, Craig Williams, Ross Youlden Subs: Shaun Thomas (for Neale 72 mins), John Ralph (for Youlden 72 mins), Geraint Pitt (for Thomas 60 mins) Report by Paul Cale
Friday 2 September 2005 Pontypridd 1 - 0 Pontyclun Pontyclun narrowly lost out to big-spending local rivals Pontypridd for the first time in six years on this Friday night fixture at Ynysangharad Park. On reflection, Pontclun will feel that they should have at least got a draw from the game in what was a hard-fought local derby. Pontyclun recalled keeper Barry Whitlelam after Rhys Davies sustained an arm injury in last weeks draw with Caldicot. Also, returning to the away side were Eliot Davey and Toan Ravenscroft. The Clun were forced to make an early substitution when Ross Hutchins pulled up with a hamstring injury with the game barely two minutes old, with James Russell replacing him. As expected, this game was a keenly contested affair with some physical early exchanges bringing about an early flurry of yellow cards as the game threatened to boil over. Pontypridd tried to exert some early pressure on Pontyclun but found the visitors’ defence a tough nut to crack. Pontyclun looked to counter attack down the flanks, with David Avery causing major problems with his pace and trickery. Also, strikers Craig Williams and James Russell gave the home defenders plenty to think about and gave centre back Mike Jones in particular real distress. The first 25 minutes of the game was being fought out in the middle third of the field and the referee issued several cautions for late challenges during this time. The opening goal arrived when Tyrone Pope was penalised for a foul out wide on the touchline and Kerry Harding whipped in a free-kick which was met by Jones’ header to give Pontypridd the lead. The defence had committed too many players into the wall and not left enough markers in the box, allowing Jones to get free. This was to be Harding’s last contribution though, as he was dismissed minutes later for kicking out after a challenge with Craig Williams. The referee had no alternative but to send Harding from the field. Pontypridd then enjoyed a large slice of good fortune when James Russell outpaced Pontypridd’s Mike Jones and robbed him off the ball to get in on goal, only to be denied by the referee's whistle for a foul which mystified everyone on the gound. This proved to be the last goalmouth incident of the first half. The second period saw Pontyclun looking to make the extra man advantage count as Pontypridd looked to tighten up. Eliot Davey swung in a couple of free kicks into the danger zone, with firstly Pontyclun captain Barry Quinn, then Tyrone Pope inches away from glancing the ball home. Pontypridd still looked lively on the break and fizzed two balls across the six yard box, from one of which Liam Grant should have scored. With Pontyclun having more of the play, they still didn’t manage to open Pontypridd up as often as they liked, however the commitment levels shown by the 'Clun were fantastic, who won virtually all the 50/50 balls available. Pontyclun’s midfield duo of Adrian James and Toan Ravenscroft were out muscling opposite numbers Dean Morris and Andrew Hughes, allowing John Ralph and Gavin Thomas to get forward and support the front runners. The last real big chance of the game came on 88 minutes when Craig Williams collected an Eliot Davey through ball and hit a great strike from an acute angle, which was tipped away at full stretch onto the post by ex Pontyclun keeper Mark Poole. Pontypridd held out for the narrow win and finally got a win over Pontyclun, after six years of trying and a rather hefty wage bill to boot. Pontyclun Manager Phil Preene said ‘I think we were good enough for a draw on the balance of the game but probably should have created more in the way of chances after they went don to ten men. I’ve got every confidence in my players, who would run through brick walls for this club and Pontypridd had to work extremely hard to get anything out of this game’ Next Saturday, 10th September, Pontyclun have another local derby when they travel to AFC Porth for the First Round of the FAW Welsh Cup, kick off 2.30pm Pontyclun: Barry Whitelam, Gareth Morgan, Eliot Davey, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, Toan Ravenscroft, David Avery, Huw Neal, Craig Williams, Ross Hutchins Subs: James Russell (for Hutchins 2 mins), John Ralph (for Avery 70 mins), Gavin Thomas (for Neal 80 mins) Report by Paul Cale
Saturday 27 August 2005 Pontyclun 1 - 1 CaldicotPontyclun picked up a point in this match against early-season pacesetters Caldicot Town. Once again, Pontyclun shuffled the pack, with Tyrone Pope, Ross Hutchins, Gavin Thomas and captain Barry Quinn returning to the side, in addition to David Avery who was making his Welsh League debut for the home side. Caldicot had the better of the opening exchanges, with Pontyclun having to defend deep for the opening 20 minutes. The visitors took the lead in strange circumstances when they were awarded a free-kick 35 yards out wide on their right flank, after an off the ball incident involving Wayne Morgan and Gareth Cullimore of Caldicot. As the players lined up in the box for the ball to be delivered, they could only look on in shock as the ball was sliced off the outside of the boot and sailed over the head of keeper Rhys Davies and into the back of the net to give Caldicot a very fortunate lead. Davies was again called into action, making two outstanding saves, as Caldicot looked to add to their tally. Gradually, Pontyclun began to work their way back into the game and created several openings of their own when Barry Quinn’s header somehow stayed out after Avery’s corner as Caldicot managed to scramble the ball off the line and away to safety. Half time score Pontyclun 0 Caldicot 1 The second half saw Pontyclun dictate the game for longer periods, suddenly the commitment levels and drive seemed to be there from the home team as they put Caldicot under pressure for an equaliser. Pontyclun managed to get in behind the visiting defence far more often through Avery’s pace, with Craig Williams also causing major headaches to the Caldicot defence. Huw Neale also provided an outlet down the right wing for Pontyclun. The ‘Clun’ came close to getting their equaliser on a couple of occasions before it eventually arrived on 72 minutes, after a great flowing move which started with the ball being knocked around the back four, before eventually ending up at the feet of Craig Williams, who riding two desperate challenges before planting a lovely left footed drive into the corner to make it 1-1. Credit must go to the referee for playing a good advantage during the build-up as Williams was fouled but managed to play-on. At this point, Pontyclun looked favourites to go and win the game, as they forced several corners and free kicks in promising situations. The introduction of Phil Watson and John Ralph gave Pontyclun fresh impetus, with Watson making several good challenges and Ralph causing major problems with his pace wide on the left. Caldicot were restricted to breakaways at this point. Once again, the Clun went close when Barry Quinn met Adrian James’ corner with a looping header which tested the keeper. The game ended in a draw, which was probably a fair result as both sides enjoyed dominant spells during the game. Next up for Pontyclun is an eagerly-awaited trip to big-spending local rivals Pontypridd on Friday Sept 2nd, with a 7pm kick off at Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd. Then, on Saturday Sept 10th, Pontyclun face another local derby, this time to away to AFC Porth in the 1st round of the Welsh Cup, kick off 2.30pm. Pontyclun: Rhys Davies, Gareth Morgan, Wayne Morgan, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn, David Avery, Adrian James, Gavin Thomas, Huw Neale, Ross Hutchins, Craig Williams. Subs: Phil Watson (for Thomas 65 mins), John Ralph (for Avery 63) mins, Eliot Davey. Report by Paul Cale
TUESDAY 9 AUGUST 2005 PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY RESULT Pontyclun 2 - Bridgend Town 0 Scorer: Ryan Hill 2 Information supplied by Barry Quinn, Pontyclun FC
WEDNESDAY 13 APRIL 2005 Pontyclun 3 – 0 ENTO Aberaman Pontyclun made it three clean sheets in a row after this solid midweek display against Aberaman. The home side went into the match looking to overturn a defeat suffered in the away fixture which was probably Pontyclun’s worst display of the season. The ‘Clun players responded in exactly the right manner and dominated the game from start to finish. Once again, changes had to be made to the Clun’s line-up, with Craig Roberts, Gareth Morgan, Gavin Rees and Eliot Davey all returning to the fold. Pontyclun started the game at a high tempo and Aberaman seemed unable to cope, with Pontyclun’s front runners of Craig Roberts and Ross Youlden proving a handful throughout. The home side were cutting Aberaman apart at will and it was no surprise when Chris Round opened the scoring with a fine finish following a quick throw-in from Phil Watson, who was outstanding throughout. Craig Williams then went close when his strike went just over the bar. The next goal arrived on 30 mins, when Watson was fouled out wide as he prepared to cross. Eliot Davey swung a dangerous free-kick towards the far post, which eluded everyone and bent into the back of the net to make it 2-0 to Pontyclun. Davey almost his doubled his tally within two minutes when his strike from 25 yards dipped narrowly wide. The next chance arrived when Ross Youlden’s effort forced a save from Aberaman keeper David Morgan. On 38 mins, Pontyclun made it 3-0 when Phil Watson took a long throw into the box and Craig Roberts glanced a neat header past the keeper to collect a goal that his efforts deserved. Half Time Score – Pontyclun 3 Aberaman 0 The second half continued in much the same fashion with Pontyclun dictating the pace of the game and Aberaman rarely threatening keeper Mark Poole’s goal. Wayne Morgan and Chris Round combined to good effect down Pontyclun’s left flank on several occasions to open up the Aberaman defence as the visitors tried to get back into the game. When Aberaman did occasionally break away, they found Pontyclun’s centre backs Gavin Rees and Tyrone Pope in no mood to give an inch. Craig Roberts went close to adding a fourth for the ‘Clun when a neat move down the right saw Gareth Morgan and Craig Williams combine to release Ross Youlden who crossed for Roberts, who slid in but was stretching too much and pushed his shot narrowly wide. On 61 minutes, Tyrone Pope saw his header well saved by Morgan in the Aberaman goal. Aberaman then enjoyed a short spell of pressure, forcing a few corners in succession but were unable to capitalise. Further half chances followed for Chris Rounds and Youlden but there was no further scoring and the game ended at 3-0 to Pontyclun and in truth, the margin of victory could have been greater than the scoreline suggests. Pontyclun will hope to carry this form into their next couple of games against high flying opposition, starting with a home game against Bryntirion on Sat 16th April, (3pm kick-off), followed by an away game to Tredegar on Weds 20th April (7.30pm kick-off). Pontyclun: Mark Poole, Gareth Morgan, Tyrone Pope, Gavin Rees, Wayne Morgan, Chris Round, Phil Watson, Eliot Davey, Craig Williams, Ross Youlden, Craig Roberts
SATURDAY 5 FEBRUARY 2005 Pontyclun 3 - 0 Seven Sisters
Pontyclun came into this game with bottom of the league Seven Sisters in a
must win situation if they were to have any chance of getting in touch
with the promotion chasers. There were a few changes to the Pontyclun side
after Ross Hutchins and Phil Watson picked up knocks the previous weekend
with Craig Roberts returning up front to partner Matthew Cook, Ross
Youlden stepping in at right back and Eliot Davey moving into the centre
of midfield to make way for Wayne Morgan returning to the team after
injury on the left hand side of midfield.
Then on the stroke of half time Roberts did finish in style when, after a
defence splitting ball by Adrian James let in Wayne Morgan down the left
flank, his pace did the work and a near post cross was delicately
deflected in by the striker. Seven Sisters had to throw everything at the home side from this point if they were to have any chance of salvaging anything. The game however was put in no doubt when the over enthusiasm of the visitors Nigel Westall got him into trouble and during the handbags that ensued he appeared to head butt Davey and the referee was left with no choice but to send the player off.
The game then descended into an
afternoon stroll for the home side who were happy to hear the final
whistle and concentrate on the games ahead. Report by Paul Cale
SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 2005 Cardiff Corries 2 - 1 Pontyclun Pontyclun dropped three vital points to lowly Cardiff Corries after a lacklustre performance in Radyr. This was a game where Pontyclun were expected to come away with a victory but their hopes slipped away in the mudbath of a pitch which made flowing football very difficult. Pontyclun welcomed back Eliot Davey and Tyrone Pope into the starting line-up for this fixture. The opening 30 minutes of a scrappy game was not much of a spectacle for either set of fans. The Corries opened the scoring after catching Pontyclun on the break, with their striker scuffed home a shot from eight yards with the ball almost stopping in the mud on its way to the net. Pontyclun stepped their game up at this point and took control for the remainder of the first half. First, John Ralph was bowled over in the penalty area when controlling the ball but the referee waved play-on to the amazement of the Pontyclun contingent. Then, in the 37th minute, Craig Williams was up-ended in the area after a mazy run which saw no fewer then 3 fouls during the build-up. Once again, Pontyclun were left flabbergasted as the referee seemed to be the only person in the ground who did not see any offence and waved away the vocal penalty appeals. Matthew Cook then shaved the post for Pontyclun when he brought down a raking pass from Quinn and drove it goalwards but the ball rolled away to safety. You sensed at this moment that it may not be Pontyclun’s day, with the Corries riding their luck to say the least. The home side managed to get to half time without conceding after surviving a barrage from Pontyclun. The second half saw the pitch deteriorate even further as it resembled a gluepot and became farcical. As Pontyclun pushed for an equaliser, they were once again hit on the break as Corries scored from a scramble after the initial effort had been cleared by Barry Quinn. Pontyclun were now in no doubt as to the task ahead and once again seemed to take control and put the hosts under pressure. Ross Hutchins and Craig Williams both saw opportunities lost after losing their footing in the mud when about to shoot. Williams was once again upended on the edge of the box in the 78th minute. Pontyclun striker Matthew Cook stepped up and curled home a beauty of a free-kick to make it 2-1. The Clun then pressed and pressed for a deserved equaliser but were unable to add to their tally and slipped to a rather dismal defeat. Pontyclun's management duo Alan Jacka and Phil Preene were furious with their players and gave them a serious dressing down in the changing rooms as they had lost to a side who they would normally beat comfortably. Next Saturday 29th Jan, Pontyclun host Penrhiwceiber at the Ivor Park, kick off at 2.15pm and will need a dramatically improved performance to complete the double over the Cynon Valley side. Pontyclun: Mark Poole, Phil Watson, Eliot Davey, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, Pat Macdonald, Craig Williams, John Ralph, Matthew Cook, Ross Hutchins. Subs: David Lewis, Ross Youlden (for Macdonald 75 mins), Lance Hill. Report by Paul Cale
SATURDAY 15 JANUARY 2005 Pontyclun 3 - 1 Merthyr Saints Pontyclun continued their good start to 2005 with another home win against Merthyr Saints, coming after last weeks' victory over Pontypridd. Pontyclun made a couple of changes as David Lewis and Pat Mcdonald were brought into the starting line-up. The match was played in heavy conditions after an overnight downpour. The Clun went on the offensive from the off as they knocked the ball around well. Ross Hutchins gave Pontyclun the lead after 18 minutes when he spotted the Merthyr keeper off his line and scored with a great chip from 25 yards. Merthyr looked dangerous on the break and grabbed an equaliser in the 27th minute when Pontyclun's defence backed off and Merthyr's pacy striker scored with a low strike from 25 yards to level the scores. Merthyr then had two decent chances to take the lead with Pontyclun keeper Mark Poole making two fine saves to keep the scores level. It was Pontyclun who took the lead on 33 minutes when a great move involving Craig Williams, Gavin Thomas and John Ralph culminated in Phil Watson's strike being saved by the Merthyr keeper, only for the ball to rebound to Hutchins who guided the ball home from 12 yards to make it 2-1 to the Clun at half time. Merthyr started the second half strongly and enjoyed a lot of territorial advantage, with Pontyclun happy to defend deep in their own half. On the occasions that Merthyr did break through, captain Barry Quinn and Pat Mcdonald were both on hand to make great last-ditch tackles. The defensive effort was helped by full backs David Lewis and Phil Watson, together with keeper Poole who once again made some smart saves. As Merthyr pressed for an equaliser Pontyclun looked to hit the visitors on the break and they did it to good effect when Craig Williams and Matthew Cook went close to increasing the lead. Pontyclun made the game safe in the 78th minute when Ross Hutchins completed his hat-trick when his speculative effort from out wide sailed over the keeper and into the top corner of the net, making it 3-1 to Pontyclun. That was to be the final scoreline as the Clun closed the game out for a gritty three points when they hadn't performed to their full potential. Next Saturday, Pontyclun travel to Radyr to face Cardiff Corries with kick off at 2.15 pm. Pontyclun Team: Mark Poole, Phil Watson, David Lewis, Pat Mcdonald, Barry Quinn (capt), Adrian James, Gavin Thomas, Craig Williams, John Ralph, Matthew Cook, Ross Hutchins Subs: Ross Youlden (rep Williams 75 mins), Wayne Morgan, Lance Hill Report by Paul Cale
SATURDAY 8 JANUARY 2005 Pontyclun 5 - 1 Pontypridd Town Pontyclun kicked off 2005 in fine style by thrashing local rivals Pontypridd Town by 5 goals to 1 at the Ivor Park, completing the seasonal double over their neighbours in the process. Pontyclun included Ross Hutchins and veteran defender Lance Hill as the only changes from their last game against Pontardawe. This fixture is always eagerly awaited and the big crowd were treated to thrilling game, as Pontyclun stretched their unbeaten run against Pontypridd to five and a half years. Pontypridd started the more brightly of the two teams in the opening 20 minutes, with Pontyclun showings signs of rustiness, having been without a fixture for three weeks. Pontypridd struck first in a game played in difficult conditions when Lee Bridgeman popped up in the box to get on the end of a free-kick, heading home past home keeper Mark Poole. Pontypridd continued to cause problems as the Clun struggled to find any fluency, with the pacy Kerry Harding breaking through the Pontyclun defence before Pontyclun captain Barry Quinn got back to dispossess him on both occasions. Goalkeeper Mark Poole was also forced to make a great close-range save from Bridgeman, palming his shot over the bar. The game was now end to end as Pontyclun battled back. On 30 minutes, Pontyclun cut through the visitors defence before Eliot Davey picked out Craig Williams’ run, who scored with a great strike from 20 yards to make it 1-1. From this point onwards, Pontyclun seemed to lift up a gear and took control of the match. On 38 minutes, Ross Hutchins burst onto a Gavin Williams through-ball, before being cynically taken out by last defender Stacey Fulker, who was promptly shown the red-card. Pontypridd saw the half out and the teams went into the interval level at 1-1. The second half was a lively affair, with Pontypridd altering their shape as they were down ten men and Pontyclun looking to exploit their advantage. The visitors went close to scoring when John Ralph cleared a header off the line. On 55 minutes, Pontyclun put together another sweeping move, as Adrian James played in Matthew Cook, who was eventually brought down in the box by Ian French. Cook got up, dusted himself down and despatched the resulting penalty with some aplomb to put Pontyclun 2-1 ahead. Pontyclun’s midfield began to run riot as John Ralph caused mayhem down the left wing as did Craig Williams on Pontyclun’s right. The next goal wasn’t long in coming, as Ross Hutchins scored from close range after Pontypridd keeper Collins had done well to parry Cook’s shot, making it 3-1. Pontypridd were now being restricted to occasional breakaways, as they looked to Harding’s pace. The next goal arrived on 75 minutes, when after constant pressure the Pontypridd defence caved in once more, as Hutchins scored his second with a great finish, putting Pontyclun 4-1 up. At this point, Pontyclun were totally dominant all over the park, with Adrian James and Pat McDonald orchestrating the midfield. Some of Pontypridd’s tacking became increasingly desperate but Pontyclun showed great discipline in not reacting. Pontyclun were to get their reward for the discipline when Lance Hill scored with a downward header from Adrian James’ corner kick, sending the home fans into raptures. Cries of ‘We want Six’ were now being chanted around the ground as the home celebrations began. Pontypridd had keeper Collins to thank for two great saves from a Cook free kick and a McDonald header, otherwise the margin could have been greater. The final whistle brought an end to the match with Pontyclun winning at a canter by 5 goals to 1. Pontyclun Manager Phil Preene said "Local derbies are normally close-run affairs and its always great to win them but this one was particularly pleasing". Pontyclun have another home game next Saturday (15 Jan), as they host Merthyr Saints with a 2.15 kick off at the Ivor Park. Pontyclun Team: Mark Poole, Phil Watson, Eliot Davey, Lance Hill, Barry Quinn (capt), Craig Williams, Adrian James, Gavin Williams, John Ralph, Matthew Cook, Ross Hutchins Subs: Pat McDonald (for G Williams 60), David Lewis (for Davey 78 mins), Ross Youlden (for Hutchins). SATURDAY 18 DECEMBER 2004Pontardawe 2 - 0 PontyclunPontyclun travelled to runaway leaders Pontardawe for the final league fixture before the Christmas break to face a side who remarkably have only dropped 5 points all season so far. Pontardawe settled into their game the quicker of the two sides and forced all the early pressure. The home side elected to overload Pontyclun in midfield, playing 5 in the engine room, as opposed to Pontyclun’s quartet of Adrian James, Eliot Davey, Craig Williams and John Ralph. The Clun conceded a number of early corners as Pontardawe pushed for an opener, but a mixture of good defending and keeper Mark Poole fine saves kept the scoreline blank until the 25th minute when Geza Hajgato was allowed to run from midfield unopposed before seeing his shot saved by Poole, only for the ball to run kindly for the home side straight back into his path to allow him to tap into an empty net. At this point Pontyclun were struggling to put any fluency into their game due to the amount of defending they were forced to do. The Clun were restricted to playing on the counter-attack during the opening period, with Matthew Cook looking dangerous and John Ralph in support. The half time interval arrived with the score still at 1-0 to Pontardawe. Whatever Pontyclun management duo of Phil Preene and Alan Jacka said to their team at half time seemed to work wonders as they came out and played like a different side, giving the home team a torrid time. Suddenly, Pontyclun were keeping possession and asking questions of the Pontardawe defence. In the very first minute of the second half, John Ralph went agonisingly close to equalising after a fine flowing move involving Williams, Cook and Watson ended with Ralph’s shot being blocked by the keeper and rolling away to safety. At the other end, Pontyclun still had to be alert, with the home side always capable of causing problems. Pontyclun’s defence had got to grips with the home side’s strikers, with captain Barry Quinn enjoying a physical battle with the towering Layton Thomas. The Clun once more went close to equalising when Craig Williams went on a mazy run which took him clear of the ‘Dawe defence and ended with his shot just fizzing past the far post. Eliot Davey was next to try his luck when he took aim from distance but saw his shot fly over the bar. The Clun were then caught by a sucker-punch, having been in the ascendancy. Pontardawe made it 2-0 when Ian Morgan was left unmarked at a corner to divert his header home. Pontyclun responded in the right way, forcing the home side onto the back foot, creating a half-chance for Cook but defence were able to recover and make a tackle. Clun keeper Mark Poole was forced to make another smart save at the other end when Pontardawe broke away, turning Smith’s shot on the turn around the post. As the game wore on, Pontyclun were having more and more possession with Craig Williams and John Ralph wreaking havoc in midfield, as they combined to good effect. Pontyclun’s dominance was almost rewarded in the 88th minute when, sub Lance Hill was just unable to guide his shot home at full stretch, which would have been a goal that Pontyclun’s play warranted. There were no further goals but the Clun had given their all during the second period and had more than matched the home side, who now look certainties for promotion. Pontyclun now have a break from Welsh League action, with the next game at home to local rivals Pontypridd Town on Saturday Jan 8th, kick off 2.15pm at the Ivor Park. On Boxing Day, Pontyclun hold the annual Under 30’s v Over 30’s fixture at the Ivor Park, with players past and present all very welcome, kick off at 11am. Pontyclun: Mark Poole, Phil Watson, David Lewis, Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), Eliot Davey, Adrian James, Craig Williams, John Ralph, Matthew Cook, Gavin Thomas Subs: Lance Hill (for Pope 75 mins), Pat McDonald (for Thomas 78 mins) Report by Paul Cale
