Corries 1
Pontyclun’s 2007-2008 campaign in the MacWhirter Welsh
football league Division One got underway with a home fixture against
their Radyr neighbours and honours ended even as both sides took a point
from a 1-1 draw, writes Greg Lamerton, Pontyclun FC.

Pontyclun FC - 11/08/2007
Pontyclun included new signings Jason Smith and Fraser
Williams but suffered a pre-match set back when Craig Williams failed a
last minute fitness test.
Ponty started brightly with the pace of Fraser Williams
causing problems down the left hand side and Williams created an opening
for himself but his shot was wide of the mark and failed to trouble
Corries keeper Rhys Nadin.
However it was the visitors who created the first clear cut
chance when a good break down the right ended with Ponty keeper Rhys
Davies blocking an effort at the near post. The ball rebounded to Corries
number nine Rhys Yates who blasted the ball high over the bar from no more
than six yards out with an open goal at his mercy.
Minutes later the Corries twin strike force carved open the
Ponty defence with some neat interplay which forced an excellent save from
Davies. Striker Yates had further opportunities to give the Corries the
lead but Davies made another excellent stop from point blank range and
Yates fired yet another opening over the bar.
Although Pontyclun had their fair share of the play in the
opening half, they were fortunate to go into the break all square.
Pontyclun did not heed the warnings from the first half on
resumption of play and once again had to rely on Davies to keep the
Corries out after Yates yet again broke through on the right.
However Davies could do nothing to prevent the visitors
taking the lead five minutes into the half when Yates struck after a
quickly taken throw caught Jay Browning out of position and the ball was
played into the box to give the Corries striker an easy tap in.
Ross Youlden came on for Pontyclun in place of the struggling
James Russell with young David Bevan replacing Browning minutes later.
Youlden had an immediate impact on proceedings when he played
an excellent long ball up to Ross Hutchins on the edge of the Corries box.
The pacy striker, who had up to that stage, had a quiet game controlled
the ball well and turned to fire an excellent shot into the top of the net
at the point where the bar meets the post, giving keeper Nadin no chance
of saving it.
With his job done, Hutchins made way for Ceiron Beer for the
last ten minutes and both sides played out the remainder of the game
content to take a point each.
Manager Phil Preene appeared content with the result but the
attack did not create enough chances and never really looked like scoring
prior to Hutchins’ effort. In addition there is a need for a centre back
to shore up things in defence especially as club captain Barry Quinn is a
long term casualty following his horrific broken leg suffered last season.

Pontyclun 0 - 0 Garw
Athletic
Pontyclun gave a good account of themselves in this Welsh
League Division Two fixture, where the visitors had recently secured the
midweek point necessary to give them the league title and promotion to
Welsh League Division One.
Pontyclun were able to recall player-coach Adrian James and
also gave a start to young striker Ceiron Beer, after their midweek draw
with Caerau Ely. In gaining a point, Pontyclun guaranteed their place in
Division Two next season, making a tremendous recovery after being
pointless after the first six games of the season and looking like
relegation candidates with a host of key players missing the opening
games of the season.
This particular game was to be one of few chances and both
teams tried to get the ball down and play constructive football. Garw
enjoyed more possession during the first half, without really troubling
the Pontyclun defensive unit of Adrian James, Eliot Davey and Ross
Youlden. Clun’s goalkeeper Rhys Davies looked secure whenever he was
called into action and towards the end of the opening half was called
into action to tip away a fine volley by Garw’s Wells. At the other end,
it was a similar story where Pontyclun didn’t really create too many
clear cut chances but with Hutchins and Beer working hard up front, the
Garw backline had to be on their toes.
The second period was very similar to the previous half, with
Garw passing the ball around and the Clun happy to let them go sideways
across the pitch but prevented them from getting any real penetration.
Although chances were few and far between, there was still some good
football on show for the appreciative crowd at the
Ivor Park. Both teams
had half chances before the end of the game but the scoreline remained
blank at the full time whistle.
Garw were then presented with the Welsh League Division Two
trophy by Welsh League Representative Alf Germain.
This was the Clun’s penultimate game of the season and on
Tuesday 8th May, they play their final game of the season away to
Townhill based
West End, kick off is at
6.30pm.
Pontyclun: Rhys Davies, Jason Browning, Simon Payne,
Eliot Davey, Ross Youlden, Adrian James, Craig Williams, Ryan Blanche,
Jon Rees, Ceiron Beer, Ross Hutchins. Subs: S Williams, G
Mele, W Morgan.

Caerau Ely 1 - 1
Pontyclun
Pontyclun had to be satisfied with a point after their trip
to Cwrt-yr-Ala to face a Caerau Ely side that face a punishing end of
season run-in with another five games to play after this fixture.
Pontyclun once more had to reshuffle, as they lost Tyrone
Pope and David Lewis and Geraint Williams through injury in addition to
player-coach Adrian James through suspension. On the plus side, the Clun
were able to recall Jon Rees, Eliot Davey, Rhys Davies and Craig Roberts
to the starting lineup.
It was Roberts who looked the most dangerous in the opening
exchanges as he continually caused Caerau’s hesitant back four problems.
First, he burst through and forced the keeper into two fingertip saves
after being put clear by Blanche and then Craig Williams. The third
chance came when once more, Roberts sprinted clear and as he burst into
the box, he had his shirt pulled by Caerau’s Jeff Pike as he was about
to shoot, but amazingly the referee waved play on. However, Pontyclun
did take the lead on 28 minutes from a free kick, when Jon Rees spotted
a gap and curled home a great shot which left the keeper motionless to
make it 1-0 to the Pontyclun.
They should have gone further ahead when Craig Williams made
a good break to the bye-line and pulled the ball across the area to
Andrew Morris who looked set to score but saw the ball bobble over his
foot as he prepared to side-foot home.
Pontyclun's keeper Rhys Davies had his first real save to
make on 40 minutes when he dived full length to push a good strike from
Caerau’s Greatrex around the post. Pontyclun defenders Youlden, Davey
and Rees were coping well with the physical presence of Caerau’s
Harrington as the home side pushed for an equalizer. Also, young Jay
Browning was putting in a good performance at right wing-back.
The second half saw Caerau have more of the game than in the
first period as they threw bodies forward. The lively Cotterill looked
the most likely threat for the home side with his tireless running.
Indeed he grabbed a scrambled equalizer on 70 minutes when the Clun
defence froze, isolating keeper Davies with the headed effort squeezing
in at the far post.
Pontyclun then had a scare when Ross Youlden suffered a head
injury after a full-blooded collision but thankfully was okay to
continue. Both sides had chances to win the game before the end with
Caerau striking the angle of post and bar after a swift move. In the
very last minute, lively young Pontyclun substitute Ceiron Beer outpaced
the home defence before lobbing the onrushing Caerau keeper perfectly,
only to see his goal-bound effort cruelly bounce over the bar off the
bone-hard pitch. This was the last action of the game and Pontyclun
would certainly have secured all three points.
Pontyclun now host recently crowned Division Two champions
Garw Athletic on Saturday 5th May (2.30pm kick off), followed by the
final game of the season, away to Swansea based West End on Tues 8th May
(6.30pm kick off).

Pontyclun 3 - 0 Llwydcoed
Pontyclun
looked to finally ease their possible relegation worries against bottom
side Llwydcoed after suffering a 3-1 loss at Cardiff Corries in midweek.
The ‘Clun
were again without a number of regulars and had to draft in Dai Lewis
and Gavin Rees to play alongside Eliot Davey in defence. Ross Youlden,
who had a very good game at centre back against the Corries, was moved
in to midfield in place of the suspended Adrian James and Andy Morris
returned in attack.
The first
half was somewhat of a cautious affair as neither side could really
afford to lose with Llwydcoed fighting for their lives at the bottom and
the ‘Clun not wanting to be dragged into a relegation battle with a
handful of games remaining.
The
mercurial Ryan Blanche came closest to breaking the deadlock when he
struck a post from a free kick and when the ball was hooked back in from
the clearance, Gavin Rees saw his goal bound header kicked off the line
by a Llwydcoed defender.
As Ponty
pressed with some neat build up play, they were frustrated by repeatedly
being caught offside and at the back they looked a little shaky at times
and nearly went behind when the visitor’s centre forward broke clear but
thankfully his chipped effort from 25 yards just crept over Rhys Davies’
crossbar.
Coach
James’ half time talk must have been inspirational as within twenty
minutes of the restart Ponty found themselves three up with the points
safely in the bag.
Ross
Hutchins was replaced by Craig Holly in attack and the youngster
immediately caused problems with his strong running. A Blanche free kick
found Youlden in the box and he blasted his effort just over the top but
the same pair combined to bring the first goal minutes later when
Youlden glance a header into the net following yet another Blanche free
kick.
Then
Blanche played a clever short ball to Simon Payne from a corner but
Payne’s excellent ball in was missed by both Morris and Holly as they
got in each others way in the six yard box. However Ponty were not long
in extending their lead when another superb cross from Payne was nodded
in by the rangy Morris.
Llwydcoed
then had their left back Stuart Evans sent off for receiving two yellow
cards and Ponty made the game safe with a third goal almost immediately
thereafter. Craig Holly chased down a ball which appeared to be going
out for a goal kick and he was rewarded for his hard work when his cross
in to the box was converted by John Rees with the aid of a slight
deflection.
Ponty then
strung together a great move involving several players with the ball
being pinged around and although Dai Lewis’s final ball in was
disappointing, applause rang round the ground from an appreciative
audience.
So an
excellent win from the ‘Clun and three points against strugglers
Morriston Town at Ivor Park next Saturday ko 2.30pm should finally see
them secure their position in the Division for another season.
The Club
held a car was to raise funds for their new changing rooms on the
morning of the match and would like to thank all the volunteers who
turned up to help. Particular thanks must go to the children who worked
very, very hard namely Sam Shilton, Lewis Miller, Ceiron and Jordan
Lawrence and Madeline, Lucy-Anne and Molly Davies. Many thanks also to
all the patrons who turned up to have their vehicles washes and to Mid
Glamorgan Fire Service, without whose help the event could not have
taken place.
On Friday
4th May Pontyclun FC are holding a Sports Quiz at the Athletic Club,
Caston Road, Pontyclun from
7.30pm with cash prizes for the winners. Please come along and
support us in raising fund for our changing room project. Teams of up to

Cambrian & Clydach 2 - 0 Pontyclun
Pontyclun
traveled to near neighbours Cambrian & Clydach Vale but returned empty
handed, going down 2-0 to a side that are joint top of the division and
near certainties for promotion.
The ‘Clun
were forced to play veteran utility player Peter Shilton in goal owing
to the injury or unavailability of every goalkeeper on the clubs books
and he took to the task well despite leading somewhat of a charmed life
in the opening half.
The match
was played on a rock hard surface owing to the recent fine weather and
both sides found difficulty in getting the ball under control owing to
the exaggerated bounce. Ponty competed well for the opening thirty
minutes and limited their hosts to one long range effort which Shilton
smothered after a slight fumble. Adrian James, the Pontyclun coach,
battled in midfield aided by two willing deputies in Simon Payne and
Craig Williams and the back three of Eliot Davey, Tyrone Pope and Ross
Youlden competed for every ball.
Shilton
rode his first piece of luck when Cambrian’s number six Scott Seldon hit
a speculative shot from 25 yards out and the keeper was relieved to see
the effort rebound off a post after making no effort to save the shot as
he obviously thought the ball was going wide.
Ponty
created a half-opening minutes later after good interplay between
strikers Hutchins and Geraint Williams but Hutchins’ effort was weak and
well wide. Eliot Davey then cynically hacked down a home attacker as he
broke through and from the resultant free kick, Richard Taylor hit the
crossbar with Shilton a mere spectator as the ball flew past him.
Shortly after Cambrian's Kristoffer Rees lobbed Shilton for what surely
seemed a goal but the ball finished inches over the bar and landed on
the top of the net. Minutes before the break central defender Christian
Cole’s effort also went over the top and the ‘Clun were relieved to go
in to the break all square.
The hosts
made a lively start to the second period and Richard Taylor again struck
the crossbar, but this time with a headed effort after the ball was
hooked in from the right hand side. Seconds later Shaun Williams cleared
a corner off his own line and Davey was at full stretch to block an
effort from the resulting ball played back in.
Ponty were
being put under pressure by the Cambrian midfield and it seemed only a
matter of time before they took the lead. It eventually came courtesy of
a penalty kick when Craig Williams handled the ball inside the area and
number nine Darren Jones stepped up to stroke the ball past Shilton.
Manager
Phil Preene was forced to ring the changes and brought on three
substitutes for the last twenty minutes or so after Pope and Craig
Williams both picked up knocks, to add to Pontyclun’s woeful injury
list. Just as the game appeared to be petering out into a 1-0 victory
for the home team, they scored a second when Darren Jones found himself
completely unmarked following a corner and headed in to the net from two
yards out.
So a lot
of effort from the ‘Clun boys on the day and they certainly never gave
up on the battle but the injuries being picked up are stretching the
squad to breaking point and the team need a few more points to prevent
them being dragged back into a relegation battle. But with the bottom
two sides to visit Ivor Park before the end of the season, the points
needed to remain in the division should be comfortably obtained. ‘Clun
visit Cardiff Corinthians on Wednesday 18th April ko
6.30pm.
Pontyclun
FC are holding a charity CAR WASH this coming Saturday 21st April at the
Fire Station, Llantrisant Road, Pontyclun from 9.00am to 1pm so please

addition the club are holding a SPORTS QUIZ on Friday 4th May at the

Pontyclun
0 - 0 Caldicot Town
Honours
ended even in this MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two game at the Ivor
Park. Pontyclun went into the match against the promotion-chasing Gwent
visitors still missing a number of key personnel including keeper Rhys
Davies, defenders Tyrone Pope and Captain Barry Quinn, striker Andrew
Morris and veteran Carl Lewis. In came goalkeeper Brett Davey, defenders
Gavin Rees and Dai Lewis and striker Craig Holley for their first
appearances of the season and all performed very well on the night.
Even
though the visitors are in the promotion shake-up, Pontyclun have an
excellent record against Caldicot in recent years and with hindsight,
both teams will view the result as a decent point gained on a rock-hard
pitch.
The first
half was a pretty even affair with both teams canceling out most of the
attacking play in the final third. Caldicot did enjoy a 15 minute spell
where they forced a flurry of corners and set pieces around the
Pontyclun penalty area but only managed to carve out one clear-cut
chance when Lewis was caught in possession and the ball was squared but
Cullimore was unable to control his shot and blazed over. For the ‘Clun,
Geraint Williams, returning after a spell in Australia looked sharp up
front and caused the Caldicot defence problems with his movement in
partnership with debut-making Holley.
Player-coach Adrian James had a chance for the Clun in the thirty-third
minute, after great build-up play from Ryan Blanche, John Rees and James
resulted in the keeper making a comfortable save. Within minutes, John
Rees played in Simon Payne who played a dangerous ball across goal with
nobody able to get the decisive touch to put the ball away. At the other
end, Davey was a commanding presence in the Pontyclun goal whenever he
was called upon and looked secure at all times.
The second
period saw the game follow a similar pattern with half-chances at both
ends but Caldicot going closest after 60 minutes when Eliot Davey, Gavin
Rees and Dai Lewis who all defended very well all night were grateful to
see keeper Brett Davey tip the ball onto the crossbar after Caldicot
managed to get into the penalty area and the ball was cleared away to
safety.
Pontyclun
then put together a spell of attacking play and should have taken the
lead on 72 minutes when Geraint Williams was played through by John Rees
and as the keeper rushed out, Williams produced a great finish, striking
home from 40 yards only for the linesman to flag for offside when
Williams was clearly onside by some five or six yards.
That
wasn’t the end of the lineman’s involvement as within five minutes John
Rees was through on goal, after a great passing move from Craig
Williams, Blanche and James. Even though Rees’ run had come from inside
his own half, the linesman seemed to be distracted by Williams jogging
back to the half way line on the other side of the pitch and flagged for
offside even though the player was 40 yards from the play and making his
way back and not getting involved in the play.
Caldicot
also struck one effort into the side netting from a difficult angle with
keeper Davey having the angles covered.
So, in the
end a point for each side as it was in the reverse fixture earlier in
the season when the score finished at 3-3 in Caldicot.
Pontyclun’s next matches are at home to Ammanford on Saturday March 7th
March, followed by a short trip to second-placed Cambrian & Clydach on
Saturday March 14th, both matches kick off at 2.30 pm.
Pontyclun:
Brett Davey, Craig Williams, Dai Lewis, Eliot Davey, Gavin Rees, Simon
Payne, Adrian James, John Rees, Ryan Blanche, Craig Holley, Geraint
Williams. Subs: Ross Hutchins (rep Holley 78 mins), Shaun
Williams, Pepe Mele.

Garw 4 – 0 Pontyclun
Pontyclun went in to
this game on the back of four straight wins, they also went into this
match against the leaders of the division with a number of key players
missing. Indeed, the Clun were missing their entire defensive unit from
the last three games and the absentees included injured captain Barry
Quinn, influential defender Tyrone Pope, the energetic John Rees and the
much improved Rhys Davies all missed this fixture, together with striker
Ross Hutchins. In came Welsh League debutant Mark Scowcroft in goal and
Pontyclun legend “Dusty” Miller also answered the rallying call.
League leaders Garw
started this game with immediate intent. Their busy midfield got their
passing game together right from the off. Also with their energetic
forwards they put the Clun under constant pressure. It was no surprise
then when the home side took the lead. A foul five yards outside the box
resulted in an excellent free kick being scored when the Garw forward put
the ball over the wall and into the bottom left hand corner giving
Scowcroft no chance.
The pressure from the
home was persistent and after the half hour mark they increased their lead
when the Clun failed to clear in their own box, both Eliot Davey and Craig
Williams both tried to take responsibility to clear the ball but managed
to get in each others way allowing the Garw striker to calmly slot in from
eight yards again giving Scowcroft no chance.
Pontyclun then tried
to up the tempo and started to make an impact in the game. The tireless
Adrian James tried to lead by example and increase the commitment from
Pontyclun. Despite the fact Pontyclun were 2-0 down, they were then dealt
another blow losing inform striker Andrew Morris who left the field with a
hamstring injury. This caused a re-shuffle with the experienced Carl Lewis
entering the midfield and Geraint Williams being pushed upfront. Williams
started to hold the ball up well and the midfield where now starting to
compete. Despite this Garw added a controversial third which was at least
two yards off side which the rather unfit official failed to spot, the
home striker rounded Scowcroft and slotted home with the desperate Davey
and Miller just failing to clear off the line.
To this point Pontyclun hadn’t created
any chances as the Garw back line were getting the better of young Matthew
James and Williams. The halftime whistle went with Garw three goals to the
good.
The second half
started much the same as the first with Garw doing all the attacking. The
Pontyclun backline of Miller, Davey and Simon Payne never gave up and
carried on holding their ground despite the ball coming straight back at
them time and time again. The home side's right winger was particularly
enjoying the afternoon as he continually caused opposite number Ryan
Blanche problems. Indeed it is fair to say that Garw started to exploit
this with all their attacking down the Pontyclun left. After the constant
barrage of attacks on the 75th minute mark they did eventually
increase their lead when the Garw number ten beat a couple of players on
the edge of the box before firing passed Scowcroft who once again had no
chance.
Another legend of
Pontyclun was then introduced as the skilful Shaun Williams had to leave
the field with a muscle strain and on came Pepe Mele. Mele was instantly
involved as Pontyclun produced their best move of the match. A number of
passes in the midfield resulted in the ball being spread wide to Mele who
produced a pin point cross for Williams who drilled the ball straight at
the home keeper who despite taking a number of goal kicks had probably his
first real save to make.
Garw then made changes
themselves and the excellent right winger was subbed probably to Blanches
relief. It has to be said that despite trailing this game, the majority of
the Pontyclun players kept going to the end even if it wasn’t going to be
their day.
The game fizzled out
with plenty of endeavour from Pontyclun and with a number of players
playing out of position and players missing, they can hold their heads up
for the effort they put in. Big thank you must go to Phil Miller and Pepe
Mele for again putting their boots on as so many key players were missing.
Pontyclun have a home
game against Caldicot Town on Wednesday 4th April which will
Kick off at 6.30pm, followed by another home game against Ammanford Town
on Sat 7th March at 2.30pm.
Pontyclun Team:
Mark Scowcroft, Eliot Davey, Simon Payne, Phil
Miller, Ryan Blanche, Shaun Williams, Craig Williams, Adrian James,
Geraint Williams, Matthew James, Andrew Morris, Subs: Pepe Mele, David
Lewis, Carl Lewis
Saturday 24 March 2007
Pontyclun 1 - 0 Tredegar Town
Another excellent
three points propelled Pontyclun into the top half of the table but the
result was somewhat overshadowed by a nasty injury to captain Barry Quinn
who was stretchered off a minute before half time and taken to hospital
where he was found to have both dislocated and broken his right ankle.
Naturally he will play no further part in the Clun’s remaining fixtures
this season and everyone connected with the club sends their best wishes
and hopes for a speedy recovery.
The match was anything
but a spectacle with both sides cancelling each other out despite the
attempt to play attractive football. The majority of the play was centred
on the midfield area and Ponty suffered a loss there midway through the
half, when Carl Lewis was forced to leave the fray after tweaking a
hamstring. Apart from an early half chance when Tyrone Pope just failed to
get his head to a Ryan Blanche free kick the first noteworthy incident to
happen in a lack lustre opening period was Quinn’s injury. The referee
blew early for half time and the second half was delayed for ten minutes
whilst the paramedics escorted Quinn from the field.
Quinn was replaced for
the second half by young Shaun Williams and with almost his first touch
Williams found player coach Adrian James with a pass but with the goal
beckoning, James completely “fluffed” his shot, living up to his “fluff”
nickname!
Shortly after Mathew
James created an opening for himself with some neat footwork, but again
the final shot was poor and didn’t really trouble the keeper.
At the other end John
Rees was caught in possession in his own area and Ponty were relieved to
see the ball deflected for a corner from the ensuing effort. The visitors
started to play some attractive football and had a chance to break the
stalemate but Sam Goulding blasted an effort over the bar after the ball
was squared to him on the edge of the area.
Ponty then created an
opening when Tyrone Pope played a diagonal ball over the top of the
defence to find Simon Payne unmarked at the far post but sadly Payne could
not add to the goal he scored at Llwydcoed the previous week and blasted
his effort over the top. However Ponty did take the lead with twenty five
minutes of the half played when Andy Morris found the net from the edge of
the area, his shot just creeping in after hitting the inside of a post.
Manager Preene sent on
Ross Hutchins to replace the ineffectual Blanche for the last twenty
minutes and Ponty comfortably held on to their lead and secured the
points.
Ponty travel to
leaders Garw Athletic next Saturday minus a number of players as John Rees
and Tyrone Pope are holidaying, Carl Lewis is injured and of course, the
skipper is out.
The club are holding a
charity CAR WASH at the fire station, Pontyclun on Saturday the 21st
April from 9am-1pm and would like to thank the local fire brigade for
their generous hospitality in allowing the use of their facility. In
addition the club are hosting a Sports Quiz night at the Athletic

AFC Llwydcoed 1 - 2 Pontyclun
Pontyclun
continued their excellent recent form and made it three wins on the bounce
after a hard-fought win against struggling Llwydcoed in a match played in
windy conditions.
A minute's
silence was observed by both teams prior to kick off as a mark of respect
to former Pontyclun goalkeeper and reserve team Manager Laurie Dodd who
sadly passed away recently and whose son Gary also represented the club
with great distinction and indeed 17 year old grandson Liam is now
continuing the family tradition by representing the club. The minute's
silence was also held in memory of Father Paul Bennett, who was tragically
killed last week at his home in Aberdare and was well known in the
Llwydcoed community.
The Clun had
Tyrone Pope, Eliot Davey and Ryan Blanche back in the squad after last
week's win against Penrhiwceiber. The home side, who are battling for
their lives at the bottom of the table, started the game with the higher
tempo, with the Clun taking longer to settle.
As the half
wore on, Pontyclun forced a number of set pieces around the box and
skipper Barry Quinn headed wide from a Ryan Blanche free kick during a
very scrappy first half. Llwydcoed controversially took the lead on 30
minutes after a drop-ball, where the referee tried to distract the two
players contesting the drop ball, as he put the ball into play. The ball
broke kindly for the home side who were able to get in behind and Mason
whipped a dangerous ball across the six yard area where Phillips nipped in
front of Carl Lewis to open the scoring for Coed. The home side were
visibly lifted by the goal and Pontyclun now had to raise their game.
Pontyclun’s
management team of Phil Preene and Adrian James read the riot act to their
side at half time after they had not performed in the opening half and the
Clun players returned for the second half with their ears stinging and
knowing that far more was required.
The pep talk
seemed to work as Pontyclun dominated the second half and hit back within
seven minutes of the re-start when Andrew Morris crashed home a header
from a good Ryan Blanche corner to make it one all.
Pontyclun
were now winning all the physical battles and put Coed under pressure.
Matthew James went on a mazy run which nearly resulted in a goal. Tyrone
Pope powered a header over the bar after another Blanche corner as the
home side struggled to cope with the aerial threat of Morris, Quinn and
Pope.
The visiting
supporters were then rewarded when Pontyclun grabbed their second goal
with twenty minutes remaining. Craig Williams picked out Ross Hutchins
with a good cross, who headed back across goal to Simon Payne who
thundered a header against the bar before following up to finish the job
as the ball bounced down off the bar for his first goal for the club.
From this
point onwards there only looked like being one winner as Pontyclun’s
confidence grew. Llwydcoed did force a good save out of keeper Rhys Davies
from a free kick and saw one effort rebound off the crossbar with their
best chances.
The Clun
should have wrapped the game up with ten minutes remaining as Blanche was
played in behind the defence with the keeper to beat but chose to take his
shot early and it resulted in a comfortable save. The Coed then lost their
discipline as their centre back was sent off for a head-butt on Blanche in
the closing minutes.
As the final
whistle came, Pontyclun had come away with a fairly comfortable win after
an indifferent first half. Credit must go to Phil Preene and Adrian James
for giving their side the wake up call they needed.
Next week,

Pontyclun 3 - 2
Penrhiwceiber Rangers
Another fine display
by Pontyclun to follow their excellent performance at Morriston the
previous week, ensured another three points and marched them nearer a mid
table position. Ponty had to reshuffle their defensive line with both
Tyrone Pope and Eliot Davey missing and reverted to a standard 4-3-3
formation with Andy Morris returning to partner young Matt James in
attack.
Ponty were at it form
the off and James had two early chances to give them the lead but the
combination of a good save by the keeper and a weak effort from James
himself saw the chances squandered.
On the quarter of a
hour mark skipper Quinn got in a header from a corner which was blocked on
the line and Andy Morris’ follow up was also kicked off the line by a
visiting defender. Ponty were not to be denied though and took the lead
through James after an excellent move down the right.
Ponty looked to
increase their lead and both Craig Williams and Andy Morris shot wide when
in good goal scoring positions. Ponty looked dominant but as usually
happens, they were punished for not taking the chances on offer and the
Ceiber made it 1-1 when Ponty failed to clear a corner and Nathan Manley
netted from close in.
Immediately though
Ponty came agonisingly close to regaining their lead but Simon Payne’s
blistering drive was tipped over by visiting keeper Daniel Ford. At the
other end, Ceiber won a free kick yards outside the box and in an almost
identical repeat of what occurred with Ryan Giggs against Lille in the
Champions League, they took the kick when Ponty were trying to organise a
wall but to everyone’s relief the shot struck an upright. Ponty then broke
and Shaun Williams had another excellent effort cleared off the line.
Ponty went in to half time wondering how they were not at least two goals
to the good but grateful for that let off from the free kick.
In contrast to the
first half, the opening twenty minutes after the restart were somewhat of
a drab affair with hardy a goal scoring opportunity created by either side
with both teams trying to gain control of the midfield areas. Quinn sent
an effort inches wide from a corner before the same player was slightly
outpaced in defence and the ‘Ceiber number eight forced Davies into a fine
save. Shaun Williams then made way for sub David Bevan and within seconds
Shaun’s elder brother Craig was brought down in the box and Ponty were
awarded a penalty. Up stepped Carl Lewis who coolly slotted past Ford to
regain the lead for Ponty. Then an excellent move involving the sub Bevan
and Craig Williams resulted in Williams playing a fine long pass to send
livewire James clear. He got to the ball first as he sped into the area
and the keeper brought him down as he rushed out off his line. Lewis
again, scored with some aplomb from the resultant kick and Ponty moved
into a 3-1 lead.
Ceiber though, ensured
Ponty would suffer a nervous last ten minutes or so after Manley netted
following a Vowles corner kick and had keeper Davies to thank when he
produced a fine save to retain the lead. Ponty should have made it safe
with minutes left when Beer prodded the ball inches wide after good work
from Morris when he harried the keeper after a long Quinn free kick into
the Ceiber area. Pontyclun thoroughly deserved all three points from this
match and can confidently travel to bottom side Llwydcoed next Saturday
looking to extend their fine recent run.
The ‘Clun are holding
a “Race Night” on Saturday 24th March at the Athletic Club,
Pontyclun, so if you fancy a flutter or simply a good night out, just turn

speakers and a comedian on Thursday 10th May, both events being

Morriston
Town 0 - 5 Pontyclun
Pontyclun
traveled west to the Swansea suburbs and put on a five star performance in
trouncing struggling Morriston Town with a nap hand of goals. Pontyclun
were missing Elliot Davey and striker Andy Morris and played Carl Lewis in
a wing back roll and brought in livewire 16-year-old Matthew James to
partner Craig Roberts in attack.
Pontyclun
went about their business straight from the off and were two up inside the
opening ten minutes. Firstly Craig Roberts unleashed a tremendous shot
that flew past the keeper and Craig Williams slotted a second minutes
later.
Ponty had a
scare when skipper Barry Quinn had to leave the field for a while after
suffering a nasty cut on the forehead but he returned resembling Pudsey
Bear after a bandage had been applied to the wound. Ponty then had several
chances to increase the score with Matt James and Craig Williams spurning
golden opportunities. The third goal did eventually arrive when James
burst clear and although his effort was blocked by the keeper, Ryan
Blanche followed up to slot coolly home.
Morriston
had a chance to reduce the deficit following a corner but keeper Rhys
Davies pulled off a superb save to tip over a point blank header. In all
honesty Ponty could have scored six or seven in the opening half but
Manager Preene was content with the half time lead.
It was much
of the same in the second half with Ponty in the ascendancy and they
created, and spurned chance after chance. Young James scored the fourth
with a fierce drive from the edge of the area and with the result in no
doubt, Preene rang the changes and brought on subs Browning, Hutchins and
Beer. Indeed Beer should have netted seconds after coming on as he broke
clear but he shot straight at the advancing keeper.
In their
eagerness, Ponty kept getting caught offside and it took an excellent run
from his own half by Simon Payne to set up Hutchins for the fifth.
This was an
excellent win for Pontyclun with the whole team performing well and young
James was particularly impressive and surely deserves a run in the side.
Next week
Ponty entertain Penrhiwceiber on Saturday 10th March at Ivor Park K.O.
2.30pm, looking to avenge a narrow defeat suffered earlier in the
season. They then travel to bottom club Llwydcoed on the 17th March.

Pontyclun 1 - 1 Treharris Athletic
This was
always going to be an interesting match up as Pontyclun came into the
fixture off the back of two straight defeats while their opponents had
enjoyed a three game winning run. As it happened honours were even at the
end of a dogged encounter where the visitors just shaded the first half
but Pontyclun fought back after the break to even things up.
The Clun’
were without the inspirational Tyrone Pope and deployed John Rees in a
sweeper position alongside captain Barry Quinn and Eliot Davey in defence.
Ponty’ created the first significant chance when young Shaun Williams
rounded the keeper but with an empty net begging, he delayed his execution
and the chance was missed as a defender got back to clear. Ponty’ were to
rue this miss on the half hour mark after possession was given away in
midfield and a good through ball enabled the rangy Treharris number nine
Ian Batten to shoot easily past Rees for the opener.
After the
break Ponty settled the earlier and were rewarded with an equaliser
following a corner when Eliot Davey bundled the ball in from close range.
Thereafter followed a hard fought midfield battle as both sides strived to
get on top and John Rees prevented the visitors going in front with a
superb last minute tackle deep inside the area.
Treharris
had what seemed a very good goal turned down by the referee's assistant
for offside and their substitute sent a very good effort inches wide.
Ponty’
manager Phil Preene threw on 16-year-old Ceiron Beer for his Welsh League
debut for the final ten minutes or so but the game petered out into a draw
which was a fair result on the basis of play. Pontylcun next visit
Morriston Town on Saturday 3rd March ko
2.30pm.

Briton Ferry 2 - 1 Pontyclun
Pontyclun
slipped to a third consecutive defeat at Briton Ferry on Saturday and risk
being dragged in to a relegation battle unless they turn things round over
the next few weeks. Pontyclun’s cause was not helped by the late
withdrawal of John Rees and the absences of Ryan Blanche who was on
holiday and Simon Payne who was suspended.
In came Carl
Lewis in a midfield role and youngsters Shaun Williams and Darren Webb in
the wing back positions. The home side went in to an early lead after
fourteen minutes of action when Rob Parker netted with the Ponty defence
vainly appealing for offside. Minutes later they nearly doubled their lead
when their number nine Phillips ran onto a through ball and lobbed the
onrushing Ponty keeper Rhys Davies but fortunately for Ponty the ball just
crept over the bar.
Tyrone Pope
then gave away a free kick on the edge of the area and from the resultant
kick the ball rebounded off a post after being deflected by Pope’s head.
Pontyclun came back into the game for a while and forced a succession of
corners and free kicks, without really threatening to score. Andy Morris
came closest after getting his head to an excellent dead ball kick from
Pope but the keeper pulled off a fine save. Then on the stroke of half
time, Webb gave a simple ball away and Ferry broke straight down the
middle. They looked sure to increase their lead but their number 11 Dan
McGrath shot narrowly wide of Davies’ post.
Pontyclun
manager Phil Preene introduced Craig Roberts at half time, replacing the
ineffectual Webb and in a reshuffle, played with three strikers. Craig
Williams and Eliot Davey were both cautioned for foul tackles and Ponty
were struggling to keep the Ferry attackers out.
Davies had
to pull of a superb save following a corner but Ponty were further
hampered when Carl Lewis had to leave the field after suffering a blow to
the head when the ball struck him. Shaun Williams saw his cross come shot
just creep over the bar before Ponty fell further behind minutes later. A
swift move out of defence saw Ferry break down the left and McGrath found
himself totally unmarked and his cross was turned past Davies by Richard
Howells. Davies kept the visitors in the match with one or two fine stops
and Ponty gave themselves a lifeline when Andy Morris bundled the ball
home following a corner. In the dying minutes Ross Hutchings had a few
golden opportunities to snatch an equaliser but the chances went begging.
So no points
for Clun and none were really deserved from an inept performance against
average opponents. Ponty captain Barry Quinn labelled the performance
“unacceptable” and vowed to stop the rot when Treharris visit Ivor Park
next Saturday, 24th Feb ko 2pm.
Pontyclun
are holding a race night at the Athletic Club on Saturday March 24th at

Bettws 3 - 0 Pontyclun
Pontyclun FC
were out fought and out muscled rather than out played at Bettws Park last
Saturday and came away empty handed. In a bruising first half, in which
Bettws had Steve Amos sent off for a reckless challenge,
Bettws
gradually imposed their will on the match and took a 2-0 lead which the
‘Clun never looked like clawing back, despite playing against ten men for
the entire second period. Indeed the deficit could have been greater at
the break as Bettws missed a penalty after fifteen minutes following a
good save by Rhys Davies. They did however take the lead ten minutes later
when Jason Bird scrambled the ball home after it ricocheted around the
area following a corner.
There was no
luck attached to the second goal however as Richard Llewellyn smashed an
unstoppable shot into the top of the net from outside the box, giving
Davies absolutely no chance in the Ponty goal.
There were
some stern confrontations happening on the pitch and this spilled over at
the break as a small mêlée involving some of the players and spectators
occurred as the teams walked off for half time.
Bettws
seemed content to sit on their lead after the break and pulled all of
their nine outfield players behind the ball so Ponty found it hard to even
muster one decent attempt on the home goal.
The game was
killed off on the hour mark when hesitancy in the Clun defence between
Davies and Captain Barry Quinn resulted in Llewellyn nipping in between
them and coolly lobbing Davies for his second goal.
Ponty never
gave up though and created a few half chances without really threatening
the lead and the game petered out and ended in a comfortable win for the
home side.
Coach Adrian
James reflected on the fact that a few of his players were hiding on the
day and not really up for the battle that always welcomes visitors to the
Maesteg valley ground.

January 2007
Pontyclun 3
– 0 Garden Village
Pontyclun
secured another three points and continued their climb away from the lower
reaches of Division Two of the MacWhirter Welsh Football League.
This was
never going to be an easy fixture against a side that have consistently
had the better of the ‘Clun in their encounters over the last few seasons
and indeed inflicted a 5-0 drubbing on the Clun at Gorseinon few short
months ago.
Pontyclun
fielded what was possibly their full strength side but found themselves
under a lot of pressure in the opening half hour, particularly from free
kicks and corners where the visitors had a distinct height advantage.
The home
side had an excellent chance to secure an early lead after a superb
passing movement started by Barry Quinn and involving Craig Williams and
Ryan Blanche ended with striker Ross Hutchings blasting wide when he
should have at least tested the keeper.
The ‘Clun
had three players booked in the opening period for foul tackles but
referee Mr. Thomas from Baglan was very inconsistent with his decision
making and let some strong challenges go unpunished whilst carding players
for what appeared to be relatively minor offences.
The visitors
had the ball in the net early on following a corner but the effort was
ruled out for a foul on Ponty keeper Rhys Davies. Williams made an
excellent last gasp tackle in the area to thwart a Village goal attempt
and Tyrone Pope cleared with a header from the resulting corner.
Somewhat
against the run of play, Ponty took the lead when Hutchings redeemed his
earlier miss and shot neatly into the corner after good build up play from
Williams and John Rees.
The visitors
then suffered a major blow when Steve Evans was sent off for a second book
able offence in added time and they faced the prospect of playing ten
versus eleven in the second half.
Despite
being one light The Village side again put the Clun under pressure after
the break and forced a succession of corners but never really looked like
breaching the home defensive line.
As the half
wore on though the extra man was beginning to tell and Ponty were finding
gaps, particularly down the left flank. Adrian James fed Blanche and he
tested the keeper from distance and Hutchings fired over the bar from just
outside the area after an excellent cross from fellow striker Andy Morris.
Blanche
again brought a good save from Village keeper Stuart Lloyd and it seemed
only a matter of time before they extended their lead. That happened in
the 82nd minute when John Rees latched on to a through ball and controlled
it beautifully before running in on goal and coolly slotting past Lloyd.
In the dying
minutes Blanche added a third when he chipped Lloyd and with the game
wrapped up, manager Preene gave a run out to substitutes Shaun Williams
and Jay Browning.
So three
excellent points from a difficult fixture and Ponty travel to Bettws next
weekend for what will prove to be another tricky encounter as Bettws are
in the middle of a good run of results themselves.
Pontyclun FC
are running a number of fund raising activities to aid the building of new
changing facilities at Ivor Park and these will include a race night in
February, a Valentines Day dance on Friday 16th Feb at the Athletic Club,
a Dinner with guest speakers at the end of April and a sports quiz in
early May.

Troedyrhiw 1 - 1 Pontyclun FC
Pontyclun earned an
excellent point from their visit to high flying Troedyrhiw on Saturday 13th
January. The ‘Clun welcomed back Craig Williams after injury and played
youngster Lee Dodd, son of former Ponty star Gary Dodd, in a forward role.
The home side had the
better of the early skirmishes but the Pontyclun defensive unit of Pope,
Davey and Quinn held firm despite the pressure being applied by a lively
home attack. After repelling the early forages Pontyclun took the lead
after fifteen minutes when a Ryan Blanche corner was flicked on by skipper
Quinn and his fellow central defender Tyrone Pope crashed a firm header
past the keeper.
However the lead was
short lived as minutes later a cross in from the left hand side found
Troedyrhiw number five Rose unmarked at the far post and he placed a neat
header past Rhys Davies.
Ponty were gradually
imposing their will on the game thanks to the midfield trio of James,
Williams and Rees and Ryan Blanche looked dangerous from set plays
whenever Ponty were awarded a free kick. Williams made a tremendous surge
into the box after being put through by Andy Morris but found the side
netting with his effort. Minutes later Ponty were unlucky not to retake
the lead following another Blanche free kick. His pinpoint ball in found
Quinn and he powered a header goal wards which the keeper did well to
parry. The ball rebounded to Williams who was convinced he would score but
somehow the keeper got back on his feet and made another fantastic save to
keep the status quo. Seconds later yet another Blanche kick saw Morris
beat the onrushing keeper to the ball but he looked agonisingly on as he
saw his headed effort rebound off the upright.
The second half was a
real battle in the heavy conditions with Ponty replacing young Dodd at
half time with Ross Hutchings. Troedyrhiw looked the more likely to snatch
the game but the combination of some excellent keeping by Davies and some
resolute defending by Captain Quinn and his team mates kept the home side
at bay.
Manager Preene gave
young Matt James a run out in place of Blanche, hoping that his pace would
catch out a tiring home defence but he wasn’t able to make much of an
impact. Ponty had a few scares in the dying stages as Troedyrhiw pressed
for the winner and three of four headed attempts either flashed over the
crossbar or finished narrowly wide. In the end Ponty hung on for a
deserved draw and can look forward with confidence to their next game away
at West End (Swansea) on Saturday 20th Jan KO 2pm.

Pontyclun FC 2 - 1 Merthyr Saints
“Twas a reason to be
jolly!” for Pontyclun and their long serving captain Barry Quinn, as his
early goal helped secure a fine win in this pre-Christmas encounter at
Ivor Park last Saturday. Quinn struck after fifteen minutes when he placed
a precision header past the keeper from a free kick by Adrian James. There
were few moments of excitement during a dour first half to warm up the
supporters, on what was a bitterly cold day but Merthyr were starting to
cause a few problems as half time approached. Home keeper Rhys Davies
twice had to pull of smothering saves to prevent an equaliser but the
‘Clun went in for their half time cuppa one up.
After the break it
took the visitors fifteen minutes to draw level with a super strike from
substitute Maru de Silva. A swift break down the left was halted by Quinn
but the ball broke to de Silva on then edge of the penalty area and he
lashed an unstoppable left foot shot high into the far corner, giving
Davies no chance.
For the next twenty
minutes Merthyr were the better side and looked the more likely to go on
and win the game. The Pontyclun defence were playing a risky high line and
on more then one occasion were caught out by a long ball played over the
top.
Davies pulled off one
excellent save to keep the score level and the visiting No. 9 should have
scored but his chip over Davies finished narrowly wide. As so happens on
occasions like this Pontyclun scored against the run of play and what a
fine goal it was. The ball was fed through to Ryan Blanche on the edge of
the penalty box. Blanche had his back to goal but somehow managed to
manoeuvre himself a yard of space before he turned and fired a superb left
foot shot over visiting keeper Jason Pendry for one of the ‘Cluns goals of
the season.
Ponty held on for the
win and a vital three points as they now embark on a run of four away
games on the trot at Caerau (Ely) on 30th Dec, Cardiff Corries
on 6th Jan, Troedyrhiw on 13th Jan and West End on
20th Jan.
Pontyclun FC is
holding a fund raising “Car Wash”
this coming Saturday 30th December from 9am till 1.00pm at
Pontyclun Fire Station, Cowbridge Road, Pontyclun (approxx 400 mtrs from

pavilion/changing rooms planned for Ivor Park. Any donation in return for

ANNOUNCEMENT - 11 DECEMBER 2006
Saturday 2 December 2006
Tredegar Town 1- 4 Pontyclun FC
Pontyclun
secured a comfortable victory from their trip to Tredegar on Saturday
December 2nd. An unchanged ‘Clun got off to a dreadful start though as
they conceded a penalty as early as the second minute. Elliot Davey was
adjudged to have handled the ball when it was driven directly at him from
a short distance giving him no chance to avoid contact and Town’s Sam
Hartrey stepped up to comfortably place the resultant spot kick past
Pontyclun keeper Rhys Davies. There then followed a rather scrappy period
of play with the poor weather conditions not conducive to flowing
football.
Pontyclun
equalised on 38 minutes courtesy of a well taken goal from young striker
Andy Morris. Craig Williams fed Morris from a throw in and Morris turned
and shot in one movement from a position only yards from the goal line and
the ball looped over the home keeper to nestle into the far top corner of
the net.
The second
half proved one way traffic as Pontyclun took hold of the game aided by a
following wind. Ryan Blanche gave the visitors the lead from the spot
after he was brought down by a clumsy challenge from a home defender but
that was the last action seen by Blanche as he was immediately replaced by
Ross Hutchings. The move proved to be an inspired one from manager Phil
Preene as Hutchings proceeded to bag a brace of goals to emphasise Ponty’s
superiority on the day.
The first
came courtesy of a powerful shot from the edge of the area and the second
as a result of an easy tap in after the home keeper had missed a fly kick
and Hutchings ran past him and guided the ball home.
The match
saw the welcome return to action of coach Adrian James following his six
week absence, when he came on as a late substitute and his experience
could prove vital when Ponty entertain league leaders Garw at Ivor Park on
Saturday 9th December ko 2.00pm. This is followed by a trip to Ammanford
on the 16th December and then Ponty host Merthyr Saints on the 23rd
December.
Pontyclun: Rhys Davies, Eliot Davey, Simon Payne, Craig Williams,
Tyrone Pope, Barry Quinn (capt), John Rees, Carl Lewis, Ryan Blanche, Andy

Penrhiwceiber 2 - 1 Pontyclun
“Gutted” was
the word manager Phil Preene used whilst Captain Barry Quinn commented “If
this was a boxing match, the Penrhiwceiber coach would have thrown in the
towel”. Quite how Pontyclun returned pointless from their trip to the
Cynon valley remains a mystery but that exactly what happened.
From the off
the visitors played the better football and were superior in all areas of
the pitch. Ryan Blanche, Carl Lewis and Craig Williams controlled midfield
whilst Quinn and Tyrone Pope looked secure at the back. Neither side
created any real clear cut opportunities in the first half but it seemed
only a matter of time before Pontyclun stamped their authority on the game
with a goal.
Striker
Geraint Williams was dropping into deeper positions to pick up the ball
and causing the ‘Ceiber defence all sorts of problems. On the half hour
mark Lewis unleashed a tremendous effort from thirty yards which rebounded
off the crossbar leaving home keeper Danny Field clawing at fresh air. As
so often happens in these games when one side are so completely on top
the home team took the lead right on the stroke of half time when a cross
in from the right found ‘Ceiber midfielder Chris Keepings unmarked at the
far post and his cross shot gave Rhys Davies no chance.
From the
start of the second half Pontyclun battered the ‘Ceiber defence but chance
after chance went begging. Geraint Williams forced a wonder save from
Field in the opening minute and a Blanche free kick was scrambled clear at
the near post. Williams then threaded a great ball through to fellow
striker Andy Morris but his effort was kicked off the line by a home
defender.
Preene
reshuffled the pack with twenty minutes remaining when Ross Hutchings was
brought on for Morris and John Rees swapped positions with Elliott Davey
to bolster the midfield. Ten minutes later Pontyclun drew level after
being awarded a penalty. Williams played in Hutchings for a one on one
with Field and as the speedy front man rounded the keeper he was brought
down. The vociferous home crowd were adamant that the offence took place
outside the box and the ‘Ceiber coach was banished to the stand for his
continued protestations. Blanche however remained cool to place an assured
kick into the corner and set up a platform for Ponty to push for a winner.
However much
against the run of play it was the home side that snatched the points when
poor marking from a throw in left Richard Veale in space on the edge of
the Ponty area and he placed a firm shot past Davies.
Davies then
made an excellent save from a headed effort following a corner before
Hutchings had a great opportunity to level matters but his effort was a
poor one.
So, no
points for the ‘Clun but an excellent display amid difficult playing
conditions where wind and rain battered the Glassbrook Field all
afternoon. Next week Pontyclun entertain fellow ‘Cynon valley side
Llwydcoed at Ivor Park ko 2pm.

Treharris
Athletic 0 - 3 Pontyclun
Pontyclun
continued their recent run of good form with a well deserved win at
Treharris. Ponty were without Tyrone Pope and reshuffled their ranks
playing Jonathan Rees alongside Captain Barry Quinn and Wayne Morgan in a
back three and starting youngster Shaun Williams in a wing back berth.
Ponty played
the better football from the off but were restricted to two long range
efforts in the opening twenty minutes. Firstly Simon Payne lashed a twenty
five yarder into the side netting and then Geraint Williams sent another
way over the crossbar. Ponty thought they had the lead when a clever free
kick by Ryan Blanche sent Wayne Morgan clear down the left, Morgan’s low
cross was met by Andy Morris, who netted from close range, but the
celebrations were curtailed when the flag was raised for offside by
Morris. However minutes later they took a legitimate lead after tremendous
battling by Jonathan Rees resulted in a pass to Craig Williams, who scored
from outside the box with a fine shot that gave the keeper no chance.
Morris
should have made it 2-0 on the half hour, missing with a great chance, but
minutes later fellow striker Geraint Williams did double the lead when he
received the ball from a throw in and ran 20 yards unchallenged to slot
home into the corner.
Ponty then
suffered a blow when the classy Wayne Morgan pulled up with a torn
hamstring whilst in full throttle and it looks as if he may be out for a
number of weeks. Morgan was replaced by substitute Darren Webb and the
score remained at 2-0 when the break came.
Manager Phil
Preene demanded more of the same after half time and his team did not
disappoint. They remained on top throughout despite Treharris trying to
kick their way back into the game with some rather robust and illegal
challenges. The home side did muster one chance when their centre forward
hit the top of the bar from a cross cum shot from the far right touchline
but that apart, Ponty keeper Rhys Davies was a virtual spectator.
James
replaced the ineffective Morris with Ross Hutchings and shortly after
secured all three points courtesy of another goal from Geraint Williams.
The impressive Jonathan Rees played a ball through the Treharris defence
and when the vain appeals for offside were turned down, Williams waltzed
past home keeper Ryan Jones and placed the ball into the unguarded net.
Substitute
Hutchings could and should have made it four when put clean through but
blasted his effort a yard wide of the post with seconds remaining.
Outstanding
on the day were Jonathan Rees, Morgan, until his early exit and Craig
Williams in midfield with Williams just about edging the man of the match
accolade. On their return to the Athletic club, the team were greeted with
the news that their second string had beaten
Bridgend
Town seconds 2-0 with goals by Mathew James and Lee Dodd, son of ex
Pontyclun stalwart Gary Dodd.
Next week
Ponty have a tough game at
Garden
Village, Gorseinon, ko 2pm.

Pontyclun
2 - 1 Briton Ferry
Pontyclun continued
their fine recent run of form when securing a victory over Briton Ferry
Athletic at Ivor Park in a MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two clash.
Steady rain fell
throughout and both teams struggled early on as the ball pinged around on
the sodden surface, making control very difficult.
Chances were at a
premium in an evenly contested opening half hour with neither keeper being
called on to make a save of any note. Pontyclun’s best move of the half
saw Carl Lewis break down the right and his deep cross found Andy Morris
lurking at the far post but Morris’ headed effort just cleared the
crossbar.
Minutes after that
opportunity the hosts fell behind following a free kick conceded by Wayne
Morgan. Ferry played an innocuous looking ball into the Ponty area but a
poor clearance punch from keeper Rhys Davies resulted in the ball falling
at the feet of Ferry’s Richard Howells who had no difficulty in helping it
into an unguarded net. The goal was scored somewhat against the run of
play and Pontyclun went into the break 1-0 down after having the better of
the half.
Manager Phil Preene’s
half time talk certainly did the trick for the ‘Clun as they dominated
after the break and it took them only five minutes or so to draw level.
Carl Lewis had just sent a sizzler of a shot inches wide, when he was
unselfishly put in on goal by Geraint Williams, who could have shot
himself and Lewis gobbled up the chance to side foot past Ferry keeper
Rhys Jones.
With captain Barry
Quinn expertly marshalling a solid defence alongside his “lieutenants”
Pope and Morgan, Ponty pressed on for a winner. Ryan Blanche sent a
screamer yards wide from all of 25 yards out before Pontyclun replaced
striker Williams with Ross Hutchings. Within minutes of Hutchings coming
on, he had an excellent chance to equalise after Simon Payne’s shot was
blocked. The ball fell to pacey striker and after his first attempt was
blocked by keeper Jones the ball rebounded to him and he really should
have scored from the second opportunity. A great move down the left
involving Payne and Blanche put John Rees in on goal but Jones pulled off
another fine save.
Pontyclun then sent on
young Shaun Williams to replace an unhappy looking Carl Lewis who vented
his frustration at being substituted. However minutes later Pontyclun got
what proved to be the winner when excellent football carved open the Ferry
defence, allowing Andy Morris to cross to the near post where Hutchings
managed to turn the ball past Jones in the Ferry goal. This was the least
Ponty deserved for their second half domination and the three points saw
them climb out of the relegation zone.
Ponty now face three
away games on the trot starting with a visit to Treharris Athletic on
Saturday 4 November, ko 2.00pm.
Pontyclun:
Davies, Pope, Morgan, Quinn, C Williams, Payne, Blanche, Rees, Lewis, G
Williams, Morris Subs: Hutchings, S Williams.

Caldicot
Town 3 - 3 Pontyclun
Pontyclun
snatched a point at Caldicot Town with the aid of a last minute penalty.
After an hours play, any sort of result for Ponty looked impossible as the
home side swept into a 3-0 lead but the Clun lads kept their heads,
continued to play good football and their reward was an excellent draw.
Ponty
welcomed back Tyrone Pope after missing the win over Bettws because of his
participation in the Cardiff marathon and he took his place alongside
Barry Quinn and Wayne Morgan at the heart of the defence. However the
defensive unit was breached as early as the fourth minute when keeper Rhys
Davies could only parry a shot and the ball fell to the feet of Caldicot’s
Peter Little, who fired into the corner of the net.
Ponty nearly
equalised minutes later following a Ryan Blanche corner kick when the ball
found Quinn on the six yard line, but his effort was blocked and the ball
was finally cleared for another corner after ricocheting around the
Caldicot goalmouth.
The visitors
created their best chance after good link up play between Blanche and
Craig Williams put Geraint Williams through but his effort was rather weak
and was comfortably dealt with by the home keeper.
Ponty went
2-0 down on 40 minutes when Morgan conceded a penalty after a harsh
decision by Pontypridd referee Craig Greenstock, who was not having the
best of matches and Town’s David Lloyd gave Rhys Davies little chance from
the spot.
Ponty then
ended the half well and created a series of chances with Both Craig and
Geraint Williams having shots well saved and Andy Morris missing with a
header that he really should have scored from.
Caldicot
started brightly after the break and went further in front on the hour
when Ponty were carved open down their right hand side and a low cross in
from Peter Little found Town’s Mark Williams sliding in on Davies’ goal.
Davies managed to block his shot but the ball rebounded back off him and
found the head of Williams and he somehow managed to find the net despite
lying on the pitch after his first effort.
The visitors
were thrown a lifeline shortly after when Jonathan Rees headed in from a
corner to make it 3-1 but Caldicot then had several half chances to extend
their lead and as it transpired, they would rue the missed opportunities.
Ponty boss
Adrian James brought on subs Shaun Williams and Carl Lewis for Morris and
Elliot Davey to add fresh legs to the effort but it took until the 90th
minute to get a breakthrough when Geraint Williams prodded home at the
near post following a good move down the left.
With time
fast running out and with only moments left, Craig Williams was brought
down in the box and Ryan Blanche kept his cool and put the spot kick right
in the corner of the net.
