MAESTEG WAITING ON A CUP REPRIEVE
|
27 September 2006 |
| Maesteg
Park are set to be reinstated into the Welsh Cup. The Old Parish side,
who went down to a 3-1 defeat against Cardiff Corries at the Riverside
on September 16, have since learnt that the Cardiff side fielded a
player without international clearance.
Rhys Yates, the former
Taffs Well player who got the Cardiff side's second goal, had only
just returned from playing in the United States.
However, as the Football Association of Wales organising committee are
not meeting until next Tuesday, the intended tie between Cwmbran
Celtic and Cardiff Corries on Saturday has been called off.
If Park are thrown a lifeline, then a date will have to set up for
them to travel to Cwmbran Celtic.
However, the matter does not end there for Corries as they also
included Yates in league fixtures and the Shamrock Travel Cup.
In all likelihood, they will also be removed from the cup in favour of
Uwic while 10 league points are set to be docked.
In a separate move, another second division club, Penrhiwceiber, are
also likely to find themselves in hot water.
The Cynon Valley side have allegedly included a sine die player in
their team this season, and a possible scenario is that all seven
league points currently against their name will be removed.

SHOCK DEFEAT SEES ATHLETIC LEAD CUT AT
THE TOP |
25 September 2006 |
| Neath
Athletic saw their lead at the top of the first division cut to just
one point after losing 3-1 at Taffs Well. Things looked good for the
Llandarcy Park side when Jonathan Keaveny gave them an early lead, but
Brian Burke equalised just before the break.
The Cardiff side went on
to dominate the second half and deservedly took the spoils on the back
of two late goals from substitute Liam Williams.
Up into second spot went Bryntirion courtesy of a 3-0 win at Ely
Rangers, thanks to goals from Gavin Thomas, Ian Gearie and Sean
Cronin.
However, champions Goytre United remain handily placed after gaining a
thumping 5-0 home victory over basement club Barry Town.
The Port Talbot side made it three wins from as many starts on the
back of a Darren Lyons hat-trick together with a brace from Richard
Ryan.
Pontardawe Town registered a third league win of the season,
accounting for Grange Quins 2-0.
Darren Griffiths shot Ponty ahead during the opening half while a
Richard Cleverly strike midway through the second wrapped up a
deserved victory.
Maesteg Park struck early in sweeping to an emphatic 3-0 victory over
Croesyceiliog at Tudor Park. The Old Parish side, who paraded new
signings Chris Pridham and Andrew Pearson, went ahead through Lee
O'Brien after just 20 seconds.
Paul Evans doubled the lead in the 34th minute with Gareth Davies
completing the scoring.
In the second division, Garden Village seemed on course for victory
when heading leaders Troedyrhiw 3-0 after 25 minutes - only to be held
3-3.
During a Village purple patch, a goal double from Rob Shannon along
with an Ashley Richards strike took them clear, and it wasn't until
the hour mark that the Merthyr side launched the fightback.
For a second time this season, Pontyclun made West End work hard for
victory before conceding victory to the Swansea side 2-1.
Having eliminated the Ivor Park side from the Shamrock Travel Cup
earlier in the month, the Pryderi boys were one up at the break
through Gary Davies.
An 83rd-minute debut goal from Marc Otten, who converted a Richard
Jones cross, made it 2-0 while Pontyclun responded during injury time.
Briton Ferry, who have announced former youth team manager Neil Morgan
as their new boss, celebrated with a 2-0 success over Merthyr Saints.
A scrambled goal from Keith Phillips sent Ferry ahead in the 25th
minute while Phillips's clincher in the 70th minute was an opportunist
effort.
"I'm confident this young side can do well," said Morgan after Ferry
celebrated a fourth league win of the campaign.
Ammanford took the derby clash against Morriston at the Recreation
Ground 1-0 on the strength of a 28th-minute goal from Luke Fayers.
Though well served in defence by 16-year-old debutant centre-back
Cerrith Williams, the Rice Roaders came under late pressure and the
Dingle side's new manager Paul Lewis reflected on three missed
chances.
Adam Shields and Samuel Bradburn both netted as Garw defeated
Penrhiwceiber 2-1 at Blandy to maintain a 100 per cent record.
In the third division, Llangeinor protected their unbeaten record -
and took over at the top from Llanwern - after taking the derby clash
with Porthcawl 3-1 at Lock's Lane.
Dean Vokes shot Llan in front with Lee Giles making it 1-1 at the
interval, but the Ogmore Valley side kicked on with goals from Dai
Lewis and ex-Swan Damian Lacey wrapping up a sixth straight win.
One of the best wins of the day was registered by Llansawel, who
returned from AFC Porth with a 2-1 victory.
Steve Jones gave Sawel the lead in the 65th minute and although Porth
equalised, substitute Rob Cann engineered an excellent winner for
Anthony Walsh.
Seven Sisters took the basement battle with Gwynfi United 2-1 but
there wasn't much to chose between the sides.
Goals from Gareth Benns and Chris Herdman opened up a 2-0 gap for
Seven, but the Cape side rallied on the back of a Luke Williams
penalty and then went close to equalising.
There was no joy for Cwmamman, 4-0 losers at Cwmbran Celtic, while
Ystradgynlais suffered a 4-3 home defeat at the hands of Newcastle
Emlyn. Ystrad briefly led through the game's opener from Chris
Courtney but although Craig Hopkins netted twice, it wasn't to be.

WILLIAMS HEADS FOR PONTARDAWE
|
22 September 2006 |
|
Pontardawe Town are set to sign Cwmamman striker Stephen Williams
ahead of tomorrow's MacWhirter Welsh League first division clash with
Grange Quins at the Recreation Ground. Williams took in a spell with
Ammanford last season before returning to Grenig Park, and this season
the ex-Garden Village and Skewen man has already netted six times for
Cwmamman.
Williams will arrive
just as Pontardawe have parted company with striker Mark Dunford.
Leaders Neath Athletic have both defender Steve Evans and striker
Mattie Rees back for the showdown at Taffs Well, but a fitness test
will be run on ex-West End defender Danny Kavanagh.
Goytre United are involved for only a third time in the league this
season, welcoming Barry Town to Glenhafod Park.
Defender Thomas Meiring has recovered from injury but managers Craig
Duggan and Andrew Radford could be without both Paul Lenihan and Ian
Turner, who are both only rated 50-50.
Goytre have announced that next week's home Welsh Cup second-round tie
with West End will be staged on Friday evening (7.15pm).
Maesteg Park will be without four key players against Croesyceiliog at
Tudor Park, but manager Andrew Rickard is hoping to have two new
players on view.
Kyle Morris picked up an ankle injury during last week's Welsh Cup
loss at Cardiff Corries and is ruled out; defender Leighton Jones
starts a three-match suspension while neither Lee Michael nor Nicky
Cole is available.
Afan Lido launch the programme tonight, challenging Caerleon at the
Marston Stadium, but the Seasiders will be without Justin Williams,
John Felton and Carl Edwards.
Williams has broken a leg, resulting in a two-month absence, but on
the plus side Stephen Parry and Greg Hurley are fully fit.
In the second division, West End will be looking towards a quickfire
double against Pontyclun at Ivor Park.
Having eliminated Pontyclun from the Shamrock Travel Cup at Pryderi
Park earlier in the month, the Swansea side might parade summer
acquisition Marc Otten, who is now suspension free.
New Morriston manager Paul Lewis could have two new players in his
squad for the clash at Ammanford.
He is hoping to complete the transfers of midfield pairing Andrew Shaw
and Gary Taylor from Neath while defenders Carl James and Leighton
Connor -- who both missed the splendid 3-1 cup victory at Cambrian &
Clydach - are back in the selection frame.
However, Ammanford boss Neil Rees has already ruled out defenders John
Garland, Terrance Ward and Steve Thomas along with midfield player
Dean Jenkins while James Murray is doubtful.
One of the positives for the Rice Roaders is that long-term injury
victim Emyr Jones is likely to make a delayed return from the bench.
Briton Ferry, whose fixture with Merthyr Saints has been switched to
Old Road, were due to appoint a new manager last night.
Whoever takes over might have to do without Paul Morgan, who commenced
studies this week at Uwic, as his availability is uncertain.
In the third division, two clubs battling for first league victories
of the season - Seven Sisters and Gwynfi - lock horns at the Welfare
Ground.
Seven have Chris Herdman back in the fold on a permanent basis while
Huw Pascoe will replace unavailable Simon Hanford.
Life for Cwmamman after Stephen Williams begins at high-flying Cwmbran
Celtic while Ystradgynlais have Carl Evans suspended for their home
game with Newcastle Emlyn.
Llansawel hope to have striker Lee Fleming in their line-up at AFC
Porth, but Andrew Cann is doubtful because of a hamstring problem.

MORRISTON TURN IT ON FOR THEIR NEW BOSS
|
18 September 2006 |
|
Paul Lewis began his reign as Morriston Town manager
with a deserved 3-1 win at second division rivals Cambrian & Clydach
in the first round of the Welsh Cup. His arrival back at the Dingle
following an 18-month stay at Garden Village followed the recent
departures of Michael Ellery and Dean Beniamous.
''The club will for ever
be grateful to both Michael and Dean for all their hard work, and we
were delighted to be able to secure our first-choice candidate Paul
Lewis,'' said Morriston general secretary Mike Rogers.
''And for the boys to go out and get a good win at Cambrian has got
his reign off to a flying start.''
A 25th-minute header from Michael Chapman put the Dingle men ahead in
the Rhondda, while a Michael Gammon cross was turned into goal on the
hour.
And the game was all up for Cambrian once Paul Sweeny was dragged down
in the box, and Chapman converted the ensuing penalty.
Lewis's old club Garden Village marched into the next round on
Saturday week with a thumping 6-0 success over AFC Llwydcoed at
Stafford Common.
Steve Devonald opened the scoring and a brace from Steve Evans made it
3-0 at the break, and another scoring pulse hit the Cynon Valley side
on the resumption.
Straight from the restart Rob Shannon netted, and after Llwydcoed
again squandered possession, Shannon got a second goal in the space a
minute.
A Luke Davies own goal saw Llwydcoed hit for six and Village completed
a good day by announcing the arrival of midfield ace Del James from
second division rivals Garw.
Neath Athletic once more struggled at Aberaman, but the Llandarcy Park
side just managed to win the day 2-1.
Having been held 2-2 at the ground in the league last month, Neath
went a goal down, only for young centre-back Lee Bevan to equalise
just before the break.
The winner was carved out by Cynon Valley boy Jarrod Price, whose
tantalising run ended in sharp-shooting Carl Shaw knocking in a
70th-minute winner.
Afan Lido's improving form saw them gain a comfortable 3-1 victory
over Penrhiwceiber at the Marston Stadium.
Ian Jones set up a 21st-minute strike for John Felton, while in the
approach to half-time Liam McCreesh and Karl Lewis carved out a
well-taken goal for Jones.
However, Ceiber pulled back to 2-1 at the interval thanks to Andrew
Workman, and it wasn't until the 91st minute that Lido completed the
scoring via McCreesh.
A late burst of scoring carried Pontardawe Town to a 4-1 success over
plucky Porthcawl Town at the Recreation Ground.
The tie was goalless until a header from Gareth Griffiths put the
Seasiders ahead in the 75th minute - but the lead lasted less than a
minute.
Richard Cleverly and Jamie Rickard engineered an equaliser for Steve
Davies, and three goals in the last 10 minutes via Stuart Hoskins,
Richard Cleverly (penalty) and Chris Gardner saw Ponty home.
West End required extra-time before claiming a 4-2 victory over third
division AFC Porth at Dinas Park.
A goal adrift after 20 minutes, the Pryderi Park boys levelled through
yet another Anthony Wright penalty, while Neil Phillips drilled home a
free-kick just before the interval.
However, Porth equalised midway through the second half, taking the
tie into extra-time, and last-gasp goals from Anthony Wright and
Andrew Tyrrell saw the Townhill side safely through.
Extra-time was also the order of the day as Ammanford progressed with
a 4-3 penalty victory over visiting Pontyclun.
Dean Jenkins sent the Rice Roaders ahead in the 25th minute but it was
1-1 at 90 minutes and after extra-time. Penalties from Liam Preece,
Adam Dart and Cerison Davies settled the issue.
However, managerless Briton Ferry bowed out 1-0 against Betws at Old
Road, Nathan Hosgood hitting a 67th-minute winner.
Two games went ahead in the third division of the MacWhirter Welsh
League, with Ystradgynlais twice ahead during a 2-2 outcome with
Chepstow at Ynyscedwyn Road.
A second-minute goal from Ystrad's Michael Whapham was cancelled out
by a Michael Davies penalty after Nicholas Maggs brought down Davies
in the box.
A 35th-minute header from Whapham sent Ystrad back in front, but soon
after Dan Savage equalised, and there was no scoring during the second
period.
Llansawel suffered a double blow against Risca at Cwrt Herbert, losing
2-1 and having defender Stuart Williams stretchered off with a broken
leg.
Sawel were 2-0 down when Williams was injured and although Rob Cann
pulled a goal back, it wasn't to be.

LEE FACES LATE FITNESS BATTLE FOR
ATHLETIC |
15 September 2006 |
| Neath
Athletic are hoping to have young centre-back Lee Bevan fit for
tomorrow's tie at first division rivals Aberaman.
Bevan was victim of a
horrendous challenge during last Saturday's 6-1 cup victory over
Monmouthshire side Goytre FC at Plough Road, and the ankle injury he
sustained makes him doubtful against Aberaman. Danny Kavanagh will
miss the tie, having returned at Goytre only to suffer recurring ankle
problems.
The situation in defence for Llandarcy Park boss Andrew Dyer is
heightened as Carmarthen Town do not want Liam Hancock cup-tied.
Sammy Misbah and Christopher Vardon, who both showed up well at
Goytre, are likely to be retained, while Andy Hill is set for another
cameo from the bench.
Paul Fowler is set to return as Neath hope to improve on the 2-2
league draw they achieved at Aberaman last month.
Afan Lido are bracing themselves for a cup backlash from
Penrhiwceiber, the Shamrock Travel Cup holders bowing out in the first
round last week against Cwmbran Celtic at the Glassbrook.
The Seasiders welcome back Liam McCreesh from birthday celebrations,
but on the downside they will be without Carl Edwards, Greg Hurley,
Stephen Parry, Chris Piper and Daniel Williams.
Briton Ferry caretaker manager Neil Morgan has an option to restore
experienced striker Jeremy Walsh to the side for their home tie
against Betws.
Walsh required eight stitches in a mouth wound against Ammanford last
month, and was restricted to the bench during last Saturday's 2-0 home
cup win over Cwmamman.
Garden Village manager Robert Lloyd brings in former Morriston
goalkeeper Dale Hulland for the suspended Stuart Lloyd, while Jamie
Evans and Neil Simon are both back on squad duty for their tie with
AFC Llwydcoed at Stafford Common.
Ammanford are set to reintroduce Emyr Jones from the bench at home
against second division colleagues Pontyclun.
Jones has been sidelined for a year with a serious knee problem and
also set to return is Dean Jenkins, who missed the 5-2 home win over
Chepstow.
Pontardawe Town welcome back Richard Cleverly against Porthcawl at the
Recreation Ground, while West End boss Donny Smitham is hoping Anthony
Wright has recovered from a hamstring pull and will figure at AFC
Porth.
Morriston make a first visit to Cambrian and Clydach, while Maesteg
Park face Cardiff Corries at the Riverside.
Maesteg manager Andrew Rickard will probably recall top scorer Robbie
Walters, who had to settle for a place on the bench during the 1-0 win
at Garw last Saturday, while he is waiting on the fitness of Andrew
Davies (groin strain).
Meanwhile, there are two rearranged fixtures in the third division
with local interest attached to them - Llansawel home to Risca and the
visit of Chepstow Town to Ystradgynlais.
Experienced Richard Weller is set to make a first start of the season
for Llansawel and player-coach Paul Carpenter is also set to resume.
David Mills, however, is ruled out while Martin Griffiths is the
likely deputy for unavailable goalkeeper Dai Nott.
Ystrad, still without a league win this season, will look to break
their duck without Nicky Watkins.

14 September 2006 |
| Two derby
ties stand out in the second round of the Welsh League's Shamrock

advantage over neighbours Afan Lido. Neath Athletic meet Llantwit
Fardre for the first time at Central Park, while Llansawel and
Ystradgynlais have been paired at home against third division
colleagues Cwmbran Celtic and Llangeinor respectively, and Pontardawe
entertain Llanwern.

ELLERY QUITS HIS POST AT THE DINGLE
|
11 September 2006 |
| One of
the longest-serving managers on the MacWhirter Welsh League scene has
stood down.
Michael Ellery and his
assistant Dean Beniamous resigned as managers of second division
Morriston on the weekend. A difference with the committee led to
Ellery packing his bags, having helped to turnaround the fortunes of
the Dingle club over the past six years.
''I couldn't live with the stance that the Morriston committee
adopted, as it related to selection and I felt that was my domain,''
said Ellery.
He added: ''In the end it came down to a back me or sack me situation,
and I had no alternative but to stand down.''
Ellery became the second casualty of the week on the second division
circuit as earlier Paul Barrow, Richard Gay and Morrys Scott all stood
down as managers at Briton Ferry.

GOYTRE GIVE VILLAGE SIX OF THE BEST
|
11 September 2006 |
| In what
proved a tale of two Goytres, the Port Talbot side scored six goals
while the Monmouthshire version were hit for six.
United gained a thumping
6-0 home success over Garden Village, who had goalkeeper Stuart Lloyd
sent off in the 20th minute for bringing down Richard Ryan outside the
box. Dai Rimmer took over in goal with strikes from Luke Bowen and
Ryan making it 2-0 at the break.
Ryan went on to complete a hat-trick while two late goals from Darren
Lyons completed a satisfactory afternoon for the 2005 winners.
But third-division Goytre crashed to a 6-1 defeat against Neath
Athletic at Plough Lane - Jarrod Price (two), Lee Bevan, Andy Hill,
Jonathan Keaveny and Carl Shaw were all on target.
But Llandarcy Park chief Andrew Dyer was red carded, following an
altercation with referee Paul Lewis.
Afan Lido also hit the jackpot; defeating first-division rivals
Newport YMCA, 5-2, at the Marston Stadium.
The Seasiders cruised into a 4-0 lead at the break thanks to goals
from Ian Jones (two), John Felton and Craig Jones.
Carl Evans made it five on the resumption and although YMCA responded
via Sean Pearce and Sean Perdue, it was Lido's day.
Ammanford launched their excellent new facilities at the town's
Recreation Centre with a similar 5-2 win over Chepstow.
Luke Fayers opened the scoring while Liam Preece converted a penalty,
but Chepstow pulled back to 2-2 at the break.
However, the Rice Roaders kicked for home during the second half,
making progress on the back of further goals from Cerison Davies,
Fayers and Adam Dart.
Pontardawe Town, losing finalists for the last two seasons, triumphed
2-0 over Dinas Powys at the Murch Field.
The tie was goalless until the 75th minute when Craig Connor was
felled in the box, and Darren Griffiths converted the penalty.
And with the Cardiff side chasing the tie, Griffiths wrapped things up
in the 88th minute on the end of a Jamie Rickard pass.
Briton Ferry, who saw the management team of Paul Barrow, Richard Gay
and Morrys Scott, depart earlier in the week, put their troubles
behind them to beat Cwmamman 2-0 at Old Road.
Lee Parfitt converted a Richard Howell cross in the 20th minute while
Parfitt's fifth goal of the campaign sealed victory midway through the
second half.
A lone goal from Lee O'Brien was good enough to earn Maesteg Park a
1-0 victory over Garw at Blandy. A defensive error set up O'Brien in
the 57th minute, and he shot past John Chorley in the home goal from
the edge of the box.
In another of the day's big derby clashes, Ystradgynlais gained a
slender 2-1 home win over Seven Sisters.
Barry Herdman gave Seven the lead with Liam Soroka levelling just
before half time.
Soroka then turned provider in the 55th minute when Michael Whapham
headed home his flag-kick.
West End came from a goal down to beat second division colleagues
Pontyclun, 3-1, at Pryderi Park.
Neil Phillips got the Townhill side back on terms, and they eventually
tasted victory thanks to goals from Gary Davies and Richard Jones.
Gwynfi United went in front through Thomas Price only to lose 4-1
against Abertillery at the Cape while another third division team,
Llangeinor, pulled off the result of the round.
The Bridgend side beat first division outfit Ton Pentre, 3-2, despite
trailing 2-0 at the break.
Goals from Alyn Jones (penalty) and Steve Conaty led to the Bulldogs
having their tails up, but Llan hit back through Dean Vokes, Dai Lewis
and Lloyd Griffiths to seal a famous win.
Tredegar caused a shockwave in the Bridgend suburbs, defeating first
division Bryntirion 1-0 through Richard Langley, while Bridgend
required extra-time to overcome Barry Town, 2-1.
Michael Hartley gave Bridgend the lead but Zack Misbah, reappearing
for Barry from Neath, levelled in the 88th minute.
A late goal from Drew Fahiya eventually took Bridgend into tomorrow's
second-round draw.

BARROW CALLS TIME AT FERRY
|
08 September 2006 |
| Paul
Barrow has resigned as manager at second division Briton Ferry ahead
of tomorrow's home tie with Cwmamman.
Having been associated
with the Old Road club for seven years, Barrow became manager when
Steve Price departed towards the end of last season. Also exiting Old
Road are assistant manager Richard Gay and coach Morrys Scott along
with goalkeeper Alex Davies, leaving youth team manager Neil Morgan in
charge on a caretaker basis.
''Personal circumstances led to my position becoming untenable, but it
is a sad day for me as the club had become part of my life,'' said
Barrow.
Briton Ferry secretary Martyn Thomas said: ''We are sorry to see all
three men go, and thank them for all the hard work they had put into
the club.''
Goalkeeper Davies is being linked with both Neath Athletic and West
End. Rhys Jones takes over in goal against Cwm.
The Grenig Park side welcome back strikers Luke Rice and Keith Dainton,
but goalkeeper Dai Thomas is moving to Trostre.
Neath, who make a first visit to third division Goytre FC, have
allowed Zack Misbah to sign for Barry Town while teenage defender Gary
Taylor is set to go to Morriston.
Manager Andrew Dyer is expected to ring the changes with Simon Dyer,
Jarrod Price, Chris Vardon and Andy Hill all in his selection
equation.
Goytre United have former Pontardawe defender Ian Morgan back from
suspension at home against Garden Village.
Ian Turner is doubtful with a groin strain, while Thomas Meiring is
still on the injured list.
Village boss Robert Lloyd has added striker Ashley Richards to his
squad along with recent acquisition Steve Devonald.
Pontardawe travel to Dinas Powys in one of three all top-flight
clashes.
The Swansea Valley outfit have experienced campaigners Steve Crabbe
and Steven Cox back in the selection mix.
Afan Lido will be looking to get past Newport YMCA at the Marston
Stadium.
The Seasiders lose four players - Greg Hurley, Ian Jones, Chris Piper
and Daniel Williams - from the side that won 3-0 at Grange Quins last
time out.
Likely to return to the starting line-up are Shaun O'Leary and Craig
Jones.
West End have signed front man Carl Mainwaring from Pontardawe, and he
goes straight into the team for the clash with Pontyclun at Pryderi
Park.
But captain Wayne Jones is attending a wedding, Anthony Wright is
ruled out with a hamstring pull while his brother, Ashley, will
undergo a fitness test.
Ystradgynlais host third division colleagues Seven Sisters in one of
the many derby clashes that the draw produced.
Expected to return to the Ystrad side are striker Craig Hopkins and
Ynysygerwn cricketer Nicholas Maggs.
Ammanford, who are home to Chepstow, use new facilities in the town's
Recreation Centre for a first time.
Goalkeeper Richard Walton returns from suspension while Luke Fayers,
who netted in the 1-1 draw at Treharris last week, will be looking to
improve on an already impressive goal tally.
Summer recruit Adam Dart is drafted into the squad, but Dean Jenkins
is ruled out through injury.
Maesteg Park have striker Andrew Davies and defender Richard Stevens
out for their derby with Garw at Blandy.
A derby theme also ran through Park's 2-0 home league victory over
Bryntirion in midweek with Robbie Walters getting both goals, one from
the penalty spot.
Gwynfi United, who welcome Abertillery to the Cape, will be bidding
for a first win of the season.
Llansawel launch the cup weekend, challenging second division Merthyr
Saints at Cwrt Herbert tonight (7.30pm).
Last year's Neath and District League champions hope to add strikers
Lee Fleming and Rob Cann to their squad, but centre-back Wayne
Holloway is ruled out with a groin strain.

KEAVENY'S LATE STRIKE KEEPS ATHLETIC ON
TRACK |
04 September 2006 |
| Both
early-season pacemakers Neath Athletic and champions Goytre United
were made to work hard for 1-0 away victories. Neath prevailed over
Caerleon at Cold Bath Road thanks to an early strike from former
Swansea City man Jonathan Keaveny.
Neat passing from Jock
Fairbairn, Carl Jenkins and Ryan Frankcom led to Keaveny netting his
fourth goal of the season.
However, Goytre left things late in sealing victory at Aberaman with
John Meacock their goal-scoring hero in the 89th minute.
A one-two with Kevin Bartley ended with Meacock driving the ball home
in dynamic fashion from 25 metres.
Improving Afan Lido made it three wins on the trot with a 3-0 success
over Grange Quins at the Leckwith Stadium.
Greg Hurley shot the Seasiders ahead in the 20th minute with John
Felton doubling the lead midway through the half. It remained 2-0
until late on when substitute Craig Jones rounded off a satisfactory
afternoon's work.
Pontardawe Town came from behind to card a morale boosting 3-1 home
win over troubled UWIC.
Though John Howells shot the students in front early on, Ponty
levelled right on half-time through Richard Cleverly.
A pinpoint cross from ex-Neath youngster Steve Davies resulted in
Craig Connor firing Ponty ahead on the hour while Connor wrapped
things up in the 89th-minute thanks to Emad Othman.
Maesteg Park conceded late during a 2-1 defeat against fancied
Pontypridd at Ynysangharad Park.
An own-goal from Richard Stevens sent Ponty ahead after half an hour
with Park levelling in the 70th minute.
Substitute Gareth Davies headed past goalkeeper Mark Poole, but a
speculative shot soon after from Geza Hajgato - against one of his
many former clubs - settled the issue.
Goal braces from Jonathan Cuss and Scott Lanyon gained Bryntirion an
exciting 4-2 home win over Newport YMCA while two goals from Michael
Parkin and a Lee Pratt strike secured Bridgend Town a 3-0 away victory
at Barry Town.
West End hit the goal trail with a vengeance at AFC Llwydcoed, running
out 5-1 winners.
The Townhill side led 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Gary
Davies, Dean Rosselli and a third successive Anthony Wright penalty.
They rounded off a sound team display with further goals from Neil
Phillips and Christopher Hole.
Briton Ferry squandered a two-goal lead with just 20 minutes remaining
during a 3-2 home defeat against Cambrian & Clydach.
Two goals from Keith Phillips have Ferry on cruise control, but
victory hopes were then shipwrecked by defensive errors.
Ammanford were full value for a 1-1 draw at Treharris with Dean
Jenkins giving the Rice Roaders an early lead.
Ammanford goalkeeper Craig Morris, deputising for suspended Richie
Walton, saved a first-half penalty, but Treharris levelled two minutes
into the second half.
Christian Burge struck after just five minutes as high-flying Garw won
1-0 against Morriston at the Dingle.
New signing Steve Devonald impacted from the bench as Garden Village
were held to 2-2 by visiting Cardiff Corries.
Derek Jenkins got the opening Village goal, but on the hour mark the
Cardiff side were 2-1 ahead.
However, the introduction of Devonald led to him scoring a cracking
68th-minute equaliser.
Llansawel took the derby clash with Seven Sisters 2-0 in the third
division via goals from Craig Catterson and a Simon Hanford own-goal.
Cwmamman led 2-0 in the 65th minute only to lose 5-2 to Chepstow Town.
Stephen Williams's brace had Cwm in the driving seat, but they
switched off and paid a high price.
Ystradgynlais pieced together one of their poorest showings for many
seasons in losing 4-1 against visiting Pentwyn Dynamos - Michael
Whapham getting a consolation goal.
Goals from Craig Phillips and Jonathan Quigley set up a 2-0 home
victory for unbeaten Llangeinor over AFC Porth while Porthcawl lost
3-2 against leaders Llanwern. Goals from Tony Shier, Marcus Powell and
Matt Currie sent the Steelmen clear, but the Seasiders finished
strongly with Gareth Griffiths and Gareth Duffy both netting.
The clash between Gwynfi United and Goytre FC was postponed, owing to
the wet state of the Cape.

NEATH DEALT MIXED
INJURY NEWS AHEAD OF AWAY TRIP |
01 September 2006 |
|
Early-season pacemakers Neath Athletic have defender Lee Bevan back in
their squad for tomorrow's clash with Caerleon at Cold Bath Road.
Bevan replaces Steve Evans, who was sent off during the 5-1 win at
Grange Quins last Friday, while Carmarthen Town's Liam Hancock is once
more available.
Rob Folland is back on
duty but summer recruit Chris Vardon's comeback game during a midweek
reserve match was limited to just 20 minutes.
Ex-West End defender Danny Kavanagh is sidelined by ligament damage,
but free-scoring Andy Hill has resumed light training following hernia
trouble.
Champions Goytre United, away to newly-promoted Aberaman, once more
have Ian Morgan and Thomas Meiring missing in what is only their
second engagement of the season.
Afan Lido, buoyed by successive victories over Aberaman and Uwic, have
several players missing for their clash with Grange Quins at the
Leckwith Stadium.
Chris Piper (knee ligament damage) is added to an injury list also
containing Craig Jones, Shaun O'Leary and Stephen Parry.
But Justin Williams is back from suspension, and Carl Evans is also
available for selection.
Pontardawe have parted company with striker Layton Thomas ahead of
their home game with Uwic.
The clash forms a major test of resolve for Dai Rees's side against an
Uwic team that last week suffered consecutive Neath-Port Talbot
defeats at both Neath Athletic and Afan Lido.
There are fitness doubts surrounding both Steven Cox and Stuart
Hoskins but on a positive note, former West End striker Darren
Griffiths has been declared fit.
Maesteg Park have Ynysygerwn cricketer Kieran Howells suspended for
their encounter with Pontypridd Town in Ynysangharad Park.
William Alston again covers for absent Gary Wager.
Briton Ferry host Cambrian & Clydach with Richard Colwill, Carl
Harris, Dean Morris and Ross Morgan all returning to the squad.
But Cameron Hopkins, Richard South, Richard Gay and Jeremy Walsh have
all been marked absent.
Garden Village have Dafen cricketer Jamie Mansell back for their home
game with improved Cardiff Corries.
Hoping to make a first start of the season is striker Ashley Richards,
following suspension, while Michael Harvey and Mark Lloyd give Village
chief Bob Lloyd a pleasant selection problem.
West End will run a fitness test on Rory Smitham ahead of their
encounter at AFC Llwydcoed.
Young Smitham missed the 2-1 defeat against Troedyrhiw at the Willows
last Saturday, while Marc Otten is still suspended.
Morriston have defender Leighton Connor back for their home clash with
high-flying Garw.
But Dingle boss Michael Ellery, who is expected to name his assistant
Dean Beniamous on the team-sheet, has fitness doubts in defence
surrounding both Tommy Todd and Carl James.
Ammanford bring in Craig Morris for the suspended Richie Walton for
their trip to Treharris Athletic.
Steve Thomas has a foot injury that is likely to sideline him for a
fortnight, but there is a possibility of captain Cerison Davies making
a first appearance of the season.
In the third division, Ystradgynlais will once more be under-strength
for the visit of Pentwyn Dynamos.
Striker Craig Hopkins sits out a final suspension, and also ruled out
are two other big players - Robbie Daniels and Nicky Maggs.
Llansawel hope to have player-coach Paul Carpenter, Andrew Cann and
Lee Thomas back for their derby clash with Seven Sisters at Cwrt
Herbert.
Gwynfi United will be bidding for a first league win of the season
against Gwent side Goytre FC at the Cape with Cwmamman looking to make
home advantage count against Chepstow Town.
Two unbeaten sides clash at Lock's Lane, with Porthcawl Town taking on
Llanwern.
