Caerau (Ely) 0 – 2 ENTO Aberaman Athletic

Pre-season friendly

from ENTO Aberaman Athletic

ENTO Aberaman travelled to Caerau (Ely) to play the second of their pre- season friendlies and came away with a 2-0 win.

Manager David Morgan changed things around for the game starting with Kift and Summers on the bench and starting with Jon Phillips and Mattie Davies up front.

Jon Phillips got on the end of a good move and slotted past the advancing Caerau keeper to give a 1-0 lead, on 22 minutes it was Phillips who was upended in the box and got up to take the penalty, but a superb save kept the scoreline at 1-0. ENTO were knocking the ball around well and a thigh strain for Dan Hopper saw ENTO introduce Dale Laver and he settled in well in to the role given to him. A great through ball by Danny Street to Mattie Davies who hit a great shot to make the score 2-0.

Second half and there were no immediate changes as ENTO looked to build on a good performance, Caerau (Ely) were enjoying some good possession but could not get passed a stubborn defence of Mike Jones, Gareth Jones and Anthony Taylor. Neil Davies and Dean Morris were rolling back the years in the middle of the park and were to physically strong for some young but talented Caerau players.

Summers and Kift were introduced and it was not long before a great chance was squandered by Summers who beat the keeper but his shot was blocked. Kift had two shots that were hit wide before the referee called a halt to the night’s game that was a great run out for both clubs.

Manager David Morgan while pleased with the result and the performance of Gareth Jones and Danny Street and the emerging Dale Laver, will also be concerned at the two knocks that were picked up by Dan Hopper and Craig Hewings.

This Saturday ENTO travel to Sully Sports, kick off:  2.30pm

Ton Pentre 2-3 Monmouth Town

Pre-season Friendly

from Ton Pentre FC

The Rhondda Bulldogs were defeated at Ynys Park in their second match of the pre-season by Gwent club Monmouth Town.

Ton’s visitors were promoted to the MacWhirter Welsh League Division Three for the 2007-08 season from the Gwent County Senior League and the club, who are nicknamed the Kingfishers, can be proud of their performance.

Ton Pentre were without several key players for this friendly match with Andrew Hughes, Mark Crutch, Scott Hayward and Alyn Jones amongst those missing from the team due to different reasons. As a result striker Andrew Pearson was forced to play in defence for this match.

Despite this Ton Pentre started well and came close to scoring after 11 minutes when Jacob Daly’s pace up the left saw him gain possession of the ball and cross into the penalty area where Jamal Roberts, who spent last season with Taffs Well, was in place to head a shot towards goal. Unfortunately for the midfielder he directed the ball just over the crossbar.

Roberts was involved again ten minutes later when his sweet pass out to Phil Clarke on the wing allowed his team mate to strike at goal. Monmouth’s goalkeeper was alert to the effort and pulled off a lovely diving save palming the ball around the post.

The half hour signalled the start of a three goal frenzy within the space of two minutes as Monmouth first took the lead through Sam Palmer whose wonderful strike from outside the box finished up in the top left hand corner of Keiron Blackburn’s goal.

The Bulldogs responded with an equaliser from Chris Jones following a goalkeeping blunder that saw the Ton striker snatch possession from keeper Williams.

Action returned to the Ton end of the pitch and Monmouth regained the lead when a failed clearance attempt landed at Allerdice’s feet inside the box. He drilled his shot low and hard to make it 2-1 after 32 minutes.

Monmouth took the lead into half time but it didn’t last long after the teams had returned to the pitch.

A cross from the right into the Monmouth box found ex-Ento Aberaman striker Richard Jago who connected with the ball via a superb header that he directed inside the far post on 53 minutes.

From here it looked like Ton were the most likely team to go on and win the match, but to their credit Monmouth failed to give in and got their reward in the 77th minute when from a freekick Allerdice headed the ball into the net to restore the visitors lead.

In the final minute of the match Ton’s Jamal Roberts headed the ball into the goal but what he thought was an equaliser was ruled out by the Referee who had judged that the player had pushed his marker in the back to gain an advantage.

Therefore, Monmouth left the Ynys Park with a superb pre-season win under their belts. The Kingfishers should use such a result as inspiration for their forthcoming Division Three campaign.

Llanrumney 0 – 4 ENTO Aberaman Athletic

Pre-season friendly

from ENTO Aberaman Athletic

New signing Jonathan Kift bagged two goals in a comprehensive win over a spirited Llanrumney team.

ENTO were pressing from the off and had several chances before Chris Summers opened the scoring.  Dean Morris was instrumental in the game dictating play from the middle of the park and laid on several good balls that created good goal scoring opportunities for ENTO.

Kift then ran on to a good ball and lobbed the advancing Llanrumney keeper to open his account for ENTO and gave them a 2-0 half time lead. With Mike Jones leading from the back and marshalling his defence well the unit remained tight throughout the first half with only one good chance offered to Llanrumney that was well saved by Collins.

Manager David Morgan did not make any changes straight away and ENTO started the second half as they finished the first, creating chance after chance and indeed it was Kift who got his second to kill off any hope of a Llanrumney fight back. In all fairness to Llanrumney they tried to play football all afternoon and are a credit to former Aberaman player Lee Bridgeman who is the Llanrumney manager.

Mattie Davies, Neil Davies ad Dale were introduced for the last 25 minutes and it was not long before a well worked corner found Mattie Davies on the end to strike his first for the club. Later on he also got on the end of the best move of the match and hit a great shot that struck the bar. Kift was denied his hat trick when he miss-hit a shot that had goal written all over it. Summers went close late on with a great strike that flew just past the post.

All in all a good workout for the lads and Manager David Morgan pleased with the attitude and spirit shown

ENTO travel to Caerau Ely on Tuesday evening for a 6.30 pm kick off for their second friendly of the pre-season

CWMBRAN TOWN RETAIN SPANISH CONNECTION

25 July 2008

by Terry Daley

NEW-LOOK Cwmbran Town this week launched the start of what the club hopes will be a successful era – although the Crows will still have a Spanish flavour about them.

Precious little has gone right for the Gwent outfit over the past three seasons since a couple of financial collapses saw them drop out of the top-level Principality Welsh Premier League.

The appointment of London-based Spaniard Guillermo Ganet for the 2007-08 season proved unconvincing as the Cwmbran Stadium side finished 14th of 18 in Division One of the MacWhirter Welsh League – avoiding a second successive relegation by only 11 points.

Now, however, the Crows have regrouped with officials convinced that a complete on and off-the-field overall promises a much brighter future for the inaugural 1992-93 PWPL champions, who competed in five European campaigns and three Welsh Cup finals while in their pomp.

With Ganet departed by mutual consent, the Crows named director of football Gary Proctor as the new man in their dug-out and the former club coach was instrumental in negotiating a two-year, four-figure kit deal with Spanish football-kit suppliers company Joma.

“Joma supply kit to a large number of teams in Spain, including Deportivo de La Coruña and Sevilla FC,” said Crows committee member Carolynn Purcell.

“In the UK, they supply Charlton Athletic and Cardiff City and now have their most illustrious team signed up – Cwmbran Town!

“But in all seriousness, we’re delighted the company is to supply us, including home and away outfits, training kit, tracksuits, bench coats and kit bags, etc

“The club has had a few years when it has had to tighten its belt financially. But a five-year plan has been put together by the new committee and the future of the club is looking the best it has been for a long time.”

“One of the goals of the club over the next few years is to raise its profile in the local community.”

Meanwhile Ready Pave Ltd, a UK-wide company specialising in driveways and paving, are the club’s new away shirt sponsors. Their named was picked out of a draw made up of firms who had paid just £75 to enter.

“We pleased to have Ready Pave on board and would like to thank all the companies who put their names forward for the draw,” concluded Ms Purcell.

* Cwmbran continue their pre-season preparations on Tuesday, July 29, when they visit the Stebonheath Park home of Principality Welsh Premier League title-holders and Champions League entrants Llanelli.

If interested please contact Stuart Luckwell on 07950 753629.

BARRY TOWN SEEK NEXT STEP

23 July 2008

Barry Town Chairman, Stuart Lovering, is offering the club for sale for just £250k if a genuine football person or group are interested.

The Club is currently on the market for £395k with international business agents Turner Butler who independently valued the Club at £500k to £750k. Barry Town are enjoying a revival after comfortably gaining promotion last year under one of Welsh football’s most promising Managers, Gavin Chesterfield.

Such has been the buzz around the Jenner Park Club that the Town have been attracting over 20 players for every training session with some of the top players in the Division attracted to the history, facilities, and management at the club.

However, Lovering says money is still tight and only a limited budget can be offered this season. “I have invested £60k in refurbishing the clubhouse to ensure the long term success and funding of the team – but this loan needs to be repaid and I have to draw an income as I work full-time at the Club. Without having to pay back the loan and my drawings, Barry Town is perfectly capable of being self-funding so anyone who bought the Club would not need to put any more money into it – and still have a decent budget for a successful team at Division One and Welsh Premier level.

Net annual turnover of the business based mainly around the Bar Clubhouse is 200k to 250k. About half that goes to the brewery – the rest is left over for wages, overheads and the team.”

“It is very frustrating for everyone that the self-funding cannot be unlocked at present. I stepped in to save the Club in December 2003 from bankruptcy and now Barry Town has no debt, a quality Clubhouse, a youth set-up and a constantly building relationship with the 60,000 population of Barry, as shown by the Open Day at Jenner Park last Saturday attended by hundreds of people. This is a very secure base on which to continue the Barry Town revival.”

The Manager and players are brilliant in their support for fundraising. Over 15 players were present at the Open Day and they are committed to being part of the Club not just the team – by supporting Club nights every few weeks like the Open Day, Golf Day (Friday August 8th at Wenvoe Golf Club £200 a team of four. Contact Club on 01446 735858 if you wish to enter a team), a Race Night, a Football Night and so on. We are also getting more sponsors coming forward every year.”

“If anyone out there has the finance to buy the Club I would urge them to pick up the phone and speak to the agents Turner Butler. The season will soon be on us and the Manager really needs to know he can sign the quality players now. Players are prepared to come to Barry Town for a half or a third of what other clubs are offering – just because it’s Barry Town and the Manager is so respected. It would be a tragedy if Barry Town were to slip back now, possibly never to recover.

Some businesses should even consider buying the club as an investment renaming the Club after their business name eg ‘ABC’ Barry Town to gain enormous publicity – the way Mike Harris did at TNS which helped him sell his business for £12 million a few years later!”

Barry Town have confirmed their pre-season friendly with a Swansea City XI at Jenner Park for Saturday August 9th at 2pm. Prices are £5 adult, £4 OAP, £3 Student/Benefits, £1 Children).

Seats have now been thrown open to the public for the day trip to Barnstaple on Saturday August 2nd. Anyone fancying a cheap day trip to Barnstaple, north Devon at just £15 each should contact the Club on 01446 735858.

Rob Toon of Turner Butler can be contacted on 07748 966665 or 01895 256000.

Stuart Lovering 07751 441561.

Caerau (Ely) 1 - 5 Ton Pentre

Pre-Season Friendly

from Ton Pentre FC

Ton Pentre travelled to MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two outfit Caerau Ely for their first pre-season friendly as the Rhondda Bulldogs began their preparations for the 2008-09 campaign with a fine win.

Ton were parading several new signings in their starting eleven with Christopher Jones (from Caerleon) and Jacob Daly (from Pontypridd Town) both putting in excellent displays in attack. The Rhondda Bulldogs also welcomed back former Club Captain Andrew Seburn who returns from a lengthy injury that has kept him sidelined for the past two seasons.

For this friendly Ryan Betteney kept watch between the goalposts as last season’s youth team keeper looks to replace the retired Marty Ellacott. Leon Jacka, another youth team product, was also included in Kevin Richards’ starting eleven and was impressive.

Ton Pentre took the lead in this match through an own goal after 12 minutes when Ryan Morgan’s long ball forward from defence was sent too long for Jones to chase. A Caerau Ely defender looked to direct the ball back to his keeper but instead headed it past their man in goal who had come off his line to collect.

The home team looked reasonably sharp having already played in a 5-0 pre-season match defeat against Welsh Premier champions Llanelli in their preparation for the UEFA Champions League, but were unable to find any joy in the final third of the pitch during the first half.

Ton grabbed a second goal in the 42nd minute through Jones who rounded off a lovely move that saw Jacka play the ball inside from the right to Seburn, who in turn set the former Caerleon player up for his strike.

Just over a minute later it was 3-0 when Phil Clarke’s clearance up field fell to Jones who jinked his way around the last man to round the goalkeeper and side foot into an empty net.

On 51 minutes Caerau Ely pulled a goal back from a nice angled strike on the edge of the box. Betteney did well to make contact with the effort but he was unable to stop it from top left destination.

Jacka was again involved in the build up to another goal when his magnificent through ball from halfway up the right wing unleashed Daly to cut inside and finish well past the helpless goalkeeper to make it 4-1 after 61 minutes.

Ton Pentre completed the afternoon’s goalscoring 15 minutes from time when Andrew Hughes won the ball in defence with a powerful header up field that was collected by ex-Taffs Well midfielder Lloyd Toghill. He struck low and hard from 20 yards to make it 5-1.

MORALE-BOOSTER FOR NEWPORT CIVIL SERVICE

Newport Civil Service 4, Croesyceiliog 2

Pre-season friendly

17 July 2008

by Ray Parker

MacWhirter Welsh League newcomers Newport Civil Service gained a morale-boosting success over Gwent rivals Croesyceiliog at their Shannon Close ground in Bettws this evening.

And Civil Service, who came from behind to achieve their success, can also be encouraged by Croesyceiliog’s success over a relatively short period.

Croesyceiliog have risen to the league’s top flight and are only in their fifth season of membership.

Croesyceiliog took a seventh-minute lead through Jody Jenkins after Civil Service goalkeeper Chris Jones had spectacularly turned Jamie Jenkins long-range shot onto the crossbar, Jody reacting very smartly to open the scoring.

But Civil Service’s reply was swift, scoring two rapid goals, the first after 13 minutes through Mark Millinchip and Croesyceiliog didn’t have time to recover before Nicky Cadman gave the Welsh Autoparts Gwent County League champions a 2-1 lead and it could so easily have been three, Cadman’s shot striking a post.

However, Civil Service went into the break with a two-goal lead, player-manager Ben Burrows, clipping a long-range shot over the advancing John Bailey.

Michael Dewar pulled a goal back early in the second-half but within a few minutes Luke Whitham ensured a Civil Service win.

Civil Service are at home to Newport YMCA on Saturday (kick-off 3.0pm), following a meeting between the clubs’ youth teams (kick-off 12.30pm). Civil Service’s season begins with a short trip to Gwent rivals Goytre in the Welsh Cup on August 16.

WAYNE MATHEWS SIGNS-UP TO ELY RANGERS' FUTURE PLANS

16 May 2008

by Bob Fry, Secretary, Ely Rangers FC

Ely Rangers are pleased to announce the extension of Wayne Mathews' management contract for a minimum period of five years.

Wayne took over last year from John Boulton who managed Ely's first team for over 10 years and has been at the club for over 25 years.

John brought a team of non paid family and loyal team players through from the Amateur league to the first division MacWhirter Welsh League. John's achievements were significant and efforts were relentless.

With most of the players John has managed finally reaching retirement it is important we bring in fresh blood on the management and playing side after John decided to step down, John has been a huge benefit to our club and will continue on the non-playing side to support where necessary.

It is an exciting time for Ely, we have a newly appointed committee of 12 members, we have two youth teams and a junior set-up ranging from under 6s to under 16s, over 200 players including a girls team, many successes are being achieved - the trophy cabinet is full.

Our goal is now to ensure we have a successful and sustained plan of attack for our two youth and three senior Teams which will guarantee the future for players within our junior teams.  Wayne Mathews is a significant signing for our club's first team, he will also oversee the running of the reserves, thirds and youth teams.

Wayne's career includes playing for the likes of Cardiff City, Swansea City, Cheltenham Town, Barry Town, Ton Pentre and Cwmbran Town; during which his managers and coaches included John Toshack, Mike England, Len Ashurst, Ritchie Morgan, Tony Wilcox and John Boulton.

Wayne' s experience will ensure the club's playing plans are achieved over the next five years and beyond.

The Ely Rangers committee are also currently drawing up a five year plan for non playing matters such as club house extension and sponsorship deals to seal the financial stability of the club for many years to come.

Events such as the Liverpool Legends Dinner and 200 Club membership have started the club off on the right footing, however, it is only the tip of the iceberg if Ely are to achieve their goals for the future.

Ely have recently joined the elite status of floodlight capability, we are also looking to have our bar renovated during the next month along with club house renovations during the summer.

With a five year plan in place both on and off the pitch, this is certainly an exciting time for the club.

PENTWYN PICK UP TROPHY BUT MANAGER LEE STEPHENS RESIGNS

15 May 2008

from Pentwyn Dynamos FC

On the last day of the season, Pentwyn Dynamo were due to receive the trophy for winning the Division Three title, but no one realised just how memorable the day would become.

Before the players barely had time to sit down in the changing rooms at Canolfan Cwmaman, Manager Lee Stephens and Assistant Phil Clay announced that the final league fixture against Cwmaman Institute would be their last in charge of Pentwyn Dynamos. The shell-shocked players gazed around the changing room expecting a punch line, which was never to appear.

During the season, the Dynamos changing room was vibrant and full of laughter. But news of their resignation hours before the trophy was to be lifted saw the atmosphere change as the players began to realise the lasting impact that this decision would have.

The Dynamos, guaranteed League victory regardless of the result on the last day of the season had to pick themselves up in a short space of time to ensure that they went out with a bang. Cwmaman Institute beat Pentwyn 7-1 in the return fixture and the fact that no team had done the double over Pentwyn this season meant that Institute were the only team that could stand in the way of this feat.

The game started with both sides trying to establish possession early on and a few chances could have seen either side take the lead. It was the Dynamos that were to capitalise first, with David Williams out-jumping a Cwmaman defender to head Pentwyn into a 1-0 lead.

Pentwyn then dominated the majority of the first half keeping possession and looked comfortable to go into the half with a 1-0 lead. However, Russell Wigley, arguably Pentwyn's best player this season had an extremely rare lapse of concentration gifting the ball to the Cwmaman striker who was able to slot the ball home despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Andrew Sheen and defenders Johnson and Winston.

The second half began badly for Pentwyn as Cwmaman had a few goal bound efforts in the first few minutes saved by Sheen, however Pentwyn restored their one goal advantage shortly after when captain Lee Grant coolly slotted the ball over the keeper into the inside netting, making it 2-1 to the Dynamos.

Cwmaman, who had to win in order to keep their promotion dreams alive, made a few effective substitutions and were able to draw level when a fiercely driven cross was met at the back post and hit across the keeper into the back of the net making it 2-2.

It seemed as though Lee Stephens' last game in charge was going to end in a draw, until a long ball caught the defenders off guard. Pentwyn went 3-2 up with no more than five minutes remaining when top scorer Barry Gunstone headed the ball past the keeper who had rushed out of his box and tapped the ball into an empty net, sparking scenes of jubilation amongst the players and staff.

As the final whistle blew, it was hard to fathom, which team were more unlucky; Cwmaman who knew their chances of promotion in their first season in the MacWhirter Welsh League were dashed; or Pentwyn, who knew they were about to lose Lee Stephens and Phil Clay, the epicentre of their title-winning team.

As the trophy was presented to Captain Lee Grant, his ensuing speech was a dedication to manager Lee Stephens for his commitment and desire during his reign at Pentwyn. "Lee Stephens took the position three years ago and nearly earned us promotion in his first year, only to come even closer in his second. The third (and final) year saw a few more introductions, including assistant Phil Clay". The partnership between the two was almost certainly the reason why the Dynamo's were promoted to the Second Division for the first time in their existence.

The players were left to fathom why such a decision was made, but more importantly, why the committee were unable to keep hold of such an influential duo. Terry Munkley, Dynamos left midfielder along with the rest of the Dynamos players have vowed to do everything possible to keep both of these figureheads for their first season in Division Two. This is an understandable reaction from the players, because even though they won the points and scored the goals, not one Pentwyn player would disagree that Lee and Phil have spearheaded the team into a championship-winning side.

We would also like to congratulate Newcastle Emlyn and Penrhiwceiber Rangers for finishing second and third respectively.

CUCKOOS WIN AT LLWYDCOED DEDICATED TO MARK KENDALL

Mark Kendall in action for Tottenham against Arsenal

The very sad and sudden death of Mark Kendall last Thursday sent shock waves through the football world of South Wales and indeed the Gwent Constabulary. Through this website I want to add my own personal condolences to Gaynor, Lee and Lori and to close friends Gerry & Lindsey Bray.

I also want to dedicate our excellent 3-0 win at promotion-chasing AFC Llwydcoed to the memory of Mark Kendall who counted Risca United as one of his clubs.

Not only did Mark make a name for himself as a Wales International as a goalkeeper at Under-21, Youth and Schoolboy levels he played professionally at Tottenham Hotspur, Newport County, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Swansea City and Burnley.  After he joined the Police Force in 1993 I managed to persuade him to sign for us at the end of his playing career.

So it was then, as a Police Officer in his late 30s "Kens" played for Risca United.  Not many games in truth, but certainly enough to make a lasting impression at our level. I can recall one home game when his Crystal Palace teenage son, Lee, came along to watch (and no doubt learn from Dad).  In that game, I remember one massive clearance from Mark that landed on the opposing six- yard line, it must have travelled about 85 yards without bouncing!

At that time "Kens" was not only a Police colleague but became a friend, he was always life and soul of the party, always first with a new joke being blessed with a wicked sense of humour;  The funniest tale he ever related to me was when he played in goal for Newport County and involved another friend and Police Colleague, Chris Dodd.   "Doddy" actually stopped a game against Swansea at Somerton Park and threatened to arrest "Kens" for using bad language.  As you can imagine Chris had never played football.

The minute’s silence at Llwydcoed on Saturday was for a man that I had a lot of respect for and the dedication of our win is Risca United`s tribute to him.

My thoughts are now with Gaynor and her family at this very diificult time.

Mark Kendall cannot be replaced.

DYNAMOS WIN TITLE

2 May 2008

from Pentwyn Dynamos FC

Cardiff-based Pentwyn Dynamos secured the MacWhirter Welsh League Division Three title after taking maximum points from the last 11 games. With other promotion contenders battling it out amongst themselves for the remaining two places, Pentwyn have managed to extend their lead in Division Three to 11 points.

After devastating back to back defeats against Merthyr Saints and Penrhiwceiber Rangers in January, manager Lee Stephens must have wondered whether it was going to be their year, after falling at the last hurdle in the 2006-07 season. However, Assistant Manager, Phil Clay was determined to ensure that these defeats would not break the mentality of the Dynamos. Even Clay's extreme enthusiasm coupled with the players’ attitude could have never foreseen the way, in which Pentwyn would respond to the recent defeats.

The following 'must win' game was away to struggling Abertillery. The Dynamos cruised to a 3-0 win but Tyrone Toppar, newly signed from Clevedon saw his season come to an abrupt end when an ill-fated challenge broke and dislocated his ankle. In the next game (away to Goytre), Pentwyn were 2-1 down in the second half but showed the character that would shape the rest of their season by winning 4-2. Captain Lee Grant, Pentwyn's most consistent player during their time in the Welsh League, was an inspirational figure in the centre of midfield, commanding the game at both ends of the pitch.

Form struck at the right time for Pentwyn as they began their run of wins. A 9-0 demolition of Ystradgynlais was followed by an extremely tight 1-0 Away win against Monmouth and a comfortable 5-1 home win against Llansawel.

On 5th April, Pentwyn travelled to second placed Newcastle Emlyn with only two points separating them at the top. With both sides favourites for promotion this year, the crunch match was described as 'the game that could decide the league'. Manager Lee Stephens refused to speculate and Pentwyn went on to win a closely fought match 1-0. This took their lead in the table to five points and Newcastle Emlyn went on to take just two points from their next three games.

Unfortunate errors saw Pentwyn concede three goals against Cwmamman United, but the Dynamo strike force continued their impressive run of form by scoring four goals, winning the game 4-3. Although delighted that Pentwyn had won seven games in a row, Assistant Manger wanted his young defence to tighten up at the back - so they did. With keeper Andrew Sheen, and central defenders Mark (Ziggy) Johnson & Daniel Winston commanding the defence, Pentwyn went on to win the next four games 1-0, 5-0, 3-0 and 2-0 against Porthcawl, Llansawel, Merthyr Saints and Seven Sisters respectively taking their impressive run of straight wins to 11 games.

The result against Llansawel saw Pentwyn guarantee Division Two football next year, but a win against Merthyr Saints would see the Dynamos secure the title. After a closely fought scoreless first half, Pentwyn upped their performance in the second half to win 3-0, keeping their third clean sheet in a row.

After celebrating the success of securing the league title, a (heavy) Saturday evening was followed by a Sunday fixture away to Seven Sisters. On form strikers, David Williams and Barry Gunstone were ruled out at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances meaning Pentwyn had to rely on the abilities of Reserve Goalkeeper Jamie Sheen, 27 and Kit man Mike Preece, 57 to play up front. Thankfully, goals game from midfielders Lee Grant and Ryan Cachia, to seal a 2-0 win and record their fourth clean sheet and 11th Straight win.

It goes without saying that this could not have been achieved without the qualities of Lee Stephens (Player/Manager) and Phil Clay (Assistant Manager), who have achieved so much success in such a short space of time together. The commitment shown and the camaraderie off the pitch has almost certainly been a major influence on the pitch and we look forward to playing in Division Two next year, whether it is with Newcastle Emlyn, Penrhiwceiber, Llwydcoed or Cwmaman Institute - we wish them the best of luck over the next three games.

CHAMPAGNE CORKS POPPING FOR BARRY TOWN

28 April 2008

from Stuart Lovering, Chairman, Barry Town FC

Barry Town are promoted to Division One of the MacWhirter Welsh League.

The Town are celebrating promotion after securing a 0-0 draw against Llanwern at Newport Stadium last Wednesday and are guaranteed first or second place with three going up.

The champagne corks will be popping after Tuesday’s last home match of the season, against Llangeinor. Manager Gavin Chesterfield has done incredibly well to put a promotion-winning team together immediately after taking over – the players having given their all for one of the most talented managers in Welsh football.

The match at Llanwern was an exciting 0-0, the only question being how the Town didn’t put a few goals past a team who were completely outplayed and down to 10 men when they lost a player to two yellow cards in the first half. The Town dominated the second half possession but just couldn’t get a goal. To be fair to Llanwern, they were missing a few of their first team squad to injury and suspension and put up a brave defence.

Gavin Chesterfield now wants promotion to the Premiers next season and has already started planning to get the Town back where it belongs – with three priorities.

Gavin has called on businesses to back the Town: “Barry Town have played this promotion-winning season without a sponsor on our shirt. How do Barry people feel about that? Small villages can get businesses to sponsor them – why not Barry? Surely, there are successful businesses in Barry that will sponsor the Town? I appeal for a big sponsor to come forward to back the Town and lots of businesses to do some smaller sponsorship and share in the civic pride in seeing Barry Town becoming a successful football club”.

Gavin has also called for more supporters to buy season tickets. “The Chairman is going to arrange all matches on a Friday night if possible next season and has reduced prices to amazing value for money. Adults are only being charged £50 – that’s for 17 League matches and up to 7 League Cup matches saving up to £70 compared to on the gate prices.”

“Tickets are also transferable so if you can’t make the match, you can give the ticket to a friend – why not buy a ticket to share between you? OAPs are only £40, Students £30 and U-16 £10. All children who play for a Barry Town youth team in the Vale League or our Academy get in for free as well!”

“In addition, the Chairman is trying to get other Premier and Division One teams to allow free entry to Barry Town season ticket holders on a mutual deal so season ticket holders at Llanelli, Port Talbot, Dinas Powys, etc., could get free entry to Barry Town matches as well in return. This way we would all sell even more season tickets as a £50 season ticket could allow you to see 100 matches a season offering incredible value for money!”

Gavin’s third priority is for more coaches and children to form Barry Town youth teams and further develop the Town’s Academy: “Barry Town’s Under 13 Academy team played Swansea City at Jenner Park on Monday night with both teams enjoying post match meal in the Club afterwards. Matthew Case, the Manager, was assisted by Mike Cosslett and Jeff Shaw with Swansea City’s Head of Academy meeting up early to discuss future matches at every age level between the two teams”.

“The Town’s Under 16 Academy team has also played Swansea City, Cardiff City and Yate Town. We need to test Barry’s best kids against the best teams with the best coaches – which of course can only happen at Barry Town. There is great talent at youth level and Barry Town wants every child to develop their full potential. Again, I call on a business to sponsor Barry Town’s youth development over the next few years.”

“These are exciting times to be part of Barry Town and I urge businesses, supporters, coaches and children to get involved and feel the pride that comes when your home town Club is successful!”

Anyone interested can contact the Club on 01446 735858 midday to 11pm every day or call in at the Club between these hours for forms.

LAST SURVIVING FOUNDER-MEMBER OF TAFFS WELL FC DIES

Mr John Morley passed away on 23 April 2008. John was at the original meeting in 1946 when Taffs Well FC was formed. He was a great player, captain and a man who led by example on the pitch. John was also a former Secretary of the Club before moving to live in Caldicot. He then played for Caldicot for many years serving them with distinction and we know he is very fondly remembered in the Caldicot area.

In his later years he moved back to the Taffs Well area and attended every home game when his health allowed. John was guest of honour at our clubs diamond anniversary last year.  He was a man of great dignity on and off the pitch and our deepest sympathies go to his family.

The funeral service will be held on Friday 2 May 2008 at 12.15 in the United Chapel in Taffs Well and afterwards at Taffs Well Cemetery at 1.00 pm.

CUCKOOS READY TO WELCOME SKY SPORTS AND OTHER RISCA UNITED NEWS

26 April 2008

from Stuart Luckwell (Chairman and Secretary) and Mark Bennett of Risca United FC

Sky Sports are intending to come to Ty-Isaf Park next Tuesday (29th April) as Risca United face Merthyr Saints in our last home game of the season.

Sky Sports are currently doing a programme about the state of the game.  Two weeks ago Mark Bennett sent an e-mail which was read out on Sky Sports News, the following day an e-mail was received stating that they were very interested in following up our story and true to their word, they certainly have, so a warm welcome will be awaiting them next week and hopefully in front of a large crowd, so spread the word.

Risca United are pleased to announce that they have been recommended by The Welsh Football League to receive grant aid from The Football Association of Wales for a ground development project. The recommendation will be rubber stamped by the FAW at the end of May and the club will have six months to commence work. The Grant Aid will only be released on completion of the project.

The £8,000 grant will unfortunately not cover the full cost of the project and means that The Cuckoos are now actively seeking other benefactors to come up with a further £7,000 to £8,000 to ensure that the club do not miss out on this opportunity to complete phase one of their ground development plans.

Ty-Isaf Park has been the home to Risca United since 1946 but in recent years has been the target of mindless vandalism. The Ground is owned by Caerphilly County Borough Council who are being approached to give 100% support to the club in its quest to develop the ground.

The Grant of £8,000 and a further similar amount are required by the club to purchase and erect a six foot high palisade fence around part of the senior pitch, spectator stand, dressing rooms and other facilities in order to prevent the constant anti-social behaviour within the Park that has been a constant blight during the last few years. Caerphilly County Borough Council, Risca United and local residents will all benefit from the project which aims to make this part of the town a Park to be proud of.

With the recent news that the southern part of Risca is to undergo a massive facelift through Residential and Business development under local developers The Bird Group, the club feel that this facelift to the South Eastern gateway to the County Borough should include a football ground worthy of sustaining Welsh League Football for many years to come.

When complete, the club would then continue in its ambition to secure a long-term Council Lease/Licence for Ty-Isaf Park thereby enabling further grant aid funding to assist in its quest to make further ground improvements.

Mark Bennett, who joined the club committee this season, has been rewarded for the amount of time and effort he has put into our Website.

Welsh Football Magazine (The Independent Voice of Welsh Soccer) have recognised our efforts by voting Risca United`s Website as the Runner-Up in this season’s Welsh Football Website Awards. In the May edition of the Magazine, Editor, David Collins writes...

"The sheer enthusiasm of the people at this Gwent club who update the site several times daily puts this one (The Website) up with the very best club sites in Wales, even though in design terms its bound to be eclipsed by the more professionally built sites. Risca United can be classed as a worthy Runner-Up and an example to all, of what can be achieved on the web with dedication. I’m pleased to hear that the Cuckoos are getting the visitor numbers that the site deserves."

As club Chairman I want to add my congratulations to Mark and everyone else who contributes for the hard work and commitment. Please keep it up. Now all we have to do is take on board the comments of David Collins and try to address the overall design of our site ready for next season.

Incidentally we were beaten into first place by CPD Porthmadog of the Welsh Premier League.

As an aside, I must sing the praises of the Welsh Football Magazine which is published nine times every year. It’s an excellent read for Welsh football fans and at only £2.50 a shout is great value if you want to keep abreast of all that happens in football in Wales. Perhaps next season we can help to increase its circulation by selling the publication at our home games.

Ystradgynlais 1, Seven Sisters 1

by Ray Parker

Seven Sisters kept their noses ahead of rivals Ystradgynlais in the battle for local bragging rights in the Third Division.

Both teams are clear of the bottom two sides facing the dreaded drop, on 26 points but Seven Sisters, suffering a three-point deduction earlier in the season, have two games in hand.

Seven Sisters should have taken early control of the game when they were awarded an eighth-minute penalty after the neat skills of Rhys Surringer pierced the home defence and he went down under challenge from Tom Jones.

Ystradgynlais protested loud and long against the decision - but it was the right call. However, Richard Herdman struck a feeble shot wide of a post.

The 21-year-old Surringer, displaying good close control, the ability to turn  defenders and find space. was quite a handful at times but not so influential in the second period when Ystradgynlais held the upper hand.

Seven minutes later Herdman was denied the opportunity of making amends when, in a hectic goalmouth scramble, the Ystradgynlais goalkeeper Jamie Rand, made a quite remarkable one-handed reflex save from close range.

After a goalless first-half in which the home side had a good spell leading up to the break they carried on in command and went ahead with a penalty -  given away by Steve Morrow - after 57 minutes, Ceri Slyman bang on target with his spot-kick.

Ystradgynlais were reduced to ten men when Tom Jones was dismissed for a second bookable offence and Seven Sisters took full advantage when Richard Herdman, who switched from a central defensive role into attack in an effort to snatch an equaliser, made it just in the nick of time with a header three minutes from the end.

Ystradgynlais: James Rand; Ioan King, Mark Bell, Tom Jones, Huw Littlewood, Adam Alexander, Mark James, Ceri Slyman, Craig Hopkins, Liam Lewis, Dave Miller. Substitutes: Huw Evans, Lee Thomas, Lance Davies, Mark Allan.

Seven Sisters: Damian Turner; Daniel Evans, James Griffiths, Steve Morrow, Huw Pascoe, Steve Soper, Nicky Moore, Rhys Surringer, Andy Morrow, Simon Isaac, Richard Herdman. Substitutes: Chris Herdman, Matthew Harris, Richard Bowden, Daniel Harris.

Ely Rangers 2, UWIC 1

by Ray Parker

Ely Rangers kept alive their flickering hopes of gaining a top three finish in the Second Division, enabling them to make a swift return to the top flight, with a home win over promotion rivals UWIC.

The margin of victory should have been greater for Ely who had the lion's share of the opening half, establishing a three-goal lead just after the interval but spirited UWIC hit back but the most they managed against a well-organised Ely defence was an own goal from Owain Mattey.

However, just before the goal UWIC striker Duncan Culley, unmarked just yards from goal, completely missed his opportunity and with seconds remaining Ely goalkeeper Ashley Hart made a stunning save from Alex McInch's sweetly-struck free-kick, arrowing its way into the top corner of the net.

UWIC were stung by two early Ely goals, scored by Anthony Nagi and Matthew Hibbs, then a goal early in the second half by leading scorer Sean Nash and a convincing home win looked on the cards, but at least Ely are piecing together a late good run which could ensure a nail-biting end to the season. They have won three of their last four league games but after two successive home games end the season with three on the road.

UWIC included three former Ely players in their starting line-up - McInch, Matt Trotman and Ben Perkins.

Bob Fry, Ely secretary, said quite bluntly, "We need to win our five remaining games to have any chance of going  up."

Ely, at one stage of the season, led the table and figured in the top three for even longer but then struck a rocky patch. However, they seem to have steadied themselves at a time when other teams in the promotion frame are not getting the best results.

Ely are now on 47 points, three behind fourth-placed UWIC with a game in hand. Cardiff Corries, beaten at home by leaders Bettws on Wednesday evening, are on 52 points.

Ely Rangers: Ashley Hart; Gareth West, Jason Clarke, Owain Mattey, David Penikett, Danny James, Paul Penikett, Matthew Hibbs, Sean Nash, Anthony Nagi, David Pugh. Substitues: Wayne Matthews, Graham Cummings, Kevin Haslam.

UWIC: Mike Lewis; Kieron Stone, Mike Antrobus, Harrison Kingston, Matt Sutton, Ben Perkins, Stephen Provis, Alex McInch, Duncan Culley, Matt Trotman, Ian MacHattie. Substitutes: Chris Rogers, Jeff Bell, Matt Branson.

Referee: Ian Williams (Pontypool).

Seven Sisters 1, Cwmaman Institute 1

by Ray Parker

Cwmaman Institute kept their Third Division promotion hopes burning with a draw at struggling Seven Sisters, determined to finish above local rivals Ystradgynlais who suffered a 6-1 home thumping from league newcomers Monmouth Town.  The point gained taking Seven Sisters above Ystradgynlais on goal difference, with the two sides playing each other at Ystrad on Sunday (2.30 pm)

After a goalless first-half Cwmaman, disappointed they did not take the three points, went ahead through Mike Oliver who pounced from close range after Lewis Jones' shot had been blocked by goalkeeper Damian Turner 15 minutes from time.

Seven Sisters continued to show plenty of spirit and in the closing stages of a game which produced plenty of goal chances - most of them spurned by both sides - the Herdman family took the spotlight to earn a precious point, taking them further away from the bottom two teams, Morriston Town and Abertillery Excelsiors, only two sides facing the drop this season, and possibly only one.

Substitute Richard Herdman, replacing Owain Llewellyn with seven minutes remaining, made a dramatic entry. He scored an equalising goal two minutes from the end, the chance set up by Barry Herdman's corner and he had earned the flag-kick, striking the shot which brought a fine save from Jonathan Trulove.

Earlier in the half Ross Williams and Lewis Jones had been foiled by excellent defending from Daniel Evans but the visitors certainly did not have it all their own way as James Griffiths was just wide of the mark not long before the deadlock was broken.

Cwmaman scorer Oliver was close to a goal in the 35th minute with a shot from just outside the penalty area and Seven Sisters Barry Herdman was even closer four minutes from the interval.

Seven Sisters: Damian Turner; Daniel Evans, Jonathan Douglas, Steve Morrow, Huw Pascoe, Steve Soper, James Griffiths, Owain Llewellyn, Andy Morrow, Barry Herdman, Richard Bowden.  Substitutes: Nicky Moore, Philip Thomas, Kerry Phillips, Richard Herdman.

Cwmaman Institute: Jonathan Trulove, Lee Williams, Matthew Saunders, Matthew Cable, Tim Owen, Lewis Jones, Shaun Chappell, Mike Oliver, Daniel Johnson, David Airey, Ross Williams.  Substitutes: Kevin Boggis, Craig Lewis, Damien Jones, Leighton Price.

Referee: Mark Hulbert (Merthyr Tydfil).

PROMOTION AND CHAMPAGNE ON ORDER

14 April 2008

by Stuart Lovering, Chairman, Barry Town FC

Barry Town hope to win promotion and pop the champagne corks in front of a bumper crowd this Tuesday at Jenner Park when they host Cardiff Grange Quins in a local derby, kick-off 7.30pm – a win for the Town with UWIC losing on the same night would all but confirm Barry Town’s promotion due to the Town’s 14 goals better difference.

With fourth placed UWIC 12 points behind Barry Town, promotion has looked odds on since the Town beat UWIC 1-0 a few weeks ago at Jenner Park. This is a great achievement for the player/Manager Gavin Chesterfield who took over in the summer and has so quickly assembled a promotion winning team – and the Town are still battling it out with Bettws for the title as well!

As an incentive, this Tuesday night’s match and Barry Town’s last home match of the season on 29 April against Llangeinor are free to anyone who purchases a season ticket for next year. Season tickets can be bought at the Club which is open from midday to 11pm every day of the week.

The Town are ambitiously aiming for 1,000 season tickets and are offering specially reduced prices to try and achieve their target. The Chairman has announced that for 17 League matches and up to seven League Cup matches, the prices are Adults £50, OAPs £40, Students £30 and Under-16s £10.

With the prospect of another successful year and promotion to the Welsh Premier, Barry Town are once again capturing the public’s imagination and attendances are expected to be the highest for five years.

Manager, Gavin Chesterfield, is also appealing for businesses to come forward and sponsor the Club. “It’s a shame that Barry Town remain without a sponsor - though village teams we play have sponsors names on their shirts. The Chairman says that if a business comes forward in the next few days to sponsor the first team, he can immediately put their names on the shirts as a bonus so that they can benefit from this season’s promotion as well as next year’s campaign”.

“I understand that the Club going into administration five years ago and the slip from the pinnacle of Welsh football hit Barry hard but the Club is now being run properly and once again achieving success”.

“I would urge businesses big and small to put in some sponsorship as nothing reflects a town’s pride more than its football team. The Chairman has put some excellent sponsorship packages together that range from £300 to £1,000. If 30 or 40 businesses put in some sponsorship like that, in addition to a main sponsor of the first team and youth Academy, I am confident that Barry Town will very soon be playing in Europe again with a youth development programme that will produce Town players of the future”.

“Every week, I have top quality players from other clubs calling me asking to join Barry Town because of all the good news coming out of the Club - as well, of course as the history, prestige and facilities that the Town can offer. Barry Town are once again on the brink of substantial success and I strongly appeal for the public to buy the great value season tickets and for businesses to get involved in Barry Town”.

BARRY TOWN PLAN FOR WELSH PREMIER

7 April 2008

by Stuart Lovering, Chairman, Barry Town FC

Top of the table Barry Town are preparing to return to the Welsh Premier after a major reorganisation of Welsh football looks set to get the green light in the next couple of weeks.

New UEFA regulations come into force in the season after next (2009-10) requiring all Premier clubs to meet certain criteria regarding stadiums, seating, media provision, youth development and other facilities.

At present, only six clubs in Wales’ top flight league are reported to meet these new standards. However, Barry Town’s stadium, facilities and expanding youth development put the club among the best in Welsh football.

Stuart Lovering, Chairman of Barry Town, has confirmed that, if possible, he would apply for the Town to immediately join the new Welsh Premier, which is looking to split into two divisions of 10 teams. Barry Town are currently top of Division Two, on the brink of promotion to Division One. The Club has also massively expanded its youth development and invested heavily in its hospitality facilities.

Lovering said, “The Premier needs to set higher standards to attract the respect of the public. The UEFA regulations are a great opportunity for the Premier to finally insist on the best for Wales’ top flight League.

“It also needs to focus on those clubs in the biggest populations capable of supporting big crowds. The Premier should ensure that Cardiff, Swansea and Newport all have Premier teams based at attractive stadiums. A Cardiff Utd team based at Leckwith, a Newport City or Utd based at Spytty Park and a Swansea Utd team playing in a quality stadium are crucial to the Premier’s future – even it means promoting them from lower divisions, renaming or merging teams or starting new teams under the management of the area’s football development officer.

Echoing former TNS Manager Ken Mackenna’s recent comments, Lovering added that “all pitches must meet strict quality criteria as to the playing surface – you can’t play decent football on park pitches. You need a smooth surface to allow for a fast quality passing game. All Premier teams should sooner or later play on FIFA 2 third generation technology pitches which could also be used for the first team and Academy teams to train on – quality training facilities are in short supply all over Wales”.

“It is also fundamentally crucial to the Premier that the FAW back these elite clubs with money. Each of the six to 10 clubs that meet UEFA standards should receive a minimum of £20-£30,000 each year depending on where they finish. This would cover all stadiums hire, transport, training, equipment and reasonable player expenses. These clubs would also have to be safeguarded from relegation except to any other club that meets these higher standards – and only if all 10 Premier clubs meet the higher criteria.

“The BBC and other media would be far more interested in a Premier where Welsh football is played on excellent pitches, in modern stadiums in front of big crowds between clubs that represent the largest populations in Wales. The Premier must recognise and accept that it is television, above all, that can bring in the money to sustain and improve the Premier.

“The Premier must talk to TV representatives and provide them with a product that they can sell to viewers. Matches must be events, occasions such as Barry Town v Cardiff Utd or Swansea Utd v Newport City in front of big crowds on quality pitches in modern stadiums with European Cup entry the big prize for the top three or four clubs in the Premier - a product that would attract TV and the public’s interest.

“They must also talk to Councils. Any decent Council would want a team from its area to be in the new Premier, on television and possibly competing in European football because of the publicity, status and marketing potential. I have already talked to Cardiff Council leaders who are very interested in the reorganisation and would certainly want Cardiff in from the beginning! Councils may also provide capital funding to add to the FAW’s funding to ensure they have a team in the Premier.

“An up-tempo TV marketing campaign should accompany the re-launch to ensure maximum success, promoting the Premier and its clubs with one contact number and website for anyone interested in fixtures, season tickets and other information. Such a reorganisation with investment, marketing and TV support is also likely to appeal to national companies looking for serious sponsorship and marketing opportunities.

“In the longer term, even the municipal stadiums like Jenner Park and Spytty Park may not meet higher standards because of the running tracks that take away some of the atmosphere. In the USA, they are knocking down multi-purpose stadiums as failures for involving too many compromises. Ideally, all Premier teams should play in football purpose stadiums on FIFA 2 third generation technology pitches.

“They should also represent big populations capable of supporting big crowds. This may be regional in some cases. For example, the small mid-Wales teams like Newtown, Caersws and Welshpool could consider merging to form ‘The Powys Panthers’ as the region’s team in the Premier and play at an improved Newtown stadium on a FIFA 2 pitch.

“I would hope that Barry Town would be invited to join the top Premier from the beginning, wherever we finish in Division One next season (provided we are promoted this year!). Other clubs just spend money on their teams but I have invested over £60,000 on improving the club for the medium to long term benefit.

“I would like to think that the reorganisation of the Premier will be bold and brave and that the difficult decisions are also taken to ensure the best for the Premier in the medium to long term. The reorganisation must not be fudged and I hope that the smaller clubs understand and accept that the time is right for change in the best interests of Welsh football. The FAW, Councils, Trust bodies and Clubs in turn should plan for a roll out of financial investment in quality stadiums and FIFA 2 pitches.

“Representatives of the top clubs and possible new top clubs must meet soon with the FAW to start planning the reorganisation, marketing and TV interests so that we have a clear vision of what we want to achieve and how we are going to go about it step by step.”

Afan Lido 1, Newport YMCA 0

by Ray Parker

Afan Lido moved into third spot of the MacWhirter Welsh League, Division One, with a slender home success over Welsh Cup heroes Newport YMCA.

The Lido, extended their unbeaten league run to eight games, moving into third position, a point behind Goytre United and six adrift of leaders Ton Pentre.

And in the eight-match run the Lido have conceded three goals, suggesting they could upset the top two and realise their ambition of making a return to the Welsh Premier League.

It was not a particularly memorable match, not that the Lido will lose too much sleep. They picked up the points while the YMCA, who have reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup, were on the back foot in the second half following an even opening period.

The lone goal was a scrappy affair with YMCA goalkeeper Gareth Wesson saving from Steve Cox who earned a second chance and this time Mark Drew failed with his attempted goalline clearance.

The game was the first in a four-match home sequence for the Lido who face a tough April which contains six successive away games, starting with the YMCA return clash.

It was a soft goal for the YMCA to concede and a disappointing performance following their heroic display against Welshpool in the quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup last Saturday, recovering from a two-goal deficit to gain a 3-2 victory.

Afan Lido's young side could have won by a larger margin. Ian Jones beat the offside trap towards the end of a sometimes tempestuous first-half but Wesson made a splendid save and early in the second-half Wesson again had the upper hand in a repeat situation.

YMCA rarely threatened to get a share of the spoils, central defender Daniel Heath raising hopes of a late goal when he drilled a low free-kick just wide of the mark.

Afan Lido: Cosker; Justin Williams, Parry, Dan Williams, Morgan, Howells, Davies, Lewis, Jones, Cox, Waters. Substitutes: Best, Corey Thomas, Damon Thomas, Roberts, McCreesh.

Newport YMCA: Wesson; Drew, Ford, Martin, Heath, Lynch, Aaron Stewart, Alex Stewart, Palmer, Pardue, O'Brien. Substitutes: Yafai, Edwards, Jenkins, Mahmood.

Referee: Mark Evans, Llanelli.

AFC Llwydcoed are now looking to the future and this brilliant facility.

THE LATE GILBERT LLOYD

It is with deep regret that I have to report the sudden and sad passing of Llanelli AFC's legend Gilbert Lloyd.  Unfortunately, Gilbert's wife passed away recently too.

Gilbert was an outstanding player in the Welsh League during the 1960s and 1970s and holds the record number of caps for a Welsh Amateur International.

Gilbert went on to manage the Llanelli team and later the Social Club.

In recent times Gilbert has been an avid follower of the Reds and in particular his son, Reds defender Gary.

Deepest condolences are extended to Gary and family, also Llanelli AFC, at this sad time.  He will be sorely missed.

WEDNESDAY MATCH PREVIEW

13 February 2008

by Terry Daley

LLANWERN continue their bid to re-enter the MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two promotion race tonight minus leading goal-scorer Steve Perszewski.

The former Christchurch FC marksman’s league and cup tally currently stands at 22 and he’s will on his way to beating his 28-goal total of last season, when he lifted the club’s players-player-of-the-year award.

However a one-match suspension for picking up five bookings rules him out tonight when a Llanwern victory over visiting UWIC (kick off 7.00pm) will greatly increase their chances of a second successive promotion.

UWIC currently lie in third position, the lowest promotion spot, with seventh-placed Llanwern eight points adrift – but with two matches in hand.

Llanwern boss Laurence Owen is also unable to call on defender-midfielder Steve Stinton, who must serve the last of a three-game ban.

However returning to the squad are midfielder Tom Hopper and defender Gareth Wysome, who both missed Saturday’s home 4-0 win over Garden Village because of a leg injury and work commitments respectively.

Llanwern will be seeking to avenge an earlier-in-the-season defeat by the Students. They won 4-2 at home against a Llanwern side which scored via Perszewski (2), but also had two players sent off.

NEWPORT YMCA'S FIVE-YEAR PLAN

11 February 2008

by Terry Daley

WELSH Cup giant-killers Newport YMCA are poised to introduce a five-year improvement plan which the club hope will eventually lead to a place at the top table of domestic football.

The Mendalgief Road outfit is currently the highest-placed Gwent club in the MacWhirter Welsh League and is basking in the glory of reaching the quarter finals of the Welsh Cup for the first time in its 35-year-old history.

Included in the plan is an academy under former striker Simon Pratt, a UEFA-qualified coach, which will have a link up with Coca-Cola League One side Swansea City.

“We’re in the process of putting together a five-year plan and the idea behind it is that eventually want to play Welsh Premier League football,” said YMCA chairman Viv Edwards.

“That’s not to say we’ve targeted the WPL in five years. When we have evaluated the cost of the five-year plan, we’ll see really how long it’s going to take.

“So initially we’ll put in a five-year plan to say, ‘right how far will we be away from WPL football.’

“The start of this process is to actually form an academy under the directorship of Simon Pratt and other coaches of this club.

“The academy will be an integral part of the Swansea City Development Centre process, focussing on players aged five to 16 and it’s pleasing that we’ve the opportunity of working with one of Wales’ leading professional clubs.

“Looking around Mendalgief Road, it’s obvious that we have a long way to go in terms of upgrading our ground and we realise the cost of that to WPL level will be massive.

“And of course, by the time we achieve that standard, it’ll be longer than our five-year plan.”

“I suppose for a 250-seat stand (minimum WPL requirement), floodlights and terracing I could put a ball-park figure of around £250,000.”

YMCA will host Welshpool Town on St David's Day, March 1, in the last eight of the Welsh Cup having already beaten two other WPL clubs – holder Carmarthen Town and Llangefni Town.

by Terry Daley

CWMBRAN Town have revealed they beat the transfer window deadline to land the signatures of another nine players – taking the club’s number of new signings to an amazing 19 in just 15 days.

The latest recruits are:

* Frenchman Donny Clarck, a 20-year-old whose previous club was Parie FC.

* William Bassey, a Nigerian, 21, who has played for MacWhirter Welsh League Division One rivals Pontypridd.

On January 16, the Crows announced they’d signed Ohmar Pike, a 17-year-old from Jamaica previously with London outfit Cuitural, Uwa Ogbodu, a 29-year-old from Nigeria from Conference South side Basingstoke Town, England-born Oliver Collins, aged 25, from  Ryman League Division One outfit Molesey, Frenchman Tidiany Kone, a 25-year-old from French League club Lilas FC and Michael Makasi, a 21-year-old English-born player who’d appeared in the MWL with student side UWIC.

Of the nine newcomers, only Zoil, as a substitute in lthe 3-2 home defeat by leaders Goytre United, has made his club debut while of the other 10, only Makasi and Guei have yet to appear for the Crows.

They are next in action on Saturday when they entertain ENTO Aberaman Athletic at Cwmbran Stadium, kick off.2.00pm.

LLANELLI HIT EIGHT

Their next game is on Monday 18th February when they entertain Port Talbot Town at Stebonheath Park. Kick Off 7.30pm.

CLUB'S SPONSORSHIP DEAL IN JEOPARDY

One of the most lucrative and long running sponsorship deals in Welsh sport is being jeopardised by a Local Authority’s intransigence over a community facility in Aberdare.

ENTO main sponsors of ENTO Aberaman Athletic Football Club are considering their current agreement with the club over Rhondda Cynon Taff’s refusal to even open any sort of dialogue that would enable the club to play their home fixtures in the Welsh Premier League at the Michael Sobell Sports Centre Stadium in Aberdare.

The current sponsorship deal worth in excess of £150k over three years has enabled the club to challenge for promotion to the Welsh Premier League but will see their ambitions thwarted by strict ground criteria that rules out their current home at Aberaman Park.

ENTO has supported the club for over four years and provided the opportunity for the club to challenge for promotion into the Welsh Premier League and to be the sole representative for South East Wales’ commented Chairman Richard Rowlands

Rowlands added ‘The loss of our main sponsor would mean a complete rethink on the future plans for the club and seriously impact on our ambitions to bring top flight football to the Cynon Valley. This does not only affect the current group of players but all those with ambitions from Under 7’s upwards playing with our feeder club ENTO Aberdare Grasshoppers plus our Youth and Under 16 teams!!’

Tony Green, Managing Director of ENTO stated ‘We have been delighted to support the club for the last four years and have seen significant progress both on and off the field and now for a democratically elected Local Authority to simply dismiss our request for dialogue is unacceptable and leaves the Board of ENTO to seriously question our continued investment in Welsh sport’

Mr Green continued ‘South East Wales has no representative in the top flight of Welsh football, the Cynon Valley would welcome the opportunity to support a club challenging for European football but the Local Authority with a Stadium that was paid for by the community are not even prepared to open a dialogue, leaving my Board with little option to consider our position’

The likely impact of such a dramatic course of action from ENTO would be that the ambitions of some 150 young people of the Cynon Valley and the football supporters of the area would be deprived the chance of top flight football on their doorstep.

Any such move by ENTO would be catastrophic for this club but I fully understand the frustrations of the Board of ENTO, it is not as if we are asking RCT to contribute any financial aid, in fact quite the contrary, we have offered to bring the stadium up to Welsh Premier League standard at no cost to the Authortity and to make those additional facilities available to all users at no cost to them’ added Mr Rowlands.

Llanwern 1, Ely Rangers 1

by Ray Parker

Ely Rangers missed the opportunity of moving top of Division Two while indiscipline denied Llanwern the chance of victory and avenging a slender defeat suffered in early season.

Ely are seeking a swift return to the top flight following relegation while Llanwern have certainly not given up on a second successive promotion. With games in hand they can still prove a threat, making the tussle for promotion quite intriguing.

But both sides will have to improve if they are to be regarded as serious contenders, scoring chances at a premium and at times the two teams looked apprehensive, particularly in the first-half.

Llanwern were reduced to ten men in the 27th minute of the second-half when Steve Stinton got his marching orders after tangling with Matthew Hibbs.

Steve Perszewski, Llanwern's leading marksmen, maintained his excellent run of form with his eighth goal in the last five games, confidently converting a penalty after he had been needlessly brought down by Ely skipper Graham Cummings close on half-time.

Up to that moment it was Llanwern defender Matthew Currie who created anxiety in the Ely defence. In the 34th minute he made a excellent left-flank run, deep into the Ely penalty area where the combined challenge of Wayne Matthews and Gareth West kept out the danger, at the expense of a corner. Four minutes later Currie went even closer to a goal, this time Lee Denner getting the ball to safety.

And it was Denner early in the second-half who sparked Ely into life, striking a low free-kick which Chris Hart couldn't hold and then Danny James chipped a shot on to the crossbar after Hart had kept out Nash's shot. Ely finally began to show signs of getting back into the game but it was left to Cummings, turning saint from sinner, to rescue his side five minutes from time, scoring direct from a corner, helped by a swirling wind.

Laurence Owen, Llanwern manager, said: "It was a cagey game. I felt we showed a lot of fight while they knocked the ball around well, but I think we fully deserved our half-time lead. We knew it would be a tight game with perhaps just a goal in it. The turning point was undoubtedly the sending off. It was disappointing that we went down to ten men but I was not disappointed with the result."

Llanwern; C Hart; Power, Currie (Wysome), Spiteri, Baugh, Redman (Tanner), Hooper, R Shier, Perszewski, Stinton, Vaux. Substitutes (not used): Smith, Sully, Corey.

Ely Rangers: A Hart; West, Hibbs (Nagi), Matthews, D Penikett (Muscat), Denner, James, P Penikett (Haslam), Nash, Cummings, Dixon.

Referee: Mark Dyson (Abertillery).

Afan Lido 1, ENTO Aberaman 4

by Ray Parker

Chris Summers, one of the most prolific marksmen in Welsh non-League football, scored a second-half hat-trick for First Division title-chasing ENTO Aberaman at Afan Lido last night, keeping them right on course while for the home side defeat was a major setback.

But Afan Lido have only themselves to blame. They ran the show in the first-half but only had one goal to show for their splendid approach work, Daniel McGrath, signed last week from Briton Ferry, scoring on his debut.

Defender McGrath netted after 13 minutes. Michael Waters struck a low left cross following a scorching run, Andrew Pearson wrong-footed Aberaman's defence leaving McGrath to finish off the move. It was the perfect opening for Afan Lido and it seemed just a matter of time before they pulled out of sight creating a string of chances, but they all went begging. And ultimately they paid the highest price.

Four minutes after the opening goal Waters, a major threat, carved out another opening, Ian Jones just failing to connect. Midfield player Kieran Howells was wide of the mark after 26 minutes and two minutes later Pearson couldn't make a connection from yet another sparkling move with Waters the chief architect.

And that was the story of the first-half and Afan Lido were really made to suffer for not putting away their chances. They could so easily have been out of sight by the break.

Aberaman, climbing to fourth place, made a dream start to the second-half, Ryan Barry equalising and then Summers, celebrating his 36th birthday earlier this month, took centre stage with a hat-trick, taking his goal tally in league and cup games to 25 this season, moving from Pontypridd in the close season.

Fireman Summers certainly extinguished Afan Lido's fire, leading Afan Lido's defence a merry dance, his header to complete a hat-trick was a picture-book goal and the home side just couldn't contain him.
Summers said: "It is always nice to score goals, but hat-tricks are particularly nice. I am enjoying playing at Aberaman. It is another good club, just like Pontypridd.

"We were poor in the first-half. We gave a real Jekyll and Hyde performance. It was unbelievable how we turned it round."

David Morgan, Aberaman manager, said: "In the first-half we tried to force the pace and made too many errors."

But once Summers got to work the result was inevitable and Morgan added: "He is a quality striker. He has still got it! He scored with the first chance he had. We are nicely placed in the table - right in the mix."

Afan Lido: Cosker; McGrath, Parry, Williams, Cox, Martin, Davies, Howells, Jones, Pearson, Watersa. Substitutes: Best, Damon Thomas, Edwards, Corey Thomas, McCreesh.

ENTO Aberaman: Collins; Jago, Powell, Barry, Hewings, G Jones, Summers, Jenkins, Dawes, Nogan, Davies. Substitutes: Grant Thomas, Morris, Taylor, Morgan, Evans.

Referee: Teifion Cook (Clydach, Swansea).

GOODWILL TO ALL?

31 December 2007

After working hard to make improvements to their Ynysangharad Park ground, Pontypridd Football Club were delighted with their new seated stand and tarmac surround encircling the playing area.

Unfortunately, the curse of the mindless vandal struck almost immediately with a number of seats being broken before a game had even been played. The situation has since gone from bad to worse with a whole area of seating now burnt out and months of work ruined in minutes.

Club spokesman Clive Harry said "We are really at a loss to understand why local people would vandalise a facility which has been put in place for their benefit. We have had problems previously with broken glass on the pitch and it appears that the park has become a focal point for unruly behaviour which is ignored. Other clubs have suffered similar problems and it really does pose the question as to whether it is worthwhile trying to carry out ground improvements in future unless seated areas can be protected by lockable shutters".

BARRY TOWN NEWS

Barry Town play their first match for five weeks this Saturday at Jenner Park, kick-off 2.00pm against struggling Treharris who are second from bottom.

The first team will be hoping to emulate their reserves who won 7-0 against St Athan in the Vale Premiership on Saturday. Grant Thompson scored the first five goals for Barry Town, though the striker has rarely made an appearance from the bench for the first team, showing the gulf in standards between the Welsh League and the Vale Prem.

The Town’s first team match at Llangeinor was called off last Saturday due to glass on the pitch, thus giving Grant and Jeff MacLean a chance to get some match practice in the reserves.

Pictured (left to right): Barry Town's Jeff MacLean and Grant Thompson

The team and management enjoyed their Christmas night out last Saturday with curry and chips at the football club’s new restaurant, with a free tab put on by the Chairman. After some drinks, the team went into Cardiff and toured some clubs – a new experience for a few of the 18-year olds who were reluctant to be led into the ‘Boudoir’ at a big Cardiff nightclub! It was Christian Mills first time out with the squad since the local boy moved to the Town from Cadoxton Cons while Tom Hejduk, the Pole, put in some fine dance moves to entertain his team mates!

Gareth Picknell and Jeff MacLean are fit for this Saturdays match while Scott Morris has recovered from his broken leg in the pre-season friendly against Merthyr Tydfil and is available for selection. Long term injury, star striker, Zak Misbah has had his cast removed after a second knee operation and is expected to resume training in the New Year. His brother, Samir, is set to start training sooner after recovering from a broken foot when he dropped a glass on it. Leon Dennis, who hit the front pages after waiting nearly two hours for an ambulance on the pitch at Jenner Park has had his first cast removed following his successful operation and will be at the match to cheer on his team mates..

Barry Town are looking for a new Manager of the Town’s reserve team in the Vale Premiership as the current Manager, Dean Hyde, has started a new job and has work commitments on Saturdays. Anyone with suitable coaching or management experience who is interested should write to the Club at Jenner Park. The Town are also looking for extra quality players to join the Club’s reserve team and hopefully challenge for a first team place.

Barry Town’s Super Lotto was not won last week so this week carries an estimated prize of £250. Last weeks numbers were 4, 5, 6 and 8. Tickets, £1 each are available from the Club at Jenner Park which is now open from midday to 11.30pm every day.

FORMER CHAIRMAN AND MANAGER DIES/FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

I've been advised by David Griffiths that former Maesteg Park Chairman and Manager Brian Carpenter sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning, aged 64.

Brian had two spells as Manager of the Park and was the Club's Chairman when they played in the League of Wales.

Brian also managed Port Talbot and will be remembered for "finding" former Welsh International and current Llanelli Manager, Peter Nicholas.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brian's family at this sad time.

David has also advised that the funeral will take place at Margam Crematorium on Thursday 20 December 2007 at 2.30 pm.

YOBS HIT THE MURCH ONCE AGAIN

12 December 2007

from Morley Williams, Dinas Powys FC

Last Wednesday these dugouts were repaired following previous vandalism ready for the roof to go on, but on Friday evening all the blocks were knocked off. This follows many other attacks including sheet metal roofs being removed from dugouts, graffiti sprayed on stand, fires lit, pitch barriers bent and pulled out, glass and screws scattered on the pitch, and more.

All are reported to the police but they are unable to do anything about it. The Club has suggested replacing them with portable dugouts but the Vale of Glamorgan have refused permission to site a container at the Murch to store them. Despite CCTV cameras being sited 50mtrs away these yobs seem able to do what they like.

BARRY TOWN LAUNCH BOARD EXPANSION PLANS

Barry Town’s Chairman, Stuart Lovering, has launched a major initiative to get several local businessmen onto the Club’s board. The plans are the latest in a series of developments at Jenner Park aimed at building a financially sustainable foundation for Barry Town to return to the top of Welsh football and back into Europe.

“I haven’t squandered money on the playing budget so the Club has no debt and is now set to make about £50,000 profit in 2008. I have invested over £50,000 in refurbishing the Club’s bar and lounge/restaurant which has won Barry Town second place in UK Club of the Year 2007 in the category ‘Internal Refurbishment’. We are currently offering Sunday dinners, Xmas dinners and buffet catering. We are now open from midday and will shortly be introducing lunches, evening dinners and takeaways – and we will soon be widely promoting these initiatives.”

“On the football side, I have made massive efforts to expand our youth set up with several new kids’ teams. Next year should see an even greater expansion of children’s teams, including girls and hopefully a disabled team I am waiting to hear from.”

Businesses are being invited to join the Board with the incentive of helping Barry Town climb back to the top of Welsh football, benefiting from dividends and an increase in the value of their shares.

“I am looking for a few business people to join the Board by each purchasing 10% of the shares for £40,000. I am forecasting the Club to make a profit of about £50,000 in 2008. If £20,000 is set aside for the team, £10,000 in tax, the remaining £20,000 can then be distributed in dividends to the shareholders - that’s £2,000 back for every 10% of shares. I expect the profitability of the Club to rise with increased trade and greater income from sponsorship and success on the field. Consequently the dividends should also rise as well as the value of the shares”.

“The Club will fund itself from profits, sponsorship, increased attendances and some prize money. Turnover is currently about £200,000 pa but I am aiming to double that over the coming couple of years. As long as the Club spends within its budget and allocates money for shareholders’ dividends, Barry Town can enjoy a sustainable self-funding success on the pitch as well as on the balance sheet”

“Individuals are also welcome to invest in the company. House prices have trebled in the last few years so most people are sitting on a goldmine. If an individual wants to take out between £10,000 and £40,000 in equity from their house, the dividends could go to cover the small increase in their mortgage and they would probably make a profit in the medium to long term.”

“Having more local business people on the Board would give Barry Town even greater momentum to push the Club forward and generate greater excitement in the Town.” The Club is also available for sale at £350,000, though Lovering believes that a few successful businessmen putting in a relatively small investment and joining the Board may be better for the Club in the long term.

Taffs Well 1, Afan Lido 1

by Ray Parker

Goalkeeper Gareth Couch marked his senior debut for undefeated Afan Lido with an excellent performance which foiled Taffs Well's attack on numerous occasions in the First Division clash.

He made a number of splendid saves, particularly in the first-half as Taffs Well, playing down the slope, had the lion's share of possession and created a number of good chances.

Couch was quick to show he was more than a match for Taffs Well, saving from Leigh Ashman, cutting in from the left, the chance set up by Brian Burke after 27 minutes.

But Couch was eventually beaten close on half-time when he was deceived by Ashman's high left-footed free-kick from the right, which found the top corner of the far post - an excellent goal.

Paul Evans was unfortunate not to equalise in the 55th minute when his powerful header from Steve Davies' corner was headed off the line by Callum McKenzie in a good, open game.

Afan Lido, who have recalled former manager and player Mark Robinson to take charge of team affairs, following a managerial upheaval, equalised through the fast raiding Andrew Pearson after the break.

The move was sparked by Chris Latham and  Kieran Howells with substitute Dale Lambrick supplying the pass for Pearson to execute a perfectly-struck low shot past the advancing John Howe in the Taffs Well goal.

Lambrick, a 17-year-old, was a replacement for Andrew Wright while 16-year-old Ceri  Cook came on for another 17-year-old Corey Thomas, emphasing the importance being placed on youth.

Afan Lido are not rushing into make a permanent managerial appointment, Robinson quite prepared to hold the reins until Christmas. He has taken over from the trio of Phil Holmes, Paul Evans and Brian Thomas although Evans is still with the club, but as a player.

Afan Lido are expected to appoint a management team from within the ranks or with Afan Lido connections.

Taffs Well: Howe; Padraig Burke, Davies, Passmore, Arthur, Toghill, Edwards, McKenzie, Crock, Brian Burke, Leigh Ashman. Substitutes: James. Newton, Blake, Thomas, Morling.

Afan Lido: Couch, Latham, Wright, Keefe, Evans, Martin, Davies, Howells, Thomas, Pearson, Edwards. Substitutes: Lambrick, Harrington, Best, Cook, Wellington.

Referee: Teifion Cook (Clydach, Swansea).

Ely Rangers 2, Grange Quins 1

by Ray Parker

Table-topping Ely Rangers had a night to remember. The Division Two leaders, aiming for a swift return to the MacWhirter Welsh League top flight, extended their lead to seven points with a hard-earned win over their city rivals who were also relegated last season.

But equally important for Ely was that it marked their first senior game under lights, ending more than three frustrating years of negotiations before finally receiving the green light.

The crowd was three times the normal Saturday afternoon attendance and Ely's patience was rewarded, not only with a good crowd but a victory which should have been more convincing.

Bob Fry, Ely secretary, said: "After three years of haggling with various authorities we have finally got the lights - at a price. It has cost us £80,000 and we were first quoted £37,500 for ordinary lights.

"These are retractable lights and the price went up because they are electronically controlled."

Ely are already planning more Friday night matches which will increase the club's revenue. They already have an excellent playing surface at their Station Road ground along with a good clubhouse. Relegation has not dampened their enthusiasm and they are all geared for a Division One return.

Ely took a 17th-minute lead when Graham Cummings was brought down in the penalty area and Sean Nash converted the spot-kick but he missed the opportunity to double Ely's lead ten minutes into the second-half when Quins keeper Jason Trinder brought down Ely top scorer James Dixon. This time Trinder saved to keep Quins right in the tense game.

Quins made the most of the situation with an equalising goal from Nathan White, his sixth goal in four games.

But their hopes of gaining a share of the spoils were quickly dashed when Cummings put Ely back in front after 64 minutes with a spectacular cross-shot which completely deceived Trinder and a few minutes later Dixon missed an excellent chance to put his side further ahead.

Quins suffered a blow when they lost goalkeeper Trinder who limped off with a leg injury following lengthy treatment. He collided with Ely's Nash who was rather fortunate to walk away without any action from Hengoed referee Gareth Hegarty.

Quins manager Gareth Morgan took over in goal and kept Ely at bay but there was drama right to the end as Ely keeper Ashley Hart finger tipped a dipping shot from Daniel Gibson to safety and so deny Quins a point.

Ely Rangers: Hart; West, Clarke, David Penikett, Osborne, Hibbs, Paul Penikett, Dixon, Nash, Cummings, Loosemore. Substitutes: Matthews, Pugh, James, Fordham, Mattey.

Grange Quins: Trinder; Tingley, Hopkins, Perkins, Henry, Fitzgerald, Tanetta, Kange, Gibson, White, Jeremy. Substitutes: Noor, Williamson, Morgan, Richards.

Referee: Gareth Hegarty (Hengoed).

Llanwern 1 Troedyrhiw 1

by Ray Parker

Troedyrhiw made an impressive start to their MacWhirter Welsh League, Division Two game at Llanwern but couldn't maintain their early promise and happily returned home with a share of the points.

Neither side was at full strength and with players operating out of position it took its toll, particularly in a poor second-half.

Both goals came in the first-half and Llanwern remain in fifth place on 14 points while Troedyrhiw have moved up a couple of places, above Tredegar and Ammanford.

Laurence Owen, Llanwern manager, said: "We had the lion's share of the possession and I think they were happy with point." And that was readily agreed by Derek Showers, Troedyrhiw's assistant manager who said: "In the second-half they looked as if they could have nicked it but we defended well and are pleased with the result. I think that either side could have won the game."

Owen added: "With the amount of players we had out (nine were missing through injury, holiday or suspension) we have got to accept a point. Hopefully we will have four or five back for Saturday's match at Garden Village. I have yet to put out my strongest squad this season."

Troedyrhiw, battling with players operating out of position, made a good start, going into a 12th-minute lead through Richie Collins who produced an excellent near-post finish from the right.

And that after Llanweren's Daniel Bailey had worked himself into good positions on the left, first Troedyrhiw keeper Jason Pendry tipping over the bar and then eased out by Paul Banham.

Troedyrhiw had a 29th-minute chance to double their lead. Ian Cleary's right cross was punched away by Llanwern keeper Chris Hart, but only to Simon Griffiths who steered his shot wide of an unguarded goal.

Ten minutes later Llanwern equalised - but they were fortunate. Troedyrhiw maintained they should have cleared Tom Hooper's cross, allowing Mike Vaux to thud a powerful header onto the crossbar, the ball striking Troedyrhiw defender Brent Hewitt and zipping into the net.

Troedyrhiw's best chance of regaining their lead fell to Cleary when Hart lost his footing but the effort went into the side netting.

Llanwern couldn’t make their crisp passing game count. Richard Shier made an excellent run from midfield but failed to make the most of a Vaux-Bailey move, a perfect counter-attack launched by Hart. Marcus Power also had scoring chances but he too was a little off colour.

Llanwern: Hart; Corey, Tanner, Smith, Binning, Rhys Redman, Hooper, Richard Shier, Vaux, Bailey, Power. Substitutes: Sully, Mark Redman, Stinton, Owen.

Troedyrhiw: Pendry; Lewis, Hewitt, Thomas, Sier, Callan, Griffiths, Banham, Collins, Cleary, Minett. Substitutes: Parker, Williams, Jones.

Referee: Kevin Morgan (Cardiff).

* Roger Howells, Troedyrhiw fixture secretary, has now accepted the post of chairman following the resignation of Gareth Evans.

BARRY TOWN FC FOR SALE

In response to a number of parties expressing an interest in purchasing Barry Town, the Chairman, Stuart Lovering, has decided to put Barry Town on the open market for sale for £495,000. “I’m in communication with an offshore company who have clients interested in purchasing the Club”.

However, as Mr Lovering explains, “the matter needs to be resolved soon because I have just started a massive expansion of Barry Town in a number of areas. We’ve just completed a £50,000 refurbishment of the Club’s Bar and new Restaurant which has been extremely well-received and which is now offering food and catering for special events like weddings and guest dinner speakers like Liverpool’s Alan Kennedy.

Our youth development is constantly expanding – we’re up to about 12 children’s teams this year if a couple of disabled teams join our set-up, including the Academy set-up for the best youngsters in the Vale. By this time next year, I expect to have about 40 to 50 boy’s and girl’s teams in youth development and the Academy. We are about to make contact with all schools in Barry to make formal link ups and offer what help we can to youngsters wanting to develop in football. In addition, we have a new Reserve team to back up the first team. Next year we plan to have a new team in the MacWhirter U19 League and a couple more reserve teams, one in the Welsh League Reserve Division.

We’re also putting together a quality Barry Town squad who are favourites for promotion – underlined by their emphatic 4-1 victory on Saturday against Briton Ferry at Jenner Park, making it three wins out of three at home to start the season.

There’s more spending and a lot more work needed in the coming few months so I need to know now if anyone seriously wants to buy the Club. I want to get Barry Town back into the Premiership and Europe on a sustainable budget from profits - but I have limited resources so it could take time. If someone wealthier than me with greater resources wants to fast-track the club into Europe on a sustainable basis they should come forward now - or leave the Club alone!”

The Club had been put up for sale about two years ago but a few problems remained which deterred investors but which have now been resolved – the Club returning to Jenner Park last season. The Chairman owns about 90% of the shares and is willing to offer any help needed to ensure a smooth transition to any new owner.

Afan Lido 11, Garw 0

by Ray Parker

Garw suffered their heaviest defeat of the young season when they nose dived to yet another double figure defeat at the hands of Afan Lido last night.

The Second Division champions, still reeling from losing the bulk of last season's squad, and manager Chris Wells, have conceded 56 goals in six games, scoring just one goal - a sad state of affairs. But they are aiming to name a new manager early next week, hoping this will prove the first step towards recovery.

Perhaps the most surprising fact to emerge from last night's one-sided affair was that Garw kept Afan Lido at bay for 31 minutes - thanks to overworked goalkeeper Thomas Chorley and the framework.

Mark Jones broke the deadlock and went on to scored a second-half hat-trick, giving him six goals in two home games. The 18-year-old continues to interest other clubs and only recently had a trial with Welsh Premier League club Llanelli.

But an Afan Lido spokesman warned: "We think that because WPL teams know our current financial position that they can dangle a bigger carrot in front of our players. However, we did not see ourselves as a feeder club to WPL clubs. Hopefully our position will change otherwise we could see most of our better players going on to pastures new."

Midfield player Steve Davies has been trying his luck with Bristol City.

Before the break Tomas Wellington, Andrew Pearson - he got a second after the break - and Carl Edwards gave Afan Lido a four-goal interval lead.

Substitute Corey Thomas scored twice in the second-half and was unfortunate not to get a hat-trick and Damon Thomas, another substitute, was also on target.

Mark Samuel, Garw fixture secretary, said: "Hopefully a new manager will bring a few old heads and steady the ship. It will be a big challenge. We all know what has happened to us and we are facing a battle for survival.

"Youngsters have stepped in but it needs an influx of players and that is the challenge and the club knows that."

Caerleon 0, Newport YMCA 2

from Terry Daley

AN OWN goal from Shaun Pearce and a first of the season for striker Lewis Sommers, both before the interval, was enough to give Newport YMCA a 2-0 Welsh League Division One victory at Caerleon.

The result earned YMCA ample revenge for the 2-1 home defeat by the same opposition just eight days previously.

The Newport side, fresh from Saturday’s record 11-1 home win over struggling Garw, had to defend robustly during the opening 15 minutes with goalkeeper Gareth Wesson forced to make a couple of fine saves.

However they had gone ahead as early as the ninth minute when midfielder John ‘Frankie’ Pardue’s 18-yard effort took a huge deflection off Pearce to completely wrong-foot Caerleon goalkeeper John Chorley.

Just 11 minutes later, YMCA doubled their advantage when giant striker Sommers latched onto a loose ball in the penalty area before skilfully lifting the ball over the advancing Chorley.

Hard though Caerleon tried, nothing worked as YMCA ran out fairly comfortable winners.

Caerleon: John Chorley, Matthew Hearne, Jamie Hillier (Todd Quarterely 76), Jason Price, Dale Clarke, Shaun Pearce (Ben Davies 35), Luke Cueto, Martyn Phillips (capt), Chris Jones, Simon Truman, Wayne Jepson (Paul Shepherd 69). Subs not used: Lee Relish, Lewis Andrew. Booked: Phillips (86).

Newport YMCA: Gareth Wesson, Alex Stewart, Craig Ford, Craig James, Daniel Heath, Steve Edwards, Aaron Stewart, Leon Spargo (Jamie Martin 65), Lewis Sommers, John Pardue (capt), Faris Yafai. Subs not used: Gareth Lynch, Alex Jenkins, Fahran Mahmood, Daniel Chamberlain. Goals: Pearce (OG, 9), Sommers (20).

Referee: Paul Walters (Merthyr Tydfil)

MONMOUTH TOWN'S HOME CUP FIXTURE

Wednesday 15 August 2007

Bryntirion Athletic 2, Bridgend Town 0

from Ray Parker

A goal in each half gave Bryntirion a deserved home victory against neighbours Bridgend last night in the MacWhirter Welsh League, Division One.

It was a disappointing performance from Bridgend who didn't strike the heights reached in their opening game of the season when they twice came from behind to get a point at Afan Lido last Friday.

But Francis Ford, a delighted Bryntirion manager, was quick to point out:

"Well, perhaps we didn't allow them to." Maybe he wasn't far off the mark because if Bryntirion had accepted some of their chances they would comfortably have doubled the size of their win.

Bryntirion got off to the perfect start, Rhys Williams heading them in front

after 11 minutes, Shane Dawe providing the right flank free-kick.

Midway through the first-half the powerful Ian Gearie had the perfect chance for a second but Bridgend goalkeeper Brendan Cropley was quickly into action, saving with his legs. Robbie Walters had good chances and should at least have scored twice, once hitting the crossbar and then taking advantage of a Bridgend blunder but fired wide of a gaping goal.

Bryntirion's second goal had an elemnt of good fortune, Gearie supplying a tantalising right cross which Paul Carro, trying to clear, caught the ball on a knee and it simply flew into the roof of the net.

Ford added: "There is always pressure with your first home game of the season - and against our near neighbours. I thought we played very well, both individually and collectively and I was very well pleased with the outcome.

"To scored twice and keep a clean sheet has got to be good. If we had doubled our score I don't think they could have complained."

Drewe Phillips, Bridgend manager, suffered a blow when striker Tom Billings was ruled out with a hamstring injury, picked up at Afan Lido. Phillips said: "He tweaked the hamstring  and we could have taken a gamble but it was not worth  the risk at this stage of the season. He could have aggravated the injury and been out for quite a few weeks.

"In the first-half I thought we just shaded it on possession and we started brightly in the second-half but couldn't get a goal."

Bridgend were also missing Josh Collins, the former Cwmbran Town player, who has one more game to sit out before he is available after picking up a four-match ban while with the Crows.

Bryntirion (4-4-2): Fouanguim; Piotrowski, Dando, Lewis Williams, Andrew Jones (Liddon, 78 minutes); Carpenter (Gavin Thomas, 56 minutes), Vick, Dawe, Rhys Williams); Walters (Hemmens, 88 minutes), Gearie. Substitutes (not used): Jeff Williams, Vokes.

Bridgend (4-4-2): Cropley; Frowen; Hillman, Barry, Carro; Parkin (Rhys Jones, 70 minutes), Gethin Jones, Truan, Hanbury (Plant, 58 minutes), Vardon, Hartley (Ahmed, 50 minutes). Substitutes (not used): Laith, Jawad, Jason Davies.

Referee: Pascal Neale (Swansea).

A second-half goal from Jonathan Kift gave Ton Pentre a 1-0 away win over ENTO Aberaman in the First Division while Tyrone Tucker and Kel Stevens were both second-half marksmen for Caldicot in their 2-1 home win over Gwent rivals Croesyceiliog.

Kevin Bounds and Michael Murphy both scored for Treharris in their 2-2 home draw with Troedyrhiw who were helped to a point by an own goal and an effort from Stephen Minett.

KINGFISHERS SEEK CLUB DIRECTORS

16 August 2007

from Lee Robson, Chairman, Monmouth Town FC

Monmouth Town Football Club is on the lookout for two new Directors. The new posts of Finance Director and Commercial Director have been created to maximise funding opportunities and to manage the financial affairs of the club. The Club is clearly not looking to be complacent about the future and Club Chairman Lee Robson hoped that local talent would be willing to fill the posts.

He said “Even after two games in the Welsh League it is clear that we have to keep building the club’s organisation so that we can keep improving on the pitch. We have some great volunteers at present who are doing good jobs but frankly we need some more focused expertise particularly maximise our sponsorship and to make sure we mage our finances better. Obviously the new Directorships are voluntary positions but they are instrumental in taking the club forward. I’d be willing to discuss commission based fund raising if that’s what’s needed and delighted to talk to anyone who feels they can help the club go from strength to strength”.

Lee can be contact by email at: lee.robson62@btinternet.com.
