KEAVENY STRIKES THREE TIMES AS NEATH HIT BACK

31 October 2005

First division leaders Neath Athletic wiped out a two-goal deficit to triumph 4-2 over former champions Betws at the North Site.

Defensive blunders let in both Jack Thomas and Brian Burke, leaving Betws well set as they were going down the slope. But in a complete reversal of fortunes, Jonathan Keaveny knocked in a hat-trick while Andy Hill atoned for missing a first-half penalty to complete the scoring from the penalty spot.

But Goytre Utd's seven-match unbeaten run came to an end at Bridgend Town, who won 2-1.

A Richard Ryan penalty in the eighth minute led to Goytre dominating the opening half, but they failed to muster another goal. But the Port Talbot village side were unhappy with both Bridgend goals, ex-Briton Ferry front man Gavin Guy and Andrew Mainwaring the scorers, and goalkeeper Gareth Scantlebury was shown a red card for arguing after the game had ended.

Bryntirion remain second six points behind Neath with two games in hand after second-half goals from ex-Swan Damian Lacey and Michael Hartley secured a 2-0 home win over Caerleon.

Continuing to head in the right direction are Afan Lido, who gained a 1-0 victory over Newport YMCA at Mendalgief Road.

The lone goal arrived in the 33rd minute and was credited to Chris Piper. On the hour, YMCA had Martin Phillips red-carded for an innocuous challenge, and despite ex-Swan Luke Harrington making an impression from the bench, the score didn't change.

And with Maesteg Park losing 2-1 against champions Ton Pentre at Tudor Park, that left Neath the only unbeaten club in the top flight.

Park led on the back of a 10th-minute strike from Steve Conaty, with the Bulldogs snapping back 30 seconds later via Dale Price. Carl Thomas knocked in a 70th-minute winner, but there was a feeling that a draw would have been fairer.

Briton Ferry picked up a point in a 1-1 scoreline against Barry Town at White Tips, Ferry new boy Rob Connochie in the 75th minute cancelling out a Gareth Hemmens goal a few minutes earlier.

Garden Village got off to a flying start against Tredegar at Stafford Common, only to be held to 2-2.

Ashley Richards shot them ahead after just 57 seconds, but by the 50th minute parity had been restored.

But in the 87th minute ex-Swan Andrew Bumford, back on holiday from Australia, seemed to have mustered a winner.

However, it wasn't to be and in the final move an Ashley Cole strike secured Tredegar a deserved point.

Gwynfi Utd were left to reflect on missed chances during a 3-0 setback at Merthyr Saints, top scorer Nigel Rogers, Paul Rogers and Chris Evans all missing good openings at 1-0.

Morriston lost by the same scoreline at home against promotion-seeking Pontypridd, but Dingle boss Michael Ellery had no complaints about the outcome.

A Paul Sweeny own goal sent Ponty on their way, with Andrew Hughes netting in each half.

Garw made it five wins on the trot with a 1-0 success at Aberaman; Nicky Hooper netted a 65th-minute winner, while Swansea University goalie John Chorley saved a late home penalty.

Goals from Lawrence James and Paul Atkinson set up a 2-0 home victory for Porthcawl over Cardiff Corries at Lock's Lane, while there were some remarkable scoring deeds in the third division.

Seven Sisters gained a record-breaking 9-4 victory at Penrhiwfer despite trailing 3-2 at the break.

Leon Thomas led the way with a hat-trick, with the others going to Nigel Westall (two), Barry Herdman, Lee Sullivan, Richard Herdman and Nicholas Moore.

West End bounced back to form with a 6-2 victory at Cwmaman thanks to goals from Wayne Jones (two), Darren Griffiths, Neil Phillips, Jeffrey Aspell and David Brown.

Cwmaman scored first through Nathan Davies and last via Timothy Hendra, but in between the Pryderi Park boys proved too good for them.

Bottom-placed Ystradgynlais picked up an important point in a 1-1 draw at Treowen, Craig Hopkins netting in the first half and the Gwent side right on time.

And Pontardawe Town booked the 16th and final place in the next round of the Shamrock Travel Cup with a 4-1 home victory over Ammanford.

Jamie Bowen and Carl Mainwaring netted for Ponty in the opening half, with Mark Dunford making it 3-0 on the restart.

Though Gavin Porter pulled one back for the Rice Roaders, a well executed goal from Dunford saw Ponty safely through.

ROB'S DOUBLE JOY

29 October 2005

Rob Jones struck with a goal in each half to send West End back to the top of the Macron Print Welsh Youth League at Pryderi Park. The Townhill-based side made most of the early running. Scott McKenzie found Jones in space on the left side and he then brought visiting goalkeeper Sam Price into action to make a quality save after 10 minutes.

The action switched to the opposite end eight minutes later, with Ben Hopkins gathering a Ryan Needs free-kick after Steve Anwar had been fouled by Mark Kneath.

On the half hour West End had a chance to move in front when Alfa Bayoli sent a pass into the path of Darren Griffiths, but the former Swansea City youth product sent his shot narrowly wide.

The home side's pressure finally produced the opener after 36 minutes.

Shaun Morgan and Rory Smitham made an aerial challenge for possession from a Jones corner but Morgan was only able to head the ball into his own net.

Four minutes later, Morgan threatened to make amends for that mistake, only to hammer a well-timed shot just past the post following an attacking carved out by Anwar.

With the opening half heading into injury-time, West End struck for the second time. Ceejay Richards delivered a crossfield pass into the path of Jones and he nipped forward and sent the ball into the far corner of the net.

Price continued to be the more involved goalkeeper and did exceptionally well to get down and smother a Griffiths shot after 61 minutes.

Bayoli then attempted to unlock the Goytre defence again, only for Price to push a stinging shot from 15 yards around the upright.

There was no let-up as West End maintained their attacking momentum, and when Jones outpaced Goytre substitute Ashley Ackery, the lively full-back burst infield to send a low angled delivery beyond the reach of Price.

And West End added a fourth in the final minute, Bayoli sidefooting home a cross delivered by the effective Jones.

"The side played really well following a lively beginning, which is what I wanted following our first defeat of the season in our previous match against Pontardawe Town," said West End youth team manager Anthony Wright.

"I believe that the side here can go on to win the league, and what is really promising is the fact that there were eight players in the side who have three more seasons at this level.

"Despite the score being 4-0 it actually could have been doubled, though that would not have been a true reflection of the game,'' he added.

"It was only our second game at home in our first season in the league, so it was very pleasing to get a good start.

"Rob Jones, who scored twice, is an excellent player. He's been on the bench for Llanelli in the Welsh Premier League, and in this match he gave that little bit extra, making a vital contribution to our victory.

"I thought that our defence was on top form, with Chris Hole and Mark Kneath denying the Goytre strikeforce and producing a series of excellent tackles.''

PONTARDAWE FORCED INTO CUP RESHUFFLE

28 October 2005

Pontardawe have three players missing as they attempt to claim the last place in the last 16 of the Shamrock Travel Cup tomorrow. The Swansea side meet Ammanford in a rearranged tie and will be without Steve Crabbe (suspended), Marc Otten (hamstring) and Layton Thomas who is unavailable.

Ammanford are without top-scorer Cerison Davies and manager Neil Rees might well be tempted to include Gavin Porter, who has been scoring regularly in the reserves.

Holders Goytre United, defeated Pontypridd 3-0 to go through.

They led for much of the game on the back of an early strike from Richard Ryan, and in the 70th minute his ninth goal of the campaign doubled the lead.

Goytre signed off with a late goal from Kevin Bartley, and have declared a full-strength squad for their Macron Welsh League match at Bridgend Town tomorrow.

Table-topping Neath head for former champions Betws, and the Llandarcy Park side will be minus top scorer Simon Dyer.

Dyer damaged his neck in last Saturday's 3-1 cup win at Cambrian & Clydach, but apart from that manager Andrew Dyer has a fit squad.

Afan Lido are likely to include Pontardawe import Carl Edwards in their squad at Newport YMCA.

Edwards started his career with the Seasiders in the old League of Wales, and his return is timely as Karl Lewis and Karl Roberts are both suspended while teenager Craig Jones is still ruled out with a broken thumb.

Briton Ferry, without a league win in five starts, face a vital test against Barry Town at White Tips in Treforest while unbeaten Maesteg Park host Ton Pentre looking to extend an unbeaten league record to six games.

The Old Parish side have just one concern. Dean Vokes damaged an ankle during the 3-0 cup win in Blaenrhondda last Saturday.

Garden Village welcome struggling Tredegar to Stafford Common in the second division, and manager Robert Lloyd is forced to make changes.

Mark Lloyd is required for physio duties by Swansea City while Chris Thomas is banned for one game.

However, ex-Swan Andrew Mumford is back on holiday from Australia, and he might turn out with Owen Williams another possibility.

Gwynfi, who gained a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Cardiff Corries at the Riverside last weekend, are further encouraged by the return of three players at Merthyr Saints.

Back in the frame at Merthyr are captain John Edwards, Lee Flay and Luke Williams.

Morriston have home advantage over high-flying Pontypridd with the clubs having experienced differing fortunes in the cup.

While the Dingle men stormed to a 4-0 victory at West End, the Ynysangharad Park club went down 3-0 at Goytre United in midweek.

Morriston boss Michael Ellery is hoping to give a delayed debut to defender Leighton Connor, but ruled out is Liam Todd.

In the third division, West End visit Cwmaman and the Pryderi boys are set to introduce Neil Phillips, younger brother of management team member Lee.

Former Swansea City and Southampton player Richard Jones might also make a first start for the Townhill club. With Nicky Pritchard having received a red card in the cup defeat against Morriston, Lee Adams returns in goal.

Cwmamman have declared an unchanged squad, as have Seven Sisters, who visit Penrhiwfer.

Ystradgynlais also head east, in their case to Treowen, and manager Andrew Hopkins will be without the suspended duo of Andrew Miller and Carl Evans.

SHAMROCK CUP DRAW

 28 October 2005

Another cull on first division clubs will unfold in the third round of the Shamrock Travel Cup on January 28. There are three definite all top-flight pairings - Goytre United v Uwic, Neath Athletic v Ton Pentre and Maesteg Park v Taffs Well - with the possibility of another.

Should Pontardawe defeat Ammanford in their delayed second-round tie tomorrow they will visit Betws.

Draw: Betws v Pontardawe or Ammanford, Garden Village v Caerau Ely, Goytre Utd v UWIC, Maesteg Park v Taffs Well, Merthyr Saints v Llanwern, Morriston v Troedyrhiw, Neath Athletic v Ton Pentre, Penrhiwceiber v Llantwit Fardre.

Ties to be played January 28.

WEST END, MALTSTERS LAND HOME TIES IN FAW TROPHY

25 October 2005

Swansea sides West End and Maltsters Sports have been rewarded for producing five-star displays in the third round of the FAW Trophy.

Both have landed home draws in the quarter-finals next month. West End, newcomers to the Macron Welsh League this season, will host Cardiff side Cogan Coronation.

Maltsters will take on Cynon Valley outfit Cwmbach Royal Stars.

The matches will be played on November 19.

Quarter-final draw: Cefn United v Kerry, Llandudno v Rhydymwyn, Maltsters Sports v Cwmbach Royal Stars, West End v Cogan Coronation.

In the second round of the FAW Women's Cup, Swansea City have also landed a home tie and will clash with Newport City Strikers on November 20.

Llanelli were not so fortunate and will have to travel east to take on Dinas Powys.

Second round draw: Cefn United v Caernarvon Town, Cardiff City Ladies v Uwic, Dinas Powys v Llanelli, Llanrhaeadar v Corwen, Newton v Pennant, Pwllhelli v Llangefni, Swansea City v Newport City Strikers, Welshpool Town v Meifod.

GOYTRE TIE

25 October 2005

Goytre United will play their postponed Shamrock Travel Welsh League Cup tie against Pontypridd at Glenhafod Park tomorrow night (7.15pm).

MORRISTON TOO GOOD FOR WEST END IN CITY DERBY

24 October 2005

Morriston Town triumphed 4-0 over West End in the derby clash at Pryderi Park to reach the last 16 of the Shamrock Travel Cup.

The Dingle men went ahead after half an hour when Neil Simon curled a free-kick around the wall and found the top corner of Nicky Pritchard's net. But the pivotal incident came five minutes on when Pritchard brought down Dean Rosselli in the penalty area and was promptly red-carded.

Richard Mansell took over in goal and was beaten from the penalty spot by Rosselli.

Morriston went on to seal the win with second-half goals from Mark Baker and Michael Chapman.

Unlike the opening round when nine top-flight clubs bit the dust, only the demise this time around of AFC Llwydcoed at Penrhiwceiber in the Cynon Valley derby caused a minor ripple.

League leaders Neath Athletic eventually came through 3-1 against third division Cambrian & Clydach in Tonypandy.

Ryan Frankcom shot Neath ahead, with Damian Roberts equalising right on half-time.

It remained 1-1 until the 75th minute when Martyn James broke the deadlock with a superb 25-metre drive.

And just to make sure, David D'Auria diverted home a Frankcom shot during injury-time.

Just up the road in Blaenrhondda, things proved more straightforward for Maesteg Park, who won 3-0.

Gareth Davies nodded the Old Parish side in front, and two-second half headers from Robbie Walters, advancing him on to 13 goals for the season, saw Maesteg safely through.

Also through to the next round are Garden Village, who won the all second division clash with Pontyclun 1-0 at Stafford Common.

The goal didn't arrive until the 85th minute when Dale Selvedge swung over a decent corner and though Dave Evans knew little about it, the ball struck him on the back of the head and shot home.

Ystradgynlais failed to repeat last year's cup success over Merthyr Saints, going down 5-2 at Ynyscedwyn Road. Though 2-0 adrift at the break, Ystrad hit back with goals from ex-Gwaun-cae-Gurwen striker Mark James and Nicholas Maggs.

The game was in the melting pot, but Andrew Miller picked up a second yellow card and Jamie Thomas converted a penalty.

Another Thomas penalty sent the Saints 4-2 ahead, and they completed the scoring in injury-time.

Cwmaman failed to hold reigning league champions Ton Pentre during the opening half of their Grenig Park showdown.

The Bulldogs had their tails up when leading 4-0 at the break, and though the second period was more competitive, Ton ran out 5-0 winners.

The tie between Goytre Utd and Pontypridd Town that was postponed last Friday will now be staged at Glenhafod Park on Wednesday (7.30pm).

No new date has yet to be announced for the other postponed tie, Pontardawe v Ammanford at the Recreation Ground.

In all probability the draw for the next round will be held on Wednesday evening when the league management committee discuss problems surrounding second division Caerau Ely.

A few matches went ahead in the Macron Welsh League, with second-placed Dinas Powys dropping points during a goalless draw with Caerleon at Cold Bath Road.

In the only other top-flight encounter, a goal from Gareth Hemmings secured Barry Town a 1-0 win at Ely Rangers, while Gwynfi triumphed by the same scoreline in the second division.

A Nigel Rogers strike did the trick for the Cape side against Cardiff Corries at the Riverside.

And Garw made it four league wins on the trot under new boss Christopher Wells with a 3-1 win over Tredegar Town at Blandy.

Although Tredegar took an early lead, goals from Nicky Hooper, Rhys John (penalty) and Swansea University student Dave Truan did the trick for the Pontycymer-based club.

In the third division, Newcastle Emlyn took over leadership following a 2-1 win at Cwmbran Celtic.

Though trailing to a Matthew Caldwell strike at the break, two goals from ex-Haverfordwest County player Niko Algeri jettisoned Emlyn to the top.

REES DOUBLE SETS UP VICTORY

 22 October 2005

Two goals in seven minutes from Matthew Rees settled this local derby to provide the Llandarcy Park visitors with their first win of the season. Lee Bevan and Steve Davies then joined the goal celebrations in the second half to leave last season's MacWhirter Youth League runners-up still searching for their first point of the campaign.

Neath's Rhys Surringer almost made a flying start, only for goalkeeper Kyle Llewellyn to collect his well timed shot from 12 yards.

Port Talbot offered an immediate response and Luke A. Bowen was denied by Ryland Duffield's exceptional save following a cross by Sean Sullivan.

The breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute when Rees stabbed home from close range an opening created by Davies, before adding a second seven minutes later.

In a fast and furious game, Neath snatched a three-goal lead nine minutes into the second half, Bevan heading home a free-kick from Taylor.

Just before the hour mark, Cameron Webb tripped Sullivan in the penalty area but Luke A. Bowen's spot kick went wide of the target before he hit the bar with another chance.

With two minutes remaining, Neath increased the scoreline with a crisply struck Steve Davies shot.

Other results: Goytre United v Garden Village (posponed), Haverfordwest County 1 Briton Ferry Athletic 3, Morriston 2 Afan Lido 1, Pontardawe Town 4 West End 2.

This week's matches:

Sunday, October 23: Garden Villiage v Haverfordwest County, Neath Athletic v Pontardawe Town, West End v Goytre United.

Tuesday, October 25: Afan Lido v Port Talbot Town.

Wednesday, October 26: Briton Ferry Athletic v Morriston Town.

GOYTRE LOOK TO TRAVEL INTO LAST 16

21 October 2005

Holders Goytre United will attempt to be the first club through to the last 16 when they launch the second round of the Shamrock Travel Cup against Pontypridd Town at Glenhafod Park tonight (7.30pm).

The Port Talbot village side, who lifted the cup for the first time at the expense of Pontardawe in Ton Pentre last May, are without new signing Richard Smith as he is cup-tied - Ryan Needs takes his place in the squad. The other 15 ties are tomorrow, with local interest focusing on two derby clashes - Pontardawe at home to Ammanford and the visit of Morriston to West End.

Pontardawe welcome back both Marc Otten and Jamie Rickard and are also likely to introduce Ton Pentre import Richard Cleverly.

Mark Dunford is free to play, as former club Goytre United received a bye in the last round.

Rob Folland, though, misses out with a hamstring injury.

Ammanford have centre-back Gary Davies back in their side, but top-scorer Cerison Davies is unavailable.

Manager Neil Rees is pondering over the inclusion of midfielder Lee Jenkins after he was injured in a motor accident in Northern Ireland a fortnight ago.

West End may parade new signing former Swansea City and Southampton player Richard Jones.

Morriston boss Michael Ellery was unable to include new boy Leighton Connor at Pontyclun last week, but he may hand him his debut at Pryderi Park.

The return of polished midfielder Mark Carlyle from injury has provided his squad with a timely boost.

First division leaders Neath Athletic take a step into the unknown at third division newcomers Cambrian and Clydach.

Having experienced a scare in the last round at another third division club, Newcastle Emlyn, before emerging with a 5-3 success, manager Andrew Dyer is not taking their assignment lightly.

In all likelihood he will leave out Steven Pockett, who is on four yellow cards, and hand chances to Martyn James, Ryan Frankcom, Paul Carpenter and Steve Davies.

Cwmaman host league champions Ton Pentre, with the Grenig Park side welcoming back goalkeeper Morgan Evans.

Garden Village challenge Pontyclun at Stafford Common.

Manager Robert Lloyd has nephew Mark Lloyd free of physio duties with Swansea City.

Paul Bromage also returns to the squad, but Lloyd is expected to give defender Jamie Mansell another week to get over a dead leg.

Ystradgynlais, who take on Merthyr Saints at home for a second successive year in the tournament, might be without both Craig Hopkins and Dave Miller.

Manager Andrew Hopkins is expected to give the pair more time to recover from bumps they picked up last Saturday during the defeat against Cwmamman.

Likely replacements against the Saints tomorrow will be Paul Williamson, Daniel Jenkins and Chris Innes.

Unbeaten first division side Maesteg Park head for Blaenrhondda, and back in contention will be fit-again Matthew Rea.

Betws have slapped a six-month ban on their former player-manager Jonathan Wile.

Defender Wile last week punched colleague Leon Cosker during the Bridgend village side's 5-1 defeat at Ton Pentre.

Goalkeeper Cosker was forced to retire, and had 15 stitches inserted in the mouth wound.

Betws moved swiftly to punish Wile who, in the meantime, had tendered his resignation.

In the Macron Welsh League division one, Briton Ferry host Bryntirion Athletic tonight (7.15pm).

In the absence of Rob Cronick, the Bridgend side had been hit by a goalkeeping crisis, but it has been solved with the inclusion of former Swansesa City player Alex Davies from Swansea outift St Joseph's.

TWO-GOAL DYER WIDENS NEATH'S GAP AT THE TOP

17 October 2005

Neath Athletic beat Bridgend Town 2-0 at Llandarcy Park to open up a five-point gap at the top of the first division.

Two goals from Simon Dyer - giving him eight for the season - did the trick for Neath, who remain unbeaten. Dyer headed them in front in the 35th minute after Bridgend goalkeeper Marty Ellacott failed to cope with a David D'Auria cross.

And Dyer sealed the win on the end of a ball played into the penalty area by Jonathan Keaveny.

Bridgend introduced their latest acquisition - ex-Briton Ferry midfield player Gavin Guy - from the bench at the start of the second half.

The only other unbeaten top-flight team are Maesteg Park, who triumphed 2-1 at Briton Ferry.

The Old Road side bossed the opening half, and should have had more that a Chris Butt strike as reward for their efforts.

Paul Jones then equalised in the 55th minute while five minutes on he saw a shot hit the cross bar, but Lee O'Brien followed up to strike the winner.

Ferry, who paid up subscription arrears allowing the game with Maesteg to go ahead, have a rearranged home league game with Bryntirion this Friday.

Goytre United accounted for former leaders Dinas Powys, with Ryan Penny getting both goals in a 2-0 success at Glenhafod Park.

Penny scored on the end of a Darren Lyons pass after 20 minutes and wrapped things up on the strength of a 55th-minute header.

Holders Goytre now host Pontypridd Town in the Shamrock Travel Cup at Glenhafod Park on Friday (7.30pm).

Pontardawe Town also kept heading in the right direction with a 3-0 home win over Barry Town.

Last season's top-scorer Jamie Bowen fired Pontardawe ahead, and Carl Mainwaring made it 2-0 at the interval.

And the Swansea Valley side completed a comfortable victory with a goal from Rob Folland on 65 minutes.

Afan Lido came from a goal down at the break to beat Bryntirion Athletic 3-1 at Princess Margaret Way.

A ninth goal of the campaign from Jonny Cuss separated the sides for much of the game, but things changed when Lido boss Mark Robinson introduced new signings Ian Jones (Goytre United) and Stephen Parry (Port Talbot Town) from the bench.

Within two minutes of coming on, Jones set up an equalising goal for Chris Piper, and soon after the former Uwic and Pontardawe striker then sent Lido in front.

To round off a memorable debut, Jones got a second goal as the Seasiders won for the third time in the league.

In the second division, Morriston made it two wins on the trot with a 2-1 victory over Pontyclun at Ivor Park.

Michael Chapman gave the Dingle men the lead midway through the opening half, with Pontyclun levelling on the resumption.

But a superb 25-metre volley from Jamie Lydiard - struck in the 50th minute - carried Morriston to a deserved victory.

Garden Village were sunk by an injury-time goal at high-flying Caldicot.

The Village people deserved a point, but a 94th minute free-kick deflected off young Jack Jenkins and flew home.

In a game of few chances, Ammanford played out a goalless draw with Cardiff Corries at the Riverside.

However, Luke Fayers impressed up front for the Rice Road side, while another new signing, Mark Rabaiotti, also looked a useful addition to the squad.

Garw continued their upward spiral with a 2-0 victory over Porthcawl at Blandy thanks to David Truan and Rhys John (penalty).

In the third division, Cwmaman came late to register a 3-2 victory over Ystradgynlais at Ynyscedwyn Road.

Craig Hopkins sent Ystrad ahead with Steve Williams responding, and the sides changed ends on 1-1.

Another burst of scoring unfolded on the restart with Cwm's Timothy Hendra netting, only for Hopkins to level matters.

But a game that Ystrad had dominated for long periods slipped through their hands when Williams's 10th goal of the season settled the issue right on time.

Seven Sisters placed a poor patch of form behind them by defeating AFC Porth 3-2 at the Welfare Ground.

Chris Herdman gave Seven a fourth-minute lead, but midway through the half they found themselves 2-1 behind.

But two goals in the space of five minutes in the approach to half-time saw the Dulais Valley side home.

Andrew Collins headed home a Richard Herdman free-kick and then Lee Sullivan scored direct from a corner.

In the Welsh FA Trophy, holders West End beat Llandrindod Wells 3-0 at Pryderi Park thanks to goals from Danny Kavanagh, Wayne Saunders and Rob Shannon.

SANCTIONS THREAT COULD SINK FERRY'S HOPES

14 October 2005

Doubt has been cast over tomorrow's Macron Welsh League first division encounter between Briton Ferry and Maesteg Park at Old Road. Both Ferry and third division Treowen are set to have sanctions imposed on them by the Welsh League for the non-payment of annual subscriptions that were due on September 30.

The clubs received letters last week, informing them that unless the fees were paid within seven days then fixtures would be suspended.

It remains to be seen whether the money is forthcoming.

If it is not, then the pair face an additional £250 fine for the non-fulfilment of a fixture.

Meanwhile, top billing goes to the Llandarcy Park encounter between new leaders Neath Athletic and Bridgend Town.

Three victories in a week jettisoned the Llandarcy Park side to the top, and manager Andrew Dyer will be selecting from a full compliment of 17 players.

The only slight doubt is over striker Carl Shaw, who picked up a hamstring injury during last Saturday's 2-0 win at Dinas Powys, but he is expected to declare himself fit.

Bridgend, who are still pursuing an interest in Briton Ferry's Gavin Guy, have released both striker Scott Lanyon and midfield player Glenn Powell.

The other in-form side in the first division, Goytre United, have home advantage over second-placed Dinas Powys.

The Port Talbot village side have signed Richard Smith from Pontardawe Town, but heading in the opposite direction is former Maesteg Park striker Mark Dunford.

The only injury doubt surrounds striker Darren Lyons, who is suffering from a calf strain.

Afan Lido are set to introduce former Uwic and Pontardawe striker Ian Jones from Goytre United for their home clash with Bryntirion Athletic.

However, goalkeeper Brian Thomas is still ruled out with a thigh strain, and Wyn Walters is again in line to deputise.

The other absentee is talented front-runner Craig Jones, who broke a thumb during last Friday night's warm-up against AFC Llwydcoed.

Pontardawe Town have signed Richard Cleverly from Ton Pentre ahead of their meeting with Barry Town at the Recreation Ground.

However, Cleverly, formerly of Goytre United and Neath, will sit out the clash against Barry, but new recruit Mark Dunford (Goytre United) is available.

Paul Davey returns to squad duties, but missing from their line-up will be Marc Otten, Steve Crabbe and Jamie Rickard.

In the second division, Garden Village have signed the Briton Ferry trio of Philip Miles, Derek Jenkins along with his brother Jack.

Derek Jenkins and Miles are expected to be drafted into the squad for the demanding task at high-flying Caldicot with Richard Uffendale set to deputise for Paul Bromage, who is attending a wedding.

Ammanford have Gary Davies, Gareth Jones and Lee Jenkins all missing for their trip to Cardiff Corries, but new signing Mark Rabaiotti is included along with the return of top scorer Cerison Davies.

Morriston visit Pontyclun, and Dingle boss Michael Ellery is likely to introduce new signing Leighton Connor (Seven Sisters).

The third division clash between West End and Monmouthshire club Goytre has been called off as the Swansea side host Llandrindod Wells in the Welsh FA Trophy.

Seven Sisters hope to have Richard Herdman and his cousin Barry Herdman back for the visit of AFC Porth.

Bottom-placed Ystradgynlais host Cwmaman.

Ystrad have centre-back Carl Evans suspended, following his dismissal in last Saturday's 2-1 loss at Goytre, but they have signed striker Mark James from Gwaun-cae-Gurwen.

Cwmaman have brought sweeper Robert Griffiths back from Ammanford, and he is included in their squad.

NEATH TOP FIRST DIVISION AFTER MARVELLOUS WEEK

10:00 - 10 October 2005

Neath Athletic rounded off a great week with a 2-0 victory at Dinas Powys to go top of the first division.

Having previously accounted for both Caerleon and Taffs Well, a 44th-minute goal from Liam Hancock set them on their way at the Murch Field. And the Llandarcy Park side sealed victory when Andy Hill exposed the Cardiff side at the back and ran the ball into an empty net.

Neath replaced Dinas Powys at the top, while Bryntirion clung on to third spot with a 2-1 home win over Ely Rangers after goals by Darren Robinson and ex-Swan Damian Lacey (penalty).

Maesteg Park, like Neath, maintained an unbeaten record, the Old Parish side beating Pontardawe Town 2-0.

Gareth Davies put Park ahead in the 10th minute, but Ponty came more into the game in the second period. But Steve Stone fluffed an 84th minute penalty, Gary Wager pulling off a grand save, and right on time Maesteg hot-shot Robbie Walters registered his 11th goal of the campaign.

Goytre Utd are also beginning to hit form, a point they proved in coming from 2-0 down after 12 minutes to pip Uwic 3-2 at Cyncoed.

A Richard Ryan goal triggered the Goytre recovery, and Ryan Penny made it 2-2 at the break.

The winner was registered on the hour with Michael Waters the architect of another Ryan strike.

But Briton Ferry, who introduced former West End boy Rob Connochie from the bench, sunk to a 3-2 defeat against Betws at the North Site.

Goals from Gavin Thomas and Jonathan Wile sent the Bridgend side clear, with ex-Neath defender Dan McGrath pulling one back right on half-time.

Ferry fancied their chances as they had the slope and strong wind to encourage them, only to concede a sloppy goal to Brian Burke.

It wasn't until injury time that Connochie made it 3-2, but by then Betws were home and dry.

A Peter Cheeseman goal after half an hour earned Bridgend a 1-0 home win over champions Ton Pentre, but Cheeseman went on to miss a second-half penalty.

In the second division, Garden Village struck early to record a 1-0 victory over Troedyrhiw at Stafford Common.

After a quarter of an hour, Dale Selvedge planted a corner on the potent head of Jamie Mansell, who nodded home.

A lone goal also carried Morriston to a 1-0 victory over Cardiff Corries at the Dingle. But the Morriston winner didn't arrive until the 75th minute when a Neil Simon free-kick caught the Radyr side at sixes and sevens.

Dean Rosselli latched on to the error and struck home his third goal of the campaign.

Ammanford felt the force that is the Garw revival, going down 3-1 at Rice Road. The Swansea University contingent once more rose to the occasion, with goals from Dave Truan, Christian Burge and Nicky Hooper sending the Blandy boys clear.

Nathan McNeil pulled one back for Ammanford, whose goalkeeper Rob Thomas then made an excellent penalty save to deny Burge.

Porthcawl Town suffered late heartbreak against Croesyceiliog at Lock's Lane, losing 2-1.

Craig Watkins shot Croesy ahead, with Paul Atkinson responding, and it remained 1-1 until Mark Wadden's 91st-minute winner.

It proved a disastrous day for all four local sides in the third division, with West End surrendering a 100 per cent record in a 3-1 loss at Pentwyn Dynamos.

Though Darren Griffiths put West End ahead, two goals from ex-Goytre Utd striker Lee Bridgeman made it 2-1 at the interlude.

Jeffrey Aspell then missed a 70th-minute penalty for the Townhill side, who had Griffiths sent off for a second bookable offence.

And to compound their misery Mark Bird clipped their wings with a late goal.

Seven Sisters went under 1-0 at Blaenrhondda, while Cwmaman saw a 1-0 interval lead surrendered in a 5-2 home defeat against Chepstow.

Paul Pugh sent Cwm ahead, only for them to go 5-1 down before Michal Rybicki completed the scoring.

And Ystradgynlais, who lost 2-1 against Goytre in the Monmouthshire countryside, completed the tale of woe.

Dave Miller netted for the Swansea Valley side, who held Goytre to 1-1 at the break, only to concede a late decider.

ALL SMILES FOR GOYTRE

08 October 2005

In a week dominated by cup draws, Goytre United had two reasons to be cheerful. The Port Talbot village side's reward for winning 2-1 at Haverfordwest County in the Welsh Cup last Saturday was a home pairing with Troedyrhiw in the next round.

And on Tuesday they learnt they had also been given a home tie in the Shamrock Travel Cup with another second division team - Pontypridd Town.

Goytre are building something of a reputation as a cup side - they won the Shamrock Travel Cup for the first time last season.

"Our performance against Haverfordwest was superb, and becoming the first side to win at Bridge Meadow in 18 months said it all," explained assistant manager Andrew Radford.

"The win at Betws in the league the previous Saturday proved important - but Betws and Haverfordwest are light years apart.

"I know getting involved in cup competitions can act as a double sword, especially when you are challenging for a league title, but on the other hand cup runs generate excitement in the changing room.

"Winning becomes infectious, but Troedyrhiw and Pontypridd are two of the best teams in the second division.''

Briton Ferry face a trip to Carmarthen Town on November 5.

This is a repeat of last season's West Wales Senior Cup final with Ferry retaining the silverware on the back of a penalty shoot-out success.

Ferry did well last Saturday to edge out Aberaman 1-0.

The goal that did the trick for the Old Road side came as early as the fifth minute when Ashley Stevenson headed home a Sam Brown free kick.

"We should have utilised the wind and wrapped the tie up by half-time," said Briton Ferry coach Paul Barrow.

"In the end we forced to cling on, even though Aberaman were reduced to 10 men during the final quarter of an hour.

"Some first-class defending from Chris Butt and Marcus Evans saw us through to the next round."

Switching to the Shamrock Travel Cup, two derby clashes provided the main focus in a draw that saw the nine first division survivors all avoiding each other on October 22.

West End will relish a pop at Morriston at Pryderi Park while last year's losing finalists, Pontardawe, were given home advantage over Ammanford.

West End chief Donny Smitham is looking forward to the visit of the Dingle men.

"Morriston play in the division above us, and they have also beaten Afan Lido in a cup competition this season," said the former Haverfordwest player.

"It promises to be a very interesting tie, and we will show them all the respect they deserve.''

Morriston boss Michael Ellery said: "West End have already earned respect in Welsh League circles and I'm sure they will reserve a warm welcome for us on and off the field.

"I'm sure our boys will relish a Swansea derby cup tie.''

Morriston will get a taste of a local cup-tie tomorrow when they host St Joseph's in the West Wales Senior Cup (2pm).

Ammanford, who bowed out of the Welsh Cup 7-0 at Maesteg Park now face a demanding trip to another first division club in the Shamrock Cup.

Last season they did manage to hold champions Pontardawe to 2-2 in the second division at Rice Road, having lost 6-2 at the Recreation Ground.

Garden Village drew second division colleagues Pontyclun while Maesteg Park travel to Blaenrhondda.

Cwmaman were given a plum draw at home to Ton Pentre with Neath taking a trip to third division pacesetters Cambrian & Clydach.

Ystradgynlais's home tie with Merthyr Saints forms a repeat of last season when the Swansea Valley side won 4-3 after extra-time.

"We are again looking forward to do battle with Merthyr Saints in the cup, but at the moment improving our league standing is of more importance," said Ystradgynlais manager Andrew Hopkins.

Draw: AFC Porth v Taffs Well, Blaenrhondda v Maesteg Park, Caerau Ely v Abertillery, Cambrian & Clydach v Neath, Chepstow v Troedyrhiw, Croesyceiliog v Llanwern, Cwmaman v Ton Pentre, Garden Village v Pontyclun, Goytre Utd v Pontypridd, Llantwit Fardre v Caldicot, Penrhiwceiber v AFC Llwydcoed, Pontardawe v Ammanford, Treowen v Betws, UWIC v Pentwyn Dynamos, West End v Morriston, Ystradgynlais v Merthyr Saints.

Last Saturday's league programme might have been slimmed down owing to the cup, but it nevertheless generated some significant results.

Neath hit Caerleon for six at Llandarcy Park, running out 6-1 winners, while Pontardawe defeated ambitious Bridgend Town 1-0.

Second division Morriston experienced the Garw revival, losing 3-1 at Blandy.

Dai Thomas headed the Dingle men in front, but a hat-trick from Christian Burge saw the Pontycymer-based side take the spoils.

It wasn't a good day for Garden Village and their popular manager Robert Lloyd.

Nine months after his son Stuart damaged his spleen at Porthcawl, his other son Neil broke a leg last Saturday at Gwynfi.

And only prompt attention from manager Lloyd prevented his son from receiving an even worse injury.

While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, he strapped both legs together, keeping the tibia and fibula bones in line.

"Once again I can only praise the work of hospital staff, everyone at Bridgend was superb and couldn't do enough to quell my anxiety.''

NEATH PAY THE PENALTY

08 October 2005

Rhys Surringer and skipper Gary Taylor scored at the end of each half as Neath took their FAW first-round Youth Cup tie into extra-time. But a penalty shootout denied the Llandarcy Park side progress into the next round after Stephen Davies and Surringer missed the target.

It took Neath 17 minutes to move into their attacking stride as both sides struggled early on. Former Swansea City youth product Davies created a promising opening, releasing Taylor, who sent a shot from 15 yards flying just over the crossbar.

Four minutes later they were probing the Cardiff side's defence once more with a Matthew Rees throw from near the corner flag, but Cameron Webb headed wide of the upright.

Neath found themselves a goal behind after 24 minutes when, having conceded a free-kick just outside the penalty area, Ryan Blanch caught the defence off guard with a delicate chip over goalkeeper Ryland Duffield.

Neath's first good opportunity arrived on 35 minutes when a Liam Killa shot was deflected behind for a corner by Frank Appong.

Taylor sent over the flag kick into the goalmouth, only for Davies to be denied by Adam Webb's fingertip save.

Neath suffered a second setback after 42 minutes when Daniel Nash found frontrunner Rasal Abdul in space and he fired home a shot just beyond Duffield's reach.

With half-time approaching, Neath opened their account after Luke Squibb released Cameron Webb. He then picked out the unmarked Surringer, who sent an angled shot beyond the reach of Adam Webb.

Neath began the second half with a fresh sense of confidence and Surringer sent a Taylor cross flying narrowly wide of the upright from 10 yards.

Soon after, a Taylor free-kick from halfway was seized upon by Lee Bevan, only for the attacking full-back to send a well-timed header straight into Webb's arms.

With nine minutes of the second half remaining, Taylor attempted to snatch the equaliser for Neath but Webb was alert to make a reflex save.

Neath finally grasped a lifeline on 89 minutes to take the contest into extra-time, being awarded a penalty by match official Paul Fisher when Killa was tripped by Ben Perkins. Taylor stepped forward to power the spot kick into the bottom corner.

Both sides were unable to grab the winner in extra-time, so forcing the tie into penalty kicks.

Quins hit the net four times, the outcome being decided when Davies's attempt crashed against the goalframe, then Surringer's spot kick was saved by Adam Webb.

"It was really disappointing to go out in the first round because, as on several occasions this season, we've dominated but have been unable to score goals," said Neath Athletic's youth team manager David Evans.

"I thought our second-half performance was a vast improvement on the opening 45 minutes, but yet again we failed to take the chances we created.

"In these competitions there has to be a winner on the day and we slipped up with a couple of missed penalties."

NEATH ALL SET TO MOUNT CHALLENGE

07 October 2005

Neath defeated Taffs Well 4-0 at home in midweek to leave themselves in a perfect frame of mind to challenge Dinas Powys for the Macron Welsh League first division leadership at Murch Field tomorrow. Goals from Simon Dyer, Andy Hill (penalty), and Dale Gardiner left the Llandarcy Park side on course for the double over the Cardiff side.

They completed the scoring with a late Hill strike, and it bettered the 2-0 opening day win over Taffs Well.

The only injury problem surrounded defender Jock Fairbairn, who came off at half-time with an ankle injury, but he is expected to face Dinas Powys when two unbeaten sides go head to head.

Afan Lido launch the programme against AFC Llwydcoed at Princess Margaret Way tonight (7.30pm).

The Seasiders have midfield ace Leigh Shrimpton back from a prolonged suspension, and Paul Evans has also completed a ban.

However, new Goytre United recruit Ian Jones does not become available until Sunday, and in all likelihood he will make a club debut at home to Bryntirion a week tomorrow.

The division's third unbeaten team, Maesteg Park, host Pontardawe Town, with Tudor Park chief Andrew Rickard welcoming back Dean Vokes.

Pontardawe still have Marc Otten suspended, while they are also likely to be without injured striker Ryan Fahey. However, Paul Davey has completed a one-match ban.

Goytre United travel to Uwic and managers Craig Duggan and Andrew Radford have a clean bill of health, following last Saturday's Welsh Cup heroics at Haverfordwest County.

The students, beaten just once in five league starts, are beginning to run into form and could well mount a championship challenge.

Briton Ferry visit the Bridgend suburbs to take on former champions Betws, and face the prospect of being without suspended Gavin Guy and injured Chris Butt (knee).

But they have signed front-runner Richard Howell from Neath, and are hoping to welcome back both skipper Leigh Morgan and defender Richard Colwill.

In the second division, Garden Village entertain a Troedyrhiw side that has reached the last 32 of the Welsh Cup.

Neil Lloyd, who broke a leg during last Saturday's 1-1 draw against Gwynfi United at the Cape, is likely to be replaced by his cousin Mark Lloyd.

Morriston welcome Cardiff Corries to the Dingle, and manager Michael Ellery hopes to have Mark Baker back in his starting line-up.

And Mark Carlyle is likely to reappear in Sunday's home clash with St Joseph's in the West Wales Senior Cup (2pm).

Striker Luke Fayers, a recent signing from Carmarthen, is set to make his Ammanford debut at home to Garw.

But managers Neil Rees and Huw Preece fear the Rice Road side could be without Cerison Davies, Gareth Jones and Lee Jenkins against a side that has been recently been strengthened by new player-manager Christ- opher Wells.

Seven Sisters will be looking to place last Saturday's disappointing home defeat by Treowen behind them at Blaenrhondda, while West End's 100 per cent record goes on the line at Pentwyn Dynamos.

Last month, West End struggled to record a 2-1 win over the Cardiff side that launched their new Pryderi Park base.

Pentwyn won plenty of admirers at Townhill on the day, and a side containing the likes of Gary Twynham, Lee Stephens, Ryan Cachia and Lee Bridgeman will force West End to pull out all the stops.

But the Pryderi side's hopes are boosted by the return of free-scoring striker Andrew Tyrrell.

Cwmaman are set to introduce new faces at home to Chepstow, while Ystradgynlais have Andrew Miller back for their trip to the Monmouthshire countryside to face Goytre.

SHAW ON SONG AS NEATH HIT CAERLEON FOR SIX

03 October 2005

Neath Athletic rose to second place in the first division with a 6-1 home win over Caerleon.

The unbeaten Llandarcy Park side put recent failings in front of goal behind them to record a third win in seven starts. Dale Gardiner gave them the lead, only for Caerleon to level, but goals from Andy Hill and Carl Shaw (two) made it 4-1 at the interlude.

Shaw completed a hat-trick on the resumption, and a late goal from Simon Dyer completed a good day at the office.

A victory over Taffs Well at Llandarcy Park this Wednesday would leave Neath in a position to challenge Dinas Powys for top spot on the weekend.

Afan Lido held Dinas Powys to 2-2 at the Murch Field but the Seasiders could have easily returned home with maximum points.

Though Karl Lewis gave Lido a fifth-minute lead, they went on to fluff several gilt-edged chances, and with 10 minutes to go found themselves 2-1 down.

But Karl Roberts drove home a Greg Hurley cross to provide his side with a welcome point ahead of Friday's home league clash with AFC Llwydcoed.

And Pontardawe Town heaped more misery on ambitious Bridgend Town, triumphing 1-0 at the Recreation Ground.

A fortnight earlier the sides had played out a 3-3 stalemate at Coychurch Road, but on this occasion chances were like gold dust.

In the end, Carl Mainwaring latched on to a long throw in from Ian Morgan and Ryan Fahey beat goalkeeper John Chorley from three metres.

In the second division, Morriston came a cropper 3-1 against Garw at Blandy.

Though Dave Thomas headed the Dingle men into an early lead, a hat-trick from former Lancashire Schools striker Christian Burge saw Garw home.

Ammanford failed to cope with the threat of Jason Hollis in attack and went down to a 3-1 defeat against Caerau Ely at Cwrt yr Ala.

Hollis struck twice for the Cardiff side, and the only crumb of comfort for the Rice Roaders was when Cerison Davies completed the scoring from the penalty spot.

Garden Village were held to a 1-1 draw by Gwynfi Utd at the Cape in a clash that saw the Gorseinon side lose Neil Lloyd to a broken leg.

At the turn of the year, manager Robert Lloyd's other son Stuart suffered serious spleen damage at Porthcawl.

Village took an eighth-minute lead when Steve Bater converted a Dale Selvedge corner, but Gwynfi levelled through John Edwards.

In the third division, Seven Sisters turned in a poor display in losing 1-0 at home to Treowen, while Cwmaman were edged out 2-1 against Llanwern at Spytty Park.

An eighth goal of the campaign from Steven Williams sent Cwm in front, and soon afterwards he should have doubled the lead.

Two defensive blunders allowed the Steelmen to seize the initiative, but even then Williams and Timothy Hendra both wasted chances to salvage a point for the Carmarthenshire men.

GOYTRE CAUSE THE SHOCK OF THE ROUND

03 October 2005

Goytre United are the toast of South West Wales following their superb 2-1 giantkilling Welsh Cup second-round win at Haverfordwest.

The success is all the more remarkable as the Bluebirds had not suffered defeat on their own patch since Connah's Quay triumphed at Bridge Meadow in January 2004. The visitors' assistant manager Andrew Radford was thrilled by his side's triumph.

''We are all chuffed. It's a great scalp for the club,'' he said.

''Haverfordwest came out of the blocks at a tempo we found hard to match or were used to and striker Tim Hicks caused us a lot of problems.

''But we had a good chat at half-time and started to win ball in key areas of the field. We stifled their strengths and started to express ourselves.

''Confidence increased and Ryan Penny's great header put us right back in there and we went from strength to strength.''

Hicks gave the home side what appeared to be a platform for victory with a superb 22nd-minute strike and only the wordwork and resolute Goytre defending prevented the lead stretching.

Influential Ian Turner sparked the fightback with good approach work and his pin-point cross found Penny's head and he powered the ball home.

And midway through the second period, Wyn Thomas pulled back Darren Lyons and Richard Ryan fired home the spot-kick winner.

It completed a miserable 24 hours for the Pembrokeshire club, who announced financial cutbacks in an attempt to avert a crisis.

The decision could force the departure of several of Deryn Brace's prized players.

Brace put on a brave face, saying: ''We have to keep our chins up. This is one of those times when we have to try to stick together and I'm convinced that a majority of my players will stick with the club.

''But I'm not pretending it will be easy and this result was a big blow both on the field and financially.

An emotional Brace continued: ''It would be easy to walk away at a time like this but this club is in my blood and I always promise myself that when I left the club would be in better shape than when I arrived.''

While Haverfordwest plunged the depths, Carmarthen hit the heights with an embarrassingly easy 11-0 thumping of Welsh League division two side Cardiff Corries.

Former Corinthian Mattie Davies hammered a first-half hat-trick and defender Gary Lloyd also hit the target three times, twice via the penalty spot. Other goals came from Richard Kennedy, Mark Dodds, new boy Saad Essa, Danny Thomas and Sacha Walters.

Carmarthen manager Mark Jones had mixed feelings following the slaughter.

''Of course I'm delighted with the win and the fact that we have enjoyed a good day because you have to relish the good times,'' he said.

''But I did feel for Corries, who are a smashing club with a great tradition and a superb playing surface.

''The conditions were excellent and it encouraged me to play with two wide men and that really paid dividends and caused them huge problems.''

Llanelli also enjoyed a goal feast at Stebonheath Park, trouncing visitors Risca & Gelli from Welsh League division three 8-2.

It was a stroll in the park for Spanish favourite Rudi Torres and former Newport County frontman Nick Harrhy, who both cracked hat-tricks.

Anthony Wright and a spectacular goal from Kirk Huggins completed the rout, and manager Lucas Cazorla Lucque will be hoping his team's goal drought has now officially ended.

The only other shock to match Goytre's effort was at Lex XI where struggling Connah's Quay came a cropper 4-2 after extra time.

There were no other top-flight casualties other than in the two all-Welsh Premier ties where holders TNS beat Welshpool 4-1 and Caersws thrashed Grange Quins 5-3 after leading 5-0 with five minutes remaining.

Third division high-fliers West End failed in their bid to reach the last 32 of the Welsh Cup.

The Pryderi Park boys, who beat Afan Lido 3-0 in the last round, went under 3-2 against Croesyceiliog at Woodland Road.

A goal down after 27 minutes, the Townhill side battled back with goals from Darren Griffiths and Rory Smitham taking them in 2-1 ahead.

But Croesy's aerial threat twice caught West End out late on and their brave cup challenge was grounded.

But Briton Ferry made progress at second division Aberaman, winning 1-0.

The goal that separated the sides arrived as early as the fifth minute when Ashley Stevenson headed home a Sam Brown free-kick.

Ferry then missed a hatful of chances, and even though the Cynon Valley side were reduced to 10 men in the 75th minute, they mounted a grandstand finish.

Maesteg Park surprisingly bowed out 2-1 during extra time against Pontyclun at Ivor Park - and with it went a 19-match unbeaten run dating back to a January defeat by Goytre Utd.

In a tie low on either quality or excitement, the Old Parish side trailed to a Geraint Pitt strike at the break.

They were then thrown a 67th-minute lifeline when Robbie Walters converted a penalty after Tyrone Pope was adjudged to have handled.

That took proceedings into extra time, and in the 119th minute Wayne Morgan converted a penalty to take Pontyclun through.

Ystradgynlais also mounted a strong challenge and could count themselves unfortunate to bow out 3-2 against Bryntirion at Ynyscedwyn Road.

An eighth goal of the season from Jonny Cuss put the Bridgend side in front, but Ystrad hit back with goals from Dave Miller and Nicholas Maggs.

It wasn't until the 75th minute that ex-Swan Damian Lacey put Bryntirion back in front, while soon after Leigh Pratt knocked in the winner.

Even then a superb shot from Liam Soroka forced a great save from Bryntirion goalkeeper Rob Cronick, and right on time a Craig Hopkins effort was scrambled off the goal line by Lacey.
