SKEWEN SECURE PLACE IN THE FIRST
DIVISION |
30 April 2005 |
| One thing
is for certain: Skewen Athletic will be playing in the first division
next season. However, the longstanding debate regarding the position
of Neath following last month's proposed merger with Skewen rumbles
on.
When the merger between
the two clubs was finalised and the new Neath Athletic club unveiled,
it was not envisaged that the Llandarcy Park side would occupy one of
the three relegation spots.
But when Ely Rangers beat relegated Garw 4-0 at Blandy on Tuesday
night the relegation trapdoor opened up on Neath.
However, three clubs might not go down as nothing has been cemented
regarding the relegation of Afan Lido from the Welsh Premier or the
elevation of Grange Quins.
If Lido stayed put and Grange went up that would probably lead to
Neath remaining in the top flight. But if the opposite is the case and
Lido come down and Grange are not promoted, three clubs would be
relegated to the second division.
As Neath's plight worsened over the last month so the debate grew as
to whether the new club should be given the right to play in the top
flight.
If Neath were relegated then Neath Athletic should play in the second
division has been one suggestion.
But others feel that because Skewen are destined to secure a good
finish then Neath Athletic have the right to play in the first
division.
This week no one from either Neath, Skewen or the league would be
drawn on the somewhat thorny subject.
But it has emerged that Skewen would pull out of the merger if their
top-flight status came under threat.
So, basically if Neath are relegated the Llandarcy Park club can
either play on in the second division or withdraw from the league.
If they decide to pull out then they could still merge with Skewen
during the close season - and presumably the partnership would have a
Skewen-orientated name.
But things will have to move quickly as the other main concern for
Skewen is a ground for next season.
At the moment Tennant Park is showing its age and suffers from
vandalism, and one of the prime benefits for Skewen was a new future
at the plush Llandarcy Park.
So it's anyone's guess what will develop over the coming weeks, but
one thing is for certain, more column inches will surely be devoted
over the coming weeks to the love affair between Neath and Skewen.
While Neath were officially relegated on Tuesday night it was
celebration time at Pontardawe Town, who were promoted following a 5-1
home win over Aberaman.
It was only a question of time before Ponty rubber-stamped an
immediate return to the first division - and they did it in style.
Three goals in as many minutes just before half-time from Jamie Bowen,
Jamie Rickard and Layton Thomas took the Swansea Valley side out of
sight by the interval.
Richard Lewis got their fourth while Bowen rounded things off with his
23rd goal of the season.
But with promotion in the bag, Ponty want to go up as champions - and
their finish is far from plain sailing.
Second-placed Newport YMCA, 4-1 home winners over Pontyclun on
Tuesday, form the biggest threat to them returning to the first
division as champions.
YMCA and Ponty met at Mendalgief Road this afternoon, and a Ponty win
would confirm them as champions.
Either a draw or a Newport win would prolong the issue, leaving extra
emphasis on their remaining programmes.
Because Ponty's home game last Saturday with Merthyr Saints was
postponed they have been forced to hire Maesteg Park's ground to
accommodate the fixture a week today.
Cricket at the Recreation Ground made that a necessity, and their
final game is away to Tredegar on May 10.
Newport YMCA's three remaining matches are all at home, involving
Garden Village (May 3), Porthcawl (May 7) and Merthyr Saints (May 14).
Below them it remains an ever-changing picture with Bryntirion's
surprise 2-1 win at Tredegar dragging them back into the promotion
frame.
The Bridgend village side were drinking in the last chance salon at
the top of the Gwent Valleys on Tuesday.
Despite trailing to an early goal from Ryan Durham, Bryntirion boss
played his final trump card in calling on goal aces Richard Jago and
Brandon Walters.
It surprised many around Bridgend that the pair, who have figured all
season in the regional goal chart, had been relegated to the bench.
However, Jago nodded them back on terms after an hour with his 19th
goal of the season.
Better followed in the 75th minute when former Bridgend man Walters
also headed in an Ian Gearie ball to take his tally to 20th goal for
the campaign but also the winner.
So, going into this afternoon's matches, Bryntirion are behind
third-placed Tredegar by two points, however, they do have two games
in hand.
After the clash with Aberaman this afternoon, Bryntirion have four
remaining matches.
They face Ammanford at home on Tuesday night and Penrhiwceiber (May
7).
There are also trips to Seven Sisters on Thursday night and then
Tillery on May 14.
Tredegar, who entertained Garden Village today, move on to
Penrhiwceiber on Wednesday before hosting Pontardawe on May 10.
Whether or not fourth-placed Pontypridd can sustain a promotion
challenge forms the other debating point.
They can only finish on a maximum of 69 points, and it remains to be
seen whether that will be enough should Bryntirion or Tredegar drop
points.
Pontypridd welcomed Merthyr Saints to Ynysangharad this afternoon,
while a new date has yet to be announced for last Saturday's postponed
home game with Cardiff Corries.
It is no wonder that Welsh League fans have been riveted to the second
division this winter.
It has provided some fascinating entertainment, and could well do
right to the end of its campaign.
Tuesday's clash between Porthcawl and Ammanford provided a few talking
points in the Lock's Lane clubhouse afterwards.
The Rice Roaders won the day in devastating fashion, 6-2, thanks to a
Nathan Jones hat-trick.
Their other goals came from top scorer Paul Hughes (his 22nd of the
season), the excellent Gavin Morris and teenager Matthew Fisher, son
of Phil.
Porthcawl opened and closed the scoring through Christian Pascoe and
Rhys Owen respectively with referee Eddie King making two key calls
during the opening half.
Porthcawl's Thomas Marlow was sent off for alleged foul and abusive
language after Nathan Jones had given Ammanford a 2-1 lead in the 30th
minute.
And soon after Ammanford goalkeeper Craig Morris was only yellow
carded for handling outside the box.
Porthcawl were unhappy on both accounts, but the way that Ammanford
made the extra man count during the second half was invigorating.
The Rice Roaders have heard it all before as to why their name has
been linked with relegation for much of the season as opposed to the
comfort of mid-table.
While league tables never lie, they have belied a lowly standing for
most of the season.
But their performance against the Seasiders led to an emphatic win -
and probable safety.
The only nagging doubt is a late Tillery revival that no one would
have predicted until last Saturday.
The Gwent side, who had been stuck on 19 league points for an
eternity, came from 3-2 down at the break to slay Aberaman 7-3.
Ammanford's remaining games are at Bryntirion on Tuesday followed by
Pontypridd at Rice Road a week today.
The curtain comes down on their season at home to Tillery on May 12,
and by then all associated with the Carmarthenshire club hope their
future participation in the second division is assured.

PONTARDAWE'S TITLE-
CHASERS CHASE THE DOUBLE OVER RIVALS |
29 April 2005 |
|
Pontardawe look to take another step down the road towards the second
division title in tomorrow's top-of-the-table Motaquote Welsh League
encounter at Newport YMCA. Over the past month YMCA have emerged as
the main threat to the Swansea side making an immediate return to the
top flight as champions.
In the reverse fixture
at the Recreation Ground in December, Pontardawe recorded a 3-0 win.
Marc Otten misses the game because of suspension, but they are boosted
by the return of Paul Davey and Simon Davies.
''Clinching promotion was our first objective, but we now looking
towards the title and reaching the league cup final,'' said Pontardawe
general manager Jonathan Wilsher.
In the first division Skewen challenge Dinas Powys at the Murch Field
and in an unchanged squad, defender Ian Vaughan is set to start.
Goytre United take on Caerleon at Glenhafod Park, and will be looking
towards an improved display on Wednesday when they were held to a 1-1
home draw by relegated Neath.
The Port Talbot side will once again be without Darren Lyons and Ian
Jones, and during their closing away matches against Grange (May 3)
and Briton Ferry (May 11).
With lowly Tillery looking to have turned their season around, that is
beginning to worry fellow second division strugglers Ammanford,
Morriston and Seven Sisters.
Morriston entertain Llanwern in a six-pointer and have Jules Parry
back from injury, but Dean Rosselli is suffering from a hamstring
pull.
Ammanford are without fixture while Seven Sisters are also involved in
a six-pointer against visiting Cardiff Corries.
Seven, who must win their four remaining matches to have any real
chance of avoiding the relegation trapdoor, welcome back goalkeeper
Adrian Barnsley.
Garden Village, who travel to third-placed Tredegar, will be looking
to get Wednesday's 5-1 defeat at Penrhiwceiber out of their systems.
A goal from teenager Matthew Thomas was all Village had to show for
their troubles, but manager Robert Lloyd welcomes back top scorer Ben
Brown and Paul Bromage at the top of the Gwent Valleys.
Village are also in league action on Sunday, hosting Porthcawl, and
are looking for improved displays.
Third division Ystradgynlais have a home double-header over the
weekend, challenging relegated Fields Park Pontllanfraith tomorrow and
Newcastle Emlyn on Bank Holiday Monday.
The only injury doubt worrying manager Andrew Hopkins surrounds Ioan
King, who has a hamstring strain.
Cwmaman - without a win in their last eight games - visit Pentwyn
Dynamos.

PONTARDAWE PROMOTED BACK TO DIVISION ONE
|
27 April 2005 |
|
Pontardawe Town last night celebrated promotion back to the first
division of the Motaquote Welsh League following a 5-1 home victory
over Aberaman. The Swansea Valley side, who have headed the table for
most of the season, scored three times in as many minutes just before
half-time.
Goals from Jamie Bowen,
Jamie Rickard and Layton Thomas made it 3-0 at the interval, but they
then had Marc Otten sent off.
Richard Lewis extended the lead before Aberaman hit back with an
Anthony Jenkins penalty, only for top scorer Bowen to complete the
scoring with his 23rd goal of the season.
Second-placed Newport YMCA, 4-1 home winners over Pontyclun, continue
to trail Ponty by five points, but the biggest losers of the night
were third-placed Tredegar.
The Gwent side suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Bryntirion, whose
promotion ambitions are back on track.
Though trailing to a first-half strike from Ryan Durham, the
fifth-placed Bridgend side took the spoils on the back of goals from
substitutes Richard Jago and Brandon Walters.
Ammanford went on a goal spree at Porthcawl, triumphing 6-2 to further
allay relegation fears.
Porthcawl, who had Thomas Marlow dismissed after half an hour, opened
the scoring through Christian Pascoe and completed it via Rhys Owen.
But in between the Rice Roaders made the extra man count, with Nathan
Jones getting a hat-trick and Paul Hughes, Gavin Morris and substitute
Matthew Fisher also on target.
In the first division, Welsh Premiership applicants Grange Quins won
4-0 at Gwynfi Utd to close to within two points with two games in hand
over AFC Llwydcoed, who suffered a 5-1 mauling at UWIC.

LIVELY GAME AS SKEWEN
IMPRESS |
26 April 2005 |
|
Unwittingly Skewen Athletic helped to resign merger partners Neath to
relegation in Motaquote Welsh League Division One. With Afan Lido
relegated from the Welsh Premiership - unless a three-point deduction
is overturned by an appeal - that means the Welsh League is set to
gain a club.
It was thought likely
the status quo would have operated but promotion-seeking Grange Quins
now look unlikely to go up.
If that is the case, three teams will go down and Neath now occupy the
third relegation spot.
So, Skewen's victory over once-mighty Quins lessened the chances of
them going up - and increased the chances of Neath being relegated.
It has led to Skewen questioning the merger, owing to the threat of
the new Neath Athletic club being asked to operate in the second
division next winter.
But that proved a sideshow to a lively game that saw ex-Swan D'Auria
bring a goal drought to a dramatic end. He had failed to score since
netting in a 3-1 win over Ammanford at Rice Road in the second
division on January 24, 2004. But his scoring knack returned with a
vengeance during the second half when he hit the target twice.
Skewen went ahead in the 20th minute when ex-Maesteg Park star Dale
Gardner found the top corner of the Grange net.
But Paul Evans dragged Grange back on terms five minutes later, and
that led to Skewen missing some good chances to retake the lead. Both
Peter Sheath and top scorer Andy Hill clattered the woodwork but at
the other end, Andrew Fairbairn blocked a goal-bound shot.
D'Auria sent Skewen back in front on the restart only for Grange to
find another equaliser, this one coming from Phil James.
But in the 65th minute, D'Auria went one on one with goalkeeper Adrian
Tucker, and got the better of the ex-Maesteg man.
After that Hill was offered two good chances to kill the game off
without doing so.
That meant the game was on a knife-edge to the end, but Skewen clung
on.

|
RELEGATION IS NOW LOOMING
|
26 April 2005 |
| This
defeat almost surely condemned Neath to one of the relegation places
in Motaquote Welsh League Division One. Their final position has been
a source of interest since the merger was announced last month with
first division colleagues Skewen Athletic.
But it appears as if
Skewen have made contact with the league, regarding Neath's plight.
And the answer they got wasn't to the Tennant Park club's liking, as
it appears the sentiment suggested the new Neath Athletic club would
play in the second division next winter.
That scenario wasn't acceptable to Skewen, who are destined to finish
in the top six places, and they are now trying to distance themselves
from the merger.
Whether the damage has been done remains to be seen, but the other big
issue if the merger is called off is the future of Neath.
Presumably, they have three options.
They could fold; play on in their own right in the second division or
go under the Skewen banner in the first division next season.
Presumably, if Neath folded or went in with the next door neighbours
then Skewen would play out of Llandarcy Park.
Skewen's ground at Tennant Park has come in for criticism of late and
the planned merger with Neath would have taken them from one of the
poorest stadiums on the circuit to arguably the best.
So these are interesting times for both Neath Port Talbot clubs.
On the field of play, Neath conceded twice to Graham Cummings against
Ely Rangers.
Steffan Rogers, who was making a senior debut in the home goal, was
given no chance with the first effort from Cummings in the 40th
minute.
Cummings struck again in the 65th minute, but five minutes from time
Neath were thrown a lifeline on the back of a penalty.
Substitute Paul Carpenter then saw his spot-kick saved by Dave Boulton,
but he chipped in the rebound.
During the closing stages, the Llandarcy Park side finished with a
flourish, and Keith Phillips and Richard Howell both went close.
Neath's last outing of the season is at Goytre Utd on Wednesday
evening.
Whether it is their final game only time will tell.

|
MIXED FORTUNES FOR MERGER PAIR MAY CAUSE
PROBLEMS |
25 April 2005 |
| Skewen
Athletic defeated Grange Quins 3-1 at Tennant Park to further dent the
Cardiff side's Welsh Premier League aspirations. As a result Grange
fell five points behind second-placed AFC Llwydcoed who, like new
champions Ton Pentre, haven't applied for Welsh Premiership status.
Goals from Dale Gardner
and David D'Auria twice sent Skewen ahead, but the sides were locked
on 2-2 in the 50th minute.
D'Auria, who hadn't previously scored this season, then got a
65th-minute winner as Grange lost for the third successive time.
However, Neath suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Ely Rangers and are
now likely to fill one of the three relegation spots.
As a result it has placed a question mark against their merger with
Skewen as the league might rule that the new Neath Athletic club has
to play in the second division.
Two goals from Graham Cummings sent Ely into a two-goal lead, but
Neath then won an 85th-minute penalty that substitute Paul Carpenter
had saved, only for him to follow up and score.
But despite Keith Phillips and Richard Howell being presented with
late changes, Neath slipped into the bottom three for the first time.
A late goal from Andrew Hughes won the title for Ton Pentre, who were
held to a 1-1 draw by Goytre Utd at Ynys Park.
The Port Talbot village side led for most of the game after a Mark
Dunford strike but in the end they rued missed chances.
This is the sixth time in eight seasons for the Bulldogs to snap up
the title, but once again they wish to stay put.
Briton Ferry won 2-0 against Gwynfi Utd at the Cape, Rob Cann getting
both goals.
It wasn't until the 65th minute that Ferry made the breakthrough,
Steven Griffiths setting up Cann.
A great save from Ferry goalkeeper Chris Curtis then protected the
lead before a 30-metre screamer from Cann settled the issue on 75
minutes.
Maesteg Park wound up their campaign with a goalless draw against
neighbours Betws at Tudor Park.
In a game of few chances, Park had the better of things and only a
fine save from their ex-goalkeeper Leon Cosker prevented them
finishing on a high.
However, new Maesteg manager Andrew Rickard will reflect on a 14-match
unbeaten run during the close season.
In the second division, table-topping Pontardawe Town's home game with
Merthyr Saints was one of seven matches lost to waterlogged pitches.
In all probability Ponty will now hire Maesteg Park's ground to fulfil
the fixture as cricket takes over at the Recreation Ground this week.
That postponement allowed Newport YMCA, 3-2 winners at Penrhiwceiber,
to move within five points of Ponty from the same number of games
played.
Tredegar Town consolidated third spot with a 1-0 home win over Seven
Sisters in a game ruined by a serious injury.
Former Ystradgynlais player Paul Kelly broke a leg and is being
detained in hospital at Merthyr until tomorrow.
Striker Nigel Westall did a great job in goal as Adrian Barnsley and
Nicky Elkins were both injured, but in the end Seven were undone by a
65th-minute goal from Ryan Durham.
However, Bryntirion Athletic lost more ground in the promotion race
after being held to a 2-2 home draw by Morriston.
The Dingle men were twice ahead through Dean Beniamous and a Dean
Rosselli penalty, only for Brian Burke to muster equalisers.
That means Bryntirion must get something out of tomorrow's trip to
Tredegar to remain in the promotion race.
However, a collective sigh of relief was heard at Rice Road after
Ammanford gained a 2-1 home victory over Caldicot.
Though still not safe, Ammanford came from behind after conceding in
the 46th minute.
Paul Hughes levelled on the hour, while their top scorer settled the
issue five minutes later with his 21st goal of the season.
Ammanford will be looking to take another step towards safety at
Porthcawl tomorrow evening.
The shock result unfolded at relegation-threatened Tillery, who came
from 3-2 down at the break to beat Aberaman 7-3 and in the process
lift themselves off the bottom.
In the third division there was no joy for Cwmaman, who went down 2-0
against promoted Troedyrhiw at Grenig Park.
Two first-half goals did the trick for the Willows team, and only goal
a fine goalkeeping display from Richard Walton prevented Cwm from
suffering an even heavier defeat.

GOYTRE PATCH THINGS UP TO TAKE ON THE
CHAMPIONS |
22 April 2005 |
| Goytre
United will have to make enforced changes for tomorrow's Motaquote
Insurance Welsh League clash with champions elect Ton Pentre at Ynys
Park. The Port Talbot village side were forced to substitute both
centre-back Jeremy Chandler (groin) and striker Darren Lyons
(hamstring) during the first half of Wednesday's 3-0 home defeat
against high-flying Maesteg Park.
To make matters worse
goalkeeper Andrew Sparkes was also hobbling near the end as a
nine-match unbeaten run came to an end.
Goytre also fear a backlash after Ton lost 3-0 at home to Uwic on
Wednesday, placing title celebrations on hold.
Maesteg, who host Betws in a derby encounter, will become the first
side to complete league fixtures.
Their attempt to extend an unbeaten sequence - that dates back to
January 22 when losing 1-0 at home to Goytre - is boosted by the
return of Lee Michael from Spain.
While Maesteg boss Andrew Rickard can start preparing for next season,
Grange Quins will be looking to place their Welsh Premiership
aspirations back on course in Skewen, following defeats against
Maesteg and Uwic.
A Skewen victory could further dent their hopes of a second-place
finish, and the Tennant Park men have defender Ian Vaughan back from
an ankle injury.
Another significant game is the Llandarcy Park encounter between Neath
and Ely Rangers.
If Neath are to avoid a bottom-three finish, then they will have to
find a repeat of the form that secured them a 4-2 win at Ely on
December 4.
Neath head Ely by only a point, but the Cardiff side have played three
fewer fixtures.
Briton Ferry take on improving Gwynfi at the Cape, and are likely to
welcome back Steven Cox from injury.
Second division leaders Pontardawe, who entertain Merthyr Saints, will
be without both Simon Davies and Jamie Rickard.
Should they complete the double over Saints, and results elsewhere go
their way, then they could be celebrating an immediate return to the
top tier.
Ammanford will be looking for a home victory over Caldicot to allay
relegation fears.
The Rice Roaders have already ruled out both John Garland and Jamie
Harris for the remainder of the season, and there is a doubt attached
to Steven Francis (dead leg). Ammanford are hoping that the return of
Gavin Morris will see him earn his spurs.
Garden Village boss Robert Lloyd will be digging deep into his
resources to come up with a side to host Porthcawl.
Out for the rest of the season are Dave Rimmer, Owen Williams, Jamie
Evans and Dave Evans while Chris Thomas is suspended.
There are fitness doubts surrounding both Lewis Cann and Neil Lloyd
and teenager Alex Jones, who performed admirably in the 1-1 midweek
draw at leaders Pontardawe, is set to retain his place.
Morriston have defender Leon Dennis back for their clash at
Bryntirion, who must surely win to keep their flagging promotion hopes
alive.
Seven Sisters could do the promotion-seeking clubs a good turn if they
get anything out of their trip to Tredegar.
The Dulais Valley club, whose midweek game with Bryntirion was
abandoned after just five minutes because of a thunderstorm, have
Nigel Westall back from suspension.
In the third division, unpredictable Cwmaman host top-of-the-table
Troedyrhiw.
Back in December, a goal from Paul Pugh earned the Carmarthenshire
side a share of the spoils in a 1-1 outcome at the Willows.

LYONS THE PRIDE OF IN-FORM GOYTRE
|
18 April 2005 |
|
Goytre Utd extended
their unbeaten run in the first division to nine matches with a 1-0
home victory over AFC Llwydcoed. The all-important goal came on the
hour when Darren Lyons headed in a Michael Waters cross. The win took
Goytre to within four points of third-placed Llwydcoed, who host Garw
tonight in a re-arranged fixture.
But with second-placed
Grange Quins losing 2-0 to UWIC at Leckwith, suddenly their Welsh
Premiership aspirations look less certain.
Ton Pentre were crowned champions after winning 3-0 at Garw after
goals from Carl Thomas (two) and Alyn Jones.
Grange now face a test of character tomorrow evening against Briton
Ferry, buoyed by a 4-2 win over Neath at Old Road.
Goals from Sam Brown and Richard South saw Ferry go in 2-0 up, with
Richard Howell pulling one back on the restart. However, Ferry
responded to that threat with further goals from Sam Brown and Derek
Jenkins, although Neath's Keith Phillips had the final word.
The defeat plunged Neath into greater danger of finishing in the
bottom three ahead of Saturday's make-or-break home game with Ely
Rangers.
Maesteg Park stretched their unbeaten run to 12 games with a 1-1 draw
at Dinas Powys.
Maesteg were well in control when Dave Lewis gave them the lead in the
70th minute, only to come under the cosh when the home side levelled
late on through Kurt Beetles.
Skewen Athletic paid the price for poor finishing in a 1-1 draw with
Barry Town. Ashley Richards missed some clear-cut chances inside the
six-yard box, and it was against the run of play when they fell behind
in the 55th minute.
However, Skewen made an immediate response with a superb goal from
ex-Maesteg star Dale Gardner.
Bridgend Town maintained their challenge for minor honours with a 2-1
victory at Taffs Well, while Gwynfi built on a 3-3 midweek draw
against Bridgend by winning 2-0 at Betws.
This was the first victory of the season for the Cape side, David
Jones and Steve Boydell getting the goals.
In the second division, Pontardawe won 2-0 against Cardiff Corries at
the Riverside to remain comfortably ahead of the chasing pack.
Ponty took a 10th-minute lead when Rob Folland capitalised on sound
approach work from Steve Stone and Richard Smith. However, it wasn't
until the 88th minute that they sealed victory with Jamie Bowen's 20th
goal of the season.
Next up for Pontardawe is tomorrow's home game with Garden Village,
who beat Caldicot 2-1 at Jubilee Way.
Village, who introduced teenagers Matthew Thomas and Matthew Martin,
did the damage early on. Ex-Swan Andrew Mumford curled in a free-kick,
and a mazy run from Ben Brown ended with a diving header from Craig
Blake to make it 2-0 after 15 minutes.
Though Village conceded a sloppy goal just before the break, they
clung on to record a ninth away win of the season.
Bryntirion's flagging promotion hopes suffered another setback when
they were held to 0-0 at Pontyclun.
But Morriston made it three wins on the trot with a 3-1 win over
Tillery at the Dingle.
They went a goal down early on but Dean Beniamous equalised before
half-time.
Michael Chapman put them ahead midway through the half, with Beniamous
wrapping things up near the end.
Seven Sisters lifted themselves off the bottom with a surprise 3-3
home draw against second-placed Pontypridd.
Despite being without four key players, Seven shot into a three-goal
lead after 28 minutes through Richard Barness (2) and Paul Kelly.
A Leighton Connor own goal gave Pontypridd hope, and two second-half
headers from Chris Summers supplied them with a scrambled point.
But Ammanford suffered a 2-1 setback at Aberaman despite taking an
early lead through Nathan Jones.
Second-half goals from Leighton Price and Anthony Jenkins left the
Rice Roaders just above the drop zone.
In the third division, a goal in each half condemned Cwmaman to a 2-0
defeat at Croesyceiliog, while Ystradgynlais battled back from a 1-0
home defeat by Caerau Ely on Saturday to beat visiting Goytre FC 2-0
yesterday.
A 20th-minute goal from Dave Miller set them up, and early in the
second half Dave Griffiths headed home a Liam Soroka free-kick.

UNITED HAVE EYES ON
THAT THIRD SPOT |
15 April 2005 |
| Goytre
United host AFC Llwydcoed tomorrow in a Motaquote Insurance Welsh
League game that could have a significant bearing on minor honours in
the first division. The Port Talbot village side have their sights set
on third place, and going into the encounter they trail the Cynon
Valley side by seven points with a game in hand.
Goytre, who played out a
goalless draw at Skewen on Wednesday to stretch an unbeaten sequence
to eight matches, have declared a fit squad.
Skewen, who challenge Barry Town in Treforest, are still coming to
terms with the loss of Carl Mainwaring.
Selection problems led to him walking out on the Tennant Park club
last Saturday, and Skewen only had 12 available players against Goytre
in midweek, but manager Andrew Dyer is hoping to welcome back both
Craig Hanford and Ian Vaughan.
Neath will be scrapping for survival points in a derby encounter with
Briton Ferry at Old Road.
The Llandarcy Park side have only two other fixtures - Ely Rangers
home and Goytre United away - in order to avoid the three relegation
places.
Maesteg Park will be looking to extend their unbeaten record to 12
matches when they take on Dinas Powys at the Murch Field.
The Old Parish side will be without Dave Blackwell, who damaged a knee
in last Saturday's win over Grange Quins, but Paul Jones has recovered
from illness and the club are also hoping to have Ian Shepherd back.
Second division leaders Pontardawe will be looking to take another
step towards promotion against Cardiff Corries at the Riverside.
Ponty have three key men returning to duties in Paul Davey, Ian Morgan
and Layton Thomas, but they will be without Richard Lewis while Carl
Edwards is doubtful.
Nearest challengers Pontypridd head for bottom-of-the-table Seven
Sisters.
Morriston will be looking to make it three wins on the trot when they
meet relegation-threatened Tillery at the Dingle.
Mike Ellery's side, buoyed by away victories last week over both
Porthcawl and Ammanford, are strengthened by the return of both Leon
Dennis and Neil Simon.
However, there is a fitness doubt surrounding Carl James and Jules
Parry is once more ruled out.
Ammanford will be aiming to get something out of their trip to
Aberaman.
However, the Rice Roaders have some key men missing in John Garland,
Jamie Harris, Robert Griffiths and Gavin Morris.
A win for Ammanford would see them close to within two points of
Aberaman, who occupy 12th position.
Garden Village, who travel east to Caldicot, will be bidding for a
double, having won the reverse match 1-0.
Manager Bob Lloyd is hoping to have defender Dave Rimmer back from
injury.
In the third division, Ystradgynlais have another double-header at
Ynyscedwyn Road. They challenge Caerau Ely tomorrow and Goytre on
Sunday.
Top-scorer Craig Hopkins, who has scored 28 goals, will miss both
games because of suspension.
Cwmaman visit promotion-seeking Croesyceiliog.

ALL GOYTRE FINAL
POSSIBLE |
15 April 2005 |
| The
possibility of an all Goytre final in the Welsh Football League's
Shamrock Travel Cup still exists after the pair avoided each other in
the draw. Goytre United were paired with Briton Ferry in an all-first
division clash while second-division pacesetters Pontardawe Town meet
third-division side Goytre from Monmouthshire.
Ironically, Ferry
challenge Goytre Utd at Old Road on May 11 - the week before their
semi-final meeting - during their closing league fixtures.
The semi-final ties will be staged during the week starting May 16.
No venues or dates are yet available for the semi-finals, but the
final will be staged at Ton Pentre the following week.

PONTARDAWE INCREASE
LEAD AT THE TOP |
13 April 2005 |
|
Pontardawe last night increased their lead at the top of the Motaquote
Welsh League division two with a 3-1 home win over Llanwern. Ponty
made a poor start, conceding an early goal to Carl Baugh, while Jamie
Rickard missed a penalty. Steve Stone did equalise with a penalty in
the 53rd minute, and further goals from Marc Otten and Jamie Bowen saw
them home.
But Garden Village's
promotion hopes were more or less ended by a 2-1 home defeat by
third-placed Newport YMCA.
Ex-Swan Andrew Mumford shot Village ahead, but YMCA levelled through
Phil Tranter and took the honours thanks to a Mark Lloyd own goal.
In the first division, Gwynfi Utd held Bridgend Town to 3-3 at the
Cape.
Two goals from Steve Boydell put Gwynfi ahead, but they went 3-2 down
until Lee Flay struck in the 75th minute.

MAESTEG HIT BACK TO DENT QUINS'
PROMOTION BID |
11 April 2005 |
| Maesteg
Park defeated Grange Quins 2-1 at Tudor Park to lessen the chances of
the Cardiff side gaining promotion to the Welsh Premiership. Though
trailing to a second-minute strike from Paul Evans, the Llynfi Valley
side bounced back to stretch their unbeaten run to 11 matches.
Daniel Platt got his
first goal for the club direct from a 49th-minute corner after Park
were controversially denied a penalty for hand ball surrounding last
defender Adam Lewis.
The winner came in the 65th minute, Lee O'Brien heading in a Matthew
Rea cross to move on to the nine-goal mark for the season.
This defeat for Quins has left Ton Pentre firm favourites for the
title, but Grange are also now being threatened for second place by
the chasing pack.
Another side in the midst of a productive run, Goytre Utd, made it
seven wins on the trot by defeating Taffs Well 2-0 at Glenhafod Park.
A defensive blunder gifted Kevin Bartley a 10th goal for the club, but
the Port Talbot village side didn't make things safe until
injury-time.
A poor clearance from visiting goalkeeper Marty Ellacott ran to Mark
Dunford and the West Countryman collected a ninth goal since switching
from Maesteg Park in mid-season.
Skewen Athletic returned to winning ways with a vengeance, defeating
Bridgend Town 4-1 at Tennant Park.
A fortnight earlier the sides had played out a drab 1-1 draw at
Coychurch Road, but Skewen built confidence around first-half goals
from ex-Garden Village man Steve Evans and an Andy Hill bicycle kick.
Nana Baah pulled a goal back for Bridgend, who had Jason Bertorelli
sent off late on, but Skewen finish with a flourish.
A 24th goal of the season from Hill made it 3-1 in the 55th minute,
with Peter Sheath heading in their final goal.
But there was no joy for merger colleagues Neath, who lost 2-1 to
Betws at Llandarcy Park.
Player-manager Jonathan Wile shot the Bridgend village side ahead, but
it wasn't until the 80th minute that Steve Amos doubled the lead.
Ashley Stevenson struck late on for Neath, who were left to reflect on
missing a hatful of first-half chances.
Briton Ferry drew 2-2 at Caerleon. Sam Brown gave them the lead in the
12th minute, but having gone 2-1 down, a late header by captain Leigh
Morgan earned Ferry a deserved point.
Garw's minibus broke down on the motorway, causing a postponement of
their fixture at AFC Llwydcoed. The game will now be staged a week
today.
Second division leaders Pontardawe tossed away a 3-1 lead against
promotion rivals Pontypridd at the Recreation Ground and were forced
to settle for 3-3.
Though the Ynysangharad Park side were on the scoresheet first via
Dean Morris, Pontardawe went on to seize the initiative.
Jamie Rickard scored direct from a corner and then converted a penalty
after Paul Davey had been felled in the box.
To round off a good half, ex-Goytre Utd man Richard Smith made it 3-1
at the break.
But Pontypridd battled back to gain a point on the back of late goals
from ex-Swan Jonathan Keaveny (penalty) and Jerome Jeremiah.
In the other top-of-the-table encounter, Newport YMCA further dented
Bryntirion's promotion aspirations in triumphing 4-0 in the Bridgend
suburbs.
Having lost 3-0 at home to Pontypridd in midweek, Bryntirion were sunk
by goals from Aaron Stewart, Steve James, Philip Tranter and Lewis
Summers.
All this led to Pontardawe maintaining a three-point lead over
Pontypridd with four games in hand, but Newport YMCA and Tredegar, 1-0
home winners over Caldicot, made up ground.
Garden Village missed out on moving into fourth place after being held
2-2 by Aberaman at Stafford Common.
Adrift 2-0 at the interlude, Village got back in contention through
Craig Blake, while Mark Lloyd mustered an injury-time equaliser.
Morriston improved their survival chances by winning 2-1 at Ammanford,
John Parry and Mark Baker striking inside 10 minutes.
Though Paul Hughes collected a 19th goal of the season, Ammanford's
race had already been run.
Goals in each half from Porthcawl's Michael Flanagan and Del James
plunged Seven Sisters into deeper relegation trouble with a 2-0
setback at Lock's Lane.
In the third division, Ystradgynlais wrapped up a double over Chepstow
in triumphing 3-0 at Larkfield.
Following a goalless opening half, a 28th goal of the season from
Craig Hopkins sent Ystrad on their way, and they rounded things off
with further goals from Andrew Miller and Dave Griffiths.
But Cwmaman rued missed chances in a 3-2 home defeat by Treowen; Chris
Williams and Steve Williams got the Cwm goals.

MAESTEG PUT THEIR NEW-FOUND FORM TO TEST
|
08 April 2005 |
| Maesteg
Park will be looking to maintain their remarkable transformation in
the Motaquote Insurance Welsh League when they challenge title-seeking
Grange Quins at Tudor Park tomorrow. Unbeaten in their last 10
matches, the Llynfi Valley side are the form side in the division at
the moment, and during this productive run they have accounted for
leaders Ton Pentre at Ynys Park.
Fifth-placed Maesteg
will be without injured Ian Shepherd, but his loss is countered by the
return of ex-Garw star Dean Vokes.
Former Park favourites Adrian Tucker, Dale Raven and Brian Showdry are
likely to be in the Grange line-up together with recent acquisitions
Eston Chiverton and Paul Evans.
Goytre United have also pieced together a useful run - winning their
last six league and cup games - and welcome Taffs Well to Glenhafod
Park.
The Port Talbot village side are eyeing a third-place finish, and will
be looking to overturn a 4-3 defeat at Rhiw Ddar in November.
Managers Craig Duggan and Andrew Radford are expected to give a vote
of confidence to the side that secured a 2-0 midweek victory over
Briton Ferry.
Following back-to-back defeats, Ferry will be hoping to get back on
track against Caerleon at Cold Bath Road.
Though striker Rob Shannon - who moved from Goytre last month - has
left Old Road, they can dip into a full-strength squad.
Successive victories over Garw and Dinas Powys have boosted Neath's
chances of avoiding the relegation places, and they will be looking to
maintain the winning streak at home to Betws.
The other merged club, Skewen, take on Bridgend at Tennant Park in a
quickfire rematch. Just a fortnight ago the sides played out a 1-1
draw at Coychurch Road.
Back into the Skewen squad go Carl Mainwaring and Andy Hill, but
ex-Swan David D'Auria along with Maesteg Park recruit Dale Gardner are
missing.
Two big matches dominate the second -division scene with Pontardawe
hosting Pontypridd and Bryntirion entertaining Newport YMCA.
Pontardawe have Rob Folland back from illness, but there is a doubt
over defender Jamie Mansell while Ian Morgan is still suspended.
Pontypridd looked impressive during a 3-0 win at Bryntirion in
midweek, and Pontardawe will have to counter the threat posed by a
polished front three comprising Kerry Harding, ex-Swan Jonathan
Keaveny and Chris Summers.
Morriston moved out of the bottom three on Wednesday following a 1-0
win at Porthcawl and they will be looking to carry on the improvement
against Ammanford at Rice Road.
The Dingle side have Neil Simon and Paul Edwards back in their squad
and although Leon Dennis is still suspended, Geraint Jones did a sound
job against the Seasiders.
Ammanford, who have failed to score in their last four outings, still
have John Garland ruled out and Jamie Harris sits out the game owing
to five bookings.
Garden Village, 2-0 midweek winners over Ammanford, could be boosted
by the inclusion of former Swansea City player Andrew Mumford
(Aberystwyth) for their encounter with Aberaman at Stafford Common.
Seven Sisters visit Porthcawl, who failed to do themselves justice
against Morriston in midweek, while in the third division Cwmaman host
Treowen.
Ystradgynlais make the long journey east to take on Chepstow, and they
have already ruled out Dave Miller through a back injury.
However, his brother Andrew has completed a five-match ban as the
Swansea Valley side bid for a double having triumphed 5-4 at
Ynyscedwyn Road in November.

TOWN EASE DROP FEARS
|
07 April 2005 |
| Morriston
Town beat Porthcawl 1-0 at Lock's Lane last night to move out of the
relegation zone in the Motaquote Welsh League division two. The Dingle
side took over 15th place from Llanwern, who have also played two more
matches than them.
A swirling wind made
control difficult for both teams with the goal that settled the issue
coming a minute into the second half.
A deft chip from the edge of the box by Michael Chapman deceived
Porthcawl goalkeeper William Alston, and the ball crept in at the far
post.
The Seasiders seldom troubled goalkeeper Jonny Martin, and the Swansea
side ran out deserved winners.
In the first division, leaders Ton Pentre beat Barry Town 2-1 at Ynys
Park to go 11 points clear of Grange Quins, who have three games in
hand.

GARDNER CLEARS THE GROUND FOR VITAL
NEATH WIN |
04 April 2005 |
| Neath
completed a first division double over Dinas Powys at the Murch Field
to ease their relegation fears. Having taken the reverse fixture 2-1
back in November, the introduction of Chris Gardner pepped up the
Llandarcy Park side's attack in a 2-0 success.
Gardner set up a goal
for Ryan Penny in the 10th minute, and he was then instrumental in
setting up the clinching strike for Richard Howell in the 67th minute.
However, the other partner in the West Glamorgan merger, Skewen
Athletic, suffered a 2-0 defeat against Taffs Well at Rhiw Ddar.
The Tennant Park side have now gone seven games without a win, and on
this occasion two first-half goals condemned them to defeat.
But Maesteg Park's remarkable run continued against Barry Town at the
White Tips ground in Treforest.
The Llynfi Valley side extended an unbeaten run to 10 games with a
thumping 4-0 victory. Seven of the games in the 10-match run have been
on the road, and on Saturday they went ahead through Paul Jones after
just 10 minutes.
Further first-half goals came from Rob Walters and Lee O'Brien, while
a 46th-minute penalty from Walters finished the Dragons off.
This lifted Walters onto the 16-goal mark for the season ahead of
Saturday's home encounter with second-placed Grange Quins.
Kevin Bartley produced a hat-trick as Goytre Utd won 4-0 against Garw
at Blandy.
Bartley bagged two goals in the first half, while Darren Lyons netted
against his old club on the hour.
Bartley got his third just before the end, leaving Goytre in good
heart to face Briton Ferry in a re-arranged league fixture at
Glenhafod Park tomorrow (7.15pm).
Goals from Andrew Hughes, Carl Thomas and Bradley Young secured
leaders Ton Pentre a 3-0 win at Briton Ferry, while lowly UWIC failed
to allay their relegation worries in a 1-1 stalemate against Bridgend.
Thomas Billings gave the students a first-half lead, with Daniel Jones
restoring parity midway through the second period.
The second division promotion race is hotting up, but leaders
Pontardawe Town remain ahead of the chasing pack after a 2-0 win at
Seven Sisters.
However, Ponty were made to battle by a gritty Seven side, who belied
their lowly standing. Layton Thomas put Ponty ahead in the 33rd
minute, with Richard Lewis sealing victory near the end.
But three other promotion-chasing clubs, Bryntirion, Newport YMCA and
Pontypridd, all won well.
Pontypridd beat Penrhiwceiber 4-0 with much-travelled Chris Summers
getting another hat-trick, while ex-Swan Jonathan Keaveny was also
once more on target.
That allowed Pontypridd to cling on to second place, with the side
below them, Bryntirion Athletic, beating Merthyr Saints 5-1 at Pant.
Goals from Ian Gearie, Jonny Fulton and substitute Brian Burke along
with penalties from Richard Jago and Brandon Walters did the trick
ahead of tomorrow's vital confrontation with Pontypridd at Bryntirion
Park (6pm).
However, fourth-placed Newport YMCA hammered Gwent rivals Tillery 9-0
at Mendalgief Road.
Garden Village remain on the fringes of the promotion issue despite
being held to a 2-2 draw by Morriston at the Dingle.
Dean Beniamous sparked a late rush of goals with a 70th-minute strike,
only for Dave Rimmer to equalise.
Dean Rosselli then looked to have secured the Dingle men all three
points, but substitute Michael Neale hit the target from 30 minutes
during injury time.
Ammanford continued to climb away from the relegation zone with a
third goalless draw on the trot, this latest one at Pontyclun, while
Porthcawl were undone by two late goals in a 2-1 setback at Caldicot.
Though leading for most of the game after an early Thomas Marlow goal,
the Seasiders leaked late goals to Wayne Morley (penalty) and David
Lloyd.
In the third division derby at Ynyscedwyn Road, victory went to
Ystradgynlais 2-1 over Cwmaman.
Cwmaman's Steven Williams had an early goal ruled out, and Ystrad went
clear before half-time via goals from Liam Soroka and Carl Evans.
Gary Davies pulled a goal back midway through the second half, but
Ystrad went on to overturn a 2-0 defeat at Grenig Park back in the
autumn.

WISEMAN HEADS BACK TO
GOYTRE |
01 April 2005 |
| Goytre
United have re-signed striker Paul Wiseman ahead of tomorrow's
Motaquote Insurance Welsh League clash with relegation- haunted Garw
at Blandy. Wiseman switched to Llandarcy Park during the autumn but,
in the light of the impending merger with Skewen, he now feels his
future is at Glenhafod Park.
While Wiseman is drafted
into the squad, one player who will miss the trip to Pontycymer will
be defender Paul Lenihan.
Goytre will be in action at home against Briton Ferry on Tuesday in a
rearranged league fixture (7.15pm).
Skewen Athletic take on Taffs Well at Rhiw Ddar and will be minus the
services of both top scorer Andy Hill and Carl Mainwaring.
It is likely that Craig Maloney will return to the side, with Simon
Dyer taking up bench duties.
The Tennant Park club will be looking to end an annoying draw habit.
Their last three matches - and five out of the last six - have ended
in stalemates
Neath, bidding to avoid the three relegation positions, travel to
Dinas Powys and the division's form side, Maesteg Park, meet Barry
Town at the White Tips ground in Treforest.
The Old Parish side, who gained a stunning 3-1 win at leaders Ton
Pentre last week to extend an unbeaten sequence to nine matches, will
be without ex-Garw star Dean Vokes, but Lee Michael is scheduled to
return from a knee strain.
Briton Ferry have declared a fit squad ahead of their home encounter
with table-topping Ton Pentre, and at Goytre United on Tuesday.
Pontardawe Town have seen their lead at the top of the second division
drastically cut over the last fortnight, and they will take nothing
for granted at Seven Sisters.
Ponty will be without Rob Folland and have fitness doubts concerning
Simon Davies and Jamie Rickard, but Paul Davey has completed a ban.
Seven, buoyed by last Sunday's 2-0 home win over Caldicot, add James
Griffiths to their squad, but experienced front man Nigel Westall is
still suspended.
Garden Village have been coming to terms with the 7-1 mauling they
received at the hands of Pontypridd last Sunday.
They will be looking to steady their rocking boat at the Dingle
against a Morriston side attempting to stave off relegation.
The Village people will once more be without Mark Lloyd and Chris
Thomas, but they have three other absentees - top-scorer Ben Brown,
Craig Blake and Jamie Evans.
However, during the closing weeks of the season, the Gorseinon-based
side will be able to call on former Swansea City player Andrew
Mumford, on dual registration from Aberystwyth Town.
Morriston have signed former Liverpool triallist goalkeeper Andrew
Marsh, along with former Skewen and Llanelli centre-back Richard
Jenkins, but they will be without both Julian Parry and Mark Baker.
Ammanford are bracing themselves for another tough encounter when they
throw down the gauntlet to Pontyclun at Ivor Park.
The Rice Roaders did well to pick up a point last Sunday against
Merthyr Saints, considering they had Steven Francis sent off in the
40th minute.
John Garland picked up a leg injury against the Saints and is ruled
out, but striker Nathan Jones is set to return.
The third division throws up a derby clash with Ystradgynlais looking
to reverse an early-season 2-0 defeat at Cwmaman.
Dave Miller, Chris Courtney and Daniel Jenkins all return for Ystrad.
